PRESENTATION The academic staff of the Department of Humanities (DILBEC) are committed individuals with a highly qualified national and international reputation. Their ultimate aim is to create experts in the field of cultural heritage as well as train teachers of humanities subjects in the Italian lower and upper secondary school system. The Department’s academic programme offers:

- two Bachelor’s Degrees (First Level Cycle) - two Master’s Degrees (Second Level Cycle)

The Bachelor’s Degree Courses are: 1) Conservation and Cultural Heritage 2) Humanities

The Master’s Degree Courses are: 1) Archaeology and Art History 2) Classical and Modern Philology There are also two postgraduate degree courses offered by the Inter-university School of Specialization organized in conjunction with the University of Naples Suor Orsola Benincasa. The School offers courses in: 1)Archaeological Heritage 2)Historical and Artistic Heritage The above postgraduate courses aim to train future Cultural Heritage experts and managers. The Department also offers postgraduate qualifications courses for future school teachers in the following school cycles and subjects: Lower secondary school subjects: (A043) -Italian -History -Geography Upper secondary school subjects (A050) -Literature -Literature and Latin (A051 – Lyceums) -History of Art (A061) The Department’s teaching activity is distinctly characterized by the quality of student guidance and rapport, which are an integral part of the students’ education offered by our academic staff. The lessons are held in two different campus buildings and are both situated in the ancient city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. The city is an important archaeological site in its own right and home of the famous Roman Amphitheatre. The city’s architectural landscape is also characterized by seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings as well as some fine architectural landmarks in the Liberty style.

The main building of the Department is situated in the heart of the ancient city in the San Francesco Complex. This Complex is a neoclassic structure that clearly echoes that of Luigi Vanvitelli. This Campus building was built on what once was a Roman Cryptoporticus, used as a prison during the Bourbon Age. The University, in collaboration with the Architectural Heritage Authority of Caserta, is actively involved in the process of the building’s restoration currently under way. This monumental heritage site houses the Department’s Library and the topography, palaeography, aerial photogrammetry, computer science and Art@Com labs. All the teaching and research activities that regard postgraduate degrees (master’s level courses, PhD courses and schools of specialization) are conducted in this building. The second building of the Humanities Department is situated in Via Perla, close to the San Francesco Complex. This building is known as the ‘Aulario’ teaching centre and it is where the main teaching activity of the Bachelor Degree courses is conducted. There are several classrooms with modern teaching equipment, study halls and offices for the academic staff. The ‘Aulario’ also houses a language lab, multimedia lab and other areas for cultural and recreational activities, including a cafeteria. The Department’s academic courses are aimed at creating the following specific professional profiles: Cultural Heritage professionals and experts able to work within and in collaboration with public

or private bodies and authorities in charge of the management and development of cultural heritage.

Literary subjects teachers in the Italian school system (with skills in media communication) Art History teacher in the Italian school system The Department of Humanities and Cultural Heritage (DiLBeC) promotes ongoing research projects dealing with territorial organization focused on historical, archaeological, artistic and literary aspects. The territorial theme is an essential resource for the study of human activity and expression. Another common research theme running across various disciplines and approaches is genre studies and text analysis and interpretation. The research activity developed in the archaeological, historical and artistic fields deals with such themes as knowledge acquisition, conservation, communication practices and protection of heritage. The milieu of such research includes areas that stretch from the Terra di Lavoro territory in Campania to the territories of Southern Italy at large. Our research activity is also conducted at an international level with established partnerships with French, Spanish, Libyan and German institutions. This collaborative activity has led to the organization of important exhibitions, museum studies, art collection reviews, excavation projects, creation of archaeological maps, and park design projects. Other disciplines have also benefited from a copious amount of national and international research projects conducted by newly-recruited researchers in the fields of Bibliography, Philology, Philosophy, Literature, and Linguistics.

MASTER’S DEGREE COURSE (SECOND CYCLE) IN ARCHAEOLOGY AND ART HISTORY

Degree Identification: LM-2 Archaeology and LM-89 – Art History

Cycle Years: 2

Credits: 120 CFU

Head of Studies: Prof.ssa Alessandra Perriccioli

The Second Cycle Degree Course in Archaeology and Art History, in compliance with the requirements of the Ministry of Tertiary Education (MIUR), aims to create experts in these fields who will acquire a solid foundation in the disciplines of Archaeology and Art History. Students will also benefit from the integration of other disciplines sharing a common knowledge base, and from technological and scientific course components related to the protection and development of local and territorial Cultural Heritage. The degree programme is organized into two curricula:

- Archaeology - Art History

Both courses are designed to equip students with specialist knowledge from various chronological times and cultural fields. The students should acquire skills and competencies that will allow them to function effectively within the workplace.

The main objective of this course is the creation of professionals able to apply their specific theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of conservation, which has undergone several legislative amendments throughout the Years. These students will possess skills and tools that go beyond the single sector to embrace other fields of practice such as the definition of landscape planning, management, protection and development of heritage resources. The management responsibilities will allow these professionals to integrate their sector-specific objectives with local development.

This is the backdrop to the study of these disciplines dedicated to the more traditional aspects of archaeology and art history. However, students are also afforded the possibility of studying other related aspects such as direct acquisition techniques, photo interpretation, applications of

[15]

Seconda Università degli studi di Napoli Dipartimento di Lettere e Beni Culturali

computing techniques, as well as skills related to artistic documentation, material culture restoration and artistic techniques. In addition, knowledge of museology, legislation, sociology and economy will also be the objects of study.

These essentially cognitive tools will be integrated with activities dealing with the different branches of material culture restoration. Most of these activities are related to the Department’s research projects, which include the use of diagnostic techniques and computerized cataloguing.

The outcomes of these workshops will be assessed through the use of practical and theoretical tasks, which are part of the course exams.

In compliance with the requirements of the Dublin Descriptors, the development of bibliographic and linguistic knowledge will allow students to communicate clearly and effectively with specialist and non-specialist interlocutors. The course activities will also promote self-directed learning and learner autonomy. The essential course requirements are:

- to acquire the ability to apply professional, human and technological resources for the purpose of project planning related to aspects of conservation and preservation;

- to make use of discipline-specific knowledge and understanding in areas that require problem solving skills;

- to make use of acquired interdisciplinary skills; The course will especially focus on training in the following professional profiles:

- archaeologist - art historian - museum expert - cataloguing expert - media editor for specific publishing houses

The above profiles are included in the National Charter of Museum Professions and in the Quality Standards Charter for Cultural Heritage established by MIBAC. Internships and training periods are also part of the course requirements.

INTERNSHIPS AND TRAINING EXPERIENCES

The Department aims to promote and sustain internship activities for its students. The training activities are jointly organized by the Department and the workplace institutions that offer their collaboration. They are an important part of the student’s overall educational training as they represent the student’s first experience with the world of work. Firms, companies, Chambers of Commerce, Cultural Institutions and Public Administration Institutions also benefit from this work-based experience as they have immediate access to the professional profiles they require to implement their businesses or cultural activities. Conventions and agreements are the legislative tools that regulate this activity, in which both parties, the University and the Institution, firm or company, appoint a tutor whose main task is to monitor the entire activity as well as the progress made by each individual student. All expenses are covered by the University, including insurance costs. Upon completion of the work-based experience, the student is issued a final certificate indicating the skills acquired on the job.

PLACEMENT

The Second University of Naples, spread across 5 different cities, has dedicated its mission to the dissemination of knowledge within a complex network of relations, in the attempt to meet the needs of both the external world, with its own pressing issues such as cultural, social and economic development, and the needs of the student body as a whole. The Guidance Programme is one of the most crucial services offered by the University. Activities include student support upon admission, during the entire course of study and after graduation. The Job Placement services are particularly important as the activities are aimed at supporting students throughout job application and recruitment processes. Job placement services are also an added value for the Institutions, companies and firms that offer their expertise in favour of the University’s student body. They have the opportunity to assess students on-the-job in order to agree on the necessary requirements and skills that make up specific professional profiles. In compliance with Law 183 of 4/11/201 and subsequent amendments, the University may publish students’ curricula, free of charge and with identity protection protocols, upon admission and within 12 months after graduation. By contacting the University, this service allows partners to access the national CV database (Cliclavoro) in order to recruit applicants.

Head of Placement: Prof. Nadia Barrella
