1 S t Luke’s Hospital (SLH) is one of five community hospitals and charities providing rehabilitation and nursing care to subsidised and private patients. SLH aims to help patients regain as much function as possible through rehabilitative therapy so that they can return home and live independently. During their stay with us, our therapists teach some to walk again; others, to bathe on their own, to feed themselves, to be able to speak to their loves ones again. On average, patients spend about 30 days being cared for and receiving therapy before discharge. The hospital also provides nursing care to manage chronic wounds. Pressure and leg ulcers constitute two of the largest categories of chronic wounds. In addition, post-operative nursing care for stoma patients is another essential aspect of the rehabilitation process. Equipped with a Day Rehabilitation Centre, patients can continue therapy after discharge. Regular therapy helps speeds up the rate of improvement, as we have seen in so many of our patients. Our therapists carefully monitor each individual’s progress in a tailored programme to help them recover. The hospital also educates caregivers on how to help patients. Caregiver training is important to ensure that patients and family members can cope at home. For example, family members can learn practical skills such as helping their loved ones get in and out of taxis. To serve more patients, a new wing is being built to increase the number of beds from 185 to 233 next year – these are 48 sub-acute beds that will be equipped to provide the healthcare that this growing category of patients requires. Last year alone, the hospital received an all-time high of 1,918 patients. It will need to raise $3 million to continue subsidising needy patients and an additional $3 million for the building of the new wing.

St Luke’s Hospital (SLH) is one of five community hospitals and charities providing rehabilitation and nursing care to subsidised and private

patients.

Regular therapy

helps speeds up the rate of improvement, as we have seen in so many of our patients.
