Canadian virtuoso Marc-André Hamelin leads off a month of exciting new releases with his first recording of piano music by Debussy, which includes the complete Images and book two of the Préludes (p.13). Other keyboard highlights include Javier Perianes playing Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words (p.11), a Schubert recital from Shai Wosner (p.26) and 2014 Gramophone Award winning harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani playing Rameau’s Pièces de Clavecin (p.17). The brilliant pianist Yuja Wang also is featured on Masterpieces in Miniature, the latest release from the San Francisco Symphony, which boasts a selection of brief musical gems hand-picked by maestro Michael Tilson Thomas (p.29). Acclaimed Schubert lieder cycles on harmonia mundi and Onyx continue, with Matthias Goerne’s Winterreise (p.9) and Florian Boesch’s Schwanengesang (p.23). IMPORTFollowing on acclaimed releases of Bellérophon and Phaéton, Christophe Rousset continues his revival of Lully’s tragédies lyriques for the Aparté label with Amadis. One of the composer’s finest scores, Amadis is a masterpiece of French Baroque music. It

was Louis XIV himself who asked Lully and his librettist Quinault to base an opera on Montalvo’s Amadis de Gaula. Avoiding the usual mythological subjects gave the composer and librettist an opportunity to expand the scope of the tragédie lyrique genre.

IMPORTBenno Moiseiwitsch was one of the many great Russian pianists born in Odessa. He recorded prolifically from 1916 until just before his death and was particularly highly regarded for his Chopin, Schumann and Rachmaninov. Moiseiwitsch

met Rachmaninov at his American debut in 1919 and the composer praised Moiseiwitsch’s interpretations of his works and even claimed the recording of the Piano Concerto No.2 presented here was superior to his own. All these recordings present Moiseiwitsch at the height of his powers.

IMPORTSince his success at the Van Cliburn International Competition, Philippe Bianconi has built an impressive international career. His Chopin recital program for La Dolce Volta is anchored by the four Ballades. He pairs them with an exploration of Chopin’s late works with the fourth Scherzo and the Barcarolle. On their Schubert recital disc, pianists Philippe Cassard and Cédric Pescia focus on works written in 1828 – the last year of the great composer’s short life. The recording pairs the penultimate sonata with three works for piano four hands. Extase Maxima, a fascinating recital from pianist Wilhem Latchoumia, features two original compositions by Wagner and five pieces inspired by his operas. The program, which will appeal to both Wagnerites and connoisseurs of pianistic rarities, is at once unique and coherent.

IMPORT With this album (curiously called Vol.2), the French ensemble Les Arts Florissants, led by conductor Paul Agnew, launches a series of three albums devoted to the Madrigals of Claudio Monteverdi. Each volume will be associated with one of the cities that have marked the course of the composer. This release, dedicated to Mantua, features Madrigals from books IV, V and VI. IMPORTParadizo commemorates the 250th anniversary of the death of Rameau with a recreation of the music heard at his memorial service in 1764. This world première recording centers around the “Rameau’s Funeral” version of Jean Gilles’s Messe des morts. Nearly sixty years after it was written, an arrangement – probably by Rebel and Francoeur – was prepared for Rameau’s memorial. The duo “updated” the work by changing the instrumentation and incorporating musical references in Rameau’s honor. The recording features the combined forces of Collegium Vocale Gent and Capriccio Stravagante, led by acclaimed conductor Skip Sempé.

IMPORT The ensemble Les Lunaisiens chronicles music connected with the three 19th Century revolutions of France. After the ancient régime and a brief Napoleonic craze, France took almost a century to define its national symbols. The 19th century was

a time of battles, resistance and barricades. From 1795 to 1879, it took a long, perilous and bloody route for La Marseillaise to become the national anthem of all the French and for the tricolor flag to be acclaimed as standard of the Republic.

IMPORT Handel and Rameau composed some of the most original keyboard works of the 18th century, and both composers were adept at rewriting and reusing musical ideas under several guises. In that spirit, Rameau’s Pièces de clavecin en concert and are performed

here on the organ, paired with three of Handel’s Organ Concertos. Soloist Paul Goussot plays the spectacular Dom Bedos organ accompanied by Ensemble Zaïs led by Benoit Babel.

IMPORT Cage composed his Number Pieces during the last six years of his life. Their titles indicate the number of performers or parts. Their notation is based on fixed and flexible “time brackets.” The fixed brackets show when a musician should begin and

end a pitch or tonal event. With the flexible brackets, the interpreter decides, within a predetermined time frame, when an instrument enters and when it falls silent. This disc featuring pianist Sabine Liebner explores two of Cage’s late masterworks.

IMPORT Kurt Schwitters’s Sonate in Urlauten (Sonata in Primal Sounds) blurs the boundaries between speech and music. The literal translation of the title indicates a link between language and the musical form of the sonata; Ursonate could be translated literally as

“sound poetry.” This groundbreaking work, more than any other work in the genre, reached an unparalleled fame. On this CD, the SprechKunstTrio (speech art trio) Sprechbohrer presents their unique interpretation of Schwitters’s magnum opus.

IMPORTThis album features the world première recording of Elliot Goldenthal’s Othello Symphony. Performed by the AUKSO Orchestra under the direction of Marek Mos, the work was drawn from the composer’s successful three-act ballet Othello that
