April Edition

Conrad’s Corner

My Actions,

My Responsibility

For your tween to take personal responsibility, it’s important that he/she

take ownership of his/her actions. Help your middle schooler learn this

valuable lesson with the following tips for handling common excuses.

Admit Mistakes: It's typical for kids this age to immediately deny wrong

doing. (“Who left the front door open?” “Well, I didn't!”) The reason is to keep

from getting into trouble and to possibly protect their pride. Your middle

schooler will be more willing to admit mistakes if you don’t overreact when

he/she does confess. Instead, use a neutral tone and give a gentle reminder for

the minor offenses. (“Let’s all try to keep the front door closed when the air is

on.”)

Avoid Excuses: Does your tween have an excuse for everything? Maybe he

didn’t get a permission slip signed and says, “You weren't home when I had it

out.” Make it clear it’s their responsibility to find a way to get things taken care

of. Discuss what they could have done, such as leaving the form on the kitchen

counter with a note or putting a reminder in their phone to get it signed.

Accept Blame: If your child is in the hot seat, he/she may be quick to blame

others. Maybe they didn't perform well on an assessment and he/she says

their friend kept goofing off during study time. Take time to explain that

blaming others doesn’t solve the problem and that preparing for the test was

up to them, not anyone else. Brainstorm what your child can do next time

(study alone, move from the distraction, use a checklist to stay on track, etc.) -Middle Years

Way to go Mabank Archery!! We are so very proud! Last week they competed in the NASP 80cm Bullseye Tournament and took 4 teams

(1 elementary, 2 middle school and 1 high school). The HS team finished 9th in state out of 47 teams. The elementary team finished 5th in state out of 19 teams and shot the highest score a Mabank elementary team has ever shot at state. In doing so, they also qualified for Nationals in

May! The middle school #2 team finished 21st out of 39 teams but our middle school #1 team really showed out. They finished #3 in the state and also shot the highest score they have ever shot at state. They too

qualified for Nationals in May!! Gaven Parker finished 2nd and Gavin Van Horn finished 3rd. There were numerous other students who shot their

personal best scores and are ranked top 3 in their grade level in the state. At the IBO/NASP State Championship, Gaven Parker won 1st place, Gavin Van Horn won 2nd place, Makena Parker won 3rd place, and Katie Preston won 4th place. They are VERY proud to announce that the 2018
