Back in the Povich-Springer- Lake days,I watched Oprah. During one taping withthe self-help- guru-herself, there was a sin-gle mother and her kids (4 or 5 of them, allyoung adults). There was a great vacationgive-away (surprise surprise) and all thosekids got together to send in a video abouttheirmom- who-never-complained-in-all-the-years-that-she-was-a-single-parent.Wow, are you serious? I watched that

and thought, “I can’t top that!” I’d neverbe able to make it a year, possibly a month(okay a week) without a gripe about some-thing. I mean I’ve spent a lot of energy onhaving a positive outlook on life and it’spaid off, but I’m also human. Um, and doyou knowme? I’m a bit high strung some-times and I have the worst luck. Worst. Sosometimes it’s just tough. So, after that Oprah episode, I totally be-

gan to think I was the worst mother in theworld. I wasn’t anything like that mother. Iwasn’t perfect, and nor would I ever be ableto compare! I mean, Sheesh, I was alwaysworking, always struggling, always trippingover something in my house (probablymy own clutter) and I was always in somefictitiousWorldWar III that my ex wouldextravagantly try to create between us.Thatday I said to myself, “Wow, I couldn’t win a‘You’re the Best Mom’ Award if I tried”…and all I wanted to be, was the best mom inthe whole world. But, as the saying goes, and I’d come to

realize, you don’t always have to listen toeverything you tell yourself (that may havecome from a self-help book I read in thelate nineties by Shad Helmstetter, greatbook you should read it). Here we are coming up onMother’s Day.

It’s the day we traditionally celebrate thatspecial person (mom or dad, aunt, uncle, grandparent or friend in some cases) whohelped us become who we are. This pastyear I’ve become aware just howmuch I’vealways been loved and respected by mythree children. Unbeknownst to me, I amthat person.Silly me. When I look around, I realize

it’s always been there, I just haven’t givenmyself credit for it. My friends do, my fam-

ily does. But have I? I should have seen ityears ago, when my daughter wrote me atage eight a note about how her mommywas better than all the rest. Or when I wason my second divorce felling depressed anddefeated, she would step into my bedroomat thirteen years old and secretly leave acandy bar and a hand-written note tellingme how amazingly gorgeous, sophisticated, intelligent and awesome I was.The divorcescrushed me to the very core. We’d beenthrough so much and my ex slandered myvery intentions and character. We werebroke often, I worked a lot, we couldn’thave or do what other families were doing, but even after all that and more…I couldn’tsee that they still loved me.Today, many years later, we celebrate

year three of being in our new home. We’vehad many incredible times and I can tellyou now, that none of that stuffmade a dif-ference; not the things we missed, couldn’tbuy, even the hardships. It only made ourfamily dynamics matter more. I see nowthat they loved me and still do.They sawtenacity, they saw hard work, they wit-nessed me not giving up EVER. All thesame reasons why I love, respect and honormy father so much. They saw that in theirown mother.Through everything, I’ve stayed close to

my kids. I have loved them the same waythrough it all, and I never stopped beingthe mom they’d always known…the rock, the loving friend, confidant and cheer-leader. No matter who, or what, was in ourlives (or wasn’t) they know they could al-ways count on me to be there. They clearlynever gave up on me either, and for that, Iam grateful and that is why I keep trying.Keep going. My dad was my inspirationwhen I was a kid; for the last 20 years it’sbeen my children. Parents can’t ever stoptrying, because their kids love them and itwill take a lot for them not to. It’s when wequit, that they will.I’ve never had much money or been able

to provide lavish gifts or vacations, but I’vegiven them what I have. Time; one on onetalks, family dinners together at home,

PERFECTION FROM PAGE 4initiation of conversations aboutpast things they’ve talked aboutor expressed interest in doing, volunteering at school, attendingplays, sporting events and awardsceremonies (taxiing them toevents and social engagements).Taking an interest in them andhelping them through their ownproblems was what has mattered, not our daily circumstances.Gaining a child’s love is not

a gift, potion, or magic trick ofmanipulation; it’s called wholehearted investment (in them, intheir future, their now, their ev-erything). So those of you want-ing to get your kids closer to youand feel their love, here it is…be genuine. Work hard. Don’t lieto them, because they can tell. Help themget to their dreams (ask them what theirdreams are). Listen to them (every time).Do NOT talk about their other parentnegatively (that’s THE first nail in the coffineven if your kids are little). My kids trustme. They don’t hate my guts and haven’ttrashed my house when I’m not home(wink-wink, because I don’t know every-thing, right? There was this one time whenthey washed the couch cushion while I wasaway and wouldn’t tell me why lol). I’vehad the joy of never being told I’m hated ina fit of rage even though I have taken cellphone after cell phone away and groundedkids (ask my middle) for about a week at atime minimum. I spanked. I used sarcasm.Somehow, they still love me! For those ofyou worried someone can take your child’slove away from you, they can’t…not with-out your permission.Sometimes we don’t see our children’s

love for us when they’re young. It’s there, but we might not know it is. Sure, theymake us art projects, ask us to attendshows, they want to sit in our lap and sweettalk us when they’re little. But even withthat, we might not feel appreciated or caredabout because our kids are used to worry-ing about themselves, and that’s okay. Asthey get older though, they begin to realizemore and more what you’ve done for themand they appreciate it.They even learn howto show their appreciation back (howeverthat might be). Regardless, they love you, because they have felt love.I don’t usually get gifts onMother’s Day,

the kids just wait to go along with my planof family gardening (last year we built myrose garden), sometimes it’s a new activity,a hike or eating out…just as long as they’re

with me.That’s the best gift to me.Theydon’t need to get me anything, but they aregetting to that age…and tell you the truthit’s kind of cool. This Christmas I got oneof the coolest things ever frommy kids, well a few cool things, but this one flooredme, not only because it was short for abad word I have been known to use albeitless now less than in the past, but becauseit was also the first time I watched themall go in together and ‘say it with a gift’. Itwas a ‘Best EFFINMom’ mug. Judge me- Imean a lot of people do- but I take this giftas a high honor. Some of my other favoritegifts were an NFL Saints t-shirt (way to goboy), a couple of journals and a Starbucksgift card. They’ve never had that opportunity to

giftme. The gifts they wrapped up for mecame with many smiles, giggles, and “Re-member when, mom?”, but they don’t real-ize that’s the pay off, the smallest but mostspecial signs of love. To them now, this isthe fun part…paying attention to whatI like and who I am. Picking out music Ilike to listen to or doing the dishes before Iarrive home from work, prepping the fire-place kindling for me to arrive home andmake a nice fire on a cold winter evening.I’m on Oprah every day getting the biggestaward. We all know a parent who isn’t perfect,

but who is amazing still. This Mother’sDay send them a note, a card, text or callthem. Maybe consider getting them a mug,so that everyday they can pick that mugup and go, “DAMN I NAILED IT…eventhough I thought I failed it”.Visit our brand new amazing website:

by Carole RichardsRecently I met

with a delightfulsmart and insight-ful ten-year-oldfifth-grade girl. Shespoke lovingly aboutspending time withher family. She wasa happy child. Hermother brought her

to see me because the parents thought shehad dyslexia. The girl described school asdifficult and reading was hard. However, when I tested her, she was able to readand comprehend 7th grade level as easilyas she read a 5th grade passage. When Istarted asking her the questions on the7th grade passage, she started to lose herconfidence and missed three questions ina row. I told her she was reading at the 7thgrade level and she answered five of thenext six questions correctly. This girl toldme she says “I can’t a lot.”The parents seem to be positive. The girl

is smart and capable yet she doesn’t see itin herself. As parents, we need to reinforcewith our children, the “I CAN” attitudeeven when things get difficult. The “I CAN” attitude is even more

important for children with disabilities.I hear parents making excuses for theirchildren. One parent told me her daughterwould throw herself down the stairs if shehad to return to a social group. Anotherparent told me her son was traumatizedbecause a tutor raised their voice.Thisparticular tutor is one of the kindestgentlemen I’ve ever known. These childrenmanipulated their parents. The parents

The “I CAN” Kidgave in to their child’s demands insteadof pushing their child through the dif-ficult situation and learning “I CAN”.Resilience is a learned skill. Some

people have more innate “I CAN”in them but children can learn fromfailure, difficult situations and people.Perhaps your New Year’s resolution canbe to nurture your child’s ability to learnfrom failure. Push them when they fail, stumble or are afraid. Teach your childthat mistakes are good because we learnfrom them.I have always enjoyed challenges. I’m

not afraid to try new things … I’m notafraid of failure. My childhood wasn’tidyllic, but my parents nurtured my “ICAN” attitude. I started my first busi-ness at thirteen with my parents sup-port. At sixteen, I was allowed to workat a resort away from home for the sum-mer without my parents. At twenty, myparents permitted me to live in Hawaiifor the summer alone. My son collectedautographs and at thirteen he wanted togo to the Cleveland stadium by pub-lic transportation. I helped him learnhow to do it. At eighteen, he drove toNebraska from Cleveland alone to visitteens he had met in France the previoussummer on a school trip.Don’t rescue your child at the first

sign of failure or fear. Teach them tobe an “I CAN” kid. This is perhaps thebest gift you can ever give your child.Carole Richards is president of North

Coast Tutoring Services, author of Rich-ards Learning Systems and a frequentguest on radio and TV. She can bereached at [email protected].
