Prep Time: 10 minsCook: 35 mins

Difficulty: EasyServes: 2

25g butter

2 chicken breast fillets, diced

1 onion, sliced

4 garlic cloves, minced

3 tablespoons curry powder

1/2 apple, diced

1 stalk celery, chopped

1/2 red pepper, chopped

75g (3 oz) sultanas

500ml (17 fl oz) chicken stock

salt to taste

Melt butter in a heavy large fryingpan over medium heat. Add thechicken and brown on all sides forabout 7 minutes. Transfer to aplate.

Add the onion and garlic to thesame frying pan and sauté forabout 6 minutes, or untiltranslucent. Stir in the currypowder. Return chicken to pan.

Add the apple, celery, red pepper,sultanas and stock. Season withsalt. Cover and simmer for 10minutes, or until the saucethickens. Serve with rice.

Your answer to the above might wellbe mixed and you may not be awareof what is constituted as “Workingat Height”. In the UK in 2014, 29%of RIDDOR fatalities were as aresult of Working at Height. Scarythought?? Indeed it is.

So what exactly is Working atHeight? Well the Health & SafetyExecutive (HSE) give Working atHeight as “Work at height means workin any place where, if precautions werenot taken, a person could fall a distanceliable to cause personal injury.

You are working at height if you –

WORKINGAT HEIGHT?

OK, so you’ve considered the above. Now what do you need to do? Well,it is essential that when working atheight that the works are carefullyplanned, are supervised and arecarried out by a trained,experienced and competent personwho can erect / use / dismantle oroperate any Working at Heightaccess equipment i.e. independentscaffold, mobile scaffold tower,MEWP (cherry picker, scissor lift)etc.

It is essential that you have taskspecific risk assessments, methodstatements and safe systems ofwork in place. These must includethe relevant hazards, risks and also the methods of controlling the risks.You must ensure that you restrictaccess to all working atheight access platforms to all non-essential personnel and this includesmembers of the public.

Work at height does not include aslip or a trip on the level, as a fallfrom height has to involve a fall fromone level to a lower level, nor does itinclude walking up and down apermanent staircase in a building.”

Working at Height is covered by theWork at Height Regulations2005 which aims to prevent deathsand injuries caused each year by fallsat work. The Working at HeightRegulations set out 3 simple rulesfor work at height which are:

AVOID work at height if you can– if you don’t need to work atheight then don’t!If work at height cannot beavoided then you MUSTPREVENT falls by selecting andusing the right access equipmenti.e. independent scaffolding,mobile tower scaffolding, mobileelevated working platform(MEWP) etc.MINIMISE the impact of any fall.

As H&S professionals, we are oftenasked by Clients and contractors if aladder is an acceptable piece ofaccess equipment for Working atHeight. Our response to that is thatwhen a risk assessment hasidentified that using accessequipment offering a higher level offall protection is not justifiedbecause of the low risk and shortduration then yes a ladder issuitable. For instance you would notuse a mobile access tower to changea low level light bulb fitting – itsimply isn’t reasonably practicableto do so. Having said that, if the taskwas going to require using a ladderor stepladder for more than half anhour then we would recommendthat alternative access equipment isused. In any event, the ladder mustbe sited on a level and stable surfaceand wherever possible be secured. Ladders must be subject to pre-usechecks to ensure that they are fit forpurpose and do not have anydefects.
