Letter from the President

Yolanda Bazan, CDOA, CPLTA

Greetings HADOA members,

It is unbelievable how the year has flown by so fast. HADOA has had some

great speakers and HADOA’s 1st VP (Kelly Sandoval) has done an outstanding job

of bringing a variety of speakers and topics. In May, Alyce Hoge covered the basics

of oil & gas leases. This was an outstanding refresher class for Division Order

analysts, and Alyce did a great job of answering questions from the audience

members.

As everyone is aware, these are trying times for the oil & gas business. In

light of the challenging times ahead of us, be assured your Board of Directors work

hard every day to provide you with high-quality opportunities in the area of continu-

ing education, networking, professional development, and career assistance.

HADOA’s Board voted last month to increase membership luncheons prices

by $3 from $32 to $35 beginning with the August luncheon. This decision was made

so that HADOA can remain competitive and match ALTA & NHAPL’s current

luncheon prices. In addition, the slight price increase will help HADOA break even

after paying Petroleum Club luncheon expenses, speaker expenses, and door priz-

es.

I challenge and encourage each of you to get involved to help make this

organization an even greater one! This is your organization and we welcome your

involvement. Whether it is to submit an article, serve on a committee, or run for an

office. It is one of my goals to encourage each of you to recognize you natural tal-

ents and to develop those abilities to reach your full potential. Your efforts can and

will make a difference.

Make your plans now to attend the 2016 Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona on

September 7th through the 9th. You do not want to

miss this one! It is important to note that late regis-

tration deadline is August 8th. Prices go up $100 on

August 9th. I encourage you to grab your boots

and scoot to Scottsdale for good educational time.

Thank you,

Yolanda Bazan

The April 20th seminar featured two separate sessions. The Morning/Lunch Session fea-

tured speakers from Steptoe and Johnson, PLLC. Karen O. Donnelly will spoke about “The

State of Texas - What Does She Own?” and Don Hueske and Ashley Howie Tallichet spoke

about “Transfer on Death Deeds in Texas and Other Nonprobate Estate Planning Mecha-

nisms”. The Afternoon Session featured speakers from the University of Tulsa Continuing

Education Science & Engineering. Brian Musso spoke about “The Good, Bad, and Ugly:

How Oil Reservoirs Have Changed with Technology” and John Farina spoke about “The

Keys to Unlocking the Shale Bonanza: Horizontal Drilling & Fracing”. Although the bad

weather prevented some of those registered from attending, our April luncheon was a

great success! All speakers provided engaging and informative presentations.

The May luncheon featured Alyce Hoge with Land Training who spoke about “Oil and Gas

Lease Basics”. As always, Alyce gave a dynamic and educational presentation for the

luncheon attendees.

Coming up soon, the July 20th luncheon will include a presentation by Jason Lucas with

Steptoe & Johnson, PLLC , about the History of American Oil and Gas from 1855 -1947.

Jason will give a fun and interactive presentation examining the history of oil and gas

development in America. Although not comprehensive, the presentation looks at a couple of

key figures and companies that have propelled America into a world class producer and

developer of natural resources.

The August 17th will be presented by Benchmark Communications

(www.benchmarkcom.com) and will focus on “Communicating with Upset Royalty Owners”.

Benchmark’s expertise in Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), allows them to help clients

work with emotions and emotional people when they communicate. NLP is the study of

behavior and language patterns. Benchmark has been teaching these skills for more than

twenty years with the oil and gas industry - and other industries around the country.

This presentation will cover key points such as:

* What’s at stake with your Royalty Owners - why they are so critical to your future

* Common mistakes made when communicating with Royalty Owners

* Creating an “experience” that is memorable and positive when you interact with

Royalty Owners - even when your answer is not what they want to hear

* Communicating at an emotional level - studies show emotions trump data when

people make decisions

* Communication “boxing” versus “aligning” - the choice is yours each time you interact

with Royalty Owners

* Language patterns that increase or decrease emotions

* The role of trust and rapport in maintaining good Royalty Owner relationships

* The elements of rapport and deep listening

Sambuca Summer Soc ia l

Submitted by Kelly Sandoval, 1st Vice-President

The June 9th Social at Sambuca was a lot of fun for everyone who joined us. We enjoyed

networking, live music, and great appetizers. Over 25 people registered to attend the so-

cial, but only about half that many attended and as a result, HADOA provided twice as

many appetizers than were needed. In the future, please update your RSVP on the web-

site if you are unable to attend a social. We use the RSVP headcount to order appe-

tizers for the group. The next social will be on September 29th and will be held in the City

Centre area. We hope to see you there!

Well, here we are, and it’s already time for the 2nd newsletter for

of 2016. I was thinking, “What should I write about this time?”

Nothing came to me until I started to think about how much I

have enjoyed being a part of HADOA, and all the awesome

people that I have met and become friends with. It is an honor to

be involved with this organization where I have learned so much

about the Oil & Gas Industry. HADOA is about learning and

sharing with others to continue making ourselves better people

and stronger employees. It’s all about growing and networking

with the people around us. Never forgot what this organization

has done for you, and what it will do for you, even during the

toughest times and in the best of times. Stay connected and

involved for your future.

Membersh ip Update

April Luedecke Third Vice President

HADOA welcomes the following new members this quarter: Teresa Morrison, Apache Corporation

Teresa Ngo, Linn Energy Valerie Vuong, Memorial Resource Development

Melissa Hernandez, Targa Resources, Inc Stefany Watson, Kinder Morgan

Jenna Hazzard, EP Energy Cosette Barnett, Consultant

Jackie Hopkins, EP Energy Daniel Brooks, EP Energy

It’s been an interesting year as we all eagerly await an upturn in the price of oil and gas. It’s also an

election year and that has given an additional level of uncertainty in the markets, adding to each of us

some anxiety about career and personal finances.

While I can’t give you assurance that the worst is over, I can say that I have great confidence in the

future of our country, the recovery of the economy and resilience of the energy industry. I also have

hope that we as analysts can weather the storm around us. The list below are suggestions I think may

help.

1. Read 20 minutes a day, every day.

Expand your vocabulary, learn more. Make your brain and learning a priority.

2. Walk it off.

Work your body in a way that’s right for you. Expend some energy and lower your stress.

3. Find your spiritual center.

Whatever yours may be, channel your higher power. It will be your compass and your anchor when

you need it most.

4. Develop relationships.

Make room for people at home or work. You can’t do it all alone and others can benefit from your

winning smile and sparkling personality.

5. Rest and recharge.

Swim in the ocean. Pick up the paintbrush. Watch Jim Carrey in “Yes Man” and laugh until you

cry. Take your PTO. You’re no good to anybody if you’re too burned out to care.

As always, if you have any questions about membership, difficulty getting sponsors, or simply trouble

logging in to your account, please send an email to us at [email protected].

As we close in on the midway point through the year and half way through my final

term as treasurer I am inclined to take a look back over the last 18 months. It goes

without saying that this has been an incredibly difficult time for our industry and our

profession. Despite these hard times, HADOA has been diligent in reacting to, and

adjusting to the times.

In 2015 we implemented the use of Quickbooks for our accounting records. By

doing this, it allows us to have up to date financial information and provides for more

accurate budgeting and reporting. While we showed a loss in 2015, we paid a

couple of contracts two years in advance to keep prices low thus allowing us to

improve budget position this year. We have also been able to negotiate lower rates

for our website maintenance and expedite certain day to day functions.

In 2015 we were able to provide scholarships for 3 of our members to go to the

NADOA institute with the help of NADOA. This year, as you may have noticed, we

have cut back on the gift cards at luncheons and have gone to providing luncheon

and seminar scholarships. We have also cut back on the spending at board

meetings and worked to eliminate other unnecessary expenses. By doing this, we

have been able to provide 3 scholarships to the NADOA Institute in Scottsdale from

the HADOA budget. This is in addition to what was recently announced from

NADOA where they will be offering assistance to six of our members to attend

institute. We have also expanded our presence by offering HADOA socials in the

various regions to allow for more networking opportunities.

In addition to HADOA it has been a busy year for me personally, as many of you

know I changed companies this year from BHP Billiton to Indigo Minerals and on

June 2, my wife and I welcomed our third son, Henderson Sebastian Ramsey, into

the world. I appreciate all of your patience with me over the past few months as I

know there have been times when I was difficult to get in touch with. Thank you for

your support in this position and I look forward to serving the association in other

roles in the future.

Updates f rom the Directors

Employment Networking – Lyndsay Romano

Thus far in 2016 we have had a total of seven job opportunities

posted to our job bank. I believe this is encouraging given the

market conditions. As Employment Networking Director I’ve

established a few relationships with recruiters who will continue

to contact HADOA as opportunities arise. I’ve also done my best

to maintain up-to-date postings. However, if you find that a

position listed on our job bank is closed, please contact HADOA

and we’ll have it taken down. It is my goal that all positions on

our site be readily available to our members.
