Introduction

A History – With a purposeGunnebo Lifting, part of Gunnebo Industrier AB, a public listed company on the Stockholm stock market has more than 100 years of manufacturing experience, having started industrial chain production as far back as the late19th century.

With 4 manufacturing plants in Sweden and manufacturing facilities in another 4 countries, Gunnebo Lifting operates companies in a total of 12 countries with further acquisitions planned.

Innovation – With a purposeThroughout its history Gunnebo Lifting has been responsible for many of the technological advances in lifting products and we have an ongoing commitment to continually investigate new ideas that will facilitate safer, quicker, easier and more cost effective lifting procedures.Recent examples of this have been our GrabiQ Grade 10 range, which features integral shortening, reduced number of components and more flexible use of chain slings, and our Flexileg / Quickpin system which allows our chain slings to be provided in a modular kit form which can then cover a much wider set of applications. This latter system has already generated much interest in the crane hire industry and with Fire and Rescue services.

Quality – With a purposeSince the beginning, Gunnebo Lifting has maintained that the quality and the safety of it’s products are the number one priority at all times. All of the 4 Swedish plants are ISO9000 and EN14000 certified and we hold DNV approval for many of our products. Our Ramnas plant, near to Stockholm, includes our Gunnebo Training School, which is responsible for the training of, not only our subsidiaries, but also many of our dealers, to the very highest level possible.

A Catalogue – With a purposeWe are very proud to introduce to you our first combined catalogue in Australia. This catalogue consolidates our previous Classic, GrabiQ and LiftiQ catalogues as well as all of our smaller publications.Featuring detailed technical specifications of all of our products, it is designed to provide a complete lifting guide for our dealers as well as their own end user customers.

A Range – With a purposeOver recent years, due to increased demand for supplier accreditation and approval there has been a move by many companies to reduce the number of their suppliers and, to facilitate this, for manufacturers to provide more complete ranges. Gunnebo Lifting has striven to do this by seeking to create a comprehensive range offering a “one-stop” supply of lifting, pulling, winching and lashing products.

Gunnebo Lifting – GrabiQ The all-inclusive chain sling system for coupling, shortening and lifting in grade 10.

Our GrabiQ sling system is designed to improve safety and make your lifting as quick and easy as possible. GrabiQ means:

components.

no extra components.

One of the main advantages of the GrabiQ system is that the work involved in connecting, adjusting and checking the lift takes much less time and can be carried out more easily. The integral shortening function, for example, means that a four-part sling which previously required up to thirteen different top components now needs only three in the GrabiQ system.

The German Berufsgenossenschaften (BG) launched, at the beginning of 2004, a new specification for Grade 10 components, Gunnebo Lifting has passed this new specification and was one of the first companies in the world to do so.

As with our Classic system, all components and every link of chain are proof load tested and inspected. For full details please refer to pages 18 and 19.

Design with a purpose

The option of shortening is always there.

Every chain leg can be instantly altered from straight lift to a loop sling by using the shortening pocket.

With C-lok as terminal fitting the sling can be altered between choke hitch, basket hitch and leg extension with flattened links.

With the flexibility of the GrabIQ system a number of different lifting solutions can be solved using the same GrabiQ sling.

The Midgrab allows instantmounting, positioning andshortening on any part ofthe chain.

Built in shorteningfunction in theconnector.

7

Oversized or squared shaped master links are ideal for use with large crane hooks (e.g. DIN15401).

The roundsling hooks are colour coded in order to match the corresponding size of the roundsling. Red=5T / Yellow=3T / Green=2T / Violet=1T.

The C-parts are designed to allow for correct size of wire rope thimble to be fitted into the eye. This opens the way for new ideal combinations of chain and wire rope slings.

The GrabiQ system has been designed with special care so that it should be easy to use correctly.

All clevis type connections are snugly matched to the correct size of chain and pin dimension, thereby eliminating any incorrect assembly.

All GrabiQ components are uniformly marked with the equivalent chain size, grade, traceability code, manufacturers name and designation, for positive identification.

Mastergrab single type MG and duo type MGD have the same length, which ensure an equal leg length if they are united at the top end into a common shackle or crane hook.

With the GrabiQ design, the outgoing chains from the shortening pocket are allowed on either side for loading, thereby eliminating misuse.

By using two extra chain links, CL and CLD will have the same effective length as CG and CGD.

added value

EconomicalThe cost calculation of lifting equipment is not only limited to the cost of the original purchase, the total cost during the entire lifecycle should also be taken into consideration.

With the radically engineered GrabiQ system the number of unique components has been reduced, which means:

time.

inspect.

slings required to a minimum.

By using the unique features of the GrabiQ range, Gunnebo Lifting has increased the flexibility even further. GrabiQ FlexiLeg is a flexible solution with instant leg shift, where one single master link and a combination of five legs replace ten legs with the traditional system.

QuickPin - For flexible exchange of sling legs.- Instant close/open function- Fits all GrabiQ C-connectors

ID tag in stainless steel, specially designed for the GrabiQ FlexiLeg system.

The reverse side contains information about the sling manufacture and the users reg. number.

The double latch BK-hook with a recessed trigger - The safest self-locking hook in the market. Our latest development in the BK family is our new BKD hook. The innovative and patented solution for the offshore oil & gas industry, is as simple as it is good. If for any reason the latch accidentally opens, either by a direct hit on the trigger or if the trigger is worn, the extra latch keeps the load in place.

Rotating lifting points– This patented new design makes the RLP suitable where conventional lifting points may be inadequate. The RLP range can be

used, not only as lifting points but also as lashing or towing points.

– Features of the RLP range are:

– Dismountable open D-rings which allow connection of a round sling, masterlink or hook directly on to the RLP

– Hexagon head tightening bolts for easy assembly / disassembly using a normal wrench or torque wrench

– Full 360° rotation and full 180° articulation

– Forged in Grade 10 material gives higher working load limits than Grade 8 lifting points and DIN580 eyebolts

Classic chain and components – the original from Gunnebo Lifting

The Classic system from Gunnebo Lifting is more than just another chain sling system. It is a total concept for all types of heavy lifting applications. Classic chain and components represents one of the largest and most diverse product ranges in the world, designed to give maximum flexibility and more options to meet any lifting situation involving slings – whether chain, steel wire rope or soft slings. Classic chain and components are made from special quenched and tempered alloy steel, thus guaranteeing very high strength, low weight, high wear resistance and ultra-long life.

Identification

All Classic lifting components are uniformly marked with the equivalent chain size, the grade, the manufacturer’s designation and name for positive identification.

Our aim is to clearly show, at a glance, the marking differences between Gunnebo Lifting original Classic components and copies (see picture below for characteristics of marking Gunnebo Lifting components). Remember – it is not only the yellow colour that symbolises a Gunnebo Lifting Classic product. Be sure you receive the original – be sure that you get a Gunnebo Lifting Classic product!

Every single component and every link of chain is proof loaded and inspected.

The Manufacturing Proof Force (MPF) for the relevant size of the Classic component is applied and removed. The dimensions after proof loading shall not alter from the original dimensions within the tolerances prescribed in our specifications and in the international standards.

The Breaking Force (BF) for each Classic component and size is verified. The verified value shall be at least equal to the Minimum Breaking Force (MBF) value. The MBF value is equal to the Working Load Limit (WLL) multiplied by the safety factor.

Fatigue testing in pulsator testing machines simulates the very toughest of operational conditions.

Classic safe use and maintenance

Extreme temperature conditionsThe in-service temperature of the whole or part of the chain sling affects the WLL as follows:

Temp. of sling (°C) Reduction of WLL–40 to 200 None

Upon return to normal temperature, the sling reverts to its full capacity within the above temperature range. Chain slings should not be used above or below these temperatures.

Surface treatmentPlease note that hot-dip galvanizing or plating should not be performed outside the control of Gunnebo Lifting.

Asymmetric loading conditionsFor unequally loaded chain legs we recommend that the WLL is determined as follows.

3 and 4-leg slings are calculated as per the corresponding 1-leg sling. (If it is certain that the 2-legs are equally carrying the major part of the load, then calculation can be as per the corresponding 2-leg sling.

Severe environmentChain and components must not be used in alkaline (>pH10) or acidic conditions (<pH6).Comprehensive and regular examination must be carried out when used in severe or corrosion inducing environments. If in doubt consult your Gunnebo Lifting dealer.

General advice

to the information on the certificate. (The following ID-tag information is compulsory: WLL. number of chain legs, nominal size (mm), individual ID mark, manufacturer, CE marking and year of manufacture).

appropriate information and training.

Protect yourself and others

damage or deterioration.Never use a worn out or damaged sling.

ready to move and that no obstacles will obstruct the lift.

Check the conformity of the load with the WLL of the ID tag for the specific working configuration. Never use a sling without a legible valid ID tag!

Method of connectionA chain sling is usually attached to the load and the crane by means of terminal fittings such as hooks, links, etc.Chain should be without twists or knots and if the chain leg needs length adjustment then a shortening device should be used. The load should be seated well down in the terminal fitting, never on the point or wedged in the opening. The terminal fitting should be free to incline in any direction.

The chain may be passed under or through the load to form a choke hitch or basket hitch, the chain should be allowed to assume its natural angle and should not be hammered down.

– Where choke hitch is employed the WLL of the chain sling should be

choker hook is used).

Endless chain slings should be rated in the same way as a 2-legged sling.Ensure the chain is protected with suitable padding if there are sharp edges (R<2 x chain diam.).When lifting with chain directly on lugs, the leg diameter should be> 3 x the pitch of the chain, otherwise the WLL must be reduced by

AssemblyG-link assembly:1. Join the link halves2. Place the retaining bush between

them.3. Insert the load pin and ensure that

the load pin snaps into place.

BL-link / Clevis assembly:1. Assemble the component, chain

and load pin.2. Fit the retaining pins.3. Make sure that the load pins are

properly secured by the retaining pins.

MaintenancePeriodic thorough examination must be carried out at least every 12 months or more frequently according to statutory regulations, type of use and past experience.1. Overloaded chain slings must be taken out of service

immediately.2. Chain and components including load pins which have been

damaged, deformed, elongated, bent or showing signs of cracks or gouges should be replaced. Grind off small, sharp cuts and burrs. Additional testing by magnetic particle inspection and/or proof load at max. 2 x WLL may be carried out.

3. Check the function of latches, triggers and retaining pins / bushes, replace when necessary. Always use Gunnebo Lifting original spare parts.

4. Max. clearance between hook and latch.Note: For a Griplatch hook measure the difference between point A with unloaded spring and point A when the latch is pressed against the hook (clearance B not applicable).

Wirelock

Wirelock is a unique socketing compound for use with wire ropes. It is quite simply the best socketing solution for safety, dependability and unparalleled fatigue performance. Wirelock started life in 1962 and has been in general use for more than 30 years.

Wirelock is the original cold socketing compound and, therefore, eliminates the hazards of working with a molten metal, allowing socketing to be done on site in virtually all weather conditions. It is extremely difficult to produce a void free socket when using molten metal, but extremely easy to produce a voidfree socket using Wirelock. This ensures a quality socket every time.

Full technical details of how to use Wirelock can be found in the Wirelock Technical Manual which is available upon request.
