At the May meeting members enjoyed an informative talk by Elaine Scale and David Braithwaite on resuscitation and cardiac/stroke rehabilitation.

Elaine is the "referral coordinator" and David the "exercise referral instructor" based at the Leisure Centre in Haverfordwest.

Next month on June 9th the annual outing will take place. This year it is a trip on the "Gwili Railway" followed by a visit to "Aberglasny Gardens". There are approximately 9 seats available on the coach. If you are interested please contact

On Saturday 17th May some more work took place at The Slashpond picnic area Meadow in preparation for the Wild Week day. Gordon Smith Landscaping very kindly agreed to donate his mini digger for the day so we could remove 10x10m sq of turf,

so that the soil is revealed ready for the pollinating flowers to be planted.

On Thursday May 28th our outdoor event - Buzz Zone Wild Week Day was held as part of the Havens festival half term events. We encouraged locals, visitors , children , families etc, to:

Build a Bug Castle , Build Bird & Bat Boxes , Plant the Pollinating Flower plugs , Learn about Tree Pruning [ Led by Hayley of Pembrokshire Coast National Parks ] and Discover Birds of the Boardwalk [Led by David Meanwell ]

As the chosen local partners for Sat. June 20ths Triathlon Our supporters have been asked to Marshall the event route, Manage the Car park and we are selling our raffle tickets on the day to raise funds for Support the Boardwalk.

We have had great support so far from Volunteer helpers - but if you have a few hours to spare , please contact Kate on 781412 for more details and to sign up !

Rogation Service helps Christian Aid.

On Sunday, 10th May a Rogation Service was held at Redlands Farm. The damp cold weather on the day did not interfere as indoor facilities were provided and an enjoyable, well attended service was led by Rev. Michael Ryall.Half of the collection, 75.00, will be forwarded to Christian Aid as a contribution from the parishes of Haroldston, Talbenny and Walton West.

Thank you to everyone who attended and to those who helped facilitate this service.

BIRD WATCH Welcome to this months Bird Watch. Im one of two Ambassadors for the British Trust for Ornithologys (BTO) Garden BirdWatch Scheme in South Wales. Each month I introduce you to a bird or other animal that you might see in your garden.

Bird of the Month: BlackbirdTraditionally a woodland bird, the Blackbird is now a familiar sight in our gardens. The male is jet-black with a yellow-orange bill and yellow circles around the eyes. The dark brown female has a dull-yellow bill, and a slightly paler chest (with dark brown streaks) and throat. Juveniles (mid-spring to early autumn) may be mistaken for females as they too are brown, although a warmer hue, with a speckled appearance and dark bill. Blackbirds are often seen running across the lawn before stopping to look and listen for invertebrates in the soil. Ground feeding is difficult but it is even harder if there is another Blackbird competing for food on the same patch of lawn, especially as feeding rates drop by 60-80%.

Male Blackbirds sing from late-winter to mid-summer. The song is melodic and flutey, and sung from a high perch. Gaps are left between phrases to allow the bird to listen for any other males answering in the vicinity. Most bird species learn their song within their first year, but a Blackbirds song is developed over a number of years and improves with age. By listening carefully it is possible to distinguish individuals; they have a distinctive voice, just like humans. A disturbed Blackbird will fly into cover whilst uttering a loud, cross chink-chink call.

Did you know?The colour of a males bill is a sign of its health the more orange, the healthier he is.Some Blackbirds, particularly older males, may develop some white plumage.Ringing data estimates that, in the winter, migrants from other European countries increase the population by 12%.Their Welsh name is Mwyalchen.

How to attract them to your garden: Dried/live mealworms fed from a bird table are firm favourites with my local birds, as are rolled oats (uncooked) and suet pellets. Although not the most agile of birds, some have learned how to perch on the fat blocks to feed; others jump up from the ground to knock a few crumbs to the ground. Berries and windfall apples provide a winter treat.

Conservation status: Green listed.

BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that Blackbirds visit gardens throughout the year. There is a reduced reporting rate during the autumn corresponding with their annual moult and when birds may leave gardens to take advantage of autumnal fruits elsewhere.

MATTERS ARISINGWelcome new CouncillorsCllr Brian Henderson, (Chair) welcomed Charlotte Alexander and Nia Davies to the Council.AGENDA ITEMSRenewable Energy Richard James PCNPA Planning Officer, Renewable Energy joined the meeting to give us an overview of the PCNPA's approach to Renewable Energy, in particular Wind Turbines. He explained that there were EU targets for Renewable Energy and that Wind Turbines were just one of the technologies being used locally to help meet the targets. He advised that the incentive payments/tariffs had now been reduced significantly and PCNPA expected to see a reduction in applications.Hayley Barratt, PCNPA Hayley gave the Council an account of the work carried out by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Parks Authority with regards to local footpaths, bridal paths and the countryside Hayley advised that there was a Fruit Tree project ongoing at present and asked if the Council wished to put forward an

area within the Havens. The Council recommended that the grassed area on the corner of Millmoor Way and Sandyke Road.Planning Aid Workshop The Clerk gave an account of the Planning Aid Workshop held earlier in the month. Attendees were advised that the Welsh Assembly Government were working towards making Planning a positive activity rather than an obstacle residents had to overcome. Work is in progress to get local Community and Town Councils more involved in the decision making process and the Welsh Assembly are considering introducing Place Plans which would be developed locally similar to the Neighbourhood Plans in England.Review of Standing Orders/Code of Conduct A new guidance on Community Council Code of Conduct was issued by the Ombudsman with a request for councillors to familiarise themselves with. Surgery Date The next Surgery Date is Monday, 1 June, 2015 at 6.30 in Broad Haven Village Hall. Councillors on duty will be Cllrs Joan Phillips and Lawrence Hughes.Boardwalk UpdateWork has begun on cutting back the brambles around the fruit trees and Hayley Barratt, PCNPA, will be giving a hand pruning the trees.



Some of the old decking boards have been used to make bird boxes and the group were delighted to see that one is already occupied. Tidy Towns has issued grant money to purchase wild flower meadow seeds. The meadow area will be marked off and the Clerk will advise Down to Earth Landscaping in order that they do not strim the area.

Annual Return The Annual Return was internally audited this month and a copy of the Accounting Statement issued to all Councillors. A Notice has been displayed on the Council website giving information and dates for the Exercise of Electors Rights.

Extraordinary Meeting by Little Haven & Talbenny Amenities Association

As reported in the last edition of The Havens Diary, an Extraordinary Meeting of the Little Haven & Talbenny Amenities Association was called for Thursday, 14th May. This was as a result of a perceived significant decline in support & commitment from the villages which questioned whether there was indeed a need and appetite for such an organisation in the future.

Residents of the two communities had been circulated a letter that set out the annual activities of the Association and what it had provided recently, and asking them to attend this meeting to discuss whether it should continue or not!

The committee was reassured by the numbers of residents who attended and several younger villagers offered to join the committee to bring new enthusiasm and ideas to future activities. It was therefore agreed, unanimously, that the Association should continue and that it was a fundamental part of both communities life. More input and assistance was offered from those attending and the the committee will appoint a Communications Officer so that residents were kept better informed and involved.

Only 30 yards from the beach we are an ideal stop for a glass of Welsh Ale, wine, tea or coffee.

Our varied menu includes fresh local lobster, crab and fish, steaks, mixed grills and Freds famous Lamb curry and homemade Steak and

Ale Pies.

Support The Boardwalk is the chosen fundraising partner for the 2015 TriExcercise Pembrokeshire Coats Triathlon on Saturday June 20th.

THE HAVENS COMMUNITY ALLOTMENTS AND GARDENSHaving taken a 10 day break from the allotment visiting family and friends we have returned to the inevitable long grass and weeds. The former easily resolved with the mower and strimmer, but the latter poses several vexed questions - When is a weed not a weed?

- When is the best time to get rid of weeds?

At least my wife and I agree on the further question How do you get rid of them?

You pull them out roots and all none of these chemical interventions that seem so much easier yet far more insidious.

Having travelled the countryside we have marvelled at the fields of Rapeseed as they glowed in the May sunshine and have loved to see meadows glinting with yellow Buttercups that is where their poetic side ends because that is exactly what we returned to. Whether their seeds were wind borne or dropped by birds we have spent the past few days on hands and knees pulling up rapeseed and buttercup from the onion and potato beds. Not such a pretty sight now.

So the answer to the first question is, according to the Oxford English Dictionary is

- Wild herb springing where it is not wanted

I would go further and say that it is any plant that is self seeding and is in a place that is unwelcome, on the basis that we have enjoyed some very beautiful weeds that invaded the butternut squash bed last Autumn. Although they are coming to an end now and having transplanted them into a more suitable location we have had the best showing of violas, pansies and lobelia than ever hoped for in a planned flowerbed. Thanks to the birds.

When then is the best time to get rid of weeds? I suppose it depends on the weed and its location and here many people would differ. My problem here lies in a tidy mind. Weeds make the plot untidy and need to be got rid of, which is difficult when they come up alongside newly sown carrots and beetroot and so I have to be patient. Pull them up too soon and take with them half of my seedlings or wait until they and the carrots etc are big enough to tell them apart and rob the seedlings of valuable nutrients. The alternative I suppose is the Biblical parable of leaving them until harvest then sort them out.

The answer, although not foolproof is, where possible is hoe regularly and catch the little imposters before they literally take root; left too long dandelion and thistle will put down roots that readily show that not all weeds are weedy.
