Gary Lee Pellett Sept. 23, 1945 – Feb. 4, 2015
Gary and his wife Cheryl joined GWTA, CO, Chapter A, Front Range Gold in 1997. His hobbies were Classic cars, Motorcycle Touring and a special dog named Zoey. They were always involved with rides, activities and helping others. In 2009 they were the Chapter Family of the Year. Gary’s health led them to AZ for the climate that extended his life. He had to give up riding but always talked about the trips, memories, and the fun they had. Sunset rides and ice cream were always the favorite. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, 3 children, 11 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all he knew.

11TOURING NEWS
Greetings from Maine!!
Today it is really hard to imagine in 5 months we will be in New Mexico where I understand we will be complaining of the heat wave!! Today is it 16 below, and I am repairing a couple mail boxes , because our town plow guy thought he would help me by clipping the top off and I found it splattered across the road.. Oh well @ least the mail remained intact and readable!! Are we having fun yet!!
Speaking of New Mexico has everyone got there registrations for Gold Rush into GWTA Headquarters!! Time is running out—hurry, BEAT THE HEAT!!!!
I am pleased to announce the results of the general election to the Board of Directors have been completed. All candidates ran unopposed. We are welcoming new faces this year Mike and Ron, welcome aboard!!!
Region A: Mike Zmiarovich from Washington has been appointed for 1 year to fill term ending 2015 Region B: Charles Horner from California running from month to month bases until position filled
Region C: Bill Seith from Illinois Region D: Jim Quinn from Tennessee. Running for his second term
Region E: Larry Oswald from Texas Region F: Ronald Klan from Michigan (A three year term)
Board of Directors……..
Region H: Darlene Farnum from Maine running from month to month bases until position filled
Region J: Garrie Wayne from Ontario Canada Life Membership Representative: Eugene Jones from Michigan running for his second term
Just as a refresher regarding the elections of the Board of Directors and how they are elected:
The Board of Directors is the governing body of GWTA and is given their powers through the GWTA By-Laws. The membership elects their representative to the Board of Directors. The Chairman of the Board is elected from the membership of the Board after serving on the board for one year. Each elected member of the Board must be a member of GWTA owning an operable Gold Wing.
I wish to thank you all for what you have contributed to GWTA it is a privilege to be able to work with everyone as we share our theme of “ Destination Friendship” not only within our GWTA circle as well as our extended family and friends.
Sincerely
Dennis Farnum COB

13TOURING NEWS
From the past!! Touring News, December, 1988
I have been asked by Carlene to inform those who knew and loved Bud Morris that he has gone ahead of us to organize another motorcycle association. Bud’s GWTA member number #1 will be waiting at a coffee shop for us to join him - even if it is snowing. RIP dear friend. Donna Reynolds GWTA has taken another great step towards the future. Your Board of Directors have lowered the border between Canada and the United States. The official title of GWTA is now Gold Wing Touring Association of North America. We welcome our new mem- bers from the North. We look forward to the day when a Canadian will seek a seat on the Board of Directors and share in the direction of GWTA's future. There are no separate regions in Canada and the United States, there are regions in North America. I know each of you joins with me in welcoming British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan to Region A, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec to region F, and the Maritime providences to region H. As G.W.T.A. continues to grow and prosper, I offer the follow- ing reprint as food for thought: We are a great Association with a bright future. See if you can find yourself described in any of the twelve ways to work against an Association. If you cannot find yourself in any of the 12 then you are a typical GWTA member - need I say more as to why we have succeeded? HERE ARE 12 WAYS TO KILL AN ASSOCIATION:
No one individual sabotages a community association inten-tionally. But a glance at this list might reveal ways to work against an association's best interests without being aware of it. 1.) Don't come to meetings. If you do come, be late. 2.) If you attend, find fault with the work of others. 3.) Never run for the Board - it's easier to criticize. 4.) Be angry if you're appointed to a committee. 5.) If you’re asked your opinion, say nothing. Afterward, tell everyone how things should have been. 6.) Do no more than necessary. If a few persons work tirelessly, complain that the Association is run by a clique. 7.) Don't bother to help new members get involved. 8.) Don't tell Board members how they can help you or achieve certain goals but if they don't, quit participating. 9.) When you attend a meeting, vote for one thing, and then forget about it after you go home. 10.) Agree to everything at the meeting, disagree later.
11.) Take all the benefits association provides - but don't make a personal contribution. 12.) Talk about cooperation, but don't practice it. (Reprinted with permission from CAI News, the Newsletter of the Community Associations Institute, 1423 Powhatan Street,Suite 7, Bud Even though people pass on, they still leave their thoughts and ideas behind and are not forgotten.
A Blast From The Past Issue of Touring News. Second Time Around and Still Worth Reading Again!
14 March/April 2015
Spyder vs Motorcycle
2015 found the Hensley garage with a new motorcycle! A popular question has been asked a lot by our fellow riders.
What is the Spyder like to ride ?
* Steering ……..
The Spyder takes more effort to turn the handlebar and you cannot counter-steer. You must steer the handlebar in the direction you want to go. You also have to be careful not to turn the throttle when turning the handlebar.
* Turning ………….
Both the driver and passenger will feel a lateral force during a turn. You need to lean in the direction you are turning to keep your balance on the Spyder. The passenger should hang on while turning to keep from falling off. The Spyder will not lean.
* Riding straight but feeling the Spyder skip from side-to-side for a 'jerky-ride'............
If you squeeze the grips, the Spyder will have a lateral movement from side-to-side. We experienced this jerky-ride of side-to-side movement when leaving the dealership. After some miles under our belts, the jerky-ride goes away as your grip on the handlebars relaxes. If the jerky-ride does not go away, you may need to have your front tires laser aligned. * The #1 difference: The lateral force or
inertia pull on the driver and passenger when turning. The Spyder will not lean. A safety reminder is the Spyder may roll over if you make an aggressive hard turn and you may be thrown off due to the lateral force when turning.
.What does a Spyder and traditional Trike have in common ?
1. Wider than a bike
2. Will not tip over when stopping and you don't have to place your feet down at stops
3. Cannot share a lane with another bike
4. For safety, your lane position should be in the middle of the lane
5. Need a larger space to park
Now for your safety review test……………..
1. Do you know how to engage (turn on/off) your safety hazard lights ?
2. Do you know where your horn button is on your handlebar ?
3. Do you know where your High/Low headlight beam switch is on your handlebar ?
See you on the road………………

The Train At birth we board the train and meet our parents. We believe they will always travel by our side. However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone. As time goes by, other people will board the train. Some will be significant: i.e., our siblings, good friends, children, and, if lucky, the love of our life. Many will step down and leave a permanent vacuum. Others will go so unnoticed that we don't realize they vacated their seats. The train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells. Success is having a good relationship with all passengers. This requires that we give the best of ourselves. The mystery is that we do not know at which station we, ourselves, will step down. So, we must live each day in the best way -- love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are. When the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty, we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life. I wish you a joyful journey on life's train. Reap success and give lots of love. More importantly, be thankful for the journey. Thank you for being one of the passengers on my train. Unknown

17TOURING NEWS
Hi Everyone, It is now mid-March (as I write this article) and the riding season in many parts of the country is just now beginning. Unfortunately, here in California it has never ended. We have had no real winter in most of this State and many of us have continued riding. I was watching the news last night when the cities in Ohio where shown with a lot of flooding. It would be really great if we could build a pipeline to bring that water to our lakes and water storage in California. Two months ago (for the February Newsletter), I wrote about the changes coming here in California regarding motorcycle training. At a meeting I attended, regarding this change, it was announced that in the military the statistics regarding fatal motorcycle accidents have gone down significantly when riders attend advanced training classes. With the beginning of the riding season in your area, now is the time to look at what classes might be offered to advance and enhance your skills.
Check with dealers to see if they have any flyers on local classes and if they don’t check the web for motorcycle safety classes in your area. Every state in the union has some type of program for motorcycle safety and many sites offer advanced classes. I would suggest contacting a local site to see if you would do a group class for your chapter. At Gold Rush, I plan to have our Skilled Rider Course again so if you will be attending this is another way to enhance your skills. Nothing would please me more that to have to run this a couple of times make sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved. In the world of riding a motorcycle, training and learning should be an never ending process. We have to realize that riding has to become second nature and the only way we are able to achieve that status is to continue to learn and practice, practice, practice. Hope to see you at Gold Rush. Doug Green, National RED
