“The City That Never Sleeps” (New York), “The Eternal City” (Rome), “The Square Mile” (London); monikers that are renowned with some of the most famous cities in the world. But they all fall in comparison to “The Enlightened City” - Madinah, the second home of our beloved prophet (saw). When Rasulullah (saw) migrated to Madinah, the Ansar (the people of Madinah) embraced him with open and loving arms, giving him and his Sahaabah full access, entitlement and freedom to everything in the city.

Anas ibn Malik (rad) narrates that Rasulullah (saw) said: "O Allah! Bestow on Medina twice the blessings You bestowed on Makkah." (Bukhari)

A Word with Shaikh Mufti Muhammad Sadek

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my late father, Haji Muhammad Aftab Miah, who passed away Sunday 29th November 2015 in Bangladesh at the blessed age of 91. Before passing, Allah (swt) gave him the ability to make dua for his family while they were present and he mentioned each one of them by their names. He also made Taubah & Istighfaar and recited the Kalima aloud twice before returning to the mercy of Allah (swt).

He arrived in England in the mid 1950s and has been in Luton for around 40 years and is fondly known by communities up and down the country, which included people from all races and backgrounds, particularly for selling watches – he was affectionately coined “The Watch Man.” He had worked in Vauxhall for 25 years, as well as working in blade & steel factories totalling 23 years. He has left behind numerous Huffaz, some of whom are studying to become Ulama, as well as myself, who was fortunate enough to become a Mufti and Qari. He is one of the founders of Jamiatul Uloom Al Islamia.

We pray that Allah (swt) elevates his status in Jannah, enlightens his grave with Noor, accepts his righteous deeds and forgives his shortcomings. Ameen.

The brotherhood of these people as a community is something to strive for. They would always help Rasulullah (saw), as well as each other, at every opportunity – their title of “Ansar” meaning “the helpers”.

They aided him in constructing the beautiful Masjid An-Nabawi. During the construction, he would tell the Ansar to work with him and not be shy because of their overwhelming respect for him. They shared all their wealth, land, houses and belongings with Rasulullah (saw) and his Sahaabah. Rasulullah (saw) established a brotherhood between 'Abdur-Rahman and Sa’ad bin Ar-Rabi’. Sa’ad said to 'Abdur-Rahman, "I am the richest of all the Ansar, so I want to divide my property (between us).”

The Jamia community share some resemblance with that of Madinah. During the month of Ramadhan, many families and organisations cater for iftar by supplying food for the community and the underprivileged. Much like the Ansar, Jamiatul Uloom Al Islamia was reconstructed and refurbished by the local community, giving their physical and financial support, along with their precious and invaluable Duas.

We here at Jamiatul Uloom Al Islamia aim to follow the exemplary legacy of the Ansar by engaging with the community, informing the community on local issues (e.g. newsletter), involving the community in social events (e.g. sponsored walks), providing academic & Islamic learning and providing them with various other services (e.g. clean-up projects).

Three Brothers

Once Rasulullah (saw) asked the Sahaabah: "Do you know in what relation your relatives, your wealth, and your deeds stand to you?" The Sahaabah expressed their desire to know about it.

Rasulullah (saw) replied: "It can be likened to a person having three brothers. When he is about to die, he calls one of his brothers to him, and asks him, 'Brother! Do you know what plight is mine? What help can you render me at this juncture?' That brother replies, ‘I shall call the doctor to you, nurse you and attend upon you. And when you are dead, I shall bathe you, enshroud you, and carry you to the grave. Then I shall pray for you after you are buried.’ This brother is his kith and kin.

“He puts the same question to the second brother, who delivers himself like this: 'I shall remain with you as long as you are alive. No sooner you are dead than I shall betake myself to someone else.' This brother is his worldly wealth.

“He then questions the last brother in the same strain, who makes response: 'I shall not forsake you even in your grave and I shall accompany you into that place of utter solitude. When your deeds are weighed in the balance, I shall forthwith lend my weight to the scale of your good deeds and weigh it down.' This brother is the personification of his good deeds.

“Now, tell me, which of the brothers you regard to be the most useful to the person?”

The Sahaabah replied: “Oh Rasulullah (saw)! The last brother is really the most useful to him. There is no doubt about it. The other two brothers were of no avail."

Anti-bullying week is an annual event in November which aims to raise awareness around the bullying of children and young people, in schools and elsewhere, and to highlight ways of preventing and responding to it.

During this week, members of staff conducted a whole school workshop on bullying and how to prevent it, including what to do if you are getting bullied, what it causes, online safety and what support is available. Students also produced art work and designed signs to illustrate how our school is against bullying.

Interfaith week highlights the good work done by local interfaith and faith based groups and organisations. It celebrates diversity and commonality.

Members of the student council delivered presentations on different religions. We learnt about their customs, rituals, special days and occasions, clothing and much more. We also visited different religious and cultural centres where we learnt what they do there and there religious practises.

Everyone learnt a lot throughout the week.

In our Deen a great importance is given to Tahaarah (purity). Actions of worship such as Salaah, touching the Quran, Tawaaf of the Ka’bah and Sajda Tilawah cannot be performed without gaining ritual purity, i.e. wudhu.

In wudhu there are 4 compulsory actions, as Allah states in the Quran: “Oh you who believe, when you intend to perform Salah then wash your face and your hand including your elbows and do masah of your head and wash your feet including the ankles.” (Surah Maida)

From this verse, we understand there are 3 parts of the body that need to be washed for wudhu: the face, the hands and the feet, while the head will be wiped. Now the question is; is it permissible to wipe on leather socks?

The ruling of the Quran is absolute and whatever ruling is established from the Quran must be followed. It cannot be changed without any other evidence which is of the strength of the Quran.

However, if the evidence is as strong as the Quran e.g. “Tawaatur,” overwhelming narrators are narrating a ruling of Deen which makes it as strong as the Quran, because the Quran has been passed down to us by Tawaatur without any doubt.

Wiping of the leather socks is permissible and this is because the rule of wiping of the leather socks with certain conditions has been passed down by Tawaatur, hence a person is allowed to wipe the

leather socks provided that he has worn them upon completion of wudhu. Wiping the leather socks has been narrated by none other than 80 Sahaabah.

A further question arises: What is the ruling of wiping on normal cotton socks? This will be explained in another issue, along with how to perform wiping of leather socks, insha Allah.

Shakespearean & Elizabethan London by Tanveer Lais

Jamia’s First Sponsored Walk by Zacharya Elias Sakoumi

As part of our GCSE English Literature studies, year 10 students partook in a school trip to London on Thursday 26th November. We visited London Dungeons, where we gained exposure to the social, cultural and historical lifestyle of Victorian London, enhancing our understanding of the novella "The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde." We also visited Shakespeare’s Globe, a reconstructed version of the original Globe Theatre of William Shakespeare. We had the opportunity to study the life of William Shakespeare, understand the London he was living in and gain a feel of what performing at the Globe Theatre was like.

The trip also served as an enrichment session, as we travelled via the London Underground and had to plan and navigate routes to our various destinations, giving us real life experiences. The day ended with a visit to Westfield Shopping Centre

In London Dungeons, we learnt about the dark history of London and the many infamous bloodthirsty villains, including Jack the Ripper and Sweeney Todd. We also learnt about Victorian crime and judiciary – quite ghastly and barbaric!

After a “thrilling” experience, we were on route to William Shakespeare’s Globe theatre. On the way we saw many landmarks such as St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Millennium Bridge. A long walk deep in the city of London brought us to Shakespeare’s Globe, performing our Zuhr and Asr Salaah before and after the tour.

On the tour, we learnt that it was not the original Globe theatre. It was burned down twice and the third refurbished theatre is what we see today. It was an enlightening experience as we had the opportunity to experience how a play would be performed and received in Shakespeare’s time. We took some pictures from different views in the theatre and made our way to Westfield.

Upon arrival, we prayed our Maghrib Salaah and

spent some time shopping and browsing around different stores. We worked up quite an appetite so it was only fitting that we ended the day with a well deserved meal. I had a delicious spicy lamb with fried onion pilaff and a scrumptious slice of chocolate fudge cake.

Thirteen hours of travelling, touring, learning and enjoyment concluded in a safe arrival at Luton station. It was an awesome day and an experience that will live with us for many years.

Some participants were a bit tired and struggled to finish the walk but at the end everyone finished together. Alhamdulillah, thanks to our sponsors, we raised over £700 pounds which gets us closer to getting the student lockers. All in all, everyone had a good time and a lot of money was raised for a good cause. Insha Allah, in the near future, we plan on having longer walks and different types of sponsored events such as a sponsored run and a sponsored bike ride.

Alhamdulillah, Jamiatul Uloom Al Islamia’s first ever sponsored road walk took place on Saturday 21st of October 2015. All participants, including teachers, took one route and Alhamdulillah everyone enjoyed it thoroughly. Part of our route consisted of a walk through Old Bedford Road in which all participants were given time to relax and spend time in Wardown Park. We took some pictures and moved on through the rest of the route.

Zikr After Salaah by Aaqib Akhtar

Certain actions we perform in this beautiful Deen of Islam can take its toll on us; be it financial or physical, even though we hope to be rewarded immensely in the hereafter and the rewards of the hereafter surpass any form of worldly hardship.

Fasting has a physical toll as we are restricted from food and drink for a prolonged period. Zakaat has a financial toll as we are spending 2.5% of our savings. Hajj has a financial and physical toll as we are spending thousands of pounds and will have to undergo physical hardships.

A Sahaabi once came to Rasulullah (saw) and said he is too weak to go in the path of Allah (swt) and too miserly to spend in the way of Allah (swt). Rasulullah (saw) advised him to perform Zikr.

Zikr can be done anywhere and everywhere; while we’re walking, while we’re talking, while we’re sitting, while we’re standing, while we’re eating, while we’re working, while we’re cooking, while we’re shopping, while we’re playing, while at home, while at school, while at work; anywhere we are, we can perform Zikr of Almighty Allah (swt) (except in the toilet.)

Here is a prescription of some Azkaar we can

perform after every Salaah. Immediately after giving salaam:

Recite: “Allahu Akbar.”

Recite: “Astaghfirullah” three times.

Recite: “Allahumma antas salaam, Wa minkas salaam, Tabaarakta Ya Zhal Jalaali wal Ikraam.”

Recite: “Allahumma a’inni a’laa zikrika wa shukrika wa husni i’baadatik.”

Recite: “SubhanAllah” 33 times.

Recite: “Alhamdulillah” 33 times.

Recite: “Allahu Akbar” 33 times.

Recite: “Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulk wa lahul-hamd wa huwa ‘ala kulli shay in qadeer.” There are many other forms of Zikr that can be

performed after Salaah. These simple supplications are light on the tongue but will weigh heavy on the scales, insha Allah.

The Miswaak by Abu Numaan Jafor

Islam is not only a religion but a complete way of life which teaches us good manners and the aspects of being a good human being. Cleanliness in Islam is given a lot of importance, as Rasulullah (saw) stated in a famous Hadith, “Purification is half of faith”. (Muslim)

The use of Miswaak holds great importance in Islam. Apart from keeping the body clean, Islam teaches us to take special care of our mouths in order to keep away from diseases and also to make our breath smell pleasant so that it doesn’t become a cause of discomfort to others.

Since the teeth are the gates to our mouths they should always be clean and shinning as it adds beauty to a Muslim’s smile and face.

Hadith Rasulullah (saw) states, "Miswaak is a thing

that pleases the Merciful Lord." (Bukhari) Abu Ayyub Ansari (rad) narrates that four

things are the Sunnah of all the prophets (as): circumcision, use of fragrance, use of Miswaak and marriage.

Abu Hurairah (rad) narrated that Rasulullah (saw) said, “Was it not for my fear of imposing a difficulty on my Ummah, I would have ordered that the Miswaak be used for every Salaah.” (Bukhari)

Abu Nu’aym narrates on the authority of Jaabir (rad) that Rasulullah (saw) said, “To perform 2 Raka’ats after performing Miswaak is more exalted than 70 Raka’ats which is performed without performing Miswaak.” (Al-Targhib wat Tarheeb)

It facilitates digestion

It restores the stomach’s health

It brings an end to phlegm

It multiplies good deeds

It pleases Allah (swt) and delights the angels The greatest benefit is that it reminds the user to recite the Kalimah at the time of death.
