I took the ski lift to the top of the slopes to get a view of the panorama of fall colors. Michigan is beautiful! I think we all need a reminder now and again to look around and take in all the goodness God provides. While I am up here, please be assured of my prayers for all of you. And please don’t break anything while I am away! Thank You Last Wednesday our family of parishes celebrated the commissioning Mass which included the installment of the four pastors for our family. Fr. John Esper, Fr. Rob- ert Williams, Fr. Paul Snyder and myself will do our best to serve the needs of our parishes with Fr. Paul serving as moderator with duties and responsibilities to lead us. Also, our parochial vicars were acknowledged as integral leaders within the family and our deacons as servant leaders. I thank everyone who came to the Mass in support of our family. Soon Fr. Paul will be up- dating us on the progress of building the team that will help coordinate the work ahead of us. Please continue to pray for the success of family of parishes. Generosity Two weekends ago I preached at all the Masses and talked to you about the progress of Raise the Roof, our CSA goal and how the two are tied together. I mentioned that the Archdiocese of Detroit has two sources of income that is provided by parishes. The first is a 7% assessment on offertory income which funds the operations of the AOD. The second source of income is the Catholic Services Appeal (CSA) which funds all the necessary ministries of the AOD including training of seminarians for priesthood. The CSA is set at 15.5% of our offertory income. Any monies contributed to the CSA are not assessed. Our CSA goal this year was $262,912. We fell short of that goal by $153,211. Many don’t realize that if we do not make our goal we are invoiced for the deficit and have to pay it out of our operating budget. Remember those monies are assessed both 7% and 15% = 22%. So a few weeks ago I encouraged you to make your contribution worth 22% more by giving to the CSA. Since then you have decreased our CSA shortfall by just under $20,000! So our shortfall is now $137,000. Also your contributions to Raise the Roof increased by $25,000 totaling $840,000. We have also heard from individuals who, after hearing we need hands and feet on the job, wish to volunteer for parish ministries. This has been a very good week for the parish. Thank you for your generous response!

“Heaven for me is hidden in a little Host Where Jesus, my Spouse, is veiled for love. I go to that Divine Furnace to draw out life, and there my Sweet Saviour listens to me night and day.” St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Scheduled Adorers and Substitutes are urgently needed to cover 30 open Holy Hours on the weekly schedule. This requires a regular one-hour commitment each week, or for substitutes, to be on a contact list to help cover, on an as-needed basis, Holy Hours at times for which you are generally available. Early morning and Saturday hours are especially challenging to fill.

OPEN HOLY HOURS:Sunday 2 AM, 3 AM, 12 PM, 4 PMMonday 2 AM, 3 AM, 3 PM, 11 PM, Tuesday 12 AM, 1 AM, Wednesday 1 AM, 3 AM, 4 AM, 8 AM, 6 PMThursday 1 AM, 3 AM Friday 4 AM, 11 AM, 2 PM Saturday 2 AM, 3 AM, 4 AM, 12 PM, 1 PM, 3 PM, 5 PM, 8 PM, 10 PM, 11 PM

This list includes the Holy Hours for which NO ONE is currently scheduled to attend regularly and thus are NECESSARY to fill in order to have someone ALWAYS present with the Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament exposed in the monstrance. This is a requirement in order to continue Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration. Ideally, there should be TWO people scheduled for each hour, and there are MANY hours with only ONE person scheduled. If you cannot commit to an hour on the list above, there are other Holy Hours for which a second person is needed. Please contact us at [email protected].

“The month of October brings with it our annual observance of Respect Life Month. As part of the Year of St. Joseph declared by Pope Francis, this year’s celebration highlights the example of that great saint…

Like St. Joseph, we are also called to care for those God has entrust-ed to us–especially vulnerable mothers and children. We can follow in the footsteps of St. Joseph as protector by advocating against taxpay-er-funded abortion, which targets the lives of millions of poor children and their mothers here in the United States. We can imitate his care and provision by helping to start Walking with Moms in Need at our parish-es, "walking in the shoes" of mothers experiencing a difficult pregnancy, especially low-income mothers in our communities. At times, we may feel uncertain of our ability to answer the Lord’s call. But He invites us to faithfully respond, despite our own fears or weak-nesses: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Cor 12:9) “ (Excerpt from Respect Life Month Statement, Oct. 2021 by Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann, Chairman, U.S. Conference of Cath-olic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities)

November 7 -13, 2021Let the Children come to me

Mt. 19:14Have you ever told your daughter that you would be proud of her if she became a Sister? Have you ever told your son that you would be proud of him if he became a Priest? Your support and encouragement are vital for the future of the Church.

Mercy in Action Day 2021 was a wonderful experience of prayer and service. Armada Blanca (pictured above) provided music between decades of the Rosary. The children prayed in English and Spanish and brought joy to all who came.

All slots were filled by volunteers from Shrine and St. Mary to package food at Forgotten Harvest. Volun-teers made rosaries and cards for veterans, incarcerat-ed and the sick. A group of volunteers went to Sanc-tum House, Mary’s Children Family Center and St. Mary Cemetery to provide outdoor clean-up. Thank You to all of our Volunteers!

Draw Near to Saint Thérèse

Years ago I had a friend who’s car broke down. She walked miles and miles just to get to Mass everyday. Getting to her cleaning and dog-walking gigs was even harder. She was out of breath, frustrated, and unable to afford a new car. At the same time, another friend was looking to sell his car because it needed a simple repair. I mentioned it to my husband who can repair cars, and he was sure he could do the job. All it would need is some new tires! It became a fun, secret project, and cost us nearly nothing. I still remember the day the car was ready. The day we gave her the keys she was SO surprised, and so touched! In the end, we had had to do so little that I shared with her the marvel of how the project had come together almost entirely through the grace of God. There is so much joy in giving! In fact, the Second Vatican Council declared that “Man… cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself” (Gaudium et Spes, 24). This October we’re celebrating St. Thérèse, our parish patroness. St. Thérèse gave everything to Jesus! She said, “my little way is the way of spiritual childhood, the way of trust and absolute self-surrender.” Have you discovered the joy of giving yourself to Jesus? This absolute self-surrender brings so much joy! Jesus Himself taught us about this joy, saying, “the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field” (Matthew 13:44). We can surrender ourselves to God out of joy because we know only His infinite love can satisfy our infinite longings. We can surrender ourselves to God out of joy because we know His plan for us is better than anything

Evangelization & Faith Formation

Send me (Beth Spizarny) an email ([email protected]) or give me a ring (248-556-9898) and let me know your thoughts. As Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation, I am responsible for overseeing the formation of children, youth, and adults, as well as implementing Unleash the Gospel with parishioners, and reaching out to inactive Catholics, and the unchurched.

we could imagine. We can surrender ourselves to God out of joy because we know even in sorrows He is offering us incredible graces. As St. Thérèse said, “Life passes. Eternity comes to meet us with great strides. Soon we shall be living with the very life of Jesus. Having drunk deep at the source of all bitterness, we shall be deified in the very source of all joys, of all delights.”You and I are challenged here and now to follow Thérèse’s example by giving all that we have, our very selves to God! This work is not only for the saints, it is for every one of us. Pope Francis said, “Do not be afraid of holiness. It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy. On the contrary, you will become what the Father had in mind when he created you” (Gaudete et Exsultate, 32). Surrendering my life to Jesus was the best decision I’ve ever made.Be a missionary of joy! We’re going to visit parishioners we haven’t seen in awhile through Operation Olive Branch on Saturday, October 30. Email [email protected] to join the team! Training is provided.

Mass, Training, Prayer & Home VisitsLife is messy. Sometimes people slowly drift away from Church, and other times something happens which makes it hard for people to return. You can make a difference! Join Operation Olive Branch for a morning of home visits. Through Operation Olive Branch, we go out in pairs to visit people in their homes to listen, pray, and invite people to return to Church. We always send a postcard in the mail ahead of time so our parishioners know we’re planning on stopping by.In fact, we’ve visited the homes of 272 parish families through Operation Olive Branch in just the past couple of months. Of course some are not home when we stop by, but we have had 90 fruitful conversations in which we have been able to listen with people, pray with them, and invite them to come back to Church. Join us Saturday 10/30 for morning Mass, breakfast, training, home visits, and Adoration in the Basilica. Volunteers will visit families, or intercede for the outreach in the Basilica.Join the team by emailing [email protected] or visit https://bit.ly/3FFMn21 to join online.

Question: How did St. Thérèse live her “Little Way?”Answer: St. Thérèse did little things with great love. Her autobiography, Story of a Soul, demonstrates her humility in everything she did. She told her Mother Superior, “you see that I am a very little soul, who can only offer very little things to Our Lord” (SS, page 143). These offerings of her little sacrifices led her to comment, “I will seek out a means of getting to Heaven by a little way—very short and very straight, a little way that is wholly new. We live in an age of inventions; nowadays the rich need not trouble to climb the stairs, they have lifts instead. Well, I mean to try and find a lift by which I may be raised unto God, for I am too tiny to climb the steep stairway of perfection” (Story of a Soul, page 113). St. Thérèse has given us a roadmap for attaining heaven.

Mass for CommercePlease join His Excellency Bishop Arturo Cepeda and the Catholic business and professional community for a morning of inspiration at the 28th Annual Mass for Commerce on Wednesday, October 27, at 8 a.m. in the Chapel of Sacred Heart Major Seminary, 2701 W. Chicago Blvd., Detroit 48206. This celebration of the Eucharist reminds Catholic men and women that they are not merely business and professional people who happen to be Catholic, but people who recognize they are stewards of God’s gifts and their need for the Holy Spirit to be with them, guiding them every day.A breakfast for fellowship and conversation will follow Mass. Archdiocesan protocols for indoor gatherings will be followed. For more information, call 313-596-7430 or visit website www.massforcommerce.org

This weekend after all the Masses, we’re sharing Jose Barrientos’ Story of Hope. Here is a summary!

——————————————————

Jose’s life was all about drugs and alcohol. He used the money he made at his job to pay for his addictions. His life was a mess. One day, due to his bingeing, he became lost and was gone for three days. This was a very frightening experience, so traumatizing that on Sunday he decided to go to church with his wife and children. At the end of Mass there was an announcement about a Men’s Conference and his wife bought him a ticket.Because she needed the car, his wife drove him to and dropped him off at the conference. As the conference began, he was miserable, he thought the whole thing was irrelevant. He sat in the back of the church but couldn’t leave because he had no car. When the second speaker came on, it was like he was speaking directly to Jose. He became very scared and started shaking. At the end of the talk, an announcement was made that there were 12 priests available for confession. Jose ran to be the first in line and made his confession to Msgr. William Easton. Msgr. Easton recognized God’s gifts in him. He became Jose’s friend and spiritual director.Jose’s life turned around. God had done so much in his life. What could he do in return? He became active in parish life, his family also became more involved, he had a new closeness with his wife and children, he began helping others to overcome challenges and seek Christ. He asks God to give him the strength to continue serving.Jose wants the world to know about the amazing, wonderful life that is available to those who follow Christ!

Baptism for Older ChildrenWe are blessed and humbled to be working with a handful of older children who are not baptized yet along with their families. If someone has reached the age of reason, typically 7 years old, and is not baptized, they are usually no longer a candidate for an infant baptism that many of us are familiar with. These older children are part of our RCIA adapted for children group. RCIA is the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults where they are prepared for all three sacraments of initiation – baptism, confirmation, and Eucharist which are usually received at an Easter Vigil. These children are adults in the sense that they will receive their sacraments just as non-baptized adults would, not as an infant would, but the preparation is tailored for their younger ages. If your child at least 7 and not baptized, please contact Janie Lynch at [email protected] or 248.541.5133 to find out more about RCIA!

"The Militia Immaculata Prayer Village at Shrine has resumed in-person meetings. Please join us on Wednesday evenings at 8:00 PM in the Martin Room of the St. Thérèse Chapel. Together we pray the rosary, reflect on a reading from St. Maximilian Kolbe's writings, and say intercessory prayers for our intentions. We also evangelize by spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus through consecration to the Immaculata and distribute miraculous medals.

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR A DEEPER RELATIONSHIP WITH THE LORD? Come join the Love of God Charismatic Prayer Community here at Shrine Basilica. We meet every Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. in the St. Therese Chapel. Come join us for one hour of praise, teaching, and healing prayer. See what the Lord has planned for you. Questions – call Mary Ellen Buchanan at 586-770-2214.

SAINT in Focus

St John Paul II, October 22 1920-2005

Born in Poland as Karol Wojtyla, he studied drama in college but was interrupted by World War II. He worked in a quarry splitting stone while joining an “underground” seminary. Like St. Therese, he was known as a loving and down-to-earth individual, helping people persecuted first under the Nazis, then the Soviets.

Describing himself as a “witness to hope” at the United Nations General Assembly, relations with Orthodox churches, Muslims, Judaism and many nations improved during his papacy. He championed the Divine Mercy Movement and was beloved around the world. Pope St. John Paul II is patron saint of Poland and World Youth Day.

WHAT IS SOULCORE? SOULCORE is a movement that combines core strengthening, stretching and functional exercises with the prayers of the rosary; a sensory experience combining candlelight, music, scripture, reflections and movement to nourish body, mind and soul and encourage deeper meditation on the mysteries and virtues of the rosary. If you don’t know the rosary, SoulCore is a wonderful way to learn it. Each mystery is announced aloud. The first part of every prayer is said aloud, so you are guided through. For the second half of each prayer, until you know them by heart, you can reflect on the mystery. SoulCore is not yoga, nor are yoga poses or Sanskrit referenced at any time. SoulCore is an invitation to integrate body and soul in prayer, fully orienting the heart and mind toward Christ, while discovering the beauty of the rosary: A gentle, healing path to grow in virtue, interior peace and strength. SoulCore is easily adaptable to all fitness levels. We suggest and encourage modifications in all classes. It is suitable for teens and up. Visit www.soulcore.com for more information or contact us at [email protected]. Please note: We strongly recommend that you consult with your physician before beginning any exercise program. By participating in the SoulCore experience you agree to do so at your own risk and assume all risk of injury to yourself. There are no fees for class. Donations go toward Shrine STEP BY STEP RUN
