INTRODUCING THEHARRIS CENTER’S FALL LINEUP OF PERFORMING ARTS! Dear Arts Lover,

From the outset, the mission of the Harris Center for the Arts has been to enrich the lives of people throughout the capital region by providing venues and opportunities to experience artistic work, celebrate cultural traditions and participate in the creative process. Since opening in 2011, we’ve had upwards of half a million visits to the Center and the response has been unanimous – the Center really is the place to experience great shows, up close!

And the good news today is that there’s plenty more art and entertainment coming our way again this year – more than 400 performances in all. So many shows, in fact, that we decided it was best to roll out this season with two brochures – one for the fall, and one for the spring. Included here is the work of artists performing now through the holidays, as well as a full year-long calendar (see page 30) so you can also see the big picture of what’s yet to come. As in the past, we have a diverse array of exciting offerings, some from far away, others from nearby, all top flight. Literally something for everyone.

As always, thank you for being part of the Center’s success, and for all of the support and enthusiasm you have shown. Looking forward to seeing you at the theater!

OCTOBERROSANNE CASH:THE RIVER & THE THREAD

The name “Cash” has been synonymous with Folsom for many years—and the Harris Center is proud to announce the return engagement of the eldest daughter of country music icon Johnny Cash. For over three decades Rosanne Cash has been one of the most compelling figures in popular music, with a remarkable body of work noted for its emotional acuity, rich and resonant imagery, and unsparing honesty. These special qualities, which enable her to establish a unique intimacy with her audiences, are rooted in the very beginnings of American country music with its deep cultural and historical connections to the South. Her own thoughtful, genre-blurring approach, which encompasses country, rock, roots and pop influences, has garnered her a Grammy, twelve Grammy nominations and eleven No. 1 singles. Cash will perform selections from her most recent recording, The River & the Thread. “I feel this record ties past and present together through all those people and places in the South I knew and thought I had left behind.”

SMUIN BALLETUNTAMED: Breaking the Boundaries of Ballet

From the front lines of dance, in 1994 Michael Smuin set out to build an American ballet company with a distinctly American accent: “…to infuse ballet with the rhythm, speed, and syncopation of American popular culture.” UNTAMED will include three distinct pieces. In Serenade for Strings, we see choreographer Garrett Ammon unleash his own take on Tchaikovsky’s iconic score. Frankie and Johnny is Michael Smuin’s passionate Mambo tribute to the legendary Gene Kelly. The evening rounds out with Objects of Curiosity, choreographed by Smuin’s choreographer-in-residence, Amy Seiwert. In this evocative piece, Seiwert examines the tensions between desire and restraint, pairing them with a delicate score that mirrors her study on stage. MARTY STUART & HIS FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES

Years from now when they’re talking about the great personalities in country music, they’ll mention Marty Stuart. He’ll be among those personalities because he’s never been afraid to follow his vision, stretch the boundaries of country music, or make big statements about music and society. And when country music strays too far from the heartbeat, he’s been there to snap it back. Virtually everything he’s done from the halcyon “no hats” days of the 1990s until today has paid tribute to the masters: Hank, Mother Maybelle, Cash, Merle.

ROYAL BALLET OF CAMBODIA

Renowned for its graceful hand gestures and stunning costumes, the Royal Ballet of Cambodia, also known as Khmer Classical Dance, has been closely associated with the Khmer court for over one thousand years. Infused with a sacred and symbolic role, the dance embodies the traditional values of refinement, respect and spirituality. The gestures and poses, mastered by the dancers only after years of intensive training, evoke the gamut of human emotions, from fear and rage to love and joy. This art form, which narrowly escaped annihilation in the 1970s, is cherished by many Cambodians as the emblem of Khmer culture.

MARY BLACKwith Róisín O opening

For the last quarter-century, singer Mary Black has been a dominant presence in Irish music, both at home and abroad. She has released eleven studio albums, all of which achieved platinum sales status and spawned countless hits. “One of the best interpretative singers around” (San Francisco Chronicle). The British magazine What Hi-Fi? considers Mary Black’s voice to be so pure that they have repeatedly used it for comparing the sound quality of different high fidelity systems. In an industry noted for its fickleness and its almost insatiable need for fresh novelties, Mary Black’s enduring successes have proven that her depth of talent and her love of singing transcend the generations, as well as national and musical boundaries.

WANT TO HELP THE CENTER WHILE HELPING YOURSELF TO A 15% DISCOUNT?Become a donor member now through a donation at the $150 level or higher and get 15% off your ticket purchases through September 30th to Center Presentations of touring artists and select Community Partner events. It’s part of our special Summer Donor Sale – a thank you to those making annual contributions to support all of the great shows, up close happening at the Harris Center. Donations can be made online at www.HarrisCenter.net or through the Harris Center ticket office at 916-608-6888.

YOUR GENEROUS DONATION CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCEIn February the Harris Center celebrated its third anniversary — how time flies! — and it’s safe to say the Harris Center has fully arrived. In fact, it’s hard to imagine the regional arts scene without it. Performances have been well received, ticket sales are strong, children are coming by bus to experience the magic of the arts during the day, and our community partners and the college’s educational programs are thriving in their new home. In general, the Harris Center has nestled comfortably into the daily life of the region. Thank you for your generous and enthusiastic support.

But while attendance of the Harris Center has been excellent, ticket sales are

but one side of the coin. As is common in the arts, relying on sales alone will not allow the Center to reach its full potential, to be all that it can be for this community. Support to open the Center was generous, coming from state and local bond measures, and many donations from both individuals and businesses — but it must continue, and grow, for the Harris Center to evolve and thrive.

To support the dream of a vibrant regional arts center for this community, please consider deepening your involvement with the Harris Center through an Annual Membership* donation or the naming of a seat (for you, or honoring someone you love). Other opportunities to support the Center are also available.

Each donation makes a difference and is tax deductible** — and formal benefits grow at each level of giving. Benefits can include:

• Opportunity to purchase tickets before they go on sale to the general public

• A 15% discount on tickets purchased by September 30

• Access to donor-only events and the new Art of Wine Reception

• Advance tickets sales for just added shows

Donate today, by going online at www.HarrisCenter.net, where donating can be done with the click of a button.

For more information on ways to give visit www.HarrisCenter.net, or contact Sally Howard, Director of College Advancement, at 916-608-6643 or [email protected].

* Annual Membership benefits are good for one year from the date of your gift.

** Fair market value of benefits provided may affect the portion of a gift which is tax deductible.

DONATE AND SAVE 15%!

Events with this symbol include an Art of Wine reception for Associate-level annual members and higher. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the exceptional artistry of prized El Dorado region winemakers while helping the center bring you great shows, up close. Call for more information.
