ECONOMIC GARDENING
By recognizing that second-stage companies are the engine behind job creation and revenue generation, Economic Gardening provides a unique and powerful way to grow economies. It targets companies that already operate in communities and helps these growth-oriented businesses succeed by delivering high-level strategic research services.
With the generous sponsorships by Battelle and Gesa, several local companies were accepted into the program during 2017. Vivid Learning Systems, Wildland Labs and Ice Harbor Brewing completed the Economic Gardening program in 2017, and i3Global is nearing the end of their session. In December, Paintmaster was selected for the program.
We want to sincerely thank Battelle and Gesa for their sponsorships of these businesses in 2017 and wish the businesses much success with implementation of the new strategies presented to them.

UPDATEDIVERSITY & INCLUSION
The Tri-Cities has been one of the fastest growing regions in the state in terms of population for the past 15 years. The trend is projected to continue at least through 2021 according to economicmodeling.com. This population growth places the Tri-Cities in an advantageous position over most of the country and other rich nations. Dr. Joseph F. Coughlin, Director of MIT’s AgeLab, writes that “by 2030, more than 20 percent of the U.S. population will be age 65 or older, a demographic breakdown slightly older than that of today’s Florida.” He predicts that the combination of en masse retirement by baby boomers, the drop in global birthrates (including the U.S.), and the improving economies of countries that historically supply us with part of our workforce, will result in labor shortages.
As of 2016, Franklin County’s population increased by 8.5% since 2011, growing by 7,035. Population is expected to increase by 7.8% between 2016 and 2021, adding 6,990.
As of 2016, Benton County’s population increased by 7.3% since 2011, growing by 13,169. Population is expected to increase by 6.0% between 2016 and 2021, adding 11,613.
