The loss of life

• The picture on the left is a mass grave site. The exact number of bodies buried here is uncertain, but the estimates are around 100,000. Shallow ditches were dug with a tractor, and the bodies were dumped with dump trucks and then covered.

• There are many bodied still buried in the rubble of the city. There are not enough tractors or heavy equipment to lift the huge slabs of concrete that have collapsed on top of people. Some estimates are as high as 100,000 still buried in the rubble.

• There is a spiritual heaviness over the country of hopelessness and despair.

All municipal hospitals collapsed or are so badly damaged they are unusable. Doctors without borders set up this trauma tent and are treating patients there.

There are estimated to be millions of displaced people all over the country. The more fortunate ones are living in ten city’s all over the country. Hundreds of thousands more are sleeping on the ground with only bed sheets or pieces of plastic for covering.
