August 2011 Newsletter REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS

Lockheed Martin's Workplace Security policy, CPS-565 is strictly enforced. One provision of the policy is a workplace free of weapons, which includes Firearms, Ammunition, Bows and Arrows. The club must emphasize this policy to our members. Additionally, a state issued CCW permit does not supersede nor over ride this LM policy. Members wanting to store firearms or archery equipment during the day ONLY, must contact Gene Adamson (303-971-1531) for access instructions.

Call Plant Protection (7-4646) if you have an incident or injury on the range.

ADDITIONAL REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS AND RANGE USERS

Please be sure to observe the speed limits on the range access road. Please be careful when driving on the roads, the horses may not move out of your way. Gate signs are in place indicating when horses are in the pasture – it they sign says “horses

in pasture” they need to be kept closed. New signs have been added to help make sure it is clear if the gate should be open or closed.

Archery Hunting boundaries have been significantly constrained due to hazardous propulsion testing – adherence to restrictions are MANDATORY – see Archery Section and your Archery representatives for more info!

Watch out for Rattlesnakes at the range!

PRESIDENT’S CORNER

We’re into the “dog days” of summer but nothing seems to be slowing down. The club events continue to draw more and more participants and the weekends are seeing lots of folks using the ranges. If you haven’t come out to one of the club events, you really ought to try to get out there. We have some great people running the events and everyone will happily answer questions that you might have.

Everyone seems to be getting comfortable with the operations at the range. One of the biggest issues that we are still having is people getting their gear out of the vehicle before checking in with the RSO. When the range is open, the VERY FIRST THING you must do is sign in with the RSO! However, if the range is not open, you can mow grass, set up for events, or any other non-shooting work without signing in, calling Plant Protection, or putting out range flags.

There also seem to be questions about whether there is a separate RSO for shotgun. The answer is NO! There is only one RSO for the whole range.

As we have pointed out before, weekday RSO support of the club events need to come from the events themselves. If there is more than one RSO, you can trade off so that both participate. The club is

SHFC August 2011 Newsletterworking to get additional RSO support scheduled. If any RSOs want to volunteer for weekday support, the help is very welcome.

Coming up on Sunday, August 21st, at the recreation area pavilion is the annual Bull Roast and Swap Meet. The cost will be $2 per head for delicious BBQ, baked beans, potato salad, and other goodies. In conjunction with the Bull Roast, we’re holding the Varmint Shoot on Saturday, August 20th. More details are contained later in this newsletter. The Arcade Shoot will also be held at the range the morning of Sunday, August 21st. Bring the kids out and try some of the events then come over to the Bull Roast. If you are like most of us, you’ve got plenty of stuff around that you are no longer using, bought too much of, or have lost interest in. There are lots of folks in the club who can make use of your items. Bring ‘em out to sell or swap for somebody else’s stuff!

We are continuing to make improvements to the ranges. You should be seeing some changes in the areas around the Pistol House and the RSO shed. There is now a shed for the target stands just outside the door to the pistol house. Please treat this just like the other sheds. Use a bit of care when taking target frames out or putting them back in. If they are damaged beyond repair but have some salvageable pieces, set them to the side. If they are completely trashed, put them in the dumpster. We are also working to provide additional parking. The grading is done but we need to put some crushed rock down before it can be used on a full time basis.

We finally have the voicemail ready to go on the phone in the Pistol House. You should be able to call (303) 971-3798 and listen to a recorded message concerning the status of the range and how long the RSO will be there. There will be detailed instructions on how to change the message posted by the phone. Hopefully this will provide a convenient way for folks to make sure they don’t drive all the way out to the range just to find out there is no RSO.

We still need to slow down on the road to the range. The road is very narrow in places and the vegetation growth is making it even narrower plus, with all the rain, we’ve got some pretty good washboards going. Please watch your speed! Nobody wants to see club spending money on speed bumps, additional gates, or any other sort of enforcement.

If you notice something at any of the ranges that is worn out, broken, or just needs some improvement (and is not an immediate safety hazard), please let me or any member of the Board of Directors know what is going on and we will do our best to address it. We want to continue to keep the ranges in good shape and make sure that everything is operating the way it is supposed to be.

We still need a lot more membership participation to run the club and the ranges with this new method of operation. We’ve identified even more new jobs that need doing. Keep an eye on the emails for some of these announcements! If you are really anxious to get some hours in, Norm Viste ([email protected]) is our Workbond Chair and has a list of tasks that need to be done.

SHFC August 2011 NewsletterBudget allocated for range improvements not already spent: new pistol house storage shed for target/stands to

alleviate the mess that typically accumulates in front of the benches; gravel/road base for filled area at 25 to 50 yard on pistol range; RSO shed roof repair.

Budget allocated for Bull Roast and related events. Control costs by asking for RSVP to get approximate head count to avoid over ordering food.

Minimal budget allocated for annual banquet. Plan to get private room at Country Buffet and have members pay own way to avoid club pre-paying for no shows like in recent year due to un-predictable attendance. Discussed other options such as advanced ticket sales.

Agree to set aside $5000 annual capitol reserve for future replacement of capitol facilities and equipment such as range buildings, trap and skeet machines etc. Agreement could not be reached on what should already be set in a reserve account for already depreciated structure and equipment.

Motion to approve 2011 budget $46,000. Vote 8 to 1 for. Motion passes. Publish budget in next newsletter.

By-laws revision discussion. Jim to make final changes and schedule a reading to members in time to allow vote at August 21st Bull Roast/members meeting (post meeting update – vote will occur at October membership meeting).

SUMMER 3-GUN

Summer 3-Gun this year will be held on the first and second off-Fridays of the month through October (August 5th and 19th , September 2nd and 16th, and October 14th and 28th). Start time of 3:00 pm with setup starting at 2:30 pm. For those new to 3-gun, it is similar to our Wednesday night practical pistol except we shoot the pistol, shotgun and semi-auto carbine/rifle for a combination of accuracy and speed. Since the Summer 3-Gun runs concurrent to practical pistol, we’ll have a heavier emphasis on the rifle and shotgun. Getting bored sitting at the bench shooting paper targets? Want to develop your action shooting skills, shoot on the move, handle shooting under physical and mental pressure, add new dimensions to your shooting skills, refine and test your shooting gear? Summer 3-gun is the game for you. Shooters of all levels are welcome. Summer 3-Gun’s goals are safety, skill development, fun and challenge. Shooters new to practical action shooting should call ahead to arrange a safety briefing. Contact Walter Tang at 303-977-6474 or email [email protected] to get on the mailing list. I usually send out the stage description before the shoot so you’ll know what to expect and how much ammo to bring.

SHFC August 2011 NewsletterPRACTICAL PISTOL - CLASSIC

Every Wednesday night through November 2nd, weather permitting. We will leave the gate area at 4:30 and try to fire first shots at 5:00. Every 4th Wednesday of the month is 22 pistol – no draw from holster – speed drill night. Every 3rd Wednesday one or more stages will be shot with a shotgun.Events are loosely based on USPSA/IDPA competition matches. Safe gun handling is stressed as it is everywhere on the SHFC range. Shooting from cover, around, over, through concealment, on the move, out of position, weak hand only, strong hand only, reloads, target identification drills, number of shots on target and voice commands are a few of the things covered (usually, not all on the same night!) Expect to shoot around 50 rounds for record each night. For more information call Mike S. 7-3478.

PRACTICAL PISTOL LADIES ONLY

Ladies Only group activities started on Monday, June 13th and goes every other Monday thru Sept. Meet at the entrance gate just off Wadsworth by about 4:30pm, then we will caravan up. Remember to bring your “semi-automatic” pistol, holster and 3 magazines, about 100 rounds, your eye and ear protection, pants, layered clothing (never sure about the weather until mid June), hat with a bill, flat soled shoes (no heels or wedgies), minimal jewelry (leave bracelets and other hanging bling in the car). All guests will have a new liability form to sign each visit. Remember to sign in at the RSO shed before going to the Pistol House. This should be a great year. Call Tom Frickell (720-202-6502 cell).

PRACTICAL PISTOL – LITE

Practical Pistol Lite started Monday, June 6th and goes every other Monday through September. For those of you who are new to Practical Pistol, this affords less experience shooters and opportunity to come out with a group of like-minded shooters and practice defensive skills. As always we will first and foremost focus on range safety. This year we are limiting participation to semi-automatics pistols in the effort to speed up the courses and get more shooting for everyone. Make sure your equipment (Pistol, Holster, Mag pouches) is in good repair and good working order. Carbine and shotgun nights will be less frequent this year to concentrate on pistol shooting and to allow everyone to get in more shooting. We meet at the gate around 4:15, and head to the range no later than 4:30. There has never been a better opportunity to tune your defensive pistol skills, and create a defensive mindset . Remember to sign in at the RSO shed before going to the Pistol House. Call Dave Norris at 303-204-6735 (cell) or Tom Frickell at 303-971-5493, or email at [email protected].

SUPER TUESDAY COMPETITION PISTOL (STCP)

This event is held every Tuesday night and is more closely aligned with USPSA style competition. However, we also plan to throw in tactical defensive scenarios once in a while to keep everyone on their toes. If you think you are interested in this type of competition contact Brian Sompayrac ([email protected])

The High Power season is in full swing, with many of the major matches completed, but there are still many opportunities to compete. The regional High Power competitive schedule is available from Dennis Casey (1-7197).

The SHFC High Power matches are conducted every “Track A” off-Friday, finishing by noon or 1 PM. We welcome all types of high power service or match rifles; some choose to shoot the Garand or M1A but the AR15 is the choice of most. The club has three AR15s, a Garand, two shooting mats, and a spotting scope with stand which are available to use during matches.

Check the club website for the regional schedule as well as articles for the aspiring High Power competitor. For further information, or to check out club equipment, please call Gene Adamson (1-1531) or Dennis Casey (1-7197) with any questions.

This activity is similar in format to the high-power service rifle competition and will follow the guidelines described in the Civilian Marksmanship Program guide.

To encourage participation, SHFC will allow ANY rifle capable of firing .22 long rifle ammunition, either bolt action, magazine fed, or, semi-automatic. Any type of sights or scopes of no more than 6 X are allowable. (Variable power scopes which go beyond 6X, can be set to 6X max.) The match will be fired at distances of 50 and 25 yards using paper targets and will consist of unlimited sighting shots followed by 60 shots for record in position stages of prone, sitting or kneeling, and standing.

CMP NEWS

DONATION INFORMATION (provided by David Potter):

The CMP program is no longer funded by the military and with the upcoming cuts it may be on the list.

For those that donate to the United Way you can designate your donation to go to the Civilian Marksmanship Program as discussed in this link: http://www.odcmp.com/Comm/FAQs.htm

In step 3 of the donation form, in the place for Agency name - write "Civilian Marksmanship Program." The address is 1401 Commerce Blvd., Anniston AL 36207.

Or you can donate directly to the CMP: Checks should be made out to CMP Donations, 1470 Sentinel Drive, Anniston AL, 36207.

The Skyline Hunting and Fishing club is an affiliated member with the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and, as such, is privilege to such benefits as direct purchase of surplus US military rifles, surplus ammunition, and competition shooting accessories. The History of the CMP dates back to 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt, and Federal legislation, enacted by the US Congress, established the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice to foster improved marksmanship among military personnel and civilians. President Roosevelt had considerable vision into what might lie ahead in the future of the United States in the creation of the CMP. The commissioning of a new service rifle from the Springfield Arsenal [The M1903 Springfield, and its new .30-06 cartridge, became the standard by which every service rifle and military ammunition would be judged and holds true even to this day], and the commissioning of naval forces which were needed to supply the allies some 11 years later as Europe erupted into what became known as “The Great War” to which the US entered in 1917.Until 1996 the CMP was administered by the US Army Office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship (DCM) at which time it became a federally chartered corporation known as The Corporation for the Promotion of Rifle Practice and Firearms Safety (CPRPFS) by act of Congress under title 36 of the US code of Federal regulations which now administers the CMP.So, what does all this mean to SHFC members? As an affiliated club with the CMP, the club and its members can purchase, directly from CMP, “retired” military rifles (no handguns) which the US government has declared surplus and which are transferred to the CMP for distribution. For history buffs and collectors, these firearms represent a tangible history of our nations rise to a democratic world power and how we used that power to defeat those nations which would choose to conquer, occupy, and enslave other peoples throughout Europe and Asia. The CMP, in carrying out its Congressional mandate, holds the National Matches at Camp Perry in Ohio every year which are open to any civilian who wishes to participate. There are many categories of marksmanship competitions both for service rifle and service pistol, for which marksmanship awards are presented to the top competitors. At SHFC, we hold service rifle and match rifle competitions, based on the CMP competition rules, every “off” Friday. In addition, several “off” Fridays are designated as Vintage Service Rifle matches where participants will compete with their M1903’s, M1 Garands, and foreign vintage service rifles.Corey Kroll, [email protected], is the SHFC coordinator and club liaison with the CMP and can help any member who wishes to make a purchase work through the paperwork. FISHING NEWS

Lockheed Martin Fly Fishing Challenge - Friday August 5th will be the first annual Lockheed Martin Fly Fishing Challenge. This is a two-person team event designed to prove who is the best trout catcher at LMCO.RSVP to [email protected] for more information. If you do not have a partner we will pair you up.

Tuesday Chatfield trips—I take people out on Chatfield every Tuesday in the club boats. This is a great way to learn how to fish Chatfield for Walleyes, Smallmouth, and Trout. It is also a great way to learn how the club boats work. I can also help you put the boats together to go out yourself if you wish.

Fishing Accessories—the club recently purchased a new trolling motor and fishfinder for the club boats. These can be checked out with the boats. Also, a portable pontoon boat was recently donated to the club. This boat works great for an evening trip to the Chatfield ponds or a day trip to the mountains. The pontoon is checked out through me, not Bob Cohan.

New Reloading Tool & Additions to the SHFC Reference Library

The new reloading tool is a RCBS stuck case remover kit.  If you full length resize your bottleneck rifle or pistol cases and forget to lube the case before sizing, or don’t use enough lube, you are very likely to get the case stuck in the die.  You’ll notice this as you try to remove the case with great difficulty and the shellholder rips the rim off.  Now you are officially stuck.  Been there, done that.  At this point you may want to try to remove the decapping rod assembly out of the top of the die.  If you are successful, hammer the stuck case out with a long punch.  Use a punch or steel rod that is small enough to slide past the case neck and long enough to reach the web of the case plus a few more inches to push the case all the way out.  Hint: don’t try this with a section of cleaning rod because when it bends or the ends are damaged from the pounding you’ll need a new rod too.  However, it is extremely unlikely that the decap rod assembly will come out, so you’ll need to call me then to get this kit.   BTW, if you stick a straight walled case, the decapping rod assembly will easily unscrew out and the hammer / punch method works quite well. I just added two DVDs for shotgunners titled, Complete System for Successful Shooting by Dan Carlisle and Guide to Perfection in Sporting Clays by George Digweed.  Remember the feeling you get when you perfectly execute a shot? When, seemingly without conscious effort, everything happens just right all by itself?  Dan Carlisle, one of America's top sporting shooters and instructors and a guy who has devoted years to understanding the mechanics and science of shooting, acknowledges that special feeling as the shooter's ultimate reward. He calls it "the magic in the moment." Dan has experienced a lot of magic moments in his career, from his world-records and Olympic medal to the many competition wins in trap, skeet, sporting clays and FITASC. The long journey and countless thousands of targets he's shot, have done more than bring him a closet full of awards. They've crystallized his instructional process to the point where he can teach just about any shooter to better himself. In fact

SHFC August 2011 NewsletterDan was voted the shooting instructor of the year in 1999. Dan teaches more a practical system than theoretical methodology. It blends basic geometry with speed to give the shooter a "formula" for breaking targets. In this video, Dan will help you develop a complete system for successful shooting and you too will enjoy more "magic moments."  George Digweed is without a doubt the most accomplished shotgunner in the world today. He has won every major title Sporting Clays Shooting has to offer. In addition to numerous English and British Open wins he has four times been European FITASC Sporting Champion and he has won the World title an unprecedented four times. At the 1999 World Sporting Clays Championship he shot the first 100 straight in a World Championship. His over-all score of 194x200 also set a new world record.  This long awaited video was taped at the National Shooting Complex in San Antonio, Texas, on the grounds of the 1999 World Sporting Clays Championship. George explains his style of shooting, from stance to how he obtains lead. George shoots eleven different stations and explains each one in detail. Each target is shot using Sunrise Productions EYE-CAM, which allows you to see what George is seeing as the shot is taken.

LEGISLATIVE ACTION NEWS

TIME TO CLOSE DOWN THE ATF, NewsWithViews.com, June 25, 2011Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) has shone a spotlight on the criminal behavior of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, commonly referred to as the ATF. At a hearing last week, Issa took on Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich by asking him: “Who authorized this program that was so felony stupid it got people killed.” Chairman Issa started off the interrogation of Weich by holding up one of the pages that the ATF had provided his committee. It was completely blackened, one of hundreds that had been totally redacted by the agency. (You can see a picture of this on GOA’s website.) Issa told Weich that this was unacceptable and that he was tired of the lack of cooperation at the Department of Justice.View the entire article at http://www.newswithviews.com/Pratt/larry119.htm

Another murder linked to ATF's Fast and Furious, azcentral.com, June 24, 2011A second murder has been linked to the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearm's bungled Operation Fast and Furious, where federal agents stood by as weapons were smuggled south of the border.Mario Gonzalez Rodriguez was the brother of Chihuahua's former attorney general. He was kidnapped last October and found dead in November. When Mexican police arrested the murder suspects, they seized assault weapons. A congressional source tells 12 News that some of those weapons were part of the ATF's fast and furious operation.View the entire article at http://www.azcentral.com/12news/news/articles/2011/06/24/20110624ATF-gunsd-smuggling-062411.html

Smuggled, stolen and homemade, guns flood Egypt’s streets, almasryalyoum.com, June 27, 2011A new conversation has been taking place around Egypt for the past five months, one that rarely came up before. How do you acquire a firearm? With rising crime rates and an ongoing security vacuum since 28 January, the smuggling, manufacturing, and purchasing of weapons is on the rise. The insecurity has generated new clients and markets in a country where previously one rarely heard of civilians carrying personal weapons. Fast and Furious Fiasco: Time to Abolish the ATF, American Thinker, June 26, 2011Voltaire observed "It's a good thing to kill an admiral now and then to encourage the others." This observation inspires me to suggest that when an agency carries out such a bit of idiotic malfeasance as the ATF's operation "Fast and Furious" with the cooperation of agents at all levels of the spectrum, an operation which resulted , among other things in the murder of a U.S. customs agent and prominent relative of a Mexican official, it's time to dissolve the operation and dismiss all of its employees.

NRA Celebrates Resignation of Brady Pres. Paul Helmke, opposingviews.com, June 26, 2011Back in 2006, we reported that "transition" seemed like a good word to describe the Brady Campaign's trials and tribulations over the years. Based upon focus group polls, the group changed its moniker from Handgun Control, Inc., to the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, but that change in semantics didn't achieve the desired results. NRA Boss: Obama's Gone in 2012, U.S. News and World Report, June 27, 2011The National Rifle Association has a rich history that goes back to shortly after the Civil War, when in 1871, Union veterans created it to train city-slicker troops who couldn't hit the side of a barn with their musket shots. But as the 4 million-strong group readies its fight to oust President Obama in 2012, it has to go back only 11 years for a battle plan. That's when the Second Amendment advocates mounted their biggest political effort ever to defeat then Vice President Al Gore by targeting key pro-gun Democratic states he needed to beat George W. D.C. v. Heller a Hollow Victory for Gun Lobby?, opposingviews.com, June 28, 2011When the Supreme Court, three years ago, issued its landmark Second Amendment ruling in District of Columbia v. Heller, Wayne LaPierre of the National Rifle Association said it was only the “opening salvo” in a long legal war to use the courts to dismantle the nation’s gun laws. SHFC August 2011 NewsletterWhat’s the answer to failed government? More government! In the June Issue of Townhall Magazine, I wrote Misfire: Obama's Scandalous Secret Gun Control Agenda, about how Operation Fast and Furious would result in calls for more gun control and I questioned whether officials in the Obama Justice Department purposely allowed thousands of semi-automatic weapons to flow into the hands of dangerous drug cartels in order to meet President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder’s goal of re-instating the ban on assault rifles and other forms of harsh gun control.View the entire article at http://townhall.com/columnists/katiepavlich/2011/06/30/dems_call_for_more_gun_control_in_light_of_operation_fast_and_furious/page/full/

SPD rifle flap punctures public perception about cops as gun safety experts, Seattle Gun Rights Examiner, June 29, 2011The on-going flap over a semiautomatic AR-15 type rifle left unattended on the trunk of a Seattle police car Monday night just may become the pin that punctures a public perception – especially when it comes to the legislative arena – that police are the “experts” on all things firearms-related.View the entire article at http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-seattle/spd-rifle-flap-punctures-public-perception-about-cops-as-gun-safety-experts

SHFC August 2011 NewsletterCherry picking the Constitution, United Liberty, July 5, 2011The Huffington Post has a piece about how Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner plans to use the Fourteenth Amendment as at least part of his argument regarding the debt ceiling. Chicago Plays Tricks With Gun Rights, Gather, July 5, 2011The Chicago City Council is up to their old tricks again as they passed an ordinance that allows for gun ranges in the city, but only in very limited places. The ordinance restricts gun ranges to areas zoned for manufacturing, but also prohibits gun ranges within 1000 feet of a school, park, place of worship, day care center, liquor store, library, museum, or residential district.Despite spending millions of the taxpayer's dollars on fruitless attempts to prohibit guns in the city, the mayor and aldermen of Chicago are inviting another round of lawsuits and court battles. Todd Vandermyde, the Illinois legislative liaison for the National Rifle Association (NRA), condemned the city's blatant attempt to undermine the decision of the courts stating, "obviously they haven't learned anything from court rulings and our tenacity."View the entire article at http://politics.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474979569784

Liberals don't let facts obscure their talking points, The Tennessean, July 6, 2011No one is more of a master of political talking points than President Barack Obama. Remember “shovel-ready projects”? These were construction projects where the shovels were supposed to start digging the moment the government gave them the “stimulus” money. Two years later, Obama can joke about the fact that the shovels were not as ready as he thought. In reality, the shovels were never ready.
