sCenes & songs
Scene 1-Opening Number: Rose is happy. Rose puts on some headphones as she gets ready for school, enjoying the song, “Good Morning Baltimore.”
“Good Morning Baltimore”, from Hairspray
Performed by Halie Oldham, Macy Peterson, and Scarlett Hall
Scene 2: Sawyer’s hand slams the alarm clock. Sawyer’s dad, David, walk in and tells him to get to work as a distance learner despite Sawyer’s bad mood about online school. Sawyer needs to make a pie for FACS class. Rose on the other hand, is excited to still have school because nothing is going to “Rain on her Parade”.
“Don’t Rain On My Parade”, from Funny Girl; Performed by Mila Howells
Scene 3: While Rose is working on distance learning homework, Sawyer walks in with his brother Jack. He has a slice of pie ready for FACS class to taste test, but it is awful. He throws it in the garbage bin, but Jack throws it everywhere. He is not liking online school! Sawyer sees Rose’s optimistic post on Instagram, and doesn’t understand! He mentions he dreams about LA, far from Utah.
“Some People”, from Gypsy; Performed by Andrew Hammer
Scene 4: Rose is in front of her chromebook finishing the last of her health assignments. Her sisters come in and mentions her history assignment. She starts a daydream about her 1950s history assignment. The daydream is the Grease Medley.
“Grease is the Word”, from Grease; Performed by Landon Jakob
“Grease Medley” from Grease; Performed by Grease Cast
Scene 5: Sawyer remains dancing to Grease without music (because the ensemble/dancers left) when Ashley and Barry walk in. They laugh with Sawyer! Sawyer stops and realizes he is not focusing. Sawyer figures out that Rose will tutor him today and he finds himself upset that he needs a tutor. School is hard for him. His best friends named Ashley and Barry come in and teach him a thing or two. Ashley is a character that should try to help Sawyer relax and enjoy life by singing the song, “Dancing Through Life”.
“Dancing Through Life”, from Wicked; Performed by Hannah Greener
Scene 6: David, Sawyer’s dad, walks in. He doesn’t want Sawyer’s friends at the house. He prefers a video call due to the pandemic. Sawyer has a hard time choosing his history project. Sawyer’s dad suggests the time period for his history project to be the 1980s. Sawyer starts to daydream and “Footloose” comes on.
“Footloose”, from Footloose
(Yes, it was adapted into a musical from the movie!!)
Scene 7: Rose is excited that she also has friends coming over! Her friend Lily is in a horrible mood. She explains that this is all pointless. Rose, Lily, and another friend named Christine who is also there, try to work on science. Rose, being smart, explains the universe/solar system facts, but Lily is frustrated that she doesn’t understand. In turn, she blames the coronovirus for learning from home making school more difficult.
“No Reason”, from Beetlejuice
Performed by Jillian Sagers, Mila Howells, and Trinity Roberts
Scene 8: Rose says goodbye to her friends and prepares a Zoom call with Sawyer. Sawyer and Rose try to finish their math work over a Zoom call.
“Stupid with Love”, from Mean Girls
Performed by Andrew Hammer and Mila Howells
Scene 9: “Two weeks later” and they can finally go back to school. All the students are at Churchill. Ashley’s friend, Christine, tells Lily how excited she is to come back to school. Ashley agrees full heartedly. Ashley’s other friend Lily (still in a bad mood) explains the new rules and isn’t thrilled to be back AND we find out she likes Sawyer in the song.
“Beyond My Wildest Dreams”, from Little Mermaid
Performed by Hannah Greener, Jillian Sagers, and Mila Howells
Scene 10: After the song, “Beyond My Wildest Dreams”, Rose and Christine are shocked to hear the “he” Lily was singing about is Sawyer. Sawyer is still home because his parents wish him to stay in online school, and is just here to pick up materials for online students. Rose walks away sadly and heads to FACS after school. As she bakes in FACS, she sings, “What Baking Can Do.”
“What Baking Can Do!”, from Waitress; Performed by Mila Howells
Scene 11: Rose finishes making a blueberry pie to give to Lily so she can impress Sawyer. She knows that he had trouble making it and knows that Lily would love it. It is hard for Rose to try not to like Sawyer anymore so that Lily can be happy. Then Rose gives Lily the pie, explaining that she can impress Sawyer with it. Lily reveals WHY she is negative. Afterwards, Rose knows she made the right decision by putting her friends first before a boy!
Scene 12: Meanwhile, Lily delivers the pie to Sawyer hoping she can see him, but his dad explains that his family is at a high risk in the pandemic, and Lily cannot see Sawyer in person. Lily understands and tells Sawyer’s dad to give the pie to Sawyer. When Sawyer receives the pie, he misses school even more than he did before. He sends Lily a message saying thanks, and that he can’t wait to see her at school again when he can. Lily then sings, “Pulled”.
“Pulled”, from The Addams Family; Performed by Trinity Roberts
Scene 13: Sawyer’s dad notices Sawyer is feeling isolated after the pie was delivered. He reminds Sawyer that his friends still care. Then, everyone calls Sawyer on a Zoom call to cheer him up. They remind him that he is not alone!
“You Will Be Found”, from Dear Evan Hanson
FINALE Performed by the Entire Company via Zoom call
Thank you!!
donaTionsThis year we did a musical project as an after school theatre club instead of a live
production. Families, if able, can donate to our program on the Churchill website
in the webstore! We appreciate your support in advance, especially because we
have no ticket sales or concessions to fundraise this year.
THANK YOU to all of the parent volunteers!
We couldn’t have done without your help!
Thank you to my husband, Ryan Baguley, for his patience during my VERY busy
musical season, and to my parents for always being there emotionally and for
taking care of my dogs during this busy time.
A special shout out goes to one of my best friends and colleague,
Natalie Dallimore, artistic director at Wasatch Jr. High, for all of her love and
support.
**A BIG THANK YOU to our anonymous donor who has donated every year I have
worked at Churchill**
**Thank you Churchill’s office staff including Shawna Cluff and Chris Brimley,
counselors, janitors, faculty, and administration for supporting this production**
Thank you to all the parents who already donated to the program, you know who
you are! We are so grateful for your support for this theatre program!

Lauren Peterson
Student Choreographer
This year was quite a unique year! Our production took 12
Broadway numbers and mashed them into one story. Students
wrote the story about their lives right now in 2021. Directing
a musical during a pandemic while teaching online AND in
person has been a wild ride! The students have been fantastic
at navigating the new world of rehearsal rules. Nothing was
going to “rain on their parade” this year! Safely, we created this
movie musical to treasure forever. Having no live audience was a
different experience, but recording their performance meant we
could create special angles and shoot in different locations around
Churchill Jr. High. It really goes to show this cast persevered with
resilience to create a beautiful production!
