It's strange to be writing this newsletter article, talking about the upcoming birth of the next Baby Jones,

and knowing (or hoping, I should say) that by the time you are reading this, she will have arrived and will

be, God willing, healthy and strong and making her adjustment to being the little sister of Jack and Irene!

I wanted to share a few bits of information with everyone about the pastoral coverage during my maternity

leave and also how you can keep up with the baby and me if you have a computer with Internet access!

First, just a reminder that I will be taking 8 weeks of maternity leave, beginning either Monday, August 29

or sooner if the baby decides to arrive sooner. I expect my last Sunday in the pulpit to be August 28, and I

will return to preaching on the last Sunday of October, the 30th. Depending on the baby's temperament,

sleeping, and health, you may see me as a participant in worship prior to October 30.

As I mentioned before, the Rev. Bradley Rentzel will be providing pastoral coverage during my leave. He

will preach each Sunday and will make hospital visitations and respond to emergencies. We have decided

that the answering machine at church will still list my cell phone number to call for emergencies; that way,

I will be aware of what is happening, and then will make a call to my father and he will follow up.

During the first four weeks of my leave, Rev. Rentzel will provide pastoral care and officiate the services if

there are any funerals. During the second four weeks, if I am able, I will provide pastoral care and officiate

any funerals.

Before I take the maternity leave time, I will be setting up a section on our church website to post notes

about how the baby and I (and the rest of our family) are doing, and also be able to share pictures there.

Our new website address is www.lischeysucc.org, and if you visit the site, you will see that there are labels

across the top of the page for information about Lischey's. A new label will be added called "Pastor's

Page." I plan to update the page at least once a week, so I hope that you will stop by the website and see

what's new! I will also send some printed photos along with my husband and Jack and Irene since they will

continue to attend worship most Sundays even when I am home.

I pray that the month of September brings you joy and peace as the weather cools a bit and fall begins.

Please remember to keep all of the children of our congregation in your prayers as they acclimate to their

back-to-school routines, and I look forward to seeing everyone when I return from maternity leave!

With Christian love,

Pastor Sarah

Summer is almost over and choir rehearsals are about to begin. There will be some changes of rehearsal times.

The Chime Choir and Sanctuary Choir will meet at their usual time, but the Joyful Singer will meet on the 2nd

and 4th

Sunday during the Sunday School hour from 9;30 A.M. – 10:00 A. M. They will continue to sing for us

during the service of the 4th

Sunday and other special times of the year. So I look forward to maybe seeing

some new faces in the Joyful Singers. It doesn’t require extra time during the week for rehearsal. It is now

incorporated within the Sunday School hour. So bring out the little ones for Sunday School and they can also

be a part of the Joyful Singers.

The rehearsal time for the Praise Choir is still to be determined by their busy schedule.

Please consider becoming involved in our music program. We need singers and ringers!

P.S. - nature report…nothing out of the ordinary to report this month. The chickens are still not laying eggs. I

tell them everyday its time they contribute to their lodging. The deer are coming closer as the summer

continues and they seem to be grouping together again. It’s fun to watch the little ones jumping, and playing!

NEWSLETTER NEWS of the 29 Churches of the York Association

September 2011 York Association website: www.yorkassociationucc.org

Mission Statement

We, the members of the York Association of the United Church of Christ, are called by God and empowered by the Holy Spirit to represent Christ by:

supporting one another in our covenantal relationship; calling clergy and laity to mutual accountability to the faith and order of the church; witnessing together to God‟s redeeming love. (adopted April 28, 1991)

Reflections on General Synod

The theme for General Synod 28 was Imagine What's Possible. That is just what each congregation in the York Association is called to do. The experience of General Synod is energizing. Everywhere you went you were energized with new ideas to bring back to your local church and you were encouraged as a delegate to share what you learned with the churches in your particular Association as well. The workshops were informative, the plenary sessions went smoothly, the keynote speakers were dynamic, the music was inspirational and the worship services were moving and Spirit led. I would gladly come to any church event and share what I learned at General Synod 28. You can reach me at 717-542-8214 or [email protected]. Grace and gratitude, Lee Ann Strine - Faith

~~~ This year's 28th General Synod in Tampa, Florida, may
have been the least contentious of all the Synods I have attended as a delegate or visitor (six). For example, a resolution supporting The Right of LGBT Persons to Adopt and Raise Children was passed by a unanimous voice vote, and a resolution calling for international LGBT rights was supported by 98% of the delegates. The most controversial piece of business was about changing our form of governance. The amendments approved by the delegates to GS28 will combine the five current governing boards into one 52 member United Church of Christ Board, but only after two thirds of the UCC Conferences also ratify the amendments.
One of the more interesting matters which came out of this Synod was the formation of a national Theological Forum. After some considerable concerns were expressed about whether a Theological Commission might be tempted to pronounce mandates about what we believe in the UCC, the Committee which worked on this resolution changed the name of the group
from Commission to Forum. It is my hope that this will provide a place where some of the less dominant theological viewpoints in the UCC can be expressed and heard, something I am not sure we have done well in the past.
Three new Collegium Officers were elected - the Rev. J. Bennett Guess as Executive Minister of Local Church Ministries, the Rev. James Moos as Executive Minister of Wider Church Ministries, and Mr. W. Mark Clark as Associate General Minister. A new electronic voting system caused some considerable consternation until everyone learned how it worked. Ultimately it seemed to allow for quicker votes than in the past, when tellers were used to hand count votes.
More information about General Synod can be found at ucc.org. - Mike Loser
Navigating Life’s Last Stages
Emmanuel United Church of Christ of York invites all interested persons to attend a four-session program entitled “Navigating Life‟s Last Stages: What Do I Need to Know and Why?” Most of us enter unknown territory when an illness or situation arises that creates the need to make difficult decisions concerning care surrounding imminent death. Confronting these issues not only helps to clarify matters for the one facing death, but gives much needed direction to family and loved ones who may not know what that person‟s wishes may be. Preparing advanced directives and providing the opportunity to share personal wishes with one‟s family can enrich the last stages of life. The program will offer the following: Funeral Arrangements - Sunday, September 18, 2011 – 2:00PM - Mr. Mark Harris, author of Grave Matters: A Journey Through the Modern Funeral Industry. In addition to the traditional choices, more recent alternatives such as “Green Burials” will be explained. Advanced Directives - Sunday, October 23, 2011 – 2:00PM - Many people believe the assistance of an attorney is necessary to prepare Advanced Directives. This is not the case. Diane Gerhart, the Education Coordinator from the Palliative Care Department at York Hospital/WellSpan Health will explain these directives and the options they present. Forms will be available and assistance provided for those interested in completing them. Support Systems and End-of-Life Care - Sunday, November 13, 2011 – 2:00PM - Dr. Dominic Glorioso, Jr. DO. will offer guidance in how to bridge the gap between the medical community and Hospice. What are the different facets of palliative care? How do we begin family conversations during
this difficult time? How do we cope with role reversals? All sessions will be held at the Yorktown Community Center located at 1059 Kelly Drive, York, PA 17404. Pre-registration is not required; however, knowing how many plan to attend will be helpful in preparing the amount of materials needed. Please email [email protected] or call Emmanuel UCC at 717-801-1084 to express interest in attending any or all of the sessions. Visit our website for directions. http://www.emmanuelyork.org.
If you know any woman currently undergoing chemotherapy, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning once per month for 4 months while she is in treatment. To qualify, she must sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It's our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there that care. Be a blessing to someone and pass this information along. http://www.cleaningforareason.org/. You may not know someone going through chemo, but someone on your email list might. Please forward!
October 2011 Newsletter Deadline is September
10th. The Newsletter will be mailed on
September15th. Newsletter submissions should be addressed to:
Lisa K. Young – Editor
3421 Stone Ridge Road - York, PA 17402 Or
[email protected]
If you do, we’d like your email address! We are making the move towards sending out newsletters electronically in
the near future. We will send The Lischey’s Illuminator directly to your email in a *.pdf format, which can be read
by downloading free software from Adobe (which we will send a link for). The Lischey’s Illuminator is already
available electronically on our website www.lischeys.com .
Some reasons for this change are:
1.) It makes us better stewards of God’s creations… we use less paper, less ink, less gas.
2.) It makes us better stewards of God’s money… we buy less paper, less ink, lower our traveling expenses,
lower copying expenses, buy less postage. It will free up office time to do other projects.
3.) Spring Grove Post Office will no longer be accepting bulk mail at their facility beginning in October. At
that time, all bulk mailings with Spring Grove permit numbers will need to be sent through the Hanover
Post Office, thus increasing time used and travel expenses.
4.) In order to send a bulk mailing, you must send at least 200 copies. At this time, our mailing list is smaller
than that, so we are actually mailing newsletters back to the church in order to qualify. If we can cut our
mailing addresses by half, we will be able to send the remaining newsletters first class at no additional cost
to the church, or even save the church some money. This will greatly increase the timeliness of receiving
your newsletter, since third class mail may take up to three weeks to be delivered.
The annual bulk mail fee that we pay is due in January. We’d like to start implementing this change right away, so
the “bugs” can be worked out by then. As we make this transition, we ask for your patience and welcome your
suggestions to improve the communications among our church members and friends. Since this will be new for all
of us, we will be making changes as we learn together. Please share any constructive criticism to help us meet your
needs.
We will continue to print “hard” copies of the newsletter and to mail them to those without electronic means of
receiving an e-version. Be sure to contact the office and let Michele know how you would like to receive your
copy of the Lischey’s Illuminator. You can place the following form in the offering plates or mail it to the church
at 5671 Lischeys Church Rd, Spring Grove, PA 17362.
P.S. – For even more communication options, you can “friend” us on facebook!
