Group Photo Analysis

First Year Seminar 100

JUNE 30, 2014

Page 2: Group photo analysis

Photo #1

1. The photograph holds a group of women in it, presumably from the early 20th

century.

2. The women appear to be cooking something, assumingly food. The evidence lies

in the piles of dishes and the oven of which the women are circled around.

3. The photographer is showing the lifestyle of a middle-aged woman in the early

20th century.

4. This photo represents the subjugations of women before they are to stand up for

their rights later on.

5. What finally made women stand up for their rights?

6. “Work-at-home Women”

7. Google the images of women before they got their rights.

8. Three things I inferred:

These women are acquainted with each other.

They are cooking a lot, possibly for a huge party or group of people.

Due to the look of the house and the age of the photo, it is likely that the

picture is taken in the early 20th century.

Photo #2

1. It appears to be Hitler in the photo, along with a child and some women in the

background.

2. Hitler is shaking the child’s hand, possibly as a stunt to gain popularity, as like

presidents in the USA.

3. This could possibly be used as propaganda to show the better side of Hitler.

4. Because it’s Hitler; he’s important to history.

5. Was this picture taken before the war? Why is Hitler shaking the boy’s hand?

6. “Hitler’s friendly side”

7. Google “Hitler shaking hands”

8. Three things I inferred:

This photo is taken in Germany.

This is before/during WWII.

The woman nearest to the boy is the boy’s mother.

Photo #3

1. Civil Rights activists and policemen. (And dogs).

2. The men in the photo are Civil Rights activists, fighting for their rights, while the

policemen are trying to push them back.

3. The brutality of police back then, fighting for rights.

4. It’s the Civil Rights era.

5. Why were the dogs allowed to bite the activists? How did it get to this, back then?

6. “Civil Rights”

7. Google “Civil Rights Photos”

8. Three things I inferred:

This took place during the Civil Rights era.

Judging from the audience’s reactions, they are acting peacefully at the

rally.

Because the dogs in the photo are Germen Shepherds, the people handling

them are police.

Photo #4

1. Lady Liberty is in the photo, along with a dead man.

2. The Statue of Liberty appears to be hanging an African American by her arm,

from his neck.

3. The cartoonist of the picture is trying to convey that African Americans don’t

have rights in the US.

4. Because it depicts Civil Rights in the US for African Americans.

5. When was this drawn? Is this a literal or metaphorical interpretation of African

American rights?

6. “Liberty’s Grip”

7. Google

8. Three things I inferred:

Due to skin coloration, the hanged man is African American.

It is not a photograph, but a cartoon drawing.

This is most likely during the Jim Crow era.

Photo #5

1. Foreigners, possibly European, are standing side-by-side in the photograph.

2. They’re emigrating from a European country to the USA. Evidence: Statue of

Liberty.

3. The photo is showing us the multitude of people that would come to the US years

ago.

4. Because it shows how important the US is to people around the world.

5. Due to the size of the buildings in the background of the photo, when was this

picture taken?

6. “Europe and the US”

7. Google

8. Three things I inferred:

They are most likely European, judging from their clothes.

They are a family.

They could possibly be coming to start a new life in the US.

Photo #7

1. Military members and ordinary individuals.

2. The military is doing physicals on the group of men. The military men are

wearing their uniforms, and the other men have their shirts off, getting their eyes

checked.

3. The photographer is trying to show the daily life of a military member.

4. This shows how much things have changed; they used to go to just ordinary

military personnel for checkups, but now they go to medical doctors and

professionals.

5. Which country’s military is in the photo? Why is the corner cut out of the photo?

6. “Military checkup”

7. Google

8. Three things I inferred:

The people getting checkups are wanting to get in to the military, because

they don’t have military clothing.

This is a legitimate photo, because of the cut corner.

The room is small, due to the spacing of the people and the walls around

them.
