Happy New Year and best wishes for 2016! I hope you
all had a fabulous Christmas and festive period and, I am
sure, like me, you found it a shock to the system waking
up so early on Monday morning. May I take this
opportunity to thank you all for your kind wishes, cards
and gifts at Christmas, they were very much
appreciated.
A warm welcome to the new pupils and families who
started Clifton this term. I know all the children have
settled in well and have enjoyed their first week at
school. As always, I have enjoyed talking to the children
and listened to their experiences of their holidays—it
would certainly seem that they have all had a wonderful
time! The children were very excited on Monday
morning as they arrived at school to find out what their
themes were for their learning this term. The themes
are ‘Adventure’ in Reception, ‘Eat, Sleep, Learn, Repeat’
in Year 1, ‘What, Where, Why and When?’ in Year 2
and ‘How will you make your mark?’ in Year 3. I know
the children are going to have a fascinating term.
The Clifton School Friends have arranged for an
exciting programme of events this term starting with a
Race Night next Saturday—this promises to be great
fun. There is also a meeting arranged at 7.30pm in the
Rayson Room next Thursday to discuss other events
throughout the term— all parents are welcome to
attend and, I know, that you contribution would be
most appreciated.
The Yorkshire Rowers (four fearless parents from
school) set off from the Canary Islands over the
holidays on their epic row across the Atlantic. We all
wish them the very best of luck as they approach the
half way point on their way to Antigua. You can follow
their progress on Twitter @Yorkshire or on the
Talisker website:
https://www.taliskerwhiskyatlanticchallenge.com.
It is not long now until the Year 2 and 3 children sing in
the Young Voices concert at the Sheffield Motorpoint
Arena. The children have been learning the songs and
are looking forward to this amazing opportunity to
perform in a packed arena. Parents should have received
a letter in the Tuesday mailing with specific instructions
and, on the day, up-to-date information will be
communicated via twitter @PhilHardyCPS.
I hope you all have a good weekend.
Best wishes,

After the Christmas holidays, the children in RS found a ‘Forgotten Present’ in their
classroom, wrapped with red paper and a blue bow. Under the box with it was a
large padlocked chest! After a number of suggestions and discussed possibilities
about where this mystery present had come from, and of course, what to do with the
present, it was finally agreed to open it! Some of contents of the present included
binoculars, a rope and cargo net… all things it seemed to go on a mission…! The
present also included a secret message explaining how to unlock the chest! And so
our mystery adventure had begun…!
This week in Nursery we have been using our inventive
imaginations. We have been
making use of some very large boxes that the Year 3
furniture was delivered in. They have become army
camouflage dens with opening and closing drawbridges, a
giant Gruffalo painted with
berry juice for paint, imitation cave art, a crocodile lying on
his back, a pirate ship and a horse which the children
even had a ride around
Nursery on. Over in the construction area some of
the children created a crane with a bucket and pulley
inspired by one of their Christmas
presents. Wow,
what a creative lot you are!
On Monday, Year 1 had a surprise visitor. Jenny, a first aider, came to talk to us about looking after our bodies. She explained how and why we should keep healthy, especially after an indulgent Christmas! This has kick started our new topic “Eat, Sleep, Learn, Repeat” brilliantly. We look forward to updating Jenny on what have learnt throughout this term and hope we make
her proud.
Exiting the School
During the dark mornings and evenings, we wish to remind all
drivers exiting the campus and turning on to the A19 to drive
with care and consideration, and to be aware of pedestrians
crossing.

2S have had a very exciting start to the
term. They have been delighted to
welcome Emily, who has just moved to
York and joined the class. She has
fitted in so well and everyone has been
very keen to help her and answer
questions for her. The new class
furniture has begun to arrive, looking
very bright and cheerful. Last, but not least, the topic
of ‘What, Where, Why and When?’ was literally
launched, with the first week’s work being based on
Tim Peake’s exciting space mission, Principia.
We had a
great time starting our new topic -
Make Your Mark – by making our
mark on 3L’s classroom! We even
used dry chalk pens to paint the
windows!
have thrown themselves into their
new theme, called ‘What, Where, Why
and When…?’ We have been finding out
all about Tim Peake and his mission on
the International Space Station. We have
measured each other for spacesuits and
we are now busy turning ourselves into
full sized astronauts, complete with gold
have been interviewing each other this week to write mini biographies.
Happy New Year!
Hopefully you have had a smooth if slightly soggy return to school this week.
Next Saturday is our first parent social of the term Clifton School Friends Race Night which promises to be an exciting fun night and a great fundraiser for the schools chosen charity Walking with the wounded. We have sold over 65 tickets so have changed the venue to the Memorial Hall at St Peters, the dress code is “Going to the Races” to add a bit of creative challenge to the night anything goes as long as its race/horse related. There will be lots of opportunity to win some fantastic prizes with our Tombola as well as a Highest winnings and Best Dressed prize.
Thursday 14th January 7.30pm is our Clifton School Friends meeting in the Rayson room. Everyone is welcome please come along to hear about all the exciting activities and events we are planning for this term, how you can get involved and share any thoughts, feedback and ideas with us. We are trialling this evening slot to allow different parents/carers the opportunity to attend.
If the Christmas holidays provided an opportunity for a sort out there is a “Bags to School” collection on Wednesday 20th January. The bags will be sent home in the book bags next week with further details of what you can and can’t put in.
Finally with a New Year started we would welcome any new ideas and members—just grab myself or Elizabeth to have a chat.

We have begun our first adventure after opening the mystery parcel that appeared in our classroom. After finding a large bunch of keys inside, the children thought they may belong to a policeman.... so we now have a police station with an office, a jail, and a police car. The children have worked together to create the props they need, cleverly using the tools to cut up a long tube to make handcuffs. As the week has progressed, the police-children have followed footprints to catch a burglar, looked closely at fingerprints and written crime
reports!

We have had such an exciting start to the term for our new topic ‘Make your Mark’! On Monday morning, 3R came into the classroom to the surprise of being able to draw on the walls, we all got
very excited about this! There was also a mystery box at the front of the classroom encased in a lock. We spent some time thinking about what could be inside and why it had ‘VIP’ written on the front. Eventually we solved the code and opened the box, only to find pictures of people inside, including Mr Hardy, Mr Falconer and Mr Winkley! We realised that all the people in the box were leaders, people who have all made their mark in some way. We have started to learn about these people and have been reading their biographies to understand what it takes to make a good leader and how we can make our mark. We have also been making some marks in rt! We have read the book ‘The Dot’ to inspire us and created some fantastic pieces already. We can’t wait to carry on the rest of the topic!
It was great to see everyone back at Playgroup this week and we were delighted to see some new faces. As we don’t have any snow, so this week in Playgroup we decided to make snowmen! They look FAB!
With Mrs Hayden our music teacher we sang “Shake, shake, shake your eggs” which went down a treat and everyone was amazing at keeping with the beat to the music. Well done and see you all next week.

Mr Darwin’s Tree
At 7.00 pm on Thursday 28 January we will welcome Andrew Harrison who will perform Mr Darwin's Tree.
The one man show was commissioned in 2009 for the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth and premiered in Westminster Abbey.
This compelling 75 minute performance focuses on the relationship between Darwin (an agnostic) and his wife Emma (a Christian) and touches on issues around science, faith, love and human destiny.
All of the Third Form pupils at St Peter’s will see a matinee production of the
performance on Thursday afternoon with tickets for the evening
performance being available here:

The production comes highly recommended with Murray Watts (the play’s
author) being a founding member of both Upstream Theatre and Riding
Lights Theatre Co.
