Mr. Jacobs’s careening, crisp recordings of Mozart’s operas are idiosyncratic joys, and his Finta Giardiniera brings out both the farce and the melancholy in a long-overlooked work.
(10/10 Review)
These are the first period-instrument accounts that rank among the finest recorded performances of these underrated works.
Review)
Mr. Gergiev’s conception of the work seems to have deepened, and the St. Petersburg orchestra’s sound, neither diluted nor amplified, lies closer to the heart of the music.
Praetorius supplies most of the music, and Doron Sherwin, the incomparable cornetto virtuoso, provides much of the improvisational charge.

For the second volume in his complete cycle of all 32 sonatas, Jonathan Biss has chosen the early but large-scale Grand Sonata Op.7 from 1796, a work exceeded in length only by the Hammerklavier sonata, and the most famous of all the sonatas – the Moonlight. The disc also features the Piano Sonata No.24 and the Fantasy Op.77.

In the wake of recent events in the US, Jordi Savall’s focus on peace for his Alia Vox collection Pro Pacem is particularly welcome (p.4). Channel Classics presents a superb collection in celebration of the Britten centenary featuring the Amsterdam Sinfonietta (p.5). Keyboard virtuoso Richard Egarr returns to Bach this month with a traversal of the six English Suites for harmonia mundi (p.8). Also on harmonia mundi, Matthias Goerne adds a new volume to his Schubert edition (p.7) and the VocalConsort Berlin performs rare music by Gesualdo (p.6). Pianists are in the spotlight on Hyperion’s releases, which include Steven Osborne playing Mussorgsky (p.10) and Angela Hewitt accompanying Andrea Oliva in Bach’s Flute Sonatas (p.9). Sir Colin Davis completes his traversal of Nielsen’s symphonies with this month’s LSO Live release of Symphonies Nos.2 & 3 (p.13). On the Mariinsky label, Valery Gergiev launches his biggest project so far — a complete traversal of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. The first release is Die Walküre, with a stellar cast that includes Nina Stemme and René Pape (p.15). Non-classical priorities include a special edition of Ahmad Jamal’s acclaimed Jazz Village album Blue Moon (p.25), Omar Sosa’s tribute to Miles Davis (p.27), jazz vocalist Sandra Nkaké’s first album, Maansadi (p.26) and Om Suite Ohm, a brand new release from indo-blues sensation Harry Manx (p.24).

IMPORTA master of counterpoint, Johannes Ockeghem dominated the Franco-Flemish school for almost forty years. His Missa prolationum has been called one of the most extraordinary contrapuntal achievements of the fifteenth century. It was the first multi-part work to use a unifying canonic principle for all its movements. This recording, performed using manuscript sources, features the Ensemble Musica Nova led by Lucien Kandel. Also included are the motets Alma Redemptoris Mater and Salve Regina.

The sweet sound of Bach’s cello
IMPORTBach’s cantatas make use of an amazing diversity of instruments, both old and new. Among the ‘new’ instruments was the violoncello piccolo, a rare instrument that was popular for a brief period at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The addition of a fifth, higher string provided the instrument a unique lightness and delicacy in the upper registers. This collection featuring cellist Ophélie Gaillard and the ensemble Pulcinella focuses on arias from Bach’s cantatas that are scored for the violoncello piccolo. The arias are interspersed with instrumental transcriptions from the Schübler Chorales and the Orgelbüchlein.
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDPro Pacem (For Peace) consists of twenty-three excerpts from the Alia Vox catalogue, spanning five centuries of music, from Gilles Binchois to Arvo Pärt. The cover art was designed by Catalan painter Antoni Tapiès, shortly before his death in February. The accompanying 1,000-page book features texts by renowned writers, including the French scholar Edgar Morin. This essential collection assembled by maestro Jordi Savall makes an eloquent statement about the world, both as it is and as it should be, and its debt to the power of music.

“ This is a wonderful concept, perfectly realized. Very clever, for sure, but more important, musically rewarding.”— CLASSICSTODAY.COM
IMPORTRenaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo is known for his intensely expressive madrigals and sacred music that use a chromatic language not heard
again until the late 19th century. As we commemorate the four hundredth anniversary of his death in 2013, one of Gesualdo’s last works still remains to be discovered: the second book of his Sacrae Cantiones. These motets in six and seven voices have remained in obscurity due to the fact that several of the vocal parts were lost. Thanks to his methodical research, musicologist and conductor James Wood has managed to reconstruct the score for the first time and perform these works as they might have been sung in 1603. This fascinating investigation took three years to complete. Leading the VocalConsort Berlin, Wood offers illuminating readings of these long-lost gems of the Italian Renaissance.

IMPORTThe seventh volume in baritone Matthias Goerne’s superb Schubert lieder series features some of the composer’s most famous and beloved songs, including the title work, the dramatic and powerful Erlkönig. Joined here by the acclaimed pianist Andreas Haefliger, Goerne offers performances that are rich with the deep colors and intense emotions that are synonymous with the Romantic era. Selections include Im Abendrot, Der Wanderer, An den Mond, Auf der Bruck and Die Forelle.
“Goerne’s virtuoso vocal sculpting draws you into the inner landscape of each song, his warm, expressive baritone shaping detail often understated by lesser artists. This prom-

IMPORTWhatever the elusive truth may be regarding the “English-ness” of these Six Suittes avec leurs Preludes, there is no denying the imagination of Bach’s keyboard writing. Each of the English Suites is headed by a prelude of substantial proportions, followed by a group of wonderfully varied dance movements, all of which are perfectly suited to showcase the joyful brilliance of harpsichordist Richard Egarr’s prodigious technical and interpretive skills.

IMPORTFans of pianist Angela Hewitt will be delighted to hear her in a chamber music setting, accompanying Andrea Oliva (who was described as “one of the best flutists of his generation” by Sir James Galway) in a program of J.S. Bach’s Sonatas for Flute (including a work once attributed to Johann Sebastian that was actually written by his most famous and talented son, CPE). Of unfailingly remarkable quality, all these works exploit the full potential of an instrument which was only just coming into its own when they were written. Oliva’s lyricism and agility coupled with Hewitt’s musicianship — not to mention her lifelong rapport with Bach’s music — make this an album to treasure.

IMPORTSteven Osborne is one of the finest pianists recording today. His recent release of Rachmaninov’s Preludes was critically acclaimed as the greatest modern version since Ashkenazy. Now he turns to further cornerstones of the Russian repertoire with this recording of Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition (a work that has been in Osborne’s concert repertoire for many years), coupled with two sets of Prokofiev’s miniatures. Mussorgsky’s masterpiece is one of the most popular programmatic works of the 19th century as well as a great pianistic challenge. Prokofiev’s delightful Sarcasms and Visions fugitives are performed with Osborne’s subtle yet brilliant use of color, exploring moods ranging from the mystical to the grotesque.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDWith this eagerly awaited recording of Symphonies Nos.2 & 3, Sir Colin Davis completes his enlightening Nielsen symphony cycle. The first title in the series, Symphonies Nos.4 & 5, was Editor’s Choice in Gramophone and Orchestral Choice of the Month in BBC Music Magazine. The second, with Symphonies Nos.1 & 6, was awarded CD of the Week in the Sunday Times. Nielsen’s second symphony was inspired by a naïve but vivid painting representing the four temperaments of the human personality. Adopting these defining characters for each of the symphony’s movements Nielsen realized a sonic depiction of emotion. His third symphony, the most openly Danish of his symphonies, portrays spaciousness, power and vitality and is considered his greatest international achievement.

IMPORTThis recording offers a perfect introduction to Georg Philipp Telemann’s k e y b o a r d o e u v r e . Amongst the vast body of compositions produced by this immensely prolific
composer, the keyboard music is often given short shrift. However, there are countless treasures among these works, and this album gives a selection of them some justly deserved limelight. Olivier Baumont, who performs here on five magnificent historical instruments, highlights the sparkle and wit of these rare musical gems. In addition to his catalogue of over forty highly acclaimed recordings, Baumont is also a professor of harpsichord at the National Conservatory of Music and Dance in Paris, has published several books and has been a collaborator in many theater productions.

About the Artist
IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDThe Mariinsky label presents its most ambitious project to date — the first release in a complete cycle of Richard Wagner’s epic Der Ring des Nibelungen, conducted by Valery Gergiev. Recorded in the sumptuous acoustic of the Mariinsky Concert Hall, the cycle will feature a sensational cast, helping create the most finely crafted Ring cycle of modern times. Die Walküre, the first installment, was recorded during sessions and performances in 2011 and 2012 and stars Anja Kampe, Jonas Kaufmann, René Pape, Nina Stemme, Mikhail Petrenko and Ekaterina Gubanova. It will be followed in September 2013 by Das Rheingold, with Siegfried and Götterdämmerung completing the cycle in 2014. The Mariinsky Theatre has close connections with Wagner and his music, since the composer conducted at the theatre and was even offered the post of Music Director. It is also believed to be the first place where any of the music from the Ring was performed.

After winning the prestigious All-Soviet National Conducting Competition in 1966, Yuri Temirkanov was invited by Kiril Kondrashin to tour Europe and the United States with legendary violinist David Oistrakh and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra. The very next year, Temirkanov made his debut with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra (then called the Leningrad Philharmonic) and in early 1967, was invited to join the orchestra as Assistant Conductor to Yevgeny Mravinsky. Since 1988, Temirkanov has been the Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, with whom he regularly undertakes major international tours and recordings. Other positions he holds include Music Director of the Teatro Regio di Parma and Music Director Emeritus of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. These two new live recordings features a Temirkanov favorite, Dvorák’s beloved “New World” symphony, and Shostakovich’s fifth symphony — performed by the orchestra that premièred the work in 1937.
IMPORTMisha Dacic’s concerts at the Miami Piano Festival in recent years made a sensational impact, as is evidenced on YouTube. They show that appearances do not deceive: he is as much of a wizard as he appears. A true artist, with limitless technique, he has the ability to conjure up unheard-of tonal effects from the piano, evoking the most amazing timbres and sonorities. Dacic’s affinity with Liszt shows in the selection of music on this new recording, which is centered around three masterpieces: the epic B-A-C-H Variations, the seldom heard Grosses Konzertsolo and the Dante Sonata.
IMPORTPiano Classics presents a second volume in their series of recordings by the great Italian pianist Sergio Fiorentino. This superb, specially-priced six disc set is devoted to a complete survey of Fiorentino’s Liszt recordings. Including sessions dating back to the late fifties, this volume includes the complete first book of Années de pèlerinage (Suisse), a fine selection of Hungarian Rhapsodies, a disc of late piano pieces, both piano concertos and an assortment of studies and character pieces, rounded off by a magnificent reading of the B minor Sonata.

IMPORTThis seventh and final installment of the Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra covers the years 2000 to 2010, a rich period in the orchestra’s history largely characterized by the changing perspectives of a new century. Indeed, it was in 2004 that Riccardo Chailly relinquished his position as chief conductor, to be replaced by the Latvian maestro Mariss Jansons, who shifted the orchestra’s focus more towards Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss and Shostakovich. A generation of orchestral players retired and were succeeded by a group of outstanding young musicians, most of them hailing from outside the Netherlands, resulting in a growing internationalization of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Also in this period, the launch of the orchestra’s own in-house record label, RCO Live, breathed new life into its rich recording tradition. A complete track listing is available upon request.

IMPORTJean-François Dandrieu was one of the most brilliant artistic figures of France’s Regency period. In addition to his position as organist at the Chapelle royale, Dandrieu was a professor and a composer, producing, among other works, six Livres de Clavecin. Performed by organist André Isoir and harpsichordist Olivier Baumont, this anthology of works for keyboard ranges from offertories to noëls and from overtures to musettes, in addition to the inclusion of a large selection of expressive character pieces.
IMPORTThis program completes Testament’s series of reissues of EMI recordings made by the fabled Hungarian violinist Johanna Martzy. In addition to Martzy’s rare technical and interpretive mastery, the concertos by Mendelssohn and Mozart on this disc display her unique coloristic expressiveness. As an added bonus, these are two of the earliest recordings made by the great Wolfgang Sawallisch, a master accompanist as both pianist and conductor, as well as a profound interpreter of the symphonic literature. Both concertos are receiving their world première European and American releases.

These two live recordings feature memorable collaborations between two legendary conductors and the magnificent Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. On the first disc, Herbert von Karajan leads the orchestra in a performance from the 1970 Salzburg Festival. The concert focuses on the orchestra’s famous principal wind players in Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante and the orchestra’s superb leader Michel Schwalbé in Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra. Pierre Monteux is featured on a specially-priced live recording taken from a concert at Berlin’s Hochschule für Musik. It is particularly special because Monteux conducted the Berlin Philharmonic on only two occasions — in 1933 and again for this 1960 concert.

In the early 1960s, Wergo launched a series that would become legendary in the history of contemporary music recordings. Studio Reihe Neuer Musik featured some of the most significant and cutting-edge compositions of the modern era. Many of the recordings in the series have never been released on CD and some have been unavailable in any form for many years. Arnold Schönberg’s sprechstimme monodrama Erwartung, is possibly the most famous title in the series. Soprano Helga Pilarczyk offers a riveting performance of one of the most important and influential works of the 20th century. Luc Ferrari may not be the most famous name in the series, but his music had a profound impact on music of the time. His mixing of magnetic tape and instruments, inspired by Varèse, was combined with pioneering work in the area of ambient music and the use of natural sounds.

The Ysaÿe Quartet recently announced that, after enjoying a highly-successful thirty-year performing career, the group would disband in January 2014. To conclude their long partnership, the quartet has scheduled a series of concerts over the next fourteen months focusing primarily on the music of Beethoven. This new recording features a quartet from each of Beethoven’s major periods. The String Quartet No.16 is a fitting valediction to both their career and to this recording, with its famous motivic question, “Must it be?” answered with an emphatic — and positive — affirmation. The aesthetic and stylistic connections between Brahms and Schoenberg are brought to light on this recording, which pairs Brahms’s String Quartet No.3 with Schoenberg’s string sextet Verklärte Nacht. For the sextet, the quartet is joined by violist Isabel Charisius and cellist Valentin Erben.
BLUES
IMPORTFile in: BluesHarry Manx has been called an “essential link” between the music of East and West, creating musical short stories that wed the tradition of the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas. For Om Suite Ohm, his eleventh album, Manx teamed up with composer/producer Hans Christian (who worked with Daniel Lanois and was bassist on Robbie Robertson’s solo CD) in
Australia where he recorded with guests Yeshe and didjeridoo player Ganga Giri, who played with Peter Gabriel. His trademark sound and style reaches a peak here with an incredible version of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme,’’ a song that is sure to find its way into Manx’s setlist for years to come. Also included is “Carry My Tears,’’ a song written for a recently departed friend that garnered Manx a nomination for Songwriter of the Year at the Western Canadian Music Awards.
“I prefer the small venue to the arena; the music surrounds you. But this artist’s music did more, it took me out of the room to another place. Mr. Manx transforms his slide guitar to
sound like Indian raga. Add to that his background in blues, throw in an occasional harmoni-ca, six-string banjo, stomp box and mohan veena, and you are listening to an original.”

IMPORTFile in: JazzFollowing on the success of Sandra Nkaké’s Jazz Village début recording Nothing For Granted, (which won her the “Best Newcomer” award
from Victoires du Jazz) the label is proud to offer a reissue of her 2008 album Mansaadi (Little Mother), the disc that first introduced the public to her unique voice. With inflections of rock, soul, folk and blues, the tracks on Mansaadi are elegantly soulful and playfully eclectic, with unexpected touches like the accordion on “Happy,” and an explosive reinterpretation of “La Mauvaise Réputation” by Georges Brassens. After hearing it, there is no doubt that this album marked the birth of a major new jazz talent.

DOMESTICFile in: JazzEggun , in the West African spiritual practice of Ifa and its various expressions throughout the African Diaspora, are the spirits of those who have gone before us, both in our personal families and those who serve as our spiritual guides. Omar Sosa’s album Eggun: The Afri-Lectric Experience began as a commission from the Barcelona Jazz Festival in 2009 to create a tribute performance to Miles Davis’s classic Kind Of Blue on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Inspired by the album’s various musical elements and motifs, Sosa wrote a suite of music honoring the spirit of freedom in Davis’s seminal work, with jazz textures enriched by the subtle and expressive use of electronic elements. Special guests on the project include guitarist Lionel Loueke and percussionists Pedro Martinez and Gustavo Ovalles.

IMPORTFile in: JazzBenny Goodman’s 1962 visit to the Soviet Union marked the first time a jazz band from the United States had ever toured the country.
For the occasion, the legendary “King of Swing” assembled a fantastic big band that played to an appreciative audience that was mostly unfamiliar with the genre. Goodman arranged to record a number of concerts during the tour, and RCA Victor released excerpts of his final week in Moscow on a two record set released in December of the same year. Goodman’s performances on the recording are first rate and the sound quality is superb. The repertoire includes a number of his favorite standards, but there are also some less familiar tracks including Tommy Newsom’s “Titter Pipes,” which features both Phil Woods and Zoot Sims. This set has been long-awaited by jazz fans everywhere, and Dutton’s usual top-rate remastering makes it a must-have.

IMPORTFile in: World / IranMohammad Shams was born into a family of musicians in Tehran in 1954, and has composed over 600 pieces of traditional, classical and modern music. Claiming that classical music, “has to keep its nature, but also evolve with time,” he fuses his Persian artistry with elements of Western music and has heralded classical Persian music at international events such as the London Festival. On Un Regard Persan, Shams offers listeners a sampling of his colorful and expressive orchestral compositions.
IMPORTFile in: World / IndiaThe recordings on this double album are the result of field-trips into a region of South India called the Nilgiri Hills (the “Blue Mountains”) which is home to the Kota, Toda, Mele-Nadu Irula and Alu-Kurumba people, among others. These indigenous groups create music — on instruments like the conical, belled ‘shawm,’ the bamboo trumpet and the idioglottal clarinet, with singing in a variety of techniques — that covers a vast aesthetic field, from the immediately “Indian” accents of Kota bhajan, to Toda singing which seems to come from another world altogether.
