Special Needs Information Day 2012 The Petersfield School
Saturday 24 MarchEvaluation Report
Background
Our aim in holding the Special Needs Information Days is to give families with children who have special needs, and practitioners who support those families, the opportunity to gather information about advice and services available across the county. The events are free to visitors and exhibitors.
The days are widely advertised in the months leading up to the events, via schools and early years settings, exhibitors, voluntary organisations, colleagues in Children’s Services, doctors’ surgeries, libraries, newsletters and press releases (see attached Appendix A, flyer advertising the 2012 information day).
This year’s event
This was the 14th year of the Parent Partnership Service and Contact a Family jointly organising a Special Needs Information Day, after taking a break in 2011. In the main hall were a record 47 exhibitors from the voluntary, commercial and statutory sectors. As well as information gathering, both parents and exhibitors used the day as a networking opportunity, meeting and discussing issues with other families, exhibitors and professionals.
Thanks go to Mr Giant, Honeypot Playbus, Jiggy Wrigglers and Caterpillar Crafts for providing entertainment for the children during the day. Visitors were also able to take time out during the event by stopping at the café for hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks.
Attached to this report is a list of exhibitors (Appendix B).
Workshops and Talks
This year, 10 workshops and talks were held throughout the day, on which visitors could book free of charge (see Appendix C)
Special Needs Information Day 2012/Evaluation Report1
Demand for places on most of the workshops and talks was again high. 278 places were pre-booked, and some visitors booked further places on the day. Feedback

11) General comments:
Very enjoyable/informative/interesting/well organised/excellent (several comments)
A lovely day for families. Nice to have whole family interaction on the Playbus
As a charity run playscheme, we have found the day brilliant because we have hopefully gained new children, and spoken to people about what we do
Bigger venue if possible Childcare facilities confusing to be booked in and if you could
leave a 6 year old while you were at a talk Everyone was friendly and helpful and it was a fun day Extremely useful and thought provoking Extremely well organised. Lots of useful communications
before the event Fantastic organisation, as always. Feedback given to me by
parents and professionals was how valuable they found the event
Fantastic! Loved meeting so many knowledgeable people Friendly atmosphere, good layout and interesting workshops From the flyer inviting interest, I had not realised the event
would be so large. I am really pleased we had a presence Good day. Perhaps not enough space for
pushchairs/wheelchairs down the aisles Great turnout, well organised, good workshops, glad we could
support Greater capacity of more popular workshops. I couldn’t get a
space unfortunately I think the event was very well organised and advertised. Staff
and other organisations were friendly and welcoming. We had a lot of positive interest in our stand – well worth attending
I’d love to come and run a workshop taster session for 16-25 years next year. A brilliant day – thanks so much for the invite
It was a valuable day for us Lots of help available, good advice and information.
Particularly impressed with the talk given by Luke Dicker and his mum, amazing!
More info re what can be done for children in mainstream primary school
Potentially best to have all talks on ground floor level for basis of people with disability
Really nice atmosphere Really well organised and a great opportunity to promote
Boardmaker and the library Shame such a negative view of SENCos (from ex-SENCos)
particularly as things change, all schools are different and all SENCos doing as County/Government say!
Some very good talks and stands with some knowledgeable professionals. However the primitive childhood reflexes
Special Needs Information Day 2012/Evaluation Report8
workshop – no evidence, not willing to share reasons for activities or just didn’t know – very misleading
Talks/workshops fully booked before today, please make provision for people who turn up on the day. Did not know we needed to book talks/workshops (allowed in without booking)
Thank you very much. I maximised the opportunity to go to talks but did not have enough time to do all the stands. Could stands be available for say half an hour after the last talk in future?
The day was generally a very good information day – everyone was very friendly and I was able to tell everyone about what is on offer at Avon Tyrrell
These days are very helpful for parents and the talks are very valuable and the information available
Unless I had been told by a chance phone call to PPS, I would not have known about this fantastic event
Very accommodating, warm welcome and friendly A very helpful day. Finding out about organisations I didn’t
know about. I wasn’t able to attend the talks on ADHD, could you send me the information about it?
This was our first experience so was not sure what to expect, but found it very informative
A huge thank you to those who organised the day. It was incredibly well planned and extremely informative! My three children had a fantastic day and therefore I did too. I was able to come away with lots and lots of really useful information
What a fantastic day you and the team organised. The pupils (showing everyone where the workshops were taking place) were really helpful and polite, an absolute credit to the school. Everybody involved was well prepared and the atmosphere of everyone working together was a triumph. A job well done!
Special Needs Information Day 2012/Evaluation Report9
We also asked visitors to advise us where they had travelled from to visit the event:
Feedback from workshops/talks
Participants at the workshops and talks were asked to complete an additional feedback form and the comments received are shown in Appendix D.
Thanks
Our thanks go to all the exhibitors and workshop/talk leaders for giving up their time to help us in Petersfield.
We would also like to thank The Petersfield School for their support, and in particular the SENCo, Shelley Brill, and the young people who gave up their Saturday to help visitors to find their way around. Their support was extremely valuable, and they played a huge part in making the event run smoothly.
Lastly, the Parent Partnership Service wishes to extend their gratitude again to Cay Byford of Contact a Family for organising the event with us. Sadly next year’s event will be the last one for Cay, and we shall miss her greatly.

on children who will be unlikely to ever have capacity (as audience are parents)
It was an eye opener! Very informative and interesting. It would be lovely if this
information was more readily available. Very interesting but has now left us with even more Q’s as
even more complicated than we anticipated! Carefully structured and clear presentation on this complex
area. It would have been pertinent to expand on the Court of
Protection process for people without mental capacity. The speaker was very knowledgeable but as the day was
‘special needs information’ I thought the talk would be more centred around young people, disabilities, poa etc. I feel more worried for the future than before the talk.

Very informative and so relates to my situation. Really engaging and informative – thank you. It’s nice to hear other families talk about their experiences of
how Aspergers has changed their lives and how you can take away the information and see how you can use it.
Fantastic – very uplifting and informative Very well presented to make a serious situation into
something to laugh with. Very insightful Both Luke and Jan’s honesty was refreshing and inspiring. What an amazing , inspiring young man! It was very
informative and positive. Thank you for your honesty, humour and passion for the
subject! It’s generous of you to share your feelings. You are a joy and delight to listen to.
Fantastic – a real eye opener. Inspirational to know success can be achieved. Highlighted the importance of specialist support.
I have understood so much more. I understand that I need to accommodate my granddaughter’s world – not ask her to accommodate mine.
Luke is an inspirational young person, it has given me a greater understanding of autism, ADHD for my work role and in my personal life. Thank you.

basic introduction. Very knowledgeable speaker, good use of interactive activities
Possibly tried to cover too much, but subject so vast, difficult to pitch as well as probably some at start of process with some further along. Would like to have learned more about watching for early signs.
Simple, clear examples and a broad outlook. Not too much theory!
Excellent intro to the subject Talk OK – best to avoid having educational expression with the
audience – it can lead to language getting too difficult. Very informative – the speaker obviously cares a lot about the
topic Always good to be with parents in similar situations Excellent – there are some points that I will go and put into
practice Interesting subject – speaker was clearly knowledgeable &
passionate about the subject Clear and informative Excellent – very relevant

would be helpful Good ideas to try – practical not just theory Very interesting – it is a shame that this information isn’t
given out to parents automatically Very useful general advice on teenagers, but it might have
been helpful to cover specific strategies/issues associated with special needs children
Useful to hear that every parent goes through the same situations with their teenagers
Good – plus the handouts will be useful A lot of the course content is similar to the Family Links
Parenting Puzzle, a 10 week parenting course
