Page 5: Growth and development potential of livestock and fisheries in Bangladesh

The main growth drivers are supply of improved breed, feed, and fodder, veterinary health services, smallholder farmers, and private sector-led investments.

Growth Drivers

Livestock → 2.9 percent of National GDP

Fisheries → 5 percent of National GDP

Aquaculture is the driving force due to intensive technological management and improved fish breeds.

Unfortunately the growth in open water fisheries is declining, though it still contribute more than 40 percent of total fish production.

Supply - Demand Gap

By the year 2015

There will be deficit of 0.33 million tons of

milk, 0.76 million tons of meat and

1 million ton of fish under all alternative growth scenarios

Faster higher growth is crucial

GOOD PRACTICES AND SECTORAL SUCCESS

Cross breed cows – give several times more milk than local breed – The use of deep frozen semen is the key to success

High profitability of cattle fattening above 35000/- per small unit

Small holder Poultry unit earns more than Tk 88000/–

High economic value of wetlands – CBFM and MACH have shown the path

Page 8: Growth and development potential of livestock and fisheries in Bangladesh

CHALLENGES FACING THE SECTORS

Policy barriers

Dairy and poultry sector suffer due to

high Taxes and Tariffs

Wetland Leasing – Prohibitive to investment

Weak Mainstream Extension System limit

Private Sector Participation

Women’s Involvement is not encouraging

Page 9: Growth and development potential of livestock and fisheries in Bangladesh

Additional barriers Genetic degradation in carp and other farmed fish species

Restriction of breeds and livestock breeding program

Lack of organized market and low value addition

Climate change

Availability of Feeds and Fodder for Livestock

Inadequate coverage of animal health service

Decline in the growth of in inland open water fisheries

Depletion of resources and degradation of public water bodies

and habitat

Low productivity of aquaculture fisheries

Low productivity of brackish water shrimp

Page 10: Growth and development potential of livestock and fisheries in Bangladesh

PRIORITY INVESTMENT AREAS The potential

High potential of employing more than 40 million people in next 5 years in these sectors Remove policy barriers and work toward institutional reform

Investment Opportunities Special Fiscal measures Offer Incentive Credit Program and insurance Provide safety nets for vulnerable smallholders and community-based fishers Provide subsidies to support feed and forage production Adjust Taxes and Tariffs

Page 11: Growth and development potential of livestock and fisheries in Bangladesh

Livestock

Promote smallholder poultry and dairy development

Improve diagnostic capacity and veterinary clinical services Develop public–private partnerships in diversified vaccine production and marketing

Promote sustainable management of animal genetic resources (AnGR)

Prepare for highly pathogenic avian influenza

Promote hygiene in animal food production and processing

Add value to livestock and fishery diversity

Page 12: Growth and development potential of livestock and fisheries in Bangladesh

Fisheries Community-based co-management: A solution to wetland degradation in Bangladesh

Use genetics and biotechnology to enhance aquaculture productivity

Improve productivity of brackish water shrimp

Assess marine fisheries resources and

Determine prospects of Tuna
