Connect hose, wand and nozzle

Connect hose Push the hose connector end (A) into theopening (B) on the front of the cleaner.

To disconnect hose from the cleaner,press on the button (C) on the hose con-nector and pull forward.Note: The flexible hose contains elec-trical wires for connection to thepower nozzle and should not be usedif damaged. The wires should not beseen through the outer skin.

Attach wand and powernozzle Push the end of the wand with thepronged plug (D) firmly into the end ofthe hose until the latch (E) clicks.

To remove the wand from the hose,press on the thumb latch (E) located onthe end of the wand.

Push the opposite end of the wand intothe power nozzle until the button projec-tion (F) on the end of the wand clicks.

To release , step on quick disconnectfoot pedal (G) and remove nozzle.

Hard surface floor cleaning The power nozzle can be used forcleaning hard surface floors such aswood, linoleum, vinyl, asphalt and rub-ber tile, sealed cork, concrete and ter-razzo, as well as carpet. To turn the brushes off for hard surfacefloor cleaning, press the FLOOR/CAR-PET (E) switch again.Note : The headlight will be OFF whenin hard floor cleaning mode.

Floor surface selection Carpet cleaningWhen using the power nozzle for carpetand rug cleaning, press the FLOOR/CARPET switch (E). The agitator brush-es on the power nozzle will rotate andcan be seen through the window (F).The nozzle adjusts automatically to vari-ous carpet pile heights.

Power nozzle Handle positions The handle has two positions when usedwith the power nozzle: upright and operating.

To lower handle to operating position,place your foot firmly on the power noz-zle and pull handle back.

Turning cleaner onand adjusting powerlevel After assembling cleaner, plug cord intoelectrical outlet. Turn cleaner on bypressing once on the SUCTION CONTROL switch (A), located on thehandle grip. The Suction Control Switchlight (B), located on top of the cleanerbody, will glow red and will indicateincrease in suction with display of addi-tional red bars. The suction control canbe increased or decreased by pressingon the suction control switch.

To turn cleaner off, press the OFF (C)switch.

2-3Polarized plugTo reduce the risk of electric shock, thisappliance has a polarized plug (oneblade is wider than the other). Thisplug will fit in a polarized outlet only oneway. If the plug does not fit fully in theoutlet, reverse the plug. If it still doesnot fit, contact a qualified electrician toinstall the proper outlet. Do not changethe plug in any way.

Telescoping extensionwandThe spring latch (D) on the wand allowsthe extension to be adjusted to thedesired length. Release spring latch bypushing it forward and adjust wand tothe desired length. Spring latch will lockthe wand into the selected position.

The dirt cup needs emptying before thedirt reaches the “MAX” line (A) on thedirt cup or after every use if preferred.CAUTION: Very fine materials, suchas face powder, cornstarch, fireplaceashes or fireplace soot, may seal thefilter and cause loss of suction. Whenusing the cleaner to remove this typeof dust, empty the cup and clean thefilters often.

How to clean stairs Place cleaner on stair. Using the furni-ture nozzle or powered hand tool (avail-able at additional cost if not includedwith your cleaner), clean stairs from bot-tom to top.

Select the proper toolF. Dusting brush/furniture nozzle this2-in-1 tool may be used with the brushesin place (dusting brush) for carved furni-ture, table tops, books, lamps, lightingfixtures, venetian blinds, baseboards,shutters and registers. Remove thebrushes (furniture nozzle) and use it forupholstered furniture, draperies, tapes-tries, mattresses, clothing, automobileinterior and carpeted stairs.

G. Crevice tool may be used in tightspaces, corners, and along edges insuch places as dresser drawers, uphol-stered furniture, stairs and baseboards.

H. Small brush is used for cleaning thedirt cup filter.

I. Powered hand tool (available at addi-tional cost if not included with yourmodel) may be used for upholstered fur-niture, carpeted stairs, and hard toreach places.

J. Hard floor tool (available at addition-al cost if not included with your model)may be used for walls and very irregularhard surface floors such as brick andslate.

Cleaning tools The cleaning tools are convenientlystored in the cleaner underneath the toollid. Pull up on edge of lid in recessedarea to open.

A tool may be attached to either thehose or telescoping wand by pushing itfirmly onto the hose end or the end ofthe wand. Twist tool slightly to tighten orloosen the connection.

The cleaning tools have many uses.Select the tool best suited for the clean-ing task from the following descriptions.

Edge cleaning Special edge groomers are provided onboth sides of the nozzle to remove dirt incarpet near baseboards and furniture.Guide side of nozzle parallel to edge ofcarpet or furniture as shown.

3. MaintenanceDirt cup When to empty

How to emptyTurn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.Press the button (B) on the top of thecleaner and pull the dirt cup straight out.Remove dirt cup lid and empty the cup.

Should the dust cup platform flaps (C)become dislodged, refit using the dia-gram on the platform.

Exhaust filterHow to clean Turn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet. The exhaust filter , located behind thegrill on the body of the cleaner, is wash-able. To clean, rotate grill (F) counter-clockwise. Remove the exhaust filter (G).Wash filter by running it under cold tapwater. Do not use soap or detergent. Donot use the small brush to clean thisfilter, as brushing will damage theeffectiveness of the filter. Allow to drythoroughly before replacing on cleaner.

The exhaust filter should be cleaned atleast once a year. The filter may becomediscolored with use, but the filtration effi-ciency will not be affected.

Washing the dirt cup Turn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet.Remove the dirt cup by pressing thebutton on the top of the cleaner andpulling the cup straight out. Remove lid.The cup may be rinsed by running itunder cold tap water and dried with asoft cloth. Do not replace dirt cup oncleaner unless it has been dried thor-oughly. Should the dust cup platformflaps (C) become dislodged, refit usingthe diagram on the platform.

Grasp the filter and rotate counter-clock-wise. Clean the filter using the smallbrush located under the tool lid.If desired, the filter may be rinsed byrunning it under cold tap water. Do notuse soap or detergent. Shake excesswater from filter and allow to dry thor-oughly before replacing it in cleaner.Replace the filter by lining up tabs on fil-ter with grooves on lid and rotatingclockwise.If the Suction Control light continues toflash after the filter has been cleaned,there may be a blockage in the hose orwands. Refer to “If you have a problem”section.

Cleaning the filterThe dirt cup filter (D) is located underthe dirt cup lid. When the filter needs to be cleaned, thered Suction Control Switch light (E) willflash on and off.

Belt replacement The belt in your power nozzle drives theagitator. It has been designed specifical-ly for use in this cleaner and is importantfor effective operation.

What to buyThere are other belts manufactured thatare similar in shape and size, but are notdesigned for the HOOVER power nozzle.Such belts do not operate the agitator cor-rectly and may create stress which coulddamage your power nozzle. Use only agenuine HOOVER Belt part no.40201180 when a belt replacement isnecessary.

When to replace The belt should be checked from time totime to be sure it is in good condition. Tocheck, remove the nozzle cover (see fol-lowing section). Replace the belt if it isstretched, cut, or broken.

How to replace Disconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet and disconnect power nozzlefrom extension wands. To remove hood, turn nozzle over andunscrew the 4 recessed Phillips headscrews.

Note: Do not remove the 3 screws inthe triangle formation as these holdthe motor in place.

Position hood on top of nozzle base.

Turn nozzle over. Replace 2 short screwsat the back of nozzle and 2 long screwsat the front.

Replace brush roll cover (G) over agita-tor brush roll. Replace 3 short screws.

Lift up end of agitator brush roll. Removeold belt from agitator pulley (I) andreplace with new belt. Lettering on beltmust be visible.

If belt is not broken but is stretched orcut, pull it off the motor pulley (H).

Stretch belt back and attach to motorpulley.

Hold opposite end of agitator brush roll inplace. Push belt end forward, rotatingend plate (J) until it slides into place.Turn agitator, making sure it rotates freely.

Lift off brush roll cover (G). Remove brush roll cover (G) by remov-ing the 3 Phillips head screws.

Return nozzle to original position and liftoff hood.

Agitator brush rollreplacementWhen to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.When agitator brush roll brushes areworn, the brush roll should be replaced.

To check condition of brushes, moveedge of a card across bottom plate whileturning brush roll. To maintain cleaningeffectiveness, replace brush roll if brush-es do not touch card.

What to buyWhen purchasing a new agitator brush roll,ask for HOOVER part no. 48414-071.

How to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electrical outlet.

1. Remove hood, duct cover, belt andbrush roll as shown in Figs. 3-8 to 3-13.

2. Discard old brush roll.

3. Replace new brush roll and belt asshown in Figs. 3-13 to 3-15.

Headlight replace-mentThe headlight, located on top of thepower nozzle, operates when the clean-er is turned on. Use only HOOVERpart no. 27317-307 , which is a fusedbulb, when replacing the headlight.

How to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet and disconnect power nozzlefrom extension wands.

1. Remove the hood as shown in Figs.3-8 and 3-9.

2. Push old bulb into socket and twist toremove. Push new bulb into socket andtwist into place.3. Replace hood.

2. Pull off both old edge groomers (K).

3.Push each new groomer onto the 3tabs (L), starting with one of the endtabs. Then push the groomer onto themiddle and remaining end tab.

4. Replace brush roll cover and hood asshown in Figs. 3-14 and 3-15.

Edge groomerreplacementWhen to replaceThe edge groomers, located on bothsides of the nozzle, should be replacedwhen they no longer extend past the sur-face of the bottom plate.

What to buyWhen purchasing edge groomers, ask forHoover part no. 39511004.

How to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.1. Remove hood and brush roll cover asshown in Figs. 3-8 to 3-10.

How to replaceDisconnect cleaner from electricaloutlet.1. Remove tool from hose and turn it sobottom faces up. Press the latches oneither side of tool and remove bottomplate (A).

Thermal protectorAn internal thermal protector has beenused in your cleaner to prevent overheat-ing if a large item or clog gets caught inthe nozzle or at the opening of the bag.

When the blockage is not removed, thethermal protector will trip and thecleaner will stop running.

If this happens, turn cleaner OFF and dis-connect cleaner from electrical outlet.Then disconnect nozzle and removeobstruction. Within 15 minutes, the ther-mal protector will cool and automaticallyreset and cleaning may resume.

If cleaner does not operate, allow addi-tional time for thermal protector to reset.

3. Remove agitator including end plates(C) and discard.4. Inspect belt to ensure that it is ingood condition. If belt is cracked,gouged or broken, replace it (see follow-ing section).5. Insert brush roll through belt andposition belt over gear teeth (D) onbrush roll.

Powered hand toolBelt replacementInspecting the beltThe powered hand tool belt is designedto last a long time and is not normallyreplaced. However, if the belt iscracked, gouged or broken, it should bereplaced.

The belt can be seen through the top ofthe nozzle or by removing the bottomplate and belt guard (Figs. 3-20 and 3-21).

2. Grasp turbine (E) and pull firmly toremove.3. Remove belt from turbine pulley (F).Replace with new belt.

Replacing beltWhen replacing belt, ask for HOOVERpart no. 38528037.

1. Remove bottom plate, belt guard andbrush roll as described in Figs. 3-20through 3-22.

4. With flat sides of turbine retainers (G)pointing down, slide retainers intogrooves (H) on both sides of tool hous-ing and snap into place.5. Replace brush roll, belt guard, andbottom plate as described in Figs. 3-21through 3-24.

4. If you have aproblem

If a minor problem occurs, it usually canbe solved quite easily when the cause isfound by using the check list below.

Clearing blockagesWhen the cleaner senses low suction orpickup, the Suction Control light willflash. Low suction or pick up may bedue to a blockage in the system. Referto the following steps to check for block-ages, continuing with each step until theblockage is found:

1. Turn cleaner off and disconnect fromelectrical outlet; then disconnectpower nozzle plug and wands fromhand grip.

2. Plug cleaner in, turn on, and checkhose end for suction. Remove anyobstructions.

3. Remove power nozzle from wandsand attach wands to hose. Check forsuction and remove any blockages.

Lubrication The motor is equipped with two bear-ings that contain sufficient lubrication forthe life of the motor. The addition oflubricant could cause damage.Therefore, do not add lubricant toeither motor bearing.

The agitator brush roll is equipped withtwo ball bearings that should be lubri-cated periodically by a Hoover FactoryService Center or an authorized HooverWarranty Service Dealer (Depot).

Your HOOVER® appliance is warrantedin normal household use, in accordancewith the Owner’s Manual against originaldefects in material and workmanship fora period of one full year from date ofpurchase. This warranty provides, at nocost to you, all labor and parts to placethis appliance in correct operating con-dition during the warranted period. Thiswarranty applies when the appliance ispurchased in the United States includ-ing its territories and possessions, or inCanada or from a U. S. MilitaryExchange. Appliances purchased else-where are covered by a limited one yearwarranty which covers the cost of partsonly. This warranty does not apply if theappliance is used in a commercial orrental application.

Warranty service can only be obtainedby presenting the appliance to one ofthe following authorized warranty ser-vice outlets. Proof of purchase will berequired before service is rendered.

4. Make sure power nozzle plug is dis-connected from hand grip. Then checkfor blockage in nozzle connector (A).

Push nozzle connector down to lowestposition. Look into nozzle connector andremove any blockage.

5. Disconnect powered hand tool (avail-able at additional cost if not includedwith your cleaner) from hose. Removebottom plate, belt guard and turbine asdescribed in Figs. 3-19, 3-20 and 3-27.Remove any blockage from turbinechannel (B).Replace belt, turbine, brush roll, beltguard and bottom plate.
