SUMMER TIME AT HAVEN
How did that old song go? “Summertime, and the living is easy” What
universe was that?! I don’t think the summer has been slow and “easy”
since I was a very young child. No school, no real schedule or obliga-
tions except for a few chores so I could earn my allowance to — “Wait a minute!”-
--- get ice cream from the Good Humor man. We played, read and made up adven-
tures until our parents called us in for supper or it got dark.
You might think that summers at Haven are “easy” with many regular programs
taking a break — like coffee fellowship, Sunday School and choirs. You might
think that but.... Here at Haven we are not slowing down but gearing up for minis-
try in our community. When you’re following the lead of the Holy Spirit there’s
always something wondrous going on.
WORSHIP In June, July and August we add a Saturday service to our schedule.
Each Saturday during summer there is a 5 p.m. service in our sanctuary. There is no
music but God’s Word is proclaimed and Holy Communion is shared. It’s a peace-
ful time and a special fellowship is shared by those who attend regularly. Sunday
morning worship changes, too, as it moves out on the lawn at 9:30 am. Both ser-
vices may seem a bit more casual but God is still worshiped and sought and pre-
sent. Keep grounded this summer. Keep weekly worship on your calendar.
BLOCK PARTY You do have Haven’s Block Party on your calendar, right? June
27th, 10 am - 2 pm. We’ve invited our neighbors and their families to come for
some fun. We’ll have a bouncy house, games, hotdogs, kettle corn, cotton candy,
entertainment, and prizes. All hands on deck for this effort to share the free grace of
our Lord.
Have you decided how you will share in this holy adventure Block Party? Help
at one of the games? Greet people as they arrive? Help children complete a craft?
Bake brownies or cupcakes? Help us set up or take down tables and chairs? Lend us
a canopy to shade areas? Have another idea you’d like to bring to the party? Con-
tact Mary Fortson, Marge Cunningham or Pastor now and help our congregation
step out into the community with the love of Christ!
VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) We had almost decided to take a rest and
skip a year of VBS. It’s a lot of work and our attendance was down last year. Yet,
there was something that said, “Well, let’s try another year.” Maybe it was the chil-
dren who kept saying, “See you next year.” Maybe it was the nudge of the Holy
Spirit since VBS is one of Haven’s largest outreach efforts. When the Block Party
idea arose, it became a natural place to invite children and have families sign-up in
advance. What does the Lord have in store?
VBS is July 20-24, 5:43 pm - 8:31 pm. The theme is “Everest: Conquering Chal-
lenges with God’s Mighty Power.” We’ll learn and celebrate how God has the
power to provide, comfort, heal, forgive and love us forever.
In June we’ll post slips with supplies you can donate AND put out envelopes for
camper sponsorships. This year very little money was put in the budget for VBS.
We are more dependent than ever on your generous sponsorships to make VBS
happen. (continue article on p. 2)

In July look for those slips with the food needed for our VBS suppers. It takes a village — Haven’s members
and friends — to offer this high energy, gospel week for our children. Can we count on you?
No, despite the song lyrics, the living is not usually “easy” in the summertime. But here at Haven, summertime
IS meaningful and energetic as we worship together and pool the resources our Lord has given us to do
GOD’S WORK with OUR HANDS.
Come Worship... Volunteer ...Contribute.. Celebrate.. Pray...
Practice grace.. Live gratitude.
Your pastor and partner in ministry,
Linda M. Alessandri

HELPING THE RESIDENTS OF HOLLY PLACE – For the month of June we will be collecting
Latex Gloves, Bandaids, Hand Sanitizer, Hand Soap, Bathroom cleaners, (tub, toilet, sink or floor) any
brands for the residents of Holly Place. There is a container in the narthex for you to place your items.
MICAH’S BACKPACKS —The school year is almost over. This year’s Micah’s backpack program served
14 students and distributed 80 days worth of food for 3,360 meals. What a great job the congregation does in
showing our concern for those students!
The task would be overwhelming if it were not for all the folks who help. There are Sunday School and con-
firmation classes that help pack as well as other volunteers; folks who see that the 14 packs (that are heavy
enough to be considered a workout) get to the school each weekend and those who shop. The congregation
supported Souper Bowl which collected items for the program and also the Yard sale that contributed money
to the program. There are some earthly angels who sometimes make food appear in the kitchen and others
who contribute without being asked.
Thank you to all who live “God’s work, our hands”!! Linda Clark
COUNCIL
BUDGET REQUESTS It’s budget time once again. Asking all Team Chairs and Program Leaders to please develop and submit your
budget request for the year 2016 to the Church Office by July 31, 2015. The budget process is challenging. Re-
ceipt of your request in a timely manner will be greatly appreciated.

SUMMER BIBLE STUDY AFTER WORSHIP-ON-THE-LAWN— Come join a discussion of the Bible
readings we’ll be hearing this summer during worship. Informal but informative. Everyone welcome any Sun-
day you can attend. No Bible background needed, just an interest and openness to God’s Word. We’ll start
around 11 a.m. in the parlor. If there is a coffee fellowship, we’ll meet in the Adult Sunday School classroom.
Let’s gather around God’s Word together.
WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY—Women will meet for the 9th & final session of the "Transforming Life and
Faith" study from "Gather" magazine on Thursday, June 25, starting at 10:00 a.m. in the parlor. This session is
from the May issue of "Gather" and is entitled "The Church: Transforming and Reforming." Copies of the
study are available on the portable message board.
We have gotten a little behind (doing the May study in June) because of some rich and valuable discussion and
sharing we have gotten into during the last couple sessions.
We will take a break during July and August and resume on the 4th Thursday in September with a new study
from "Gather." The group always welcomes new participants to this exciting and thought provoking study and
fellowship.

Washington County Coalition of Lutheran Churches “Called by God to build relationships, share resources, inspire others, and grow spiritually”
Slow Pitch Softball Tournament held on April 26th was attended by close to 75 Lutherans and friends. The
weather although a little windy was ideal for the outing with 4 teams representing 6 congregations
slugged it out for near 5 hours until a winner was declared. Congratulations go out to all the teams, but
in the end, Conococheague Parish defeated Trinity Lutheran in the final game of the day.
ARE YOU READY FOR SOME VOLLEYBALL? That’s right it’s time to plan for the 4th annual volley-
ball tournament hosted by Salem Lutheran Church on the outskirts of beautiful Bakersville. Date has
been set for July 19th beginning at 1PM. A flier has already been sent to all congregations so look for it.
Families are asked to bring covered dish to share, congregations are asked to help with the purchase of
hot dogs, buns and water. Call Mark Smith @ 301-432-6173 or e-mail: [email protected] to make
reservations.
“God’s Work Our Hands”, is approaching in Sept., please contact Pastor Perry with a contact for each con-
gregation.
A drive to “Stock the Pantry” of those attending the Gettysburg Seminary is being explored. They are ask-
ing for help to offset the cost of an education and still feed themselves, remember college? As we get
more information it will be passed along to you.
“Lutherans in the Parade” is on again this year. The float has been reserved and now we need your partici-
pation. Mummers Parade in Hagerstown has never been the same with these folks, whether you walk
the route or ride the float or both, attendees had a great time last year. Signs/banners are encouraged to
identify your church and decorate the float. More information to come.
What are the objectives of the WCCLC; To establish communication between Lutheran congregations in
Washington County. Determine plan, implement and evaluate county wide service, fellowship and edu-
cational events. We need participation of your congregation to help plan activities and share resources.
Hey it’s easier than being on the Council.
You are invited to join us. WCCLC meets the first Monday of each month (Sept-June) at St. Johns Evangelical
Lutheran Church on S. Potomac St. at 7:00 PM. All Lutheran congregations are invited to send a represen-
tative or 2, meet the other congregations and learn how resources and ideas can be shared.

THANK YOU NOTES
To My Haven Lutheran Church Family,
Bill & I would like to thank everyone for your prayers, cards, phone calls, visits, and food during my recupera-
tion from a broken ankle. Until something like this happens you have no idea how much it means to have so
many people who care and we are so very, very grateful. I thank God every day for each one of you and am
glad to be a part of this wonderful church family. Again thank you all so very much!
Love & Blessings, Lynda Byers
Dear Friends of Holly Place,
On behalf of the residents, staff, and the Board of Directors of Senior Living Alternatives, Inc. I would like to
thank you for the $120.00 and all of the paper products and miscellaneous items that you donate to our facility
Holly Place. Sincerely, Melanie J. Davis Executive Director
Dear Haven Lutheran Church,
Thank you for joining the ELCA Malaria Campaign’s observance of World Malaria Day! Your recent gift of
$303.75 to the ELCA Malaria Campaign is helping provide life-Saving malaria interventions in 13 countries in
Africa. Thank you. In Christ’s Service The Rev. Daniel Rift
Dear Haven Church,
We received the $50.00 donation from the Neighbors In Need Fund of Haven Lutheran Church. Thank you
VERY much for this and generous contribution. It was a successful event—our 12th annual collection. The
final tally of the day was 232 bicycles, assorted bike parts and accessories, 13 sewing machines, 17 canes, 27
sets of crutches, and 36 folding walkers. Most of what we collected will ship to partnerships established in
Ghana and Costa Rica. Mobility aids packed in between bikes will make full use of shipping containers, and
ultimately provide means for transportation and self-sufficiency to many individuals. Your gift is appreciated
and will be forwarded to Bikes for the World. Blessings, Cindy
( Notes are sometimes shortened due to space constraints. Copies of notes are posted on the Haven Board.)
