DEPARTMENT SPOTLIGHT

The IT Helpdesk is a resource that should be utilized when questions arise on our day to day work responsibilities. From a printer that stopped printing, to creating log in’s for newly hired employees to how to process a negative re-ceiver in Prelude. The knowledge base in the IT Helpdesk is broad and deep. This is the first place to call when “inquiring minds want to know”.

The IT Helpdesk has staff in the office from 5:30am to 5:00pm PDT five days a week. Lisa Hickok can be reached directly at 909-664-0292 starting a 5:30am Pacific Time. For issues outside of these hours the Helpdesk can be reached at 877-441-8194.

Our IT Helpdesk Manager is Louise Shane, yep that’s me. I have been with Harrington for 28 years. I started with Harrington as a billing clerk back in the days when we hand typed in every sales order at corporate for all locations via a handwritten pink shipper. I then became the Accounting Manager overseeing both accounts payable and cash appli-cation and it was during that time I was asked to be a part of the “Core Team” which was a selected group of employees who were responsible for learning the Prelude system inside and out when Harrington chose to change their ERP soft-ware. After the Core Team, I became the Helpdesk Supervi-sor, I then moved on to Training Manager as part of a team that implemented our online training program. I returned to the IT department back in 2009 as our Prelude Business Analyst and have recently included the responsibility of IT Helpdesk Manager to my analyst role. I enjoy playing bingo and cooking and crafts. My husband Bill and I have been married 33 years and are pet parents to three dogs: Hugs, Kisses & Katie and one cat, Albert. Bill and I also enjoy the company of my soon to be 97 year old Mom who lives with us.

Lisa Hickok has been with Harrington for 29 years. Lisa is one of our IT Helpdesk Specialists. During Lisa’s career at Harrington she has held numerous positions such as costing clerk, export sales at a time when all “work order sheets” were faxed into Chino and written up on 4-part shippers and sent to the warehouse to be shipped. Lisa has also been a purchasing agent, inside sales person, Van Nuys office man-ager and IT Helpdesk Supervisor. Lisa was also a part of our “Core Team” back in the late 1990’s. Lisa is one of our most knowledgeable employees on the Prelude system as well as Fastrak and MITS.

Amber McDevitt has been with Harrington for 2 years. Amber started with Harrington at our Riverside branch as a receptionist and joined the IT Helpdesk at corporate Chino as an IT Helpdesk Specialist in September 2016. Amber has a 5 year old son, Nathan who keeps her pretty busy as Amber states “his hobbies are now mine”. Amber enjoys spending time with her son and family.

Bob Radcliff has been with Harrington for over 18 years and has held the position as Helpdesk Technician throughout his

IT HELPDESKBY: LOUISE SHANE

career. Bob volunteers his time with the Southern California American Legion and is the Captain of the District 18 Honor Guard and Color Guard. Bob and his wife have been married for 47 years and have 3 children; 2 girls and 1 boy. Bob also has 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Marco Bonilla is our second Helpdesk Technician having been with us for 9 months now. Marco enjoys air soft, paintball and is getting ready to try golfing. One of Marco’s bucket list items is to see all the Disney worlds throughout the world, having seen two already. Marco has a daughter, Marina age 23 and a son Christian age 14. Marco is also a pet parent to two fur babies, Minnie & Teddy.

Our next example the Material (Polypropylene) is suitable for use with the chemical (Acetaldehyde).

If the Material (Polypropylene) and the Chemical (Acetalde-hyde) are compatible, instead of a Red X, the recommended-service temperature will be provided in Green.

This quick and easy-to-use chemical compatibility guide provides Harrington sales team members and their customers with a valuable tool for ascertaining safe material and chemi-cal combinations.

As is true with any product chemical compatibility con-cern, it is always a good idea to review the specific application, product and chemical with the manufacturer to insure safety as individual manufacturer’s can have proprietary formulas for their plastics.

Be on the lookout for Nupi PP-RCT Pipe and Fittings and Asahi (Ashitec) PP-RCT Pipe and Fittings on the website. With the implementation of the Commercial Water Division, com-plimenting lines of product will be added to the E-Commerce Website. Nupi’s line of Niron products offer a wide range of pipe, fittings and join-ing tools for your commercial water projects.

A total of 683 Nupi Niron PP-RCT pipe and fittings and 414 Asahi PP-RCT pipe and fittings have already been added to the website as of May 2017.

CHEMICAL RESISTANCE GUIDE

Harrington’s website offers helpful customer friendly features such as the chemical compatibility guide, engineering hand-book, joining techniques guide and basic materials guide. These tools are located in the technical library at www.hipco.com.

Does your customer need to know if PVC and Acetone are compatible? Simply refer them to our online chemical guide or ask them to download our chemical guide app.

Below are examples of what compatible and non-compatible material/chemical combinations look like.

The customer selects Material (PVC) and Chemical (Acetone) and then clicks on the submit button.

The customer then receives im-mediate feedback in an easy-to-read legend, letting them know if the material and chemical are compatible.

For this example our Material (PVC) is unsuitable for use with our chemical (Acetone).

PRELUDE TIPS & TRICKS

BY: LOUISE SHANE

This issue we want to stress the importance of logging out of the Prelude system at the end of each day as well as how we exit

out of Prelude properly.

All users are required to log out of the Prelude system at the end of each day. By logging out each day, users are included in any

updates that are done on the Prelude system after hours. Leaving a Prelude session logged in when updates are done, will cause

the user to not see the updates on this old session.

Users are to hit escape until the message noted below is reached. The user will then be taken back to the Prelude log in screen.

Press escape to completely close your current session or sessions.

Once logged out past the Harrington banner, the user should see the following prompt box allowing them to close their Ac-

cuterm session/sessions; chose Close.

At no time should a user press the red X at the top right of the Accuterm session to exit Prelude unless specifically instructed

to do so by an IT Helpdesk employee. Exiting Prelude by closing the session in this manner can and will cause record locks and

data corruption within Prelude. Upon reentry into Prelude, the user may not be able to access the part of the system they were

previously working on due to this record lock causing the user to call for IT Helpdesk assistance regardless.

One reason users consider closing Prelude with the red X is due to a record lock. If two users are trying to access the same

information at the same time a Prelude session will just sit and sit with the cursor blinking. DO NOT RED X OUT! Call the IT

Helpdesk to clear the record lock. Once the record lock is cleared through the Helpdesk, the Prelude screen/cursor will move

allowing the user to continue.

One final note, all users are to be logged out of the Prelude system on month end closing night every month by 5:30PM local

time. Users who are not logged out will be logged out by the IT Helpdesk. Users will not have access to log back in until the start

of the next business day, no exceptions.

The Contact Manufacturer Flag (CMF) is added to parts in Prelude as a notification to sales staff to verify the pricing and part number infor-mation before moving forward with a quote, purchase order or sales order. There are a variety of reasons a CMF flag may be added to a part number; they are as follows:

• The part is from a non-maintained vendor; pricing and description are not verified • Maintained vendor sells non-standard or custom parts that are not in standard price book. The vendor must be contacted for updated pricing• PDS received notification after a price change was already in effect• Pricing for select part numbers are not received from the vendor during a price increase

PDS requests that all price changes are submitted by maintained ven-dors 30 days prior to the price increase effective date. Unfortunately,PDS does not always receive the pricing within this time period. Partsincluded in a price change received after the effective date will havea CMF flag placed on them until the pricing can be updated to ensure that sales staff does not misquote a customer. Once the price change has been completed in Prelude, the CMF flag will be removed.

When a part addition request is received from the sales team, the most important part of the process for PDS is to verify the pricing and avail-ability. If the part cannot be found in a published price book, PDS is required to verify the information with the vendor. The part addition process can be expedited if the sales team indicates on the part addi-tion request that the item cannot be found on the Online Desk Catalog (ODC) and includes a quote with their part add submission. A CMF flag will be added to any non-maintained part number as a warning to the

CONTACT MANUFACTURER FLAGS IN PRELUDEsales team that the pricing and availability needs to be verified. Being aware of the CMF flag will keep quotes and sales orders from being negatively impacted.

(This message displays when products with a CMF flag are added to a quote or order)

In some cases a CMF flag will be found on a part number that incor-porates non-standard component. The vendor might make such a part, however, it may not be published within a standard price list. PDS places a CMF flag on this type of part number to notify the sales team to follow up with the vendor for pricing and availability.

PDS strives to keep all database pricing, descriptions and discount information up-to-date. If the sales team notices a discrepancy PDS encourages them to contact their department so a correction and up-dates can be made. Please send any updated pricing received along with the any available corresponding support back up information to PDS.

As always, please feel free to contact the PDS department with any questions including those regarding the Contact Manufacturer flag. The Product Data Services department is here to assist you with your database and pricing needs and greatly appreciates your feedback and pricing updates.

UNIQUE APPLICATIONS

BY: JANET GIRARD

CASE STUDY Most of New Mexico’s water supply is considered “hard,” containing both calcium and magnesium. Research has shown that providing RO quality water to the herd results in cows drinking more water which increases milk production. While RO systems can have a significant capital acquisition cost, the increase production often results in a suitable returnon investment since the RO membrane will last several years. The frequent ongoing cost would be the prefillters to the RO, and thus managing the cost and performance of these filters is important.

A water system OEM was supplying GE ROSave.Z toseveral dairy farms in southern New Mexico to protectthe RO membrane. As part of a cost managementevaluation, the Graver MBC Series melt blown filter was provided for evaluation. While both products are melt blown technologies, the MBC offers a four zone, graded pore construction which results in an 80% improvement on ow characteristics while resulting in equivalent eficiency. The end user determined that the filters provided nearly three times the life of the GE ROSave.Z, reducing the change-out frequency, thus simplifying maintenance and overall cost of filtration (COF = price of filter + maintenance + inventory cost). The MBC is an economical, yet high performance prod-uct for pre-RO applications.

Water Quality for Animal Herds

Clean, high quality drinking water is mandated for com-munities in most countries by the government. Standards have been established for a single home on a well to the larg-est cities which produce water from wells, surface sources or oceans. In certain instances, such as where nitrates or lead create issues with a single well or for brackish water along coastal communities, reverse osmosis (RO) is required to pro-duce an acceptable quality of potable water. A critical part of these systems is the protection of the reverse osmosis mem-brane. The goal of the pre-RO lter is to reduce membrane fouling by providing a silt density index value (SDI) below four. By doing so, the life of the membrane is increased, chemical cleaning is reduced, which equates to improved operational efficiencies.

Clean drinking water is equally essential for the growth and production of livestock such as cattle, chicken, pig, fish, and horses. As with humans, some water quality parameters such as pH, salinity, odor, taste etc., may affect palatability of the water, thus altering the intake due to taste. It seemsobvious that when water intake increases due to seasonal temperatures or activity level, intake of any “contaminant” present in this water is increased in the same proportion which may result in reduced feed consumption, affecting performance or growth. In animals that do not metabolize water contaminants such as sulfate, the result may be nega-tive short term or long term health effects.

Therefore, identifying the contaminants and installingadequate water purification is well justified for productivity of the herd or flock. This is especially true with cattle and dairy farms where weight loss and low milk production have been seen due to low quality or inadequate drinking water. Based on analysis of over 200 ‘suspect’ drinking water samples from across the U.S. in the last ten years, the most common water quality problems are high iron (greater than 0.3 ppm)and high anion contents (sulfate + chloride; greaterthan 1,000 ppm) that can affect cow health and performance.

HELPFUL HARRINGTON

As I’m sure all of the sales teams with Harrington are aware, we have a report that we are running to help improve growth and sales. The Customer Descending Report is a good way to reconnect with customers who previously purchased from Harrington but have not in a while. Up in Sacramento we had a very good hit with this report. Jason Bohnert called the Department of Fish & Wildlife to introduce himself and see if there was anything he could do to help them out. He got in contact with Sandy Schmidt who informed him that they were looking to buy a lot of PVC material and would like to get a second quote. They were getting their material from Grainger and Sandy even gave Jason the Grainger part numbers when she sent him her RFQ. Needless to say, Harrington was able to blow Grainger’s prices out of the water while still making very good profit for the sales team. They have now established a happy business relationship that should blossom going forward. This was all made possible thanks to picking up the phone and making a call using the Customer Descending Sales Report.

FLASH UPDATES

HEALTHY HARRINGTON

BY: JANET GIRARD

Title: Destination Control StatementBy: Janet Girard

Since April 7, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) no longer requires corpora-tions to publicly disclose the use of conflict minerals in their products. Reuters explained in the action:

The conflict minerals rule was required by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street reform lar and is supported by human rights that want companies to tell investors if their products containtantalum, tin, gold or tungstem mined from the Democratic Replu- blic of Congo (DR Congo), in the hope that such disclosures will curb funding to armed groups. Business groups have contended that it forces companies to furnish politically charged information that is irrelevant to making investment decisions and that it costs too much for companies to trace the source of minerals through the supply chain.

April 7th, 2017, Public Statement from SEC Chairman Michael S. Piwowar is available for viewing upon request. The final rule has not been published at this time. Contact Janet Girard, Export Compliance Administrator for a copy.

EXPORT COMPLIANCE UPDATE

KNOW THE SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION!• Feeling thirsty• Headache or lightheadedness• Fatigue or sleepiness (for children, being less active than usual)• Less frequent urination or decreased urine output• Dark yellow or amber colored urine (urine that is clear or pale yellow indicates you are well-hydrated)• Constipation• Few or no tears when crying• For infants, no wet diapers for three hours

A fun, hydrating beverage: Cucumber Lime Refresher Serve this thirst-quenching drink at your next gathering!

Ingredients:• 1 pitcher of water • 1 cucumber, sliced thinly • The juice of 4-5 limes

Directions: Add lime juice and cucumber slices to the pitcher of water. Stir to mix well. Refrigerate to chill or serve over ice.

Being well-hydrated is essential for good health. This is especially important to remember during the summer months when we need to increase our fluid intake to counteract warmer temperatures and higher humidity. Many of us are so busy that we barely have time to eat, let alone pause for a water break, and we may find we often go hours and hours without quenching our thirst. But staying hydrat-ed has real advantages, including helping maintain our energy and focus so we can operate more efficiently, so it’s important to give our drinking habits the attention they deserve. Here are some simple ways to make fueling up with fluid throughout the day a little easier:

1. Always carry a water bottle, and if you have a desk job, always keep one at your desk. If you have a bottle within arm’s reach, it’s very likely that you’ll mindlessly sip from it throughout the day, without having to make a conscious effort.2. When you’re feeling frazzled or hazy, grab a glass of cold water. Studies show that people instantly feel more alert after drinking H2O. It’s a simple, healthy way to snap out of a midday slump.3. Sip on a mug of herbal tea every evening. If you make this a habit, you’ll add an extra cup of fluid to your tally every single day. On top of that, this relaxing ritual is a wonderful way to de-stress at the end of the day.4. By eating water-rich foods like vegetables, fruits, and yogurt, you’ll automatically up your fluid intake. On the other hand, processed snack foods like chips, crackers, and baked goods have minimal water content.

“To whom it may concern,

I wanted to take a moment and express my gratitude for the support that Harrington Plastics has provided

W. W. Gay Mechanical for the past 5 to 6 years for the huge amount of work we have performed at QORVO

(formerly Triquint) plant in Apopka, FL. As I am sure you are well aware, there is a large amount of specialty

plastic (PVDF / Polypro) installations at that facility and Harrington, especially Ed Rodriguez and Lisa Blanchette,

have been a major part of the success we enjoyed over these past few years. It is always refreshing and supportive

when inside sales and outside sales can work together as they do to provide the means and materials to accomplish

some of the increasingly high demands from our customers. I hope to carry this on into 2017 and future years as my

goal of continuous work at this facility, as well as potential future endeavors, but I know and understand I can only

be as successful as the support that we have in our vendors.

Thank you for the great efforts and support”
