70 MILLION on the road: the Haldex automatic brake adjuster is unsurpassed. It is timeless even though it was invented almost 100 years ago. It’s a centenarian in top form. Yet a

new, even better version will premiere at the IAA in Hanover.

‘Creating Value’ is the slogan of the Haldex IAA and Automechanika stands, which offer a host of innovations to be experienced. The new TEM® Safe Parking Single trailer control module augments the award-winning TrCM+ and TEM® Safe Parking systems. TEM® Safe Parking Single’s so-called ‘Deadman’ function makes the handling of uncoupled trailers, which can be hazardous, almost foolproof.

Modular systems are a Haldex speciality. Another example is the new 19.5-inch ModulT disc brake that is also joining the product family. A preview of this world-first product is included in this edition of Haldex Magazine.

It is, therefore, only logical that Haldex is pushing the boundaries on products that integrate into existing systems. The new third generation Haldex EB+ has been designed to accommodate the increasing number of electronic systems for trailers and is fully compatible with Fleet+ data analyses. With Fleet+, Haldex demonstrates pioneering work in data handling. The system has set the standard for transparency and user-friendliness.

Haldex also goes the extra mile in product support. ‘Remote Services’ is a new offering that virtually brings the electronics specialist directly into the workshop to save the day in the event of a service bottleneck. You can read exactly how this works in this edition of Haldex Magazine, as well as everything about the Haldex displays at Automechanika and IAA.

We hope you enjoy reading this edition.

TRAILER PRODUCTION

LOWER EXPECTATIONS

Expectations for trailer production for the current year are subdued. European production in 2011 was approximately 69 percent of that of record year 2007. Industry insiders are banking on a slight decrease for 2012. Talk is of a just under four percent drop in production from 2011.

Trade Fairs

CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGYTwo important industry trade fairs are taking place in 2012. Haldex invites you to visit its stand at the Automechanika and the IAA Commercial Vehicles trade shows.

TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP: a phrase that increasingly drives investment decisions.

‘Creating value’: Haldex’s response when it comes to best possible return on investment. This is also the company’s slogan for its dis-plays at Automechanika in Frankfurt and the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hanover.

Solutions that create added value: this is Haldex’s focus. The displays in Frankfurt and Hanover provide proof, each in their own way. And, at both trade fairs, Haldex will focus not only on products, but also on service and af-

ter-market support.

At Automechanika, Haldex will premiere its new Remote Services solution, which gives online support to local workshops. If a techni-cian needs help with electronics, for example, Haldex experts can directly access the work-shop’s system to provide quick, easy, cost-effective assistance.

The particularly maintenance-friend-ly ModulT disc brake, whose pads can be changed in a jiffy, will also be presented at Automechanika. And if the brake does need

repair, technicians can find everything they need in the practical, pre-assembled tool kit.

When it comes to analysing trailer data, the Haldex diagnosis tool Fleet+ has led the way and continues to do so. There’s no easier way to investigate rogue results in a trailer’s history than with Fleet+, which will also be

displayed at IAA.

The Haldex display at IAA fully reflects in-novation. A new, 19.5-inch version of the ModulT disc brake will be presented. The two well-known trailer control modules with the award-winning Safe Parking function will be joined by a third – TEM® Safe Parking Single with the ‘Deadman’ function that not only se-cures truck and trailer coupling but also trailer manoeuvring in an almost foolproof manner.

The third generation EB+, which will pre-miere at IAA, offers increased functional-ity and a greater range of connections. ModulAir®, the intelligent air treatment sys-tem, shows that compatible systems and strategies can save both fuel and space.

Last but not least, Haldex TPMS, also on display, exemplifies state-of-the-art tire

pressure monitoring. Haldex TPMS moni-tors not only the pressure, but also the tem-perature of tires. This extra information is just as relevant for tires as for the axle hub or brakes.

Another reason to celebrate: the Haldex brake adjuster has just set another produc-tion record of more than 70 million units glob-ally. This is reason enough to grant it a special place at both trade fairs; and it will also be presented at IAA in a further improved ver-sion.

In addition to traditional exhibits, interac-tive presentations and new videos will make a visit to the Haldex display a unique experi-ence. Haldex specialists are looking forward to meeting and talking with you.

Safety

GOOD THINGS COME in threes. As a follow-up to the award-win-ning Trailer Control Module+ Safe

Parking (TrCM+) and the Trailer Emergency Module (TEM®), Haldex is introducing the TEM® Safe Parking Single system. Key dif-ferences from the other two popular trailer modules: TEM® Safe Parking Single offers even greater safety and has only one instead of two control knobs.

In this case, less is more. Behind the sin-gle knob control is the ‘Deadman’ function, which ensures especially low-risk handling

SURE THINGEnhanced safety features: the Trailer Emergency Module can now be obtained in the TEM® Safe Parking Single version with only one control knob and the 'Deadman' function.

of the trailer during manoeuvring. With the Deadman function, the parking brake of the uncoupled trailer can be disengaged only by manually pressing the red and yellow knob.

With TEM® Safe Parking Single and its Deadman function, there is only one way to manoeuvre a trailer that has been uncoupled from the truck: if the supply line (red cou-pling) is connected, the parking brake can be disengaged by pressing the control knob. The same procedure applies if the trailer is coupled and the air hoses are connected: the parking brake will automatically release

THE SAFE PARKING FUNCTIONThe patented, multi-award-winning Safe Parking function prevents unintentional release of trailer brakes during coupling. When the driver uncouples the trailer, Safe Parking ensures that upon disconnection of the air supply line (red coupling) the trailer parking brake is engaged. This means that the trailer is secure and that the parking brake will not release if, upon subsequent coupling, the red coupling is attached first. Connection of air supply lines in the wrong order is one of the most frequent and most hazardous mistakes in day-to-day operation.

Safety

example, risks to children playing around a trailer parked on the roadside.

TEM® Safe Parking Single does not affect professional manoeuvring, for example, by port hauliers whose vehicles are always equipped with appropriate pneumatics that allow the parking brake to temporarily dis-engage securely through decompression of supply lines.

With TEM® Safe Parking Single, the parking brake engages automatically the moment the driver disconnects the red coupling.

when the control knob is pressed back into its original position. The vehicle is then ready to go.

The single control knob with the Deadman function offers maximum safety in two ways. First, it prevents a trailer from being parked with its brakes inadvertently disengaged. This can occur if a trailer with disengaged brakes is moved with unconnected supply lines – for example, with a forklift. Or if the driver forgets to re-engage the parking brake after uncou-pling. Such circumstances create dangerous conditions for drivers and passers-by.

Furthermore, TEM® Safe Parking Single eliminates all risks associated with a vehicle whose brakes have been disengaged through accidental activation of the release knob – for

Manoeuvring with connected supply lines is now possible.

TEM® Safe Parking Single prevents trailers from roll-ing, a dangerous situation, if the parking brake has not been engaged.

Brake Adjuster

The automatic brake adjuster has passed the 70 million mark. An even better version will soon be available.

It just goes on and on

Page 9: Haldex MAG25_GB

Autumn/Winter 2012 Haldex Magazine 09

On the road, automatic brake adjusters were first used in buses.

Brake Adjuster

EXACTLY 99 YEARS ago, Axel Diurson, the Swedish railway engineer, made a breakthrough discovery. In 1913, he

was granted a patent for a ‘device for the automatic adjustment of brakes’, which was based on the clearance principle. This was the end of manual adjustment of railway brakes, a complicated operation performed by railway personnel.

But it was not until the late 1960s that the automatic brake adjuster was used in road vehicles. Only then was it possible to apply the clearance-based automatic adjustment principle, used so successfully in the railway sector, to smaller dimension commercial ve-hicles.

Automatic brake adjusters are a pillar of Haldex’s worldwide business. They are based on the clearance principle, which is still state-of-the-art. Designed to withstand more than 2.5 million applications, Haldex offers two versions of the automatic brake adjuster.

The classic AA1 brake adjuster offers sim-ple and reliable installation utilising a control arm and fix point. The S-ABA brake adjuster, introduced in the 1990s, permits free selec-tion of the control arm position for error-free installation and optimal performance. Haldex holds a worldwide patent on the cur-rent version of the S-ABA self-setting brake

adjuster.

The TSS is an application specially de-signed for trailers depending on the axle type. It is available for both the AA1 and the S-ABA brake adjuster.

Haldex’s share of the world market for au-tomatic brake adjusters is about 60 percent. And just as Haldex is exceeding the 70 mil-lion production mark for this product, a new and further improved version is on the start-ing blocks.

The new S-ABA version, which will go into production in mid-2013, continues the unique success of Axel Diurson’s invention, which will rightly celebrate its hundredth an-niversary next year.

What is important to remember when installing an automatic brake adjuster?Schreiner: For the AA1, you must establish the correct base position. As a general rule, all brake adjusters must have sufficient axial clearance; but there must be no clearance from the control arm to the fix point. If the automatic adjustment is faulty, can it be fixed manually?Schreiner: No. If the automatic ad-justment is not working properly, manual manipulation may improve the situation temporarily. But the brake lining clearance may continue to increase and there may eventu-ally be no braking effect.

What is the likely cause of problems with the automatic adjustment?Schreiner: Cause ranges from incor-rect installation, lack of axial clear-ance or damaged control arm to a worn cone clutch or loose control arm. A specialist can pinpoint the problem.

Can the automatic brake adjuster be repaired?Schreiner: We offer repair kits and necessary tools. Repair instructions can be downloaded free of charge from Findex on the Haldex website.

Data

IS THE STATISTICAL ANOMALY in the fleet due to driver or material? The third generation of Fleet+ can quickly provide

an answer to such questions thanks to the search function in its ‘Snapshots’ domain, which permits user-specified criteria for tar-geted data filtering. Fleet+ can systemati-cally scan for specific information and, via

the search function, promptly answer al-most any question entered by the operator.

For example, if rollover stability or ABS has been called into action frequently, this may be due to overly sporty driving. Exces-sive brake wear, however, may just as likely result from insufficient supply pressure: if

pressure is less than 5.5 bars, the spring brakes engage lightly but definitively. The third generation of Fleet+ provides a rapid yet comprehensive overview of these is-sues. In general, the analysis is divided into five categories: Overview, Snapshots, His-togram, Trip records and User info. Fleet+ stores data for the most recent 1,000 trips

Data

in the ‘Overview’ category, which provides, primarily, information on journeys taken and kilometres travelled.

From there, the user can call up differ-ent kinds of information via the ‘Snapshots’ category whose spectrum ranges from the number of times AUX was activated using total brake application to journeys with ex-cessive axle loads.

The data is displayed with diagrams and can be exported to a PC – for example, as an Excel spreadsheet. The ‘Histogram’ option pro-vides in-depth information such as a detailed breakdown of brake pressure. The diagrams

show the extent of brake pressure coordina-tion between truck and trailer. ‘Trip records’ is a comprehensive logbook that contains 18 additional criteria that can be quickly scanned or hidden with a simple click of the mouse. What’s more, here as well, the user may cus-tomise filtering of data.

Has lift axle use exceeded a certain thresh-old or tire pressure fallen below a particular value? Each relevant trip is highlighted in yel-

low and parameters quickly identified by just scrolling across. The final menu option, ‘User info’, is reserved for personal comments. It functions as a practical electronic notebook. Comments and remarks made by the user can be easily saved to a PC in the same way as ECU data.

PIONEERING WORKWith the launch of the Fleet+ data log-ging system in 2001, Haldex pioneered greater transparency of trailer data and continues to set standards with its third generation of Fleet+. The depth and scope of recorded data and the system’s user-friendly nature are exemplary. Haldex Fleet+ is compatible with all current PC systems and available in 16 languages.

Almost any question about trailer use can be answered via the search function.

EB+

SEAMLESS HOUSING, more connections, and faster response: these are the main improvements offered by the third gen-

eration EB+.

An extended operating range also makes EB+ more universal than before. The previ-ous 24 V system now ranges from 8 to 32 V and thereby offers a 12 V system for North America or Australia.

The ECU is encased to protect it from exter-nal damage. Instead of a screw connection, the upper and lower housing components

Increased versatility

have been welded together. Two of the five AUX electrical connections are now double engaged. There are also two CAN bus-based diagnostic ports instead of one. This means two CAN bus systems can operate indepen-dently. In practice, this means clearer, simpler cabling.

In this way, the third generation EB+ takes into account the rapidly growing number of wide-ranging systems that communi-cate with EBS. From trailer lift axles, brake wear sensors, reset-to-ride function and Soft Docking to Fleet+, tire pressure monitoring

and Info Point, the third generation EB+ is able to integrate considerably more systems than before.

The Super Aux connection (ISO 1185 with three digital inputs) will be available as stand-ard equipment in the 2M and the 3M versions. The 3M version will also be upgraded and of-fer, like the 2M version, an activation back-up of the five or seven-pole connection via the brake light according to ISO 1185, or the 15- pole connection according to ISO 12098. This guarantees voltage to the load-sensitive brake and the ABS even if the ISO 7638 con-nection has been disrupted or is not work-ing.

The number of EBS-controlled trailer systems is continu-ously increasing .

IT COMBINES THE BEST of both worlds: like the well-known ModulT brake for 22.5-inch wheels, the slimmer 19.5-inch

ModulT utilises the special Haldex single piston principle, which has two important advantages: a large support area for uniform pressure on brake pads and a lightweight construction.

But Haldex did not reduce the pounds with the single piston design alone: all brake parts, and the calliper, in particular, have un-dergone an intensive finite element analysis. The result is a new and especially slim, but stronger, architecture.

The brake calliper and pads together weigh only 28 kg, a whole three kilos less than the ModulT DBT22LT 22.5-inch brake, the lightest non-axle bound trailer disc brake in the 22.5-inch category. The ModulT DBT19 has also raised the stan-dard for main-tenance and repair. With the new design,

Small but mightyBig technology, small size: the 22.5-inch ModulT now has a weight-optimised counterpart for 19.5-inch wheels.

CLOSE UP ON TECHNOLOGYThe new 19.5-inch brake from Haldex has been designed for a maximum brake torque of 18 kNm and for brake discs 375 millime-tres in diameter and 45 millimetres thick. In other words, the ModulT DBT19 is the ideal solution not only for 19.5-inch wheel, nine tonne maximum trailer axles but also, due to its slim design, for the restricted space on trucks and buses.

19.5-inch brake is completely enclosed. And thanks to the inverted bellows, the brake is far less subject to damage from dirt or stirred up solids.

A big advantage of the ModulT is the simple procedure for pad replacement.

engineers have minimised the number of parts subject to wear. The ModulT stainless steel guide pins, for example, are completely maintenance-free.

Brake pads can be changed without spe-cial tools as quickly as this: press the pad re-tainer spring on the calliper with your thumb to release it to reach the pads.

Another advantage of the ModulT DBT19 is extraordinarily uniform wear of the inner and outer pads. Particularly well-balanced clamp force distribution makes this possi-ble. Uniform pressure prevents heat cracks and uneven wear and also improves brake efficiency.

In addition, double roller bearings in the lever mechanism stand for low hyster-esis and high efficiency. The brake is well- protected from potentially damaging ex-ternal forces: the calliper guide of the
