St. Rose School Community Donations By PAUL MIKULA Special to the Record Our students today have op- portunities that were previously just not available. One of these opportunities, college scholar- ships, awards those wanting to further their education and mini- mize the financial burden related to pursuing their dreams of high- er education. La Grange, and Fayette County as a whole, has proven to be extremely benevolent when it comes to helping our young people. Over the past several decades, the number of organi- zations that offer financial as- sistance in the form of monetary scholarships has grown expo- nentially. This community has proven to be a huge advocate for standing behind our students and supporting them financially. Last year over $1.1 million dol- lars, including college merit, military and athletic scholar- ships, was awarded to La Grange High School graduating seniors planning to attend universities, colleges and trade schools. These scholarships reduce the financial strain on students and their families as they move ahead in life. Today, the cost of a post-secondary education is staggering, and students can no longer feasibly work their way through college. According to the www.CollegeForAllTexans. com website, looking simply at the 2019 numbers, in-state cost for a student attending a four-year public university can exceed $100,000. This number includes tuition, fees, room and board, transportation and related expenses. In many cases, the cost to attend a private university will be more than double these costs. The cost of attending a trade school is estimated to run a quarter of the cost of attending a state supported university, and the job placement rate is very high for those who elect to at- tend a technical institution. The cost of higher education has reached an unsurmountable level for many students wanting to pursue an advanced degree. The good news is that there are funds available in the form of civic organization scholarships, memorial scholarships (given in memory of a loved one), corpo- rate scholarships, and collegiate scholarships. These groups have the means by which to offer fi- nancial assistance and do so is a worthwhile investment in our fu- ture and the future of our youth. The La Grange Noon Lions Club was one of the first ser- vice organizations to begin this tradition in La Grange, laying the groundwork for the schol- arships that are awarded each year. Beginning in 1981, the club awarded one $250 scholar- ship to a graduating senior at La Grange High School. The La Grange Noon Lions Club has continued to invest in the future of local students by awarding scholarships each year to deserv- ing high school seniors. Almost forty years later, the club targets scholarships for ten or more stu- dents a year. It is rewarding to know the investment you make in an individual will have a life- long impact on their future. Competition for scholar- ship dollars will continue to grow, as will the cost of obtain- ing a post-secondary education. While student loans are avail- able to most, no one wants to be strapped by a mountain of debt upon graduation from college. A student today must do what they can to help themselves (and their family) achieve an educa- tion in the most cost-effective method possible. Advice to the graduating senior . . . apply for as many scholarship opportuni- ties as possible, even looking to websites that offer scholarship opportunities across the State of Texas. While the application process can be time consum- ing, the rewards far outweigh the time completing scholarship applications. Remember, the community you live in is very supportive and wants to invest in your future successes. Take ad- vantage of this support. The La Grange Noon Lions Club was founded in 1928 with a mission quite simply . . . To Serve. This Spring, keep our students in mind, and please take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way to serve and help shape our youth in a positive way.
