Last Nights PlayA large crowd greeted the drama
St Elmo taken from AugustaEvanss famous novel yesterdaymatinee and night
The play as a whore was verygood Mr Twomly as St Elmo after-a great struggle between the goodtrue man and the cynical harsh fel ¬
low finally winning Into the goodgraces of all present
The cast was a good one handlingtheir different characters to good ad-vantage
¬
and the play itself leaving-the taste of Lived long and happyever afterwards in the mouths of allwho saw it was greatly enjoyed
TRUE DRAMABy Olga Nethersole
Either by the mysterious law ofsuggestion or mental telepathic influ ¬
ence dramatists during the past fewmonths have been devoting their en ¬
ergies and abilities to the consttnction of plays dealing with themes thatdemand serious thought and consider ¬
ation with the result that the stagehas been benefited thereby and thepublic quick in placing its approvalupon the same has refuted the manyassaults made derogatory to the mis ¬
sion of the stage and Its place amongthe many agencies of education thatheretofore have been associated sole ¬
ly with the college the lyceum or tnerostrum In the exposition of suchtopics the dramatist has fulfilled adual mission first he expects certainconditions that If consigned withinthe two covers of a book would prob¬
ably never reach tho very class ofpeople that his message Is most ap-plicable
¬
to secondly by writing atheme that demands the employment-of actors who can act and who arenot the mere models esentlal to thedisplay of modistes art thus the stageis benefited very materially for bythis very employment it retards thepractice ot fostering upon the publicplayers who possess more money thantalent or whose chief asset is noto-riety
¬
in tho divorce court or In somebig public scandal I note with pleas-ure
¬
the frequency this season of thecritics mention unknown to Broad-way this confession clearly sustainsfly argument made many times thatthere are a great many excellentplayers who owing to tho scarcity ofparts that demand playing are kepthidden In the vast provincial territory-of America and are never given theopportunity of playing before a metro-politan

audience to show what artisticmaterial they do possess the faultlay more with the dramatist thanwith the manager had the dramatistpaid more attention to the construc ¬
tion of plays based upon themes thanon shapely anatomy the howl frompulpit and public would have beenless scathing Give ho public what-it wants and the result will be suc-cess
¬
and all this bugaboo about themission of the stage being only toamuse is all tommy rot we havethank God a large percentage ofthinking people who go to the theatreto be entertained and if you appeasethat desire whether It be by the expo-sition

for my boldness in disclosing certainphases of life that were nothing but-a truthful reflection of life I havebeen criticised for my selection ofplays that were exposes of social con ¬
ditions which if chronicled in uiedaily press would be hailed as bril ¬
liant journalism I will bo boldenough to state that my contentionyears ago that the stage should ex ¬
pose these evils has been verified andthe Is today wiser and bettorby these very disclosures that drew
I
upon me the critcism oT the prosand the censure of a class of peoplewho could not face the searchlight oftruth but whoare today some of mybest champions Having to an ex¬

Constipation AndAppendicitisT-
he Latter Usually Caused By TheFormer Which In Turn Has ItsOrigin In Intestinal Indigestion
Chronic constipation is a diseasewhich is about as prevalent as dyspep-sia
¬
and indigestion Nearly every onesuffers from it occasionally but thereare millions of people who endure ithabitually and who are accustomed-to resort to the use of laxatives andcathartics daily
Many people seemed to have devel¬oped a perfect mania for taXIng pillsand instead of trying to ascertain thelatent cause of the disease and remov¬
ing it by appropriate treatment theyare content to continue the reckless-use of laxatives aperients drasticcathartics and violent purgatives un-til
¬
finally inflammation of the bowelsoccurs which reaches the appendixand the result Is appendicitis-
In investigating and tracing thecausative factors of constipation andits frequent sequel appendicitis Ithas been noted by physicians that themajority of cases were preceded andaccc mpanied by a longstanding gas ¬
trointestinal IndigestionThe Idea that appendicitis IB brought
oil by foreign bodies such as seedsetc becoming lodged in the appendix-is an exploded theory It is now denritely known that constipation is themost prolific cause of this dread dis-ease
¬
while the constipation Itself Ispreviously induced by intestinal Indi ¬
gestion or amylaceous dyspepsiatheinability to digest starches so therelation between cause and effect isreadily seen and appreciated
The absurdity of attempting to CIreconstipation by the use of physicshould be apparent to every one Lax-ative
¬drugs and powerful purgatives-
will never cure a disease of this sortand those who make frequent or regu ¬
lar use of them will sooner or laterset ui an inflammatory conditou ofthe Imestlnal system-
A person with firstclass digestionwill never be annoyed with chronicconstipation and when this troubledoes pxist instead of slugging thesysem with pills liquid laxativescauJ cathartics etc use a remedywhich will cure the gastrointestinalindigestion and you will find that theconstipation no longer bothers youand with its removal the risk of de ¬
veloping appendicitis will be reduced-to the

¬
they also contain diastasewhich converts starch into sugar antireadily cures amylaceous dyspepsia-and intestinal indigestion-
If you are suffering from dyspepsiaconstipation and in fact indigestion-of any kind dont run the risk of get-ting
