BROAD HAVEN GUIDES : SUMMER 2013 Another successful term in the Broad Haven Guide Unit……BHFJane Lewis from the British Heart Foundation gave an informative talk to the Guides in early June, explaining (and demonstrating) the need for defibulators in rural communities. BHF currently have a campaign to encourage youth groups to raise funds for this worthy cause whilst playing Dodge Ball. In the autumn term the girls will be organising and holding their own ‘Dodge Ball’ sponsored event raise money.New Guiding Branding Girlguiding has recently launched a new logo that all involved in the organisation will now be using Broad Haven Guides currently need a Guide Leader so if interested come and find out more. We will be having a ‘stand’ in the carnival to promote Guiding so please come and see us.Bluebell Wood We walked through Bluebell Wood on one very sunny evening in early June –‘tracking’ and collecting unusual items as we walked, interestingly none of the girls had been in Bluebell Wood before but all thoroughly enjoyed it! Ready Steady Cook Medph organised a Ready steady cook competition as part of the BP Award, lots of Healthy ingredients and a really fun evening, well done!Snow Ball The Unit wishes to thank the Mrs Charlie Alexander and the other organisers of the annual Snow Ball for their generous donation of £100 to the Guide Unit. Tesco Vouchers Using the Tesco vouchers that the

Guides collected this year we were able to order a parachute plus several smaller items, all have already been put to good use! A big thank you to all you sent in their vouchers and especially to Mr Keith Gardham for allowing us to put a collection box in the St Brides Inn in Little Haven. Summer BBQThe senior Guides (Ashley, Jemima and Amy) cooked and served burgers for the younger Guides, Enrolments Mollie was enrolled recently. Rosie and Jessica have chosen to be enrolled on Carnival Day. Welcome to you all.Carnival Day We hope to see as many Guides as possible at the Carnival. And finally …A personal Thank YouAfter almost 18 years of being involved (as an adult) with Broad Haven Guides I have decided, for many different reasons, to step down from a weekly involvement with the Guide Unit. I have truly enjoyed every moment with the girls and have many, many special memories to treasure, from taking girls to Switzerland to ‘Our Chalet’ and to London to ‘Baden Powell House’ (two out of the four Guiding World Centres), camping in different locations, trips to the Big Gig, Celebrating Thinking Day and dressing up with the girls on Carnival Day. I have even performed on the stage at the Torch Theatre with other Pembrokeshire Guiders!I will continue to help once a month initially until another Guider / helper is found, and then whenever I am needed. I have been involved at County Level as the ‘B.P coordinator and will continue to do this so will still see the girls as they progress through this award.


Greenacres is a small, non profit, animal rescue centre in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside. We were founded in June 2008, when the need for our effort was recognised. Run with the dedicated support of a small band of

volunteers, we try our very best to help any animal in need...and we operate a no-kill policy .

We believe that every animal deserves a second chance , and we are asking you to help us to give them that.

Although we work mainly with dogs and cats, and have helped a host of other animals along the way, our first priority is always to save any animal who is at risk

or in danger of being put to sleep, but we will try and help ANY animal in need. We also support and educate to try and promote responsible pet ownership.

We receive absolutely no public funding, so we rely entirely on supporter fundraising & public donations to keep us going

MUGA Broad Haven School Correspondence has been received from Mark Laundy regarding the plans for Broad Haven School. Cllr Peter Morgan has advised him that the plans are available to be viewed.Church Yards The Committee confirmed that the Community Council gives the Church Yards a grant of £180 each per year to cover grass cutting.The Point, Little Haven Matt Thompson of the National Trust visited Little Haven on Tuesday, 2 July 2013 to discuss The Point. The problems regarding maintenance were outlined to him and although he was very helpful he was limited in what he could do because his work plan for July and August is full. He will, however, try to get some manpower to do some work on the steps and surrounding area immediately and find some volunteers for some of the additional work.. There is a number of areas requiring attention and unfortunately there are two authorities to liaise with beside the National Trust, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks and Pembrokeshire County Council. At present the maintenance work tends to get done just for the Regatta but the area attracts tourists throughout the year and, therefore, does need regular attention. Cllr Peter Morgan agreed to discuss the matter with Pembrokeshire County Council to see what could be done.PLANNING NP/12/0614 - the conversion of the former West Wales Diving Centre Pool Building to a shellfish holding tank and enterprise residential caravan for a three year period was granted. NP/13/0182 – the proposed development dwelling on land adjacent to Alberts Cottage, Wesley

Road, NP/12/0477, NP/12/0478, NP/12/0480 – the development for Blockett Lane were all refused.NON AGENDA ITEMJapanese Knotweed Cllr Ian Whitby reported a large amount of knotweed in the hedges around Broadway and requested that Pembrokeshire County Council be informed in order that it is included in the spraying period during September.Play Park Inspections The Play Parks insurance company require the play park inspections to be carried out on a more regular basis. The clerk will get a group of councillors and other volunteers trained in order to put together an inspection rota for weekly inspections.

ITEMS DISCUSSED AT THE COUNCIL’S JULY MEETING

AGENDA ITEMSDog Signs for Broad Haven Beach Cllr Kevyn Sturman checked the dog signs for Broad Haven Beach and found the sign by the slip road was not sufficiently informative for visitors to the area and there were no signs at all at some entries to the beach. He also expressed concern that during low tide people could walk from Little Haven to Broad Haven and be completely unaware that there were dog restrictions on Broad Haven Beach. There has been a continual stream of complaints regarding dogs in the restricted area plus dog fouling on the beach and walkways from both residents and visitors to the area. After discussions the committee decided on following actions• Additional signage to cover all entrances to the beach and villages.• Improved sign wording and size.• Request for additional visits from Dog Wardens.• Discussion with lifeguards regarding restricted area.Pembrokeshire County Council Environmental Department have advised there is no budget for additional signage at present but will make signs at cost price in their workshop should the community budget be able to cover the cost.The Clerk will put together some mock up signs for consideration and quotes.Bin Capacity in Broad Haven Cllr Kevyn Sturman expressed concern that .

the bins on the Broad Haven Slipway were always full. Cllr Peter Morgan advised the meeting that the bins were emptied four times a day and the times had to coincide with the opening and closing of the council municipal rubbish tip. He also pointed out that the rubbish bins were always full, whilst the recycling bins were often empty. For this reason Pembrokeshire County Council have Increased the number of bins on the slipway and improved the instructions on their use.The committee decided that discussions should be held with both the local supermarket and fish and chip shops with a view to increasing the number of bins outside these premises.Sports Council Meeting Feedback Cllrs Dai Faulkner and Brendan Slater attended a meeting with the Sports Council regarding the possibility of a grant for the football club. The Sports Council representative suggested that the Community Council have a specialist survey done on the pitch to give an idea whether it would be possible to have a grant to help pay for any recommended works. It was agreed that the requested documentation should be received by the Council before any funds were made available for a survey. This included the terms and conditions required by Pembrokeshire Council for an increased length of lease and a business plan from the Football Club clearly outlining their future plans.The clerk agreed to chase up Helen Leighfield at Pembrokeshire Council and Cllrs Kevyn Sturman and Dai Faulkner agreed to chase up Ian Jones, the Football Club Secretary

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY GARDENS AND ALLOTMENTSWhat Should Happen in August (according to the All Knowing Alan Titchmarsh)• Harvest French and runner beans, lettuce, beetroot, turnips, courgettes, onions, pencil leeks, marrows, calabrese, summer squash, second early potatoes, first tomatoes, and globe artichokes.• With the present dry spell keep vegetables well watered. • Sow spring vegetables for next year.• “Stop” outdoor tomatoes, cut and dry herbs as well as taking cuttings from them.• Tip of the month: Stake brassica plants to prevent them from being flattened by strong winds later in the season. Our allotments have the best sea view in the world, and some of the strongest winds to go with them. Fruit in July• Prune gooseberries, red currant bushes and summer fruiting raspberry canes. By now all fruit should have been picked.• Harvest blackberries, loganberries and early varieties of old eating apples. • Cut strawberry runners from the parent plants.Watch out for• Symptoms of drought• Powdery mildew, particularly on roses and honeysuckle• Caterpillars on cabbages and other brassicas• Blight on potatoes and tomatoes• Slugs and snails.

What happened on my plot in JulyLast year there was no reason to worry about watering but this year I have been watering every day, especially the smaller plants, in spite of asking Derek the BBC weatherman for rain in the early hours of the mornings. The plants are still playing “catch up” due to the cold start to the growing season, however they should have made this up by the end of the month.I have been harvesting potatoes and strawberries, or should I say sharing the harvest with the local wildlife. There are a couple of pheasants that have been helping themselves to the leaves of the young beetroot - I wonder what pheasant tastes like stuffed with beetroot leaves. If I catch one I’ll let you know!Some of the other plots are producing some lovely sprouts, cabbages and various brassicas, mine just didn’t appear (I’m not jealous). On one plot the cabbage plants are protected by a tunnel cover, unfortunately the ends were left open and the cabbage white butterflies were queuing up to use it like a fast track highway to lay their eggs on the plants. “Round the Table”Eva’s Cafe and Bistro in Anchor House

BROAD HAVEN PUPILS TOP THE BILL AT TORCH THEATREEighty-eight enthusiastic young people from across Pembrokeshire performed in Amethyst Dance production TEN at the Torch Theatre on the 5th and 6th July. The dance spectacular was a showcase of Amethyst Dance’s favourite numbers in celebration of their 10th Anniversary. 10 pupils from Broad Haven School and a pupil from Ysgol Glan Cleddau, performed in the show and entertained the audience with a range of Ballet, Tap, Jazz and Street Dance routines. Three of Broad Havens’ pupils showed off their skill and footwork in the opening number to ‘Kool and the Gang “Celebration’, which was a very cleverly choreographed routine that spelled out CELEBRATE TEN YEARS at the end of the routine. The audience melted at the routine ‘Suzy Snowflake’ in which one of the youngest dancers from reception class performed. It certainly received a lot of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’. The atmosphere was upbeat and jovial throughout whilst the pupils kept the audience entertained with popular and well known numbers including ‘Singing in the Rain’, ‘42nd Street’, ‘English Country Garden’, ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’, ‘Zip a Dee Doo Dah’, and ‘I Just Cant Wait to be King’. Andrew Williams the Head Teacher from Broad Haven School was one amongst the audience, “it was a fantastic and entertaining evening that highlighted the great deal of talent that we have in Pembrokeshire. All the children should feel extremely proud of the dedication that they have demonstrated in what was a wonderful night’s entertainment.” By the end of the evening the audience were certainly in full swing and joined in the finale with a bit of hand clapping, arm rolling, hip wiggling, shoulder shrugging and arm waving. The tea hostesses were Pat Thornton and Greta Parton-Hindley. The raffle was won by Judith Thomas. On 3rd August the W I will be serving

refreshments at Broad Haven Carnival. Cakes and assistance on the day will

BIRD WATCH - AUGUST Species of the Month: Domestic Cat When I mention cats to people I’m often met with one of two opposing views – that of a treasured pet or that of a wildlife killer. Many people want to encourage birds into their garden but because of their own cat, or that of a neighbour, they are afraid to do so. There are, however, a number of steps that can be taken to help protect the birds in your garden from cat predation.Cats rely on cover to approach prey and to launch surprise attacks; by positioning feeders in the open away from trees/bushes, birds are given the space they need to spot a rushing predator. Attracting groups of birds to your garden can actually increase their chances of spotting danger; the more eyes and voices there are the better to warn others of any risk. It is helpful if you can spread your feeders around, thus increasing the number of look-out posts; it also reduces overcrowding in a small space where social distraction could leave birds vulnerable to attack. A sonic device delivers an unpleasant sound when a cat crosses in front of it and can work as an effective deterrent; move it around periodically to ensure the cat doesn’t learn to just avoid a particular route. Think also about the positioning of any nest boxes; are they within easy reach of cats? The open nests of birds such as Blackbird can be protected by chicken wire of a suitable gauge and also think about planting thorny vegetation as this will provide good nesting cover when it matures.Cat owners can also take steps to reduce the hunting impact of their pets, which in turn helps to reduce flea and worm infestations. Bells fitted to collars have been shown to reduce a cat’s success at catching prey; however, bells should be replaced regularly as they lose their sound clarity over time due to the constant friction of use. There are lots of inexperienced fledglings around during the spring and early summer so limiting the time a cat spends outdoors could help their chances of survival and reduce nest raiding. Dawn and dusk are important feeding times for birds, particularly in the winter, so, again, try to keep cats indoors during these times. Did you know?

It has been estimated that cats kill 55 million birds in Britain every year and that such predation could contribute to long-term de-clines of familiar garden birds such as House Sparrows.Cats are well-known for keeping themselves clean; their saliva acts as a deodorant allowing them to hunt up or down-wind of their prey.The Welsh name is cath.

HAROLDSTON WOODS WALK, BROAD HAVENA lovely change from the beach or village, without having to go too far! Start at the Millmoor Way Car Park (by the Youth Hostel, see map below).You will see a small shed (picture below) to the left of the Youth Hostel.Walk in the direction of the arrow shown below, you will walk past the shed. Take the left hand path and follow it. You will reach a gate, go through and walk straight on towards the gate on the opposite side of the path. Follow the wooded path alongside the stream, crossing over the stream by the bridge. Keep an eye out for the tyre swing on your left! You can follow the path and the first left hand pathway (signposted) will take you across the road to join onto the coastal path. If you turn left, you can walk down to Broad Haven. However, if you turn right you can walk along the coast to the

Druidston Hotel which serves drinks and food. You can walk or catch the Puffin Shuttle back. If you walk straight on, past Timber Hill chalets you reach Haroldston church. Here you can double back on yourself and walk down the road back into Broad Haven.
