NEWS & HIGHLIGHTSSTREET DATE: JANUARY 13, 2015
2015 marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. One of the bloodiest conflicts in American history, it tore the country apart, pitting family against family and neighbor against neighbor. For 1865, their final album, Anonymous 4 chose to explore the songs of hope and home that bolstered the spirits of Civil War soldiers and their loved ones. Joined by folk music superstar Bruce Molsky, the album completes their popular trilogy of Americana recordings (p.9). Paul Lewis is one of the finest pianists of his generation. On his latest release, he plays Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition in its original version for solo piano (p.10). Violinist Philippe Graffin is the soloist in works by Joseph Jongen’s on the latest volume of Hyperion’s acclaimed Romantic Violin Concerto series (p.15). Mozart’s four Horn Concertos are among the composer’s most popular works. English natural-horn virtuoso Pip Eastop offers superb readings of these gems, paired with the equally cheery Horn Quintet (p.17). Other classical releases worthy of note include a disc of Handel’s music for Queen Caroline with Les Arts Florissants (p.19) and a DVD of Handel’s opera Rodelina with Nicolaus Harnoncourt (p.5). In non-classical releases, jazz takes the spotlight. Discovered by Quincy Jones and featured in an Oscar-worthy documentary on Clark Terry, pianist Justin Kauflin makes his solo début this month on Jazz Village with Dedication. Playing with soul and emotion well beyond his years, Kauflin offers a superb set of twelve originals (p.23). Three new titles from Smalls Live round out the month with swing (p.25).

René Jacobs explores the roots of Baroque operaComposed at a time when neither oratorio nor opera existed, Emilio de’ Cavalieri’s magisterial musical drama Rappresentatione di anima et di corpo combines song, stage action, dance, and instrumental music in perfect harmony. On this new recording, maestro René Jacobs illuminates this key work, written at the dawn of the Baroque revolution.

IMPORTThroughout his life, the oboe played a key role in the music of Georg Friedrich Handel. For no other instrument did he compose such passionate, dramatic and virtuosic music. On this disc, the Batzdorfer Hofkapelle presents a selection of
Handel’s most beautiful works featuring the oboe. Xenia Löffler, member of the Akademe für Alte Musik Berlin, is the soloist. Vocal parts in the arias with oboe are sung by the young coloratura soprano Marie Friederike Schöder, a shooting star of the baroque music scene.
IMPORTJean-Marie Leclair, ordinaire de la musique du roi in the court orchestra of Louis XV, was considered “The Corelli of France” by his contemporaries — and not without reason. The duos for two violins without basso continuo stand out in his oeuvre,
not least because of their unusual instrumentation. In them, Leclair introduced a new art of violin-playing that combined Italian virtuosity with the elegance of French dance. On this release, two proven baroque specialists, Florian Deuter and Mónica Waisman, perform a selection of these spectacular works.

IMPORTFrom the Middle Ages until the nineteenth century, plainchant was sung polyphonically all over Europe — in a great variety of ways. It is no exaggeration to say that for centuries it epitomized the sound of church music for congregations. Fauxbourdon
was a means of solemnizing the Divine Office by embellishing the plainchant melody. This double CD featuring Dominique Vellard and the Ensemble Gilles Binchois offers a selection of this music that reflects the variety and diversity of four centuries of French polyphonic plainchant.
IMPORTLouis Schwizgebel has been described as ‘a pianist with a profound gift’ (The Guardian, August 2013) and an ‘insightful musician’ (The New York Times, May 2013). Born in 1987, he is already well-known on the international scene. His third album
for Aparté is devoted to two early masterpieces by Beethoven. Schwizgebel was selected by BBC Radio 3 as a BBC New Generation Artist. Here he plays with one of Britain’s finest orchestras, the London Philharmonic, conducted by Thierry Fischer.

IMPORT SACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Symphony No. 2 of Johannes Brahms was composed in the summer of 1877. Its cheery and almost pastoral mood often invite comparisons with Beethoven’s sixth symphony. On this SACD from Channel Classics featuring Iván Fischer leading his Budapest Festival Orchestra, Brahms’s ‘pastoral’ symphony is paired with two overtures. The Tragic Overture offers a somber contrast to the sunny mood of the symphony, while the Academic Festival Overture ends the program on a positive and uplifting note.

IMPORTJohn Kitchen has established a hugely popular se-ries of concerts at Usher Hall, and draws on its rep-ertoire to follow up his 2004 recording of the then newly restored instrument with a program that fur-ther represents the vast variety of music that draws
in the Edinburgh crowds. Kitchen was a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Edinburgh, where he continues as University Organist. Following the restoration of the Usher Hall organ in 2003, he was appointed Edinburgh City Organist with promotional and curatorial duties, a post he still holds.
IMPORTRohan de Saram, one of the world’s most distinguished cellists, teams up with the equally eminent pianist Benjamin Frith in a very interesting and distinctive selection of works for cello and piano that span eight decades. From the
sunny romanticism of Brahms to the melancholy of Sibelius to the modernity of Ivor Keys, this release is a fascinating recital disc performed by two outstanding British musicians.

IMPORT On this recording, Paul Lewis performs two major works of the keyboard repertoire. Decidedly programmatic, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition is more commonly heard today in Ravel’s orchestral version. However, the original for solo piano is both a technical tour-de-force and a brilliant example of the composer’s coloristic gifts. The pairing is Schumann’s Fantaisie Op.17, a work whose movements originally had evocative titles (Ruin, Triumphal Arch, Constellation). The ‘program’ was removed before publication, but the ‘pictures’ Schumann intended listeners to imagine remain.

IMPORTFortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout continues his multi-disc survey of Mozart’s music for solo keyboard with volume seven of the series. The first six have been met with universal critical acclaim from around the world. This program of this release
explores the elegance and drama that are ever-present in Mozart’s music. Most notably, Bezuidenhout performs two works influenced by the composer’s 1778 stay in Paris — the grandly proportioned Sonata in A minor, K.310 and the dazzling Variations in C on “Lison dormait”, K.264.
IMPORTThe name Astor Piazzolla is synonymous with the word tango. A musical ambassador who carried the signature sounds of Argentina’s cafes and nightclubs to concert halls around the world, his instantly recognizable compositions (attractively arranged
here for harp, violin and bandoneón) are infused with elements of jazz, fusion and even classical baroque. Featured performers include former Boston Symphony principal harpist Ann Hobson Pilot, violinist Lucia Lin and Juan Pablo Jofre on bandoneón.

composer, both by the selection of the works and by the compelling performance of the orchestra.

IMPORTThe Romantic Violin Concerto series reaches Belgium and the music of Joseph Jongen, a composer more celebrated for his organ music now, but who was equally admired in his day for his orchestral and chamber works. On this new album, Philippe Graffin collaborates with the Royal Flemish Philharmonic and Martyn Brabbins in Jongen’s Violin Concerto, one of the composer’s first substantial works. Also included are other works for violin and orchestra, and a Rapsodie by Italian Romantic Sylvio Lazzari who was influenced — as was Jongen — by the music of César Franck.

IMPORT Mozart’s Horn Concertos are perhaps the most popular works ever written for the instrument. This album presents all the works Mozart wrote for his lifelong friend, horn player Joseph Leutgeb, who was one of the foremost players of his day. In these five works Mozart captures the public persona of an instrument most readily associated with all things hunting, but he also brings it indoors: lyrical episodes, and especially the slow movements, show the very soul of the instrument. Natural horn player Pip Eastop’s technical ability and musical inventiveness are palpable in these hugely enjoyable renditions. He is accompanied by the Eroica Quartet and The Hanover Band led by Anthony Halstead (who has also provided an ending for the unfinished K417, Horn Concerto No 2 in E flat major).

IMPORT These three mid-priced reissues in Hyperion’s Helios series feature Piers Lane bringing his admired technical bravura and innate musicality to the music of Scriabin. On his disc of the complete Études, one can hear the gradual but total transformation of Scriabin’s musical language. He began with a richly romantic and strongly emotional style centered on Chopin. After 1900, the texture and rhythmic structure of the music became increasingly intricate and fluid, while his sense of form grew ever more focused and concentrated. Lane’s two discs of the complete Préludes are bold and compelling, matching technical bravura with a rich vein of poetry and color and communicating the composer’s vivid and exceptional imagination.
IMPORTQueen Caroline was an emblematic female figure of the 18th century: the wife of King George II of England, a woman of great beauty, a champion of science and the arts, Caroline d’Ansbach was also the friend and patroness of Handel. The latter was entrusted with the solemn music composed for the grand ceremonies that marked the reign. This recording featuring William Christie and Les Arts Florissants brings together, for the first time, three works underlining the strong link between the monarch and her favorite composer.

IMPORTThis recording pairs works by two composers who were in regular contact at the court of Esterházy. The piano trio occupies a significant place in the output of Joseph Haydn. Some forty years separate his Trio in G minor from the Piano Trio No.2 of
Johann Nepomuk Hummel, a remarkable virtuoso whose melodic gift won him the admiration of Mendelssohn. The Trio Chausson is featured on this recording, which brings out both the connections and contrasts between these great composers.
IMPORTDomenico Scarlatti was born in 1685 — the same year as Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Only a small fraction of his compositions were published during his lifetime; his 555 keyboard Sonatas were published long after his death. These
virtuosic single movement works display remarkable harmonic originality and contain influences from Iberian folk music. Pierre Hantaï’s three-disc Scarlatti series dating from the early 2000s is now available in a boxed set at mid-price. Upon release, each of the volumes was met with the highest critical acclaim.

IMPORTA major musical figure of the 18th-century, in his time, Telemann was more popular than Bach. This master of instrumental music was open to French and Italian influences and to the new galant style that flourished in Germany. Telemann wrote music
notable for its considerable panache. This is especially true of his chamber music, a selection of which is offered here on this recording featuring the ensemble La Rêveuse.
IMPORTSince winning two prizes at the ARD International Music Competition in 2005, Serbian sisters Sanja and Lidija Bizjak have achieved worldwide praise for their solo piano and piano duo performances alike. For their debut recording on Onyx, they have
created a superb program underpinned by two brilliant concertos for two pianos and orchestra by Poulenc and Martinu. These major works frame equally challenging compositions for two pianos alone by Stravinsky and Shostakovich.

IMPORTChina Meets Europe is the second in Wergo’s series of ten recordings of the music of Enjott Schneider. Schneider is a German composer, musicologist and music educator. He is known for his film work, having won the Bavarian Film Award in 1990, the
Filmband in Gold in 1991, and the Deutscher Fernsehpreis in 2007. China’s rich culture has fascinated Schneider for a long time. This recording presents two works which, though they owe their sound primarily to western symphonic ideas, also incorporate spiritual and musical influences from the East.
IMPORTWolfgang Riehm is a prominent figure in the European new music scene. Riehm’s early work, combining contemporary techniques with the emotional volatility of Mahler and of Schoenberg’s early expressionist period, was regarded by many as
a revolt against the avant-garde generation of Boulez and Stockhausen (with whom he studied). This disc offers a portrait of Riehm’s recent compositions, including the fascinating recorder concerto Au bord d’une source, which is loosely based on Franz Liszt’s Années de Pèlerinage.

IMPORTFile in: JazzProduced by Quincy Jones, Dedication is the Jazz Village debut by piano prodigy Justin Kauflin. The album features twelve original compositions by Kauflin. His style embodies — without being derivative — the “quiet fire” lyricism of Bill Evans (whom Kauflin credits as his “biggest influence at age 14”), the nimble and mercurial qualities of Bud Powell, the genial melodiousness of Herbie Hancock and a bit of Dave Brubeck’s gregarious percussiveness. Kauflin’s side men on the album are Billy Williams on drums, Chris Smith on bass, Matt Stevens on guitar and Etan Haziza on nylon guitar. Kauflin is also the subject of the award-winning documentary Keep On Keepin’ On, which chronicles his mentorship and friendship with the legendary musician and teacher Clark Terry. The film won Best New Documentary Director and the Heineken Audience Award at New York’s prestigious Tribeca Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Boulder Film Festival.

IMPORTFile in: JazzGábor Szabó was an influential jazz guitarist famous for mixing jazz, pop-rock and his native Hungarian music. Szabó escaped Soviet-dominated Hungary in 1956 and moved to the United States where he attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. After a stint with Chico Hamilton in the early 60s, Szabó recorded a well-received span of albums under his own name on the Impulse! label. His playing strongly influenced Carlos Santana. Indeed, Santana’s 2012 instrumental album Shape Shifter includes a song called “Mr. Szabo,” played in tribute in the style of Gábor Szabó. These two reissues from Dutton feature albums originally on the Mercury label. Faces was released in 1977 and Nightflight was released in 1976. Nightflight produced the biggest hit of Szabó’s career, a remake of producer Bunny Sigler’s song “Keep Smilin’.” Both discs include bonus tracks.

JAZZ JANUARY 2015
DOMESTICFile in: JazzThe SmallsLIVE label features recordings made at the famous Smalls Jazz Club in New York City. Established in 1993, the venue earned a reputation in the 1990s as a hotbed for jazz talent and one of the best places in the city to see rising talent in the New York jazz scene. These three recordings live up to that reputation. Spike Wilner Trio: Live at Smalls is the pianist’s second release on the label. Wilner’s improvisation and compositional depth is reminiscent of jazz masters of the 40s and 50s. Ian Hendrickson-Smith Quartet: Live at Smalls is his second release. Hendrickson-Smith has worked and recorded with such world-class artists as Amy Winehouse, Al Green and Michael Buble. Theo Hill: Live at Smalls is pianist Theo Hill’s debut recording as a leader. The recording pays homage to Hill’s first appearance as a professional pianist at Smalls Jazz Club.
IMPORTFile in: World / Africa / Ivory CoastGRAMMY® award winner and BBC Radio3 Music Award nominee Dobet Gnahoré is one of the freshest talents in new African music. She sings in seven languages and embraces musical styles from
West African Mandinka melodies to Congolese rumba and from Ivory Coast’s ziglibiti to Cameroonian bikoutsi. On her fourth album, Na drê, Gnahoré returns with force. She is accompanied by guitarist Colin Laroche de Feline, bass player Clive Govinden & drummer Boris Tchango. Lokua Kanza & Paco Sery also sit in for two of the album’s tracks.
IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / PortugalWith Rua da Emenda, António Zambujo continues on his mission to revolutionize fado. On this album, he leaves the well-beaten track of traditional fado behind and turns it into his very own musical genre
— a new, elegant, vocal art that mixes saudade and ardent choruses. The appealing ambience of Rua da Emenda, which blends Zambujo’s velvety voice with sparkling guitar and melancholic clarinets, evokes the flavors of historic Lisbon.

IMPORTFile in: RockJazz Village’s exciting new Magma series primarily focuses on classic recordings, reissued in celebration of the band’s 45th anniversary. However, Slag Tanz — a masterpiece of symphonic metal — has previously only been heard in live performance. Not surprisingly, the album radiates with all of Magma’s singular intensity. Powerful, hypnotic and unclassifiable, there has been absolutely nothing to compare to them in the last fifty years.
