Bezuidenhout’s Mozart series

street date: december 11, 2012

December’s top release for the month is harmonia mundi’s Canciones españolas — a song recital from mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink featuring works by Spanish composers Falla, Granados and Rodrigo (p.8). Also on harmonia mundi, Daniel Kawka and the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain perform works by the influential 20th-century Russian composer Edison Denisov (p.9). Hyperion’s key releases include Christopher Purves singing a unique recital of Handel’s arias for bass (p.10) and the début of conductor Donald Runnicles leading the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Bruckner’s Symphony No.7 (p.11). On the Mariinsky label, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra continue their Shostakovich cycle with the powerful Symphony No.7 (p.15). Worthy of special note are a reissue of the Talich Quartet’s famous complete Beethoven (p.14) and Wergo’s release of rare recordings of Conlon Nancarrow (p.22). Key non-classical releases include jazz interpretations of music by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla with the Orchestre National de Jazz (p.27) and a DVD of a live performance by Ravi Shankar on East Meets West Music (p. 30).

IMPORTFrançois-Xavier Roth leads his period-instrument orchestra Les Siècles in an album of music by Franz Liszt featuring two of the composer’s symphonic poems. Inspired by the Divine Comedy, Liszt’s Dante Symphony depicts Dante’s journey from hell to paradise. The work is especially innovative, featuring numerous orchestral and harmonic advances including progressive tonality, anticipating its use in the symphonies of Gustav Mahler by forty years. Orpheus is one of four symphonic poems Liszt composed as character sketches of men of creative genius, heroism or legend. Worthy of note is the work’s rich instrumentation, which includes two harps used to represent Orpheus’s lyre.

IMPORTThis book and CD combo set is the third release in a series of recordings produced by the renowned French publisher Actes Sud that strives to connect the visual arts with the sonic. In these deluxe sets, music is paired with photography to explore the synergies between the two art forms. This set is unusual in that both the music and the photography are produced by one person, the composer Pascal Dusapin. The aim is to create an all-encompassing work expressing the close relationship between the artist’s output in both genres. For the musical side of the production, pianist Vanessa Wagner plays Dusapin’s seven Études for piano. The book text is written by Michel Onfray.

IMPORTThis release features consort works by the English composer Henry Purcell, played by Bruno Cocset and his ensemble Les Basses Réunies. The Fantazias and In Nomines, Purcell’s major achievements in the chamber music genre, were little-known during his lifetime. Inspired by the composer’s careful study of the music of Matthew Locke, these works are rich with harmonic complexity and melodic invention. Cocset opts for violins over the more commonly employed viols in this illuminating reading of works that are now considered to be among Purcell’s finest.

IMPORTThis innovative program pairing the seemingly antithetical compositions of Claudio Monteverdi and Astor Piazzolla was first featured at the Ambronay Festival in 2009 and was greeted with nearly universal acclaim. The brainchild of Argentine conductor Leonardo García Alarcón and his ensemble Cappella Mediterranea, this unusual collection highlights the surprising connections and musical synergies present in works that are separated by centuries of time and thousands of miles. Under the baton of Alarcón, the madrigal and the tango are revealed as be musical sisters, both conjuring up powerful emotions — from nostalgia to sorrow to ecstasy — and rich in improvisational freedom.

IMPORTEnsemble Stravaganza was founded by violinist Domitille Gilon and harpsichordist Thomas Soltani. The group’s forces include regular members Ronald Martin Alonso on gamba and guitarist Damien Pouvreau, and are augmented as needed by members of other prestigious period instrument ensembles. The group’s début disc focuses on music from the Habsburg court, one of the most powerful empires in European history. Music enlivened the Habsburg Court starting in the fifteenth century. The four composers featured on this album were beneficiaries of the artistic enlightenment of the court.

IMPORTFrench Baroque composer Jacques Duphly was born the year of the death of Louis XIV and died the year of the storming of the Bastille. His entire output consists of four books of harpsichord pieces. Duphly was not an innovator; he revolutionized neither style nor technique. As a result, he is regarded by some as a minor composer. Yet he composed splendidly for the harpsichord, exploring all its registers. Duphly’s primary influences were François Couperin and Jean-Phillipe Rameau, whose musical style dominated France in the first half of the 18th century. Through this recording, Christophe Rousset demonstrates the virility of Duphly’s compositions.

IMPORTEnrique Granados was one of the great composer-pianists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A deeply nationalist musician, his works primarily mine the rich heritage of Catalan and Spanish folk music for their inspiration. Today, Granados is best remembered for his evocative solo piano works, however his output also includes a great deal of orchestral music and six operas. Many of his piano compositions, due to their rich Spanish flavor, have been transcribed for the classical guitar — including the work recorded here by the young French virtuoso Guillaume Coppola, the Danzas españolas. In preparing for this recording, Coppola carefully studied original manuscripts and critical editions. In this powerful and insightful recording, his piano shimmers with the colors and the warmth of Spain.

DOMESTICSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDOn their recording Sacred Songs of France, the first disc in a three-volume French choral pilgrimage, the acclaimed American choir Gloriae Dei Cantores takes listeners on a journey from the earliest days of organum in the Middle Ages to the delights of seventeenth century polyphony. This fascinating collection samples the musical genius and spiritual art of celebrated composers such as Josquin des Prez, and their lesser-known compatriots including Dulot, Goudimel and Mouton. Scholars will appreciate this disc for the generous survey it provides, while choral fans will love the grace, beauty and remarkable clarity of this glorious music.

IMPORTSchoenberg’s Gurrelieder is a massive cantata for five vocal soloists, narrator, chorus and large orchestra based on poems by the Danish novelist Jens Peter Jacobsen. The title refers to Gurre Castle in Denmark, which is the scene of Jacobsen’s recounting of a medieval love-tragedy (and Danish national legend) revolving around the love of the Danish king Valdemar IV for his mistress Tove and her subsequent murder by the jealous Queen Helvig. This superb live recording featuring Zubin Mehta leading the Israel Philharmonic highlights Mehta’s affinity for the repertoire of Mahler, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Schoenberg and the Second Viennese School. Gurrelieder holds a special place in the conductor’s heart as it was the last work he conducted as he concluded his thirteen year tenure with the New York Philharmonic.

IMPORTWritten between 1902 and 1965, the canciones recorded here faithfully reflect both the evolution of Spanish art song in the 20th century and the attachment of its composers to France. Manuel de Falla’s famous Seven Spanish Folksongs are placed here alongside elegant little gems like the Three Spanish Songs and Four Sephardic Songs of Joaquín Rodrigo. From the enchantments of Andalusia to the laments of León, accompanied by the talented pianist Anthony Spiri, Bernarda Fink invites you on a journey through a Spain of dreams.

IMPORTOne of the key thinkers of Russian music of the second half of the 20th century, Edison Denisov left a major legacy. This recording presents a selection of works from the composer’s late period. The title work, Au plus haut des cieux, features settings of texts by Georges Bataille in a work that is emblematic of Denisov’s work during his later years. This deeply spiritual music echoes a comment found in one of Denisov’s personal notebooks, “Before the face of the Night, I am alone and powerless.” Performers include soprano Brigitte Peyré accompanied by the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain under the direction of Daniel Kawka.

IMPORTThe magnificent voice of Christopher Purves is featured on this unique recital disc of Handel’s bass arias. The works heard here demonstrate the range and brilliance of Handel’s writing for this voice and include selections from his Italian and English operas, English classical drama, Biblical oratorios, literary odes and a masque. Handel’s endlessly imaginative gift for characterization is fully explored, with Purves commanding an extraordinary emotional and technical range — from the buffo blustering of Polyphemus in Acis and Gatalea to the loving musings of Abinoam in the oratorio Deborah. Gramophone Award-winning Baroque band Arcangelo led by director Jonathan Cohen provide the sparkling accompaniments.

IMPORTHyperion is delighted to present Donald Runnicles, chief conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, in his début on the label. Runnicles commands his orchestra in Bruckner’s most popular symphony — repertoire that is at the heart of his musical life, and in which he has few living equals. Recent concerts of the works of Bruckner and Wagner have received the highest critical praise, acknowledging the orchestra and their conductor as consummate performers of this music.

IMPORTThis recording features the Szymanowski Quartet and pianist Jonathan Plowright playing two important chamber works from 19th-century Poland, both completely unknown outside their native country. Zarebski was a virtuoso pianist, more feted during much of his short life as a performer than a composer. However his Piano Quintet is truly a masterpiece, demonstrating an originality and stature that match piano quintets by better-known composers. Zelenski was a teacher rather than a performer, ending his distinguished academic career as Director of the Conservatory in his home town of Krakow. His Piano Quartet is a passionate, lyrical work, combining the Romanticism of Mendelssohn and Schumann with a piquant Slavic element.

IMPORTChristopher Herrick’s acclaimed series of Buxtehude’s music for organ is now complete with this fifth and final volume. Here he returns to the composer’s (disputed) home country of Denmark and the organ of Mariager Klosterkirke. Highlights include the magnificent Praeludium in C major, BuxWV137 (known to English-speaking organists as the Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C) and the Chorale Fantasia on the Christmas melody Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, BuxWV188 — among the longest and most elaborate of Buxtehude’s chorale settings.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo & Multi-channel/ DSDValery Gergiev and the acclaimed Mariinsky Orchestra continue their Shostakovich symphony cycle with an emotionally-charged performance of the composer’s seventh symphony. Shostakovich dedicated his Symphony No.7 to the defiance shown by the citizens of Leningrad in the face of Nazi totalitarianism. Despite the widespread reassessment that has since taken place regarding the inspirations for his symphonies, the “Leningrad” symphony remains a highly-potent symbol for the residents of modern-day St. Petersburg. Previous releases in Gergiev’s Shostakovich cycle have received two GRAMMY® award nominations, as well as Chocs from Classica magazine (France) and Editor’s Choices from Gramophone magazine (UK).

Aldeburgh, where Neven took a walk by the water — in the dark. The overwhelming smells and sounds of the sea led the singer to reflect on the inspiration that the sea and the water have been for generations of poets and composers. Joined by pianist Hans Eijsackers, Neven sings selections including Fauré’s L’Horizon chimérique, Debussy’s Beau soir and Schubert’s Auf der Donau.

IMPORTChen Reiss’s début album Liaisons was internationally acclaimed for both the repertoire selection and the sheer brilliance of her musicianship. For her second Onyx release, Reiss is joined by the acclaimed pianist Charles Spencer for a wonderful collection of songs on the subject of The Nightingale and the Rose. These songs convey the magic of being in love, the heartbreak of love lost, the memories, the fun, the fantasies all associated with that strange, mysterious, dangerous and all-powerful condition. In repertoire that ranges from Purcell to Krenek, Hahn to Meyerbeer and from Grieg to Rimsky-Korsakov, this is a program tailor-made for Reiss’s remarkable voice. One listen and it will seduce you.

Although commissioned by Count Apponyi, the quartets that bear his name were actually inspired by a series of successful public concerts of Haydn’s music in London organized by Johann Peter Salomon. The emotional, virtuosic and powerful music found in these quartets presages the spirit of the Romantic period. The Prazák Quartet is fully in tune with the grand gestures found in these quartets. Alexander Tcherepnin’s travels to the Far East provided a major stylistic inspiration to his music. He is particularly noted for creating his own harmonic languages. The composer’s complete output for cello and piano is offered here played by Prazák Quartet member Michal Kanka. Lastly, the quartet is featured in a collection of Russian chamber music that pairs lesser-known works by Glinka with Tchaikovsky.

Praga’s Richter Edition features SACD remasters of classic recordings by the great Russian pianist Sviatoslav Richter. This month sees the release of three further installments in the series. First up is a disc focusing on solo works by Beethoven. These live recordings of the Piano Sonata No.31 and Diabelli Variations, connect in the inspiration and debt they owe to the music of JS Bach. Continuing the solo piano theme, the second release features solo works by Chopin. Recorded over a span of twenty-plus years, these performances display Richter’s special affinity for the music of the great Polish composer. The program offers a delectable sample of the great composer’s tuneful, passionate romanticism. The third release features reissues of Schubert studio recordings from the 60s and 70s, ranging from the dark Piano Sonata No.21 from 1828 to the sunny, lyrical and buoyant Piano Sonata No.13 from 1819.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ Stereo/ DSDThis exciting disc features rare recordings by the legendary pianist Clara Haskil and the beloved mezzo Teresa Berganza. Carefully remastered to DSD from open-reel tapes from 1960-61, this SACD includes two masterworks by Manuel de Falla. Igor Markevitch and the Concerts Lamoureux orchestra accompany Haskil in the Nights in the Gardens of Spain. Berganza is paired with Ernest Ansermet and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in the complete ballet The Three Cornered Hat.

IMPORTSACD Hybrid/ MonoThis special Super-Audio reissue compilation from Tahra celebrates the amazing artistry of two kindred Romanian musicians — Dinu Lipatti (1917-1950) and Clara Haskil (1895-1960) — each a protégé of Georges Enescu and each a bona fide legend in the history of the piano. Completely remastered for SACD, the recordings on this disc encompass a 1953 recital given by Haskil at the Château de Ludwigsburg (with selections by Bach, Scarlatti, Debussy and Schumann) and a 1948 broadcast recording of Lipatti playing the Bartok Piano Concerto No.3 with the Südwestfunk-Sinfonieorchester led by Paul Sacher.

IMPORTFor decades, Conlon Nancarrow’s creative activity was confined to the privacy of his studio:

he wrote music for the player piano, punched it manually onto paper rolls, and listened to it played by his mechanical instruments. There is no more authentic way of experiencing Nancarrow’s extraordinary repertoire than listening to it on his own specially modified instruments. In honor of the 100th birthday of Nancarrow, Wergo presents Late and Unknown, an album featuring numerous first recordings on the composer’s own player pianos. The program documents Nancarrow’s practice of turning old rolls into new works and his usage of the player piano as a tool for testing practically everything he wrote. Of special note, current technology has made possible the first recording of a properly coordinated version of the ambitious Study No. 48c for two superimposed rolls.

IMPORTTo celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jean Françaix, Wergo has compiled selected recordings from the label’s catalog (some available on CD for the first time) that display the wide-ranging talents of this acclaimed French composer and pianist, known for his prolific output and vibrant style. Though he often put his own modern spin on the old modes of expression, Françaix was an avowed neoclassicist who rejected atonality and he drew from great literature of the past for his vocal settings. This three-disc set includes not only his own compositions, but also Françaix’s arrangements and re-workings of pieces by Chabrier, Schubert and Chopin.

IMPORTFile in: JazzJelly Roll Morton wrote, “Any music can be played in jazz, since you know how to do it. No matter what you play but the way you play it.” This famous quotation describes perfectly the music of French jazz vocalist Matthieu Boré and the direction of the repertoire of his new album, Roots, perfectly. The album includes a mix of original works and pop standards in a fascinating blend that is easy on the ear. Boré reworks an array of hits from the 80s (favorites of his youth) such as “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” (George Michael) and “Girls & Boys” (Prince), giving them a Rhythm ‘n Blues and soul-jazz sound.

IMPORTFile in: JazzA gypsy converted to the religion of American hot jazz, Django Reinhardt was one of the most emblematic musical personalities from among the many artists who livened up Paris during the finest hours of the interwar period. The first major jazz soloist to come out of Europe, his influence over the status of the guitar in jazz was considerable. This recording is an ideal sampler of the artistry of Django Reinhardt. Its 24 tracks illustrate the different stages of the artist’s career up until his sudden death at the age of only 43. Django has now joined the exclusive circle of jazzmen known only by their first name. His name personifies jazz and his music is the epitome of Paris Swing.

IMPORTFile in: JazzDedicated to gypsy-swing’s world capital, Romane’s album Samois-sur-Seine captures the atmosphere of the gypsy-bars and restaurants on the banks of the river Seine. Romane’s guests are some of the greatest players on the manouche scene, including guitarists Angelo Debarre and Babik Reinhardt and violinist Florin Niculescu. Romane also broadens his vocabulary by inviting the great classical guitarist Roland Dyens. This fifth volume in the complete works of Romane, recorded in the magical atmosphere of the town where Django Reinhardt was laid to rest, provides unique testimony to the virtuosity and vitality of the gypsy-music scene.

IMPORTFile in: JazzThe music of Astor Piazzolla is a national treasure in the composer’s home country of Argentina. With his ingenious use of traditional forms such as the tango in non-traditional ways, Piazzolla’s music always nods to the past while remaining strikingly modern. The mindset of Daniel Yvinec and his Orchestre National de Jazz is totally in tune with this philosophy. Gil Goldstein’s arrangements focus on the melodies and rhythms found throughout the Argentinean master’s works — the essential components that give this music its very special flavor. Piazzolla! by the ONJ offers a new and audacious look at this composer that is full of surprise and wonder.

IMPORTFile in: World / South America / ArgentinaAstor Piazzolla carved out his own musical aesthetic, as personal as it is universal, and raised tango to the ranks of classical music without causing it to lose any of its force, its character, its originality or its roots. The clear break he brought about by shaking up the musical codes of tango felt like sacrilege to the older generation, but like a much-needed revolution to those who dreamed of modernity. The second real icon in the history of Argentinian music alongside Carlos Gardel, Piazzolla, like his illustrious forefather, left his imprint on this style of music in spite of its rules, which were anchored in a set of seemingly immutable traditions. This splendid retrospective, released to celebrate the anniversary of Piazzolla’s death, features original recordings made by the master himself spanning from 1945 to 1961.

IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / SpainJuan de Lerida and his family left Spain to escape the brutality of the Franco regime, but he never lost touch with his Gypsy roots. He taught himself guitar at the age of four by copying what he heard on flamenco recordings. One of the founders of the Nuevo Flamenco style, de Lerida did not make his name through recordings. He had been a kind of local legend, well known in his own community, waiting until age 40 to release his first album, Quimeras. De Lerida’s music is a unique blend of flamenco, tinged with jazz, world music and even classical flavors. For his second album, Noche En Blanco, de Lerida has partnered with Seville native David Peña Dorantes, descendent of a famous line of Andalusian Gypsies.

IMPORTFile in: World / South America / ArgentinaCuarteto Cedrón was founded in Buenos Aires in 1964. At the outset, the group’s aim was to broaden the tango repertoire by introducing poems that were not originally designed to be sung. The group launched with innovative “Gotán” café-concerts and performances in bookstores and galleries. As their fortunes increased, the quartet began touring and established strong ties to Europe. The dangerous political climate in Argentina forced the group to leave the country, and they settled in Paris in 1974, living there in exile until 2004. Today, the group is by no means limited to the tango. It also includes milongas, waltzes, candombes and even cowboy songs. This collection, Anclao en Paris (Stuck in Paris) reissues five of Cuarteto Cedrón’s classic albums from their years in France.

Decade — In Concert: Live in Escondido presents an intimate look at the 91-year-old living legend of Indian music, Ravi Shankar. Kozlowski, known for his work on documentaries featuring the likes of Jeff Bridges and Jackson Browne as well as feature films such as Travellers and Magicians, offers a uniquely personal perspective on Shankar. The filmmaker also produced a documentary honoring Shankar called Sangeet Ratna and co-produced (along with George Harrison) a collection of Ravi’s work called In Celebration. The love of subject is clear in the film, but it is Shankar’s raw and powerful performance that leaves the most lasting impression. East Meets West Music is proud to present this important testament to a great artist simply unable to stop making transformative music.

IMPORTFile in: World / Caribbean / CubaFour years before the musical adventure that led Ry Cooder in Havana to record the legendary Buena Vista Social Club, the French journalist, DJ and producer François Jouffa had already recorded the most important singers and musicians of Santiago de Cuba, the country’s second city and the capital of son. The blending of African, European and American, but also Haitian, influences have made Santiago de Cuba’s music the embodiment of Cuban-ness, the best of which is here handed down to posterity. Artists include Septeto Tipico Oriental and Conga Los Hoyos.

IMPORTFile in: World / Europe / FranceAlready brought together on record by Franck Bergerot and Patrick Tandin in the days of Paris Musette, Daniel Colin (accordion, bandonéon) and Raúl Barboza (accordion) have become vibrant legends on their instruments. The scope of this project and their frequent tours in Japan made them genuine ambassadors for a popular, alternative kind of French music. Produced by Dominique Cravic, founder of the Primitifs du Futur, Rencontre à Paris is a cultural melting-pot where musette meets swing, tango and Amerindian music. It’s a snapshot of a generous, popular culture that finds authenticity in roaming over the cobblestones of Montmartre or the Butte aux Cailles, and it succeeds in crossing oceans and time.

Al-Aiedy’s aim is always to transport lovers of multicultural music to innovative musical worlds where rigor and the aesthetics of music play important roles, but leave plenty of room for the sensual, emotional and the poetic. His album Radio Baghdad evokes a passionate and suave Orient at the crossroads of Eastern and Western influences.
