Abstract: Research files, manuscripts, photos, posters, artifacts, and secondary material related to circus

performer Clyde Beatty.

Biography: Clyde Beatty (1903-1965) was a twentieth century celebrity chiefly famous for being a lion

and tiger trainer in the circus.

Clyde Beatty was born in Bainbridge, Ohio on 10 June 1903. He joined the circus at eighteen, initially

working as a cage cleaner but quickly achieving fame as a big cat trainer. Beatty worked with up to 40

lions and tigers of both sexes in the cage at the same time, and was one of the most well-known circus

performers of his day. Beatty appeared in films from the 1930s to the 1950s, and on television until the

1960s (including such cultural mainstays as The Ed Sullivan Show). The Clyde Beatty Show, a syndicated

radio series loosely based on events in Beatty's own life, aired from 1950 to 1952. Beatty owned his own

circus show for a time. Later the Beatty Show name was leased by the parties who had acquired the

show at bankruptcy, who eventually also bought the Cole Bros. Show title (which had been unused for

several years) and added it to the Beatty title to form the title Clyde Beatty-Cole Bros. Circus.

Beatty married three times over the course of his life, first to Ernestine Pegg of Peru, Indiana. The two

had one child, Joyce Ferguson, also of Peru, Indiana. On 16 September 1933 Beatty married his second

wife, Harriet Evans, who had joined the circus several years earlier. Harriet went on to become an

animal trainer in her own right, and had her own act beginning in 1935. Their marriage lasted until

Harriet's death in 1950. Beatty married a third time, to Jane Abel of San Antonio, and the two had one

child, Clyde Beatty Jr. Beatty died of cancer at age 62 on 19 July 1965.

Appendix 1: Winter Quarters

Late in 1944 Beatty bought Wallace Bros, which was wintered in York, South Carolina. After 1945, the

only season of the Clyde Beatty Circus on trucks, it went to Macon, Georgia, as Floyd King had bought it

and renamed it King Bros.

Then Beatty went to El Paso where Art Concello's 1945 Russell Bros. Pan Pacific was wintered. They

changed the title to Clyde Beatty Circus and opened there in the spring of 1946, getting to the West

Coast as quickly as possible. The show made excellent profits in Canada and Beatty bought Concello out

after the successful season. Beatty took the show to Nacogdoches, Texas to winter 1946-47.

The show wintered in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1947-48.

The show wintered in El Monte, California in 1948-49 and 1949-50

The show wintered in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1950-51 (Harriet had just died and Beatty wanted to close

and winter as soon as possible and Shreveport was close).

The show returned to El Monte, California to winter 1951-52

The show wintered in Newhall, California for the 1952-53 season, a fact often forgotten by Beatty fans

and scholars.

The show wintered in Deming, New Mexico for the 1953-54, 1954-55 and 1955-56 seasons. The show

then returned to Deming after an early closing for re-organization under McClosky and Kernan, and

reopened later and wintered in Deland, Florida.

Appendix 2: Clyde Beatty and Cole Bros. titles

From 1935-1938 Clyde Beatty worked for the Cole Bros., and sometimes the advertising would read

"Cole Bros-Clyde Beatty Circus."

Beatty went out on his own in 1945 in a truck show and began using the title Clyde Beatty Circus. He

continued using that title on a railroad show (which he operated under a partnership with Art Concello)

beginning in 1946.

In mid-1956 Beatty lost ownership of the show, but stayed on as a feature act under the new owner.

The Cole Bros. Circus had gone out of business in the early 1950s, and in 1959 the new owners of the

Beatty show bought the inactive Cole Bros. title and began calling their show the "Clyde Beatty-Cole

Bros. Circus."

While the combined titles were used for many years (even after Beatty's death), no formal merger of

the two circuses ever occurred. In recent years the show has just used the title Cole Bros. Circus.
