IB LEARNER PROFILE OF THE MONTH

“BALANCED”

The IB Learner Profile focus for this month is ‘Balanced’ – IB

learners "understand the importance of intellectual, physical and

emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for them-

selves and others." At CIS we encourage our students to main-

tain a sense of balance in everything that they do. We offer a wide-range of extra-

curricular activities which help our students to explore success outside of the aca-

demic field and thrive in different environments. Our students are active partici-

pants in swimming, football, basketball, volleyball, track and a variety of other

sports; they are enthusiastic performers, providing us with plays and concerts

throughout the year; they are captivating speakers, engaging in assemblies, de-

bate competitions and international Model UN conferences; and they never cease

to impress us with their seemingly endless list of talents which extend far beyond

the academic realm. All too often students lose a sense of balance as they pro-

gress through school, and at CIS we work hard to ensure that our students are

able to maintain their balance and develop as happy, healthy, and productive

learners. As Euripides wrote: “The best and safest thing is to keep a balance in

your life, acknowledge the great powers around us and in us. If you can do that,

Self-Control Self-control refers to hav-

ing power or control over one’s own actions. Students

without self-control may rely on others to make decisions, go along

with others and not take responsibility for their own actions. When children possess

the skill of self-control, they are more likely to stop and consider others’ points of views and to

accept others’ differences before they act. It is important to select reasonable goals when teaching

self-control. It is best to select one goal at a time. It may be sharing, accepting ‘no’, complying with rules, or dealing ap-

propriately with anger. Some strategies for teaching self-control include: Take a break – encourage children to take a break when they

are feeling angry or upset Teach paying attention – encourage children to observe when

others are talking. This may reduce interruptions. Use appropriate reinforcements – provide consistent, positive

feedback for desired behaviors Use specific activities to teach self-regulation – these can be

role-played or modeled. Practice!

Dear Parents, Please be reminded that all parents should be registered in the office if on campus outside of arrival and dismissal times. Teachers must inform the office staff if they are expecting volunteers in the classroom, and when you sign in, you will be given a visitor’s tag. If the office staff have not received any notification from the teacher regarding your visit, then you will be asked to remain in the office. Should your child forget his/her lunch, homework, PE clothes, swim clothes, etc., please drop these in the office as per the school guide-lines. However, it is hoped that this will be the exception rather than the norm, as students learn to be more responsible for their school belongings. Let’s all work together to continue to follow these school guide-lines. Thank you for your support. Kind regards, The Administration Team

FIRST ANNUAL CIS SERVICE DAY

Dear Business Owner: Make a difference in the lives of students and families in our school—support the 2013-2014 Cayman International School Yearbook! For the past 10 years, our school has produced a yearbook to preserve school memories for students and their families. The yearbook is a strong tradition in our school and we strive to deliver the best possible yearbook for our students every year. To help us create a high-quality yearbook at a price that all families can afford, we count on the support of local businesses through advertising. Are you a local business owner? Or do you know a local business owner who would benefit from a yearbook ad? We would appreciate your support! Advertising in the Cayman International School yearbook provides an excel-lent opportunity for you to get the word out about your business. The most important reason to advertise in the yearbook is to send a strong message to other area families that you support our school. Additional benefits in-clude: Increased exposure—Students and their families look over their year-

books repeatedly over the years, so your ad will be seen time and time again!

Targeted audience—Advertising in the yearbook is targeted directly to young people and their families.

Value—The yearbook ad is a great value. Price information for various sizes and types of yearbook ads is expressed below. Compare these to a one-week ad in the newspaper or a radio spot. What a bargain!

Please email [email protected] today to talk about the advertis-ing options available. We are certain you will find the perfect way to adver-tise your business while helping support your student’s yearbook. Sincerely, Katie Kimbro Full Page Advertisement= 500CI; Half Page Advertisement= 250CI

What is your background and heritage?

I am from 2 main countries, I am Jamaican and English.

Which countries have you lived in?

I have only lived in Grand Cayman but I have visited many other countries.

How long have you been living in the Cayman Islands?

I have been living in the Cayman Islands for my whole life.

How many years have you been at CIS?

I have been at CIS for about 9 years.

Describe yourself. (At least a few of your best and worst personality traits)

I am a shy guy who loves and hates exercise, I am pretty intelligent but I can only put hard work into things that don’t bore me and I

love to play and to make video games. My best personality traits are my determination when I get my mind set on something (My

friends say it is my stubbornness), and I guess my protective nature even though I have never had to use it. My worst traits are my

shyness for sure and my inability to put effort into things that bore me (laziness).

Other than schoolwork and studying, what activities do you enjoy?

Other than school work and studying, because you know I love that, I enjoy sports such as Boxing, Swimming, Football, and Tennis.

I also enjoy playing video games very much.

Describe a time when you wanted to quit, but didn't.

During the football tournament I almost broke my toe and wanted not to play the next game, but Dusan and Thomas said I should

keep playing, I thought about it and decided to play because the adrenaline would stop the pain while I was playing.

Describe your most cherished childhood memory? What were you like as a kid?

My favorite childhood memory would have to be one Christmas when pretty much my entire family was together for Christmas. As

a kid I was fun but pretty defiant at times. My aunt told me one story of when I was small (about 7 or 8), she was wrapping gifts on

the floor and as I walked past her I walked on the wrapping paper. She got a bit annoyed and said “No Jonathan don’t do that, walk

around.” So in response I stared her in the face as I walked back over it a second time.

What is one quality you admire most in others?

I admire the ability of others to work so hard in school.

What is your dream job/career? Why?

My dream job is to be a video game designer, I chose this because I have played video games where I was just stunned by the beau-

ty of the scenery and the quality of the game and I want to give people the same feeling when they play my games. Video games

are like getting to have a second life full of other friends and different problems, I mostly enjoy games where I get to travel the

world exploring and seeing the amazing things it has to offer with a group of friends.

CIS High School Student Internship Week May 26th-30th

There are many reasons why internships are valuable experiences for high school students. Internships are a great way to begin exploring career options and finding those jobs that may be of interest when pursuing jobs in the future. Many students begin college with no idea of what career they may want to pursue, but by completing an internship they begin to get acquainted early with some of the career opportunities that are available. Many times students identify early what careers they don’t want to do and that information can be just as valuable when learning about career options. Completing an internship as a high school student helps students decide what courses they may like to take when they begin college. High school students will begin to develop the confidence and skills they will need when applying for opportunities in the future. This experience will make it easier when applying because students will have a comprehension of some of the skills that are needed for various occupations, and will have some understanding of the workplace environment.

High School students who do not attend a High School trip and are on island during these dates will be participating in Student Internship Week. The Learning Objectives for Internship Week are as follows:

1) Investigate fields of interest related to the students’ career and college goals 2) Increase their understanding of skills and attributes required to respond to the demands of and

be successful in the 21st century workforce and economy 3) Help students build an understanding of themselves as lifelong learners and apply this to their

future schooling and careers 4) Help students gain a greater understand of their own interests and abilities as they relate to the

world of work Requirements for Internship Week are as follows:

1) Students must contact a local business and arrange for an internship for the week of May 26th-30th. When students contact businesses they need to provide them with their CV and Internship request letter from CIS.

2) Students must contact businesses by Friday, April 18th. 3) Students need to conference with Ms. Katie if they have not secured an internship by Friday,

May 2nd, and assistance will be provided. 4) Students will attend their internship during the week of May 26th-30th. Students will not have

regularly scheduled classes at CIS during that week. 5) Students must complete and fill out the CIS Student Internship Reflection Form and turn it into

Ms. Katie by Friday, June 6th. Students are required to fully complete this form and have their Internship Supervisor sign and complete the evaluation section of the form.
