What are bladder cancer andkidney cancer?

Bladder and kidney cancer are seriousillnesses.

One of the signs of both types of cancer isblood in your pee.

More men than women get bladder andkidney cancer. You can get these cancersat any age but most people are over 50.

You are much more likely to get bladder orkidney cancer if you smoke.

You are also more likely to get bladder orkidney cancer if you:

Are overweight

Have worked with some chemicals

Have other illnesses like kidney failure

Have someone in your family who hashad cancer. This could be a brother,sister or parent.

Look before you flush

If you have bladder or kidney cancer,finding out quickly means it is easier totreat and could save your life.

So make sure you look before you flush tosee if there is any blood in your pee.

How to spot it

Blood in your pee could be a sign ofbladder or kidney cancer.

The blood in your pee might be bright red.It could also be a pink or brown colour.

There could be a lot of blood.Or there could be just a small amountof blood.

You need to see your doctor straightaway if you see any unexpected blood inyour pee.

You also need to see your doctor if:

You have had an infection calledcystitis that is not clearing up or keepscoming back

It hurts to pee

You have a pain in your side below theribs that doesn’t go away

● You are losing weight for no reason.

Why do you need to see yourdoctor?

If you have blood in your pee it is probablynot anything serious, but it is best to get itchecked out.

It could be that you have an infection,which means you need to see your doctor.

If you still have blood in your pee afterseeing your doctor they will want to know.You will need to see them again.

Seeing your doctor early couldsave your life

A few years ago Pat saw blood in his pee.It did not hurt so he was not going to doanything about it.

But he told his wife, who said he shouldsee his doctor straight away.

He was glad he did because they foundout he had kidney cancer.

He had treatment, got better and stillworks part time.

Keeping well

There are things you can do to give youthe best chance of not getting cancer.

Stop smoking

The best thing you can do to keep wellis to stop smoking. It could also helpstop you getting many different typesof cancer.

Look after yourself

Try to stay a healthy weight and keepactive. The more you do, the better.

Try:

swimming

cycling

dancing

walking.

Eat well

It is good to try and have a healthy diet.Try to eat more fruit and veg.

Cut down on drinking
