The basics:Sometimes called the Black Death, the Plague, or the Bubonic Plague
I’m super infected with a deadly virus!
Now we are too!
FLEA BITES RAT
FLEA BITES MAN
Dern thing was hiding in
my moustache!
MAN DIES
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
CAUSES: Overpopulationo Europeans were
farming all of the land that they could
o Populations grew out of control
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
CAUSES: Unsanitary Conditions
A lot of filthy people create a lot of trash… what’s attracted to giant piles of
trash laying around in cities?
RATS & FLEAS carried the plague and inflected people when they were bitten
I’m going to kill you!
o People rarely bathedo There was no public
sanitationo Populations cramped
tightly into cities
Don’t mind me, just
pouring my poop out on the street.
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
…and you thought it was unsanitary BEFORE!
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
So, how’d it get to Europe?
Notice how it follows right along these trade routes?
Each one of the dots and lines is showing a plague outbreak
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
CAUSES: The Crusadeso The disease travels with merchants along
trade routes from China to Europeo Soldiers fighting in the Crusades brought the
disease back with them
Sure, it’ll kill a few million people, but
just look at this imported silk rug!
Any ideas on why Poland dodged the plague bullet?
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
Solutions?
Europe during the Middle Ages isn’t a place of “learning” and most things get
explained through
superstition…
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
Problem: Solution:You’re sick – what
do you do?You go to the doctor!
I see… the problem appears to be that you have no skin!
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
oDoctors who worked specifically with the plagueoHired by cities to
handle the huge number of sick citizensoVERY WELL PAID
SOLUTION: Plague Doctors
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
SOLUTION: Plague DoctorsSo, what top secret methods did these guys use that
made them so awesome and valuable?
I’ll have to use
science!
Ciao Ezio, I’ve got fresh caught
leeches today!
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
They would lance the buboes and try to
“bleed out” the disease from their patients -(their idea being that
disease was caused by “bad blood” and that
the only way to cure the patient was to get rid of
the blood)
SOLUTION: Plague Doctors
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
And what about the nose?o It held scented
oils and spices that were believed to “purify” the air
o It also cut the odor of working with all of those diseased and dying people
You mean it does
something besides look awesome?
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
What’s happening here?
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
SOLUTION: Blaming (and burning) Jewso Death rates in the Jewish population were
lowero Jews were blamed for spreading the plague
by poisoning water supplies
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
oSome confessed after being tortured and then the entire Jewish population of the city was burned alive
SOLUTION: Blaming (and burning) Jews
This is a perfect example of why torture doesn’t work!
The Black Plague:________________________________________________________
oPeople who believed that the plague was sent as punishment by God
oWhipped themselves to suffer for humankind to try to rid the world of the plague
SOLUTION: Flagellants
