Powerful, Cleansing, Uplifting and Lively - Lemon Scented Tea TreeAn Australian native thrives in South Africa

Opposite top: The shrubs develop many small flower buds during spring and the sweet white petals bloom in early summer. Below: Local workers harvest the leaves and branches of the plant by hand. Many of them live on the Emerald Acres property whilst others travel from the nearby towns to work in the fields.

In the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, the subtropical climate offers a perfect environment in which to grow Lemon Scented Tea Tree. With warm humid summers and mild, light frost winters, the Leptospermum petersonii species flourishes.

Emerald Acres produces some of the world’s finest Certified Organic Lemon Scented Tea Tree essential oil and Sydney Essential Oil Co. is proud to be their official distributor in Australia and Asia-Pacific. >

Origins of Lemon Scented Tea TreeNative to the bush rainforests of east coast Australia, the evergreen Lemon Scented Tea Tree plant is a robust and hardy species. Similar to the melaleuca tea tree family, Leptospermum petersonii can grow well in a variety of environments including wetlands or river banks, sandy soil, rocky outcrops or amongst towering eucalypts in outback forests.

The botanical name is derived from the Greek ‘Leptos’ meaning fine or slender and ‘Sperma’ meaning seed. It is believed that Australian settlers utilised this and other tea tree species as herbal tea remedies to ward off illness.

In the early 1900’s it was first recognised for its essential oil content due to its bright lemony aroma. In the 1940’s the oil was highlighted in the Australian Phytochemical Survey and was the subject of some interest for its antimicrobial benefits. Chemical constituents such as geranial and citronellal found in the oil have made it popular across many industries and today, plantations are not only thriving in Australia but South Africa, Central America, Kenya and Zaire are also producing commercial volumes.

Emerald AcresThe family run farm, Emerald Acres, has a strong agricultural history. The origins of the property date back to 1937 when it began as a common timber ranch. Over the years, the fertile land enabled expansion into other crops such as oranges, mandarins and pumpkins, along with livestock of cattle and chickens.

In 1965, Emerald Acres expanded further with the addition of Lemon Scented Tea Tree. Commercial farming and production >

Opposite clockwise from top: The first Lemon Scented Tea Tree plantation was established in 1965. Today, they have over 20 hectares dedicated to the species. Tractors are used to transport the harvested material from the plantation to the distillation facility. Chipping the leaves and branches maximises the surface area of the plant matter ensuring the optimal distillation. Utilising modern machinery enables Emerald Acres to process the harvest material quickly and efficiently. The skilled team ensure all branches are prepared for essential oil extraction. Freshly harvested plant material is collected ready for chipping and distillation.

of the vibrant essential oil followed soon after and as testament to the proud family history, the current generation of Emerald Acres farmers still have some of the first batch of essential oil ever produced. Meticulous crop management and high quality oil enabled Emerald Acres to increase their property boundaries to more than 20 hectares dedicated to their Lemon Scented Tea Tree plantation.

Organic Certification was attained in 2000 through BCS Germany and they continue to focus on maintaining sustainable and renewable farming practices. Emerald Acres’ strong organic and socially responsible business culture encompasses all facets of the company including product management and fair working conditions for their employees.

Lemon Scented Tea Tree Farming and Essential Oil ProductionEmerald Acres’ Lemon Scented Tea Tree plantation and production has evolved to become completely independent. They harvest seed from their existing shrubs and grow seedlings in their local nursery. These seedlings are planted, nurtured and matured for up to 2 years before they undergo their first harvest.

Once established, the plants will be harvested every 18 months from October through to May the following year. This harvesting cycle allows each shrub to proliferate and regenerate substantial amounts of foliage in time for the next season. As the species is highly durable there is no need for crop rotation or replanting.

Harvest is undertaken by a team of local workers, many of

Opposite clockwise from top: To create a sustainable compost, reeds from the damn are combined with organic waste matter. This compost is utilised to increase soil nutrients across the plantation. Maintaining high quality soil is integral to the success of the Emerald Acres farm. Compost is covered with a special industrial cloth in order to increase absorption and minimise run off. Containers of the brightly scented essential oil are packed for shipping. The wood-fired steam distillation unit is housed onsite, enabling immediate processing. The family run business is proud of its independent production and ethical approach to sustainable farming.

whom live on the Emerald Acres property. Leaves and branches > are hand cut using a small saw-like instrument. All the plant material is collected in a large tractor drawn crate and transported to a central location for chipping. The chipping process is an important step in the cycle as it ensures optimal oil distillation.

The chipped matter is processed through steam distillation to extract the brightly scented essential oil. It takes approximately 140 kilograms of plant material to produce 1 kilogram of oil. After distillation any remaining organic matter is turned into compost, which is recycled on the plantation, ensuring year round nutrients and a fully sustainable production cycle.

Lemon Scented Tea Tree Essential OilVivid and intense, the aroma of Lemon Scented Tea Tree is unique and highly appealing. Whilst not a traditional perfume note, the sweet, lemony tones will enhance an essential oil blend designed to clear the mind and improve concentration.

When incorporated into natural cleaning products, the oil offers strong antibacterial and antimicrobial properties and will help keep your environment free from germs. Vaporising around the home or office will also assist in maintaining a fresh, deodorised atmosphere.

Aromatherapeutically, Lemon Scented Tea Tree supports the respiratory system and can help reduce stuffy symptoms of cold and flu. It can also strengthen the immune system and when combined with rosemary or ginger it can fortify the whole body.

The oil’s cleansing ability is also extremely appealing in personal care products. Shower gel, hand wash and soap will all benefit from its addition, whilst the dazzling aroma will create a revitalising aromatic sensation. When included in facial cleansers the oil can help minimise spots and breakouts but formulate with low percentages to ensure a balanced aroma profile. 1

Working as a massage therapist can be a truly rewarding career. But there’s more to it than just having good hands. We think the best of the best also possess these other important character traits.

cOMpassiON

Healing through touch is a personal and

intimate process. Whether performing a

remedial treatment or relaxation session, it

is imperative that your client feels safe and

comfortable in the environment. This

includes the treatment room and

equipment, as well as your personal style

and one to one connection.

The client’s physical and emotional

wellbeing must always be considered, so

those predisposed to being empathetic,

compassionate and kind, often make the

best therapists.

cOMMuNicatiON

Effective communication skills are

extremely important. Your ability to listen,

assess and discuss treatment plans and

lifestyle recommendations will help

enhance the client’s health and wellbeing.

Equally, recognising mannerisms and body

language and following your intuition as

to when to provide silence or offer

conversation during the treatment, can

make or break the client’s experience.

Awareness and being present with your

client is the key here.

Loving what you do makes a difference to

how well you do it every day. Maintaining

your enthusiasm and motivation is a must

when working as a massage therapist, as your

energy directly influences the quality of your

treatment. Developing a technique which

allows you to centre yourself before each

session, such as a brief meditation or some

fresh air, will help in preparation and enable

you to be the best care-giver you can be.

KNOWLeDge

Education and training in massage

techniques, anatomy and physiology, is the

foundation of a good therapist’s ability to

perform suitable treatments. Commitment

to continuing education will broaden your

expertise and develop your professional

network. In addition to this, it is important

to recognise how the various tools of your

trade suit different massage modalities.

Your choice of massage oil and or the

inclusion of essential oils can be tailored to

suit specific massage styles or particular

skin types, and your client’s overall

experience will most certainly be enhanced

with the appropriate matching of oils. 1

Milk Thistle oil – Certified OrganicIntroduced to our portfolio in July 2013, Certified Organic Milk Thistle oil is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids. The Silybum marianum plant is native to the Southern Europe Mediterranean region and grows well in warm, dry climates. It is a hardy species that is now cultivated in many other countries around the world including Austria, China and Argentina. It is such a prolific species that in some countries, such as New Zealand, farmers are seeking to contain its natural propagation.

Milk Thistle oil is cold pressed from the seed and contains high levels of linoleic acid (48-58%) as well as significant levels of oleic acid (26-40%). These essential fatty acids are highly effective in >

According to a recent industry report, the organic cosmetics industry is experiencing a significant growth period “as a result of consumers’ increasing focus on natural compounds and health and safety”.±

Driven by this consumer demand, new and emerging brands, as well as established companies, are investing in new product research and development. maintaining a healthy complexion as they help reduce transepidermal water loss.

Another key constituent, Silymarin, offers fantastic antioxidant benefits to the skin. It can assist in protecting from sun damage and other environmental pollutants, making it an ideal choice for anti-ageing cosmetic formulations.

The oil has a lovely lightweight texture and is easily absorbed leaving the skin feeling soft and supple. Its pale, straw yellow colour and very low odour make it an impressive ingredient when creating a scent-free emulsion. The hydrating action of creams, lotions and body butters will be enhanced by its inclusion.

In massage oil blends at 5-10%, Milk Thistle oil provides good slip and leaves your client’s skin richly moisturised. It is suitable for all skin types and is recognised for its ability to minimise redness and improve overall skin tone. It is highly noted for leg work as it may help alleviate the symptoms of varicose veins.

Lip balms, face oils and treatment masks are also other products in which Milk Thistle oil will surpass expectation. Immediate sensory results will be achieved with the skin feeling naturally nourished.

Pomegranate Kernel oil – Certified OrganicAnother excellent addition to our carrier oil range, Certified Organic Pomegranate Kernel oil is a luxurious cosmetic ingredient.

It has a very interesting compound profile including common constituents such as oleic, linoleic, stearic and palmitic acids but it also contains a high level of punicic acid. This component is unique to Pomegranate and takes its name from the fruit’s botanical, Punica granatum.

This distinctive omega-5 fatty acid makes the oil extremely valuable in skincare as it provides a particularly powerful

antioxidant action. It is also recognised for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to minimise lipid accumulation which can lead to cellulite.

Believed to have originated in ancient Iran, Pomegranate is now produced throughout the world. The Mediterranean, the Middle East, Northern Africa and even parts of Asia and the Americas all cultivate the popular fruit. It is predominantly used in the food industry but with its unique and highly sought after properties, it is seeing its demand in cosmetics increasing.

The cold-pressed oil has a pleasant, slightly fruity aroma and a soft yellow colour. Its lush, velvety texture feels sumptuous to the touch and penetrates deeply leaving the skin plump and nourished.

With a high phytosterol content, Pomegranate Kernel oil is a great addition to formulations for dry skin as it can help reduce the irritation caused by flaky or chapped conditions. It is also known for its regenerating properties and is an excellent anti-ageing ingredient. The oil can stimulate cell growth in the epidermis and promote a fresh, youthful complexion. When applied directly to the face and neck it will help improve the skin’s overall elasticity and can assist in minimising the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Pomegranate Kernel oil is also fantastic in haircare products, as it will help to strengthen the strands and improve lustre. Massaging into the scalp will increase blood flow and encourage healthy hair growth, whilst reducing the potential for dandruff and other complaints.

It is an exceptionally functional carrier oil that performs wonderfully in emulsions, balms or soaps. 1

Both of these oils are available in sizes 100mL, 500mL, 1L, 5L and Bulk.
