[email protected] Message From the President of SVDA:

SVDA has a wonderful website due to Wendy Murry's hard work and expertise. The March Schooling Show held at the lovely Bridlewood Farm was a success and the results were quickly posted on the SVDA website. I want to thank all board members for there hard work and dedica-tion.

The club is comprised entirely of volunteers with no paid positions. So we will always be singing the same song of needing volunteers for the schooling and rated shows. Please help out not only for year end awards but to keep the club active. Remember schooling show entries and clinics require paper work and money before you are considered an official entry. Phone calls do not count. We have several exciting clinics in the future so keep checking the SVDA website. If you cannot ride in the clinic then come audit, there is no charge to watch and learn.

For those of you who may not be aware, our past President Beth Ripple is now VADA Presi-dent. Way to go Beth!

Happy Horse Journey,

Janice Mumford

SVDA Scholarship report with Jeanne McDonald:

I am currently riding a 5 year old Hanoverian mare and went to Jeanne McDonald to help me be better prepared for First Level. She worked on how my position and how my aids effects my horse.

Transitions down to a halt need to be made with a big sigh not my hands. When asking for a rein back I need to lighten my seat and sit forward on my knees and squeeze with my legs and not pull back. When I want to rein back 4 steps on the third step start to sit lightly down and that will cause her to stop the rein back. I need to think hic-cup with my chest for a half halt not pull. Hands ALWAYS need to kept forward not pulling back. I tend to ride with my legs forward so I need to bend my knees and think about keeping my ankles next to my horse.

Ride the canter with the feeling of a dolphin coming out of the water from my inside leg to outside rein. Think of pushing the front of the saddle forward and upward with my seat to develop better uphill balance. I learned how to make better use of my seat by using regular strokes for working canter and short light (lifting) strokes for collected canter. Big sweeping strokes with your seat for medium canter. Circles are hard for me since my horse always falls right in both directions. Going on the left lead I need to think of standing on the ground with my knees slightly bent and twist my body left. What happens is my right knee turns slightly left. I need to ride with that feeling of my right knee pushing slightly left into Brie’s body with my right calf wrapped around her barrel. Going on the right lead I need to keep my right calf on her and push and LIFT her barrel over to the left but at the same time keep my left leg soft like a noodle. I tend to stiffen my left leg blocking her from moving over with her body to the right. I need to allow more with my left hand and think of punching my left hand towards her right ear. I worked on using a soft aid to get a quick response. Brie is a quiet horse that is very happy puttering around the ring with a lot of kicking from me. I was told to lightly ask and if I did not get the quick forward response then tap her with my whip just behind my leg to reinforce my aid.

It was amazing how soft and quiet my aids became with a responsive horse just by correcting my position and de-manding a response. Thank you SVDA for providing this wonderful learning opportunity with an international judge who is very good at working with the average rider! Sincerely, Janice Mumford
