It arrived on July 24th and left on July 27th! But that’s the Far Northwest. I wouldn’t live anywhere else. Our official rendezvous cruise schedule is finished, and I really want to thank our Rear Commodore, Brian Krantz, for putting together a terrific list of destinations. But as we all know there is plenty of good cruising weather still to be had in 2016 for those impromptu excursions. Our next event will be on October 19th, our General Membership Meeting at the Islander. It will be a deliciously presented catered dinner hosted by Rob McNeil and Arlene Sund. The presentation will be “Cruising Through the Apocalypse” given by Tom Patty. Please be sure you fill our the special form (previously emailed 9/22/16 to you by Paul Henriksen) with your dinner choices and send it along with your check to the LIYC P O Box 22 by October 12 so the Islander will know how many to expect. It should be a really fun evening. Remember, the social hour starts at 6:00 and dinner will be at 7:00. I also want to thank Paul Henriksen for covering for me at the last General Membership Meeting. I was taking Barbara to the airport on her way to her Norwegian cruise. I’m sure when she returns in 3 weeks, her photos and memories will make a great presentation for next year. I understand that Lauren Stephen’s presentation “Groundings” was full of fun and humor. I’m sorry I missed it. Our boat A Capella would have fit right in. Lane Your most humble Commodore

NEW MEMBER APPLICATION: John Strathman has applied for membership in the

Lopez Island Yacht Club. John and his wife (now deceased) have had a home on Lopez for 15 years. He spends summers on Lopez and winters in Colorado Springs. John has had a Capri 22 which he kept at Lake Pueblo in Colorado for 10 years and sailed it also here in the San Juans. He’s also had a Buccaneer. For the last 10 years, he has been sailing a C&C 30 which is moored in Shoal Bay. Most of his sailing in the North-west is done locally with trips into the Canadian waters—

the most significant was a 25 day circumnavigation of Vancouver Island a few years ago. John enjoys the fun and challenges of sailing these waters and looks forward to meeting and cruising with LIYC.

ENSURING A SMOOTH SALE

Fall is here. Some of you are winterizing your boats. Some may even be thinking about selling your boat or buying a new one. To ensure that your sale goes smoothly, two documents are important to complete: A Purchase Agreement and a Bill of Sale. A Purchase Agreement is necessary if you require certain things must be done before you will accept the boat, such as a satisfactory marine survey, specific repairs, and the ability to finance or insure the boat. It should also describe both parties’ obligations. Once the buyer accepts the boat, the Bill of Sale is used as proof of purchase. BoatUS now offers both of these documents at no cost online. You can download and print them from the BoatUS web site. The BoatUS Consumer Protection Bureau also offers a dispute mediation service, the only national boating complaint database, and also provides consumer-oriented information to help boaters make smart buying decisions. For more information, go to BoatUS.com/consumer.

WE WERE SADDENED TO LEARN that

former LIYC member Gordon Cervo passed away in September. Gordon was an active member of Lopez Island Yacht Club before moving to Arizona a few years ago. Gordon served as LIYC’s 13th Commodore in 1998. Our sympathy goes to Gordon’s many friends and family.

The largest fleet of competitors to date — total of 13 boats — marked this year’s Lopez Cup on September 3. The race results are as follows:

WEATHER THREATENED OUR SEPTEMBER CRUISES Weather played a big factor in limiting the number of LIYC cruisers for the last two scheduled cruises of the year. The weather forecast (rain) for Saturday, September 17, kept most members away from the annual SPAM Carving weekend at Prevost Harbor, Stuart Island. But two hardy vessels and crew still had a good time: Hosts Sam and Gayl Beller on Kinship and Dave McRoberts and guest Alan on Sterling Pacific

Weather again (this time wind) made for an uncomfortable crossing to Victoria on September 23 (and 24). But the 4 boat crews who made it settled in nicely in front

of the Empress Hotel in Victoria Harbour. Lisa Cram of Scram, Duane Bordvick on Gypsy,

Judy and Dave Welker, (Antares), and Bonnie and Phil Henault (Been There) relax at social hour. The LIYC members were joined by visiting royalty Prince William and Princess Kate (shown on a big screen near the harbor.) Doug Cram was happy to report the dreaded Straits were a piece of cake on the Sunday return to Lopez. Photos by Doug Cram
