As usual the summer months seem to fly by. Here it is the last couple days in August with Labor Day nearly upon us. We only have about two months left of scheduled chapter rides. Seems like just a couple days ago we started chapter rides. That was May, here it is al-most September. Where has the time gone?
We’ve had over 20 chapter ride opportunities thru August. We still have a few more ride dates scheduled in September and October. This is your chapter and everyone can and should make suggestions for rides or activities. We hope you’ll join us for the remaining scheduled rides. Please check the latest revision of the Ride-Activity schedule in this month’s chapter newsletter for the latest info.
This past month we had some really great rides and enjoyed some good food too! Thanks to Paul, Doug and Keith for good rides and great restaurant destinations!
New this year we added a Breakfast Ride on the second Tuesday of the month. When the weather wasn’t a factor, we’ve been having about seven or eight people attend. We’ve gone to some really great new places serving some good home cooked vittles. Generally we ride about 30-45 minutes at most to the restaurant. For those of us working from home (retired) won’t you join us for a ride, good food and fellowship?
In case you haven’t heard and are wondering, the 40th annual WingDing will be closer to home next year, back in Knoxville, Tennessee from August 28—September 1, 2018.

Chapter W gathered on Wednesday August 2, 2017 at the Sirloin Stockade in Columbus. Paul Dettmer opened the gathering with the Pledge to the Flag with 20 members present. Dave Shaffer, Chapter Director, announced several changes that National will be making in 2018. They will be doing away with the position of Rider Educator and replacing it with Chapter Ride Co-ordinator to assume that position. There will be no Regions. Paper work and any information will go from Chapters to Districts to National. MEC's will add social gatherings to their position and the Treasurer will add money making project to their position. Upcoming rides will be: Sunday August 6 afternoon ride, Wednesday August 9 ride, Saturday August 19 all day ride, Wednesday August 23 evening ride and Sunday August 27 afternoon ride. The third Wednesday August 10 dinner ride will be at the Mexican Restaurant on Central. Don't forget the 2nd Tuesday morning breakfast rides. Nothing from MEC. Doug Hollenbeck talked about when a person rides solo to ride on the right side of the road and if follow-ing a car swirl back and forth occasionally to remind the driver ahead that you are back there. When passing a semi go around quickly. Reminder that there are still rides needing leaders. If you know of a place to go and do not want to lead please let Kim or Keith Hall or Dave Shaffer know and they will be glad to help you. They are around 4 of us going to Wing Ding this year. Have a safe ride. Secretary, Gloria Dettmer

Fellow Riders, The scariest thing on the road now days is a distracted driver - texting, emailing, making calls, and etc. Automation can be a blessing and a curse. One of our fellow Ch W members was behind a driver on US 31 that appeared to have their head down and swerving. Thinking they may be having a issues due to illness or something they drove next to them and to their amazement it was a young lady deeply concentrat-ing on her cell phone apparently texting. The number one cause of accidents these days are distracted drivers. Just look at the increased number of accidents in construction areas - mostly due to distracted drivers. This can include using your GPS. Plus a lot of newer vehicles have all kinds of automated gadgetry that can distract us. We need to make sure we are not one of these distracted drivers or riders. Program your stuff ahead of time. If you need to do any of this while on the road find a place to pull over and do it so as not to endanger yourself for someone else. Please keep an eye out for the other driver, and make sure you pay attention also and not distracted. It is with sadness that I must inform you that Donna and I have decided to sell our GL1800 and buy a classic car convertible. Donna no longer feels safe riding a motorcycle due to some of my comments above and due to our age. Considering the cost of triking our bike - we can purchase a classic car with a convertible top. Plus I know how to work on classic cars but struggle to work on these newer GL1800s. We want to continue being GWRRA and Ch W members and attend the winter card parties. Thanks for all your support. Camping at the First & Last Region D / Michigan Rally
By Kim & Keith Hall
The Hall's had a great time camping at the Region D/Michigan Rally. We set up camp on Wednesday evening
after riding for 11 hours and then went out for supper. When we got back, campers had set up all around us.
To our surprise out walked Lonnie Hunter from the camper next door. No better neighbor to have for the
weekend. On the other side of us was a chapter from Canada. They were a fun group.
The weather was perfect except for a pop-up rain shower Thursday evening but that didn’t stop us. We got out
the Skip-Bo cards and played a few rounds of golf inside the camper. During the day Thursday, we took a ride
up to northern Michigan to the Tunnel of Trees and rode along the shoreline of Lake Michigan. It was a beau-
tiful ride.
We spent all day Friday at the rally. There were several activities going on and lots of people to talk to. There
were also several vendors so we got to do some shopping. We also participated in the scavenger hunt (we were
given hints and had to figure out what to find). We watched as our own Indiana COY Rick and Debbie
Warmels, were chosen to be the Region D COY. They did a great job with their presentation. We had a great
time talking to Michigan Chapter W, they are a large active chapter. Kim got a few ideas from them that she
may try with our chapter. Smile! She knows you can't wait. :)
Ride ON!!
