Principal’s Update

It has been an awesome semes-ter thus far. Can you believe we are already writing 2018 on documents? We are approaching halftime. We must send a message to the students that the year is not over. Keep doing rigorous activities in class. A student that is actively engaged in a class from bell to bell does not have the opportunity to misbehave. Make lessons meaningful, keep being consistent, practice your routines, and keep following your discipline plan. For attending the Fundamental 5 trainings during your conference, the SIT committee has selected January, 31, 2018 to give you the time back. This day we have a half-day staff development scheduled. Happy Holidays to every-one! May the season be kind to all of us and to our students. Let our last week of 2017 follow one of the mantras that we embrace - 'Finish strong'.

We want to thank you for continuing with excel-lence in the classrooms and building strong ties to com-munity, family, and our Cowboy Nation. As we see how hard you are working with your students, hold them accountable to high expectations in instruction as well as character.

Overall, the results of walk throughs have shown increase use of a closing five minutes before the end of the period and a more con-sistent use of small group purposeful talk throughout the class period. Continue using these best practices as part of your daily routine.

Keep the pressure on and remember to 'Finish Strong'! Happy holidays to everyone!

Walkthroughs and Observations

• This week administration will be conducting Powerwalks and T-Tess walkthroughs

• Our next Fundamental 5 staff development is Wednesday, January 10, 2018 during your conference. This training is mandatory for ALL teachers. We will be refining our skills on Critical Writing

• We saw some AWESOME closings this week as we walked through the classrooms. We were able to observe discussion amongst students, students writing , summarizing the lesson, and comparing and contrasting. Remember always close your lesson. Use the students and a timer to remind you.

• We want to see you begin implementing Frequent Small Group Purposeful Talk. Remember it takes time to and practice for students to become comfortable.

Remember have a good seed question

Assign partners

Keep the time short (You are the Time Lord)

Stay in Power Zone so you can hear the discussions

Ask some groups questions or comment on what they said

• Keep practicing what we have learned. As we walk through the classrooms we still need practice on writing the lesson frame. We are still seeing activities for the I WILL and a separate closing task for how the lesson is closed. Your I WILL should be how you are closing the lesson. There is no need to have separate ones.

• As we become experts on Framing the Lesson keep the following in the your toolbox:

We Will

Keep it Simple

Use Student Friendly Language

Remember to Chunk the Objective to the Day’s Learning

I Will

2 + 2 + 1

Write or Talk

Summarize or Compare/Contrast

Use a Timer
