HAVEN MISSION STATEMENT (adopted 2/26/06 by Haven Church)
“To honor God, to reach out with love to our members and the community
and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING & LUNCH
YOU are INVITED to the
2019 Annual Meeting & Luncheon
“Partnering with Christ”
February 24, after worship
We will worship together at 9:30 am on Sunday, February 24th.
Immediately after worship the adults will go to the Gathering
Room to enjoy some appetizers on the tables while we conduct the
meeting portion of the day. The children will go to the parlor for
their own snacks and program. Around 12 noon the children will
come join the adults in the Gathering Room for lunch and some
more fun.
Parish Life will graciously work out the meal details. Look for a
bulletin board in the narthex to see what you can bring to the
feast. Sign-up for the luncheon on the attendance form in the bul-
letin. We want to order enough of the main entrée.
Oh, one more thing — do you have a song, joke, instrumental se-
lection, dance, skit, lip sync parody, acrobatics, magic trick you
could share? WE have a place for YOU in our February 24th festiv-
ities. Contact a Council member or Pastor Alessandri for more in-
formation.

When we first plan or leave on a trip, we may start out to see certain landmarks or
follow a trail of interests. That is not all that will happen. When you agree to travel
away from home and the familiar, you open yourself to different, surprises, challeng-
es and wonder.
I set out to visit the Holy Land, some of the places where the people of the Bible and
Jesus walked and lived. It was going to be a continuing education experience that I
would later share with you in sermons and presentations. I had an itinerary of sites we
would visit. I knew I would be with Rev. Dr. Mark Powell and 34 students, alumni
and friends of Trinity Lutheran Seminary. There would be a bus driver and there
would be a specifically requested guide. My clothing and travel items needed to fit in one suitcase (under 50
lbs.). I would be sharing a room with my sister. Breakfast and supper provided each day. That is what I knew.
The rest was unknown, rich with an excitement and laced with that edgy “well-here-we-go” feeling.
I have only been back in the country for four days. The memories, people and experiences of those fifteen days
I spent in the Holy Land are a bit of a jumble. There is just so much.
Then I will remember our guide saying, “Ya-lah, people” (“Hurry” or “step on it.”) I will remember the morn-
ing my sister and I were able to get into the Church of the Nativity before hours because our hotel was con-
nected to it by a door. I will see the Christmas decorations still up because there are three different observances
(Dec. 25, Jan 6/7 and Jan. 19). I hear the call to worship from mosques. I remember the fresh vegetables, fruits,
olives, hummus and breads. I recall an elderly monk and artist who oversaw the church built over Jacob’s Well
and who had restored mosaics, frescos and icons. I hear the voices of the seminary students singing in the Cru-
sader-built church of St. Anne (Jerusalem) where the song echoes for an amazing number of seconds after the
singing has stopped. I remember hearing part of the liturgy spoken in Arabic in the Lutheran Church of the Re-
deemer (Jerusalem) and the Lord’s Prayer recited in a variety of native languages. I see four members of the
tour bouncing on donkeys after paying Bedouin children $1 to ride down a hill to our bus. I remember the mar-
vel of being places Jesus had been --- Nazareth, Capernaum, Mount of Olives, and Jerusalem. I was startled by
the economic disparity between Israeli and Palestinian communities. I remember how the streets and highways
to the airport were nearly empty the morning we left because it was the Jewish Sabbath.
This journey to the Holy Lands has so many layers and hidden pockets. I will continue to peel, unpack and
give words to them in the days to come. The Spirit and these experiences are not done shaping me. I encoun-
tered different, surprises, challenges and wonder. I return to live into the calling we all share… blessed to be a
blessing. God guide, direct and lead us as our pathways merge again here at this mission outpost of God’s
called Haven Lutheran Church.
Your pastor and partner in ministry,
Linda M Alessandri

Holly Place is a non-profit organization that aims to provide their senior resi-
dents with the best possible care available in a “home-like” setting. During the
month of February we will be collecting Napkins. Collecting these items as well as
contributing our $100 monthly pledge, is what helps keep Holly Place running.

I wonder:
I Wonder if you have any questions you want to know about God and the Bible.
I Wonder if you have any pictures or poems about God you would like to share In the Wonder Corner.
I Wonder if you know that anybody can ask a question in the Wonder Box.
I Wonder what blessings you are pursuing from God.
Soon you will see a box in the Narthex labeled " The Wonder Box" where you can leave your questions and art. We will use them in the Wonder Corner in future editions of The Messen-ger. Thank you, The Wonder Team

THANK YOU NOTES
To Haven Lutheran Church,
Thank you all for the cards of support and prayers for Michael. We truly
appreciate all of the kind words of encouragement during the time after his
surgery. Michael is working hard in cardio rehab, thanks for your encouraging
words, we are so thankful, thanks be to God! Amy and Michael Mason
Dear Friends of Holly Place,
On behalf of the residents, staff, and the Board of Directors of Senior Living Alternatives, Inc., I
would like to thank you! Thank you for allowing us to use your space for our Christmas Party and the
generous $180.00 and miscellaneous supplies donation to Holly Place. It means the world to us. Be-
cause of you, we can continue to serve at risk seniors, and provide them a safe, loving, affordable
place to call home… Sincerely, Melanie Davis—Executive Director
Dear Haven Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your generous gift of $100.00 to Lutheran Disaster Response. As the long green sea-
son of Pentecost brings images of seeds and bread, deep and abiding growth of abundance in Christ,
so your generosity brings deep and abiding hope to communities dealing with a disaster, providing
water, supplies, shelter and support…. With gratefulness, Daniel Rift
Dear Haven Lutheran Church,
Thank you for the Christmas cards and gifts that I received. I am always warmed by the love and
generosity I feel from all of the Haven members. God’s blessing, Mary Grabill (Adm in. Assist.)
Dear Haven Lutheran Church,
Wishing everyone at Haven a wonderful Christmas and a very healthy and happy New Year. We miss
you all. God’s peace, Wayne & Hazel Gaumer
