This is a close up shot of Jessie J and within the mise en scene there are certain ideas created by this photo. This photo would be very striking and withdrawing to the audience if featured on a front cover. The use of dark red colour in this image connotes the passion behind her and her music career. The leopard print clothing suggests that Jessie J is rather fierce and powerful. Direct eye contact indicates that she is a confident music artist and is upfront. The picture is almost completely symmetrical as her hair is almost at a similar length with a straight cut fringe, her makeup is more or less the same and her facial features are also identical to each other despite her mole and nose piercing. Her music based upon this picture is thought to be current and upbeat as statement colours are used. Although Jessie J hasn’t gone public about her sexuality, this photo suggests that Jessie J is appealing to both sexes and the way she’s made up with striking makeup shows how she tries to portray herself to be attractive.

This is a long shot photograph of Lorde who is most famous for her wild hair, which also indicates about her furious personality and her outrageous style, musically and fashion wise. The position of the model, her legs mostly and the way they are propped up, suggest her music is rather easy and relaxing to listen to, which it is however it can be a bit unexpected. The body language and the non-existent eye

contact could suggest she’s in a vulnerable position which creates the representation of gender to be negative. The white background and white chairs that are used as props allow Lorde and her clothing to stand out against the blank canvas, this could hint how she’s made an impact on the music industry. Usually, a picture of an artist includes the artist looking directly at the camera; however this is quite unusual and connotes her genre type, as indie pop/minimal. Her makeup is rather simplistic and nothing to eye catching, which is usually what grabs the attention of possible audiences, the vibrancy of colour and the impact it has on the reader.

This photo shows all the members however the background separates the lead singer from the other members by the stand in the middle, this indicates that the proximity of the individuals may be close as a band when working together but in this photo, looks distant. The background allows there to be a separation between the lead singer and the other band member, it may not be clear in their music but it is clear in this photo. There isn’t really any symmetry within this photo as 3 members are on one side of the post whereas the lead singer is alone and the focus on him, however this doesn’t necessarily show in their music and songs. The physicality and posture of the band suggest that their music style is relaxed yet passionate as their hands are either tucked away in their pant pockets or holding one another, indicates that they are relaxed in the way they are stood however passionate in their music and making that come across. The main focus of the photo is on the lead singer as he is the closest to the camera which will focus the attention on him. The colours used are quite vintage based music but are musically labelled as folk rock, especially the green/yellow pants. The clothing is quite folky, which matches their genre, with the waistcoats although unbuttoned give a folk/country vibe especially with the ruffed up shirt.

This image is of Bastille, and it is actually quite rare to see a picture of the band including all band members as like most bands, the main focus is on the lead singer and their talents, which is usually why the lead singer is the only one in the images. Within the mise en scene, there is a clear differentiation between the members, placing the focus on the lead singer. The costumes present juxtaposition as the other members are wearing black which are usually associated with rock in the music industry and the lead singer is wearing white which can connote his voice being pure and simplistic. Due to this imbalance in the costumes, the main focus is the lead singer as he stands out more against the grey background. Also, the focus is placed on the lead singer as he is closest to the camera compared to the other members and the camera is more clear in his direction, however in regards to the other members the camera is slightly blurred, which then strikes that the lead singer is most important. Physicality wise, the lead singer attracts attention as his hair is rather volumised, textured and creates more height in regards to his actual height, whereas the other members have no additional factors which make them taller and if the main singer didn’t have such large hair, he’d be the same height as one of the other band members. There’s a division in the band in regards to the image, and image symmetry has been disregarded as the lead singer is stood on his own and the other members and placed further back and all together. High key lighting is used to accentuate the lead singer’s features and highlight his role in the band, alternatively low key lighting is used on other members to create shadow on their faces and to indicate that they are stuck in the lead singer’s shadow.

This is a rather vintage looking close up shot of Lana del Rey, and this could suggest that Lana’s music has a vintage or indie vibe to it. This photo looks rather animated in terms of the false eyelashes, blank expression and the large, plump yet enhanced lips, this gives the impression that her music may feature animated and unnatural aspects. The natural lighting coming from behind Lana highlights the wisps of her hair and the disorientated style, which suggest the raspy tone she has to her voice and how she can fluctuate from different styles in relation to genres. Image symmetry may have been considered as the expression and the position of her hands are similar on both sides of the image, apart from small, minor glitches. The statement jewellery worn by Lana, the ring and large necklace indicates her impact in the music business and her input to this. The flowers on the necklace are large and flowers are usually associated with females and “flower power”, this image represents females to be fragile and delicate in relation to the flowers, however Lana is a rather empowering and inspirational female with a punch of indie. Also, the size of the flowers may be ironic, as she could be slightly mocking how everyone perceives females. Still on the jewellery concept, Lana is wearing smaller earrings which could suggest femininity and delicate in relation to feelings and emotions, on the other hand on the outside she’s the complete opposite. The pose is rather sultry and sensual compared with the makeup, and would be appealing to both genders as her lips are slightly parted and looks like she’s waiting for a kiss. The makeup is subtle but still attractive towards both genders and makes her look flawless. The use of shallow depth of field which makes the audience’s eyes focus on her more rather than being distracted by the vintage looking background.

This is a close up shot of Wilkinson who is a British record producer, and produced ‘Afterglow’ with Becky Hill’s vocals, but is still considered an artist. All his songs feature another artist singing; however he made the backing tracks and put everything together. This photo suggests that Wilkinson is serious about the music her produces and you can see this in his facial expression, stern yet inviting. The black background has an impact as it bold and allows Wilkinson to stand out against it, the impact of the closeness indicates that Wilkinson is a key member when his music is produced and there aren’t many others involved. Additionally, this picture suggests that it doesn’t matter what’s happening outside of his heads because the focus is on the music and where the ideas are generated from, his mind. Although the picture is slightly blurred, it looks like he’s wearing a suit of some sort, again connotes to him being serious and passionate about the music he develops and produces. High key lighting is used to accentuate certain features on his face and to allow the audience to be captured by his glaring eyes. The powerful glare suggests that the music he produces is powerful, in contrast to that he has an album called ‘Powerless’. This photo doesn’t necessarily indicate that his music is of a drum and bass genre, although it suggests that his music is prominent. Photo symmetry is demonstrated in this picture despite one of his ears sticking out slightly; this pose is suggestively simple but still has a lot of impact on the person receiving the image.

This is a mid-shot of the band Kings Of Leon which shows all the band members who are all brothers. Within the mise en scene, the physicality of the members suggests that some band members are in sync with each other. Direct eye contact is used by only 2 band members, the lead singer and another one of the members which indicates the confidence and up front approach they have to music and enthusiasm. The order that they stood in shows who the most prominent member of the band is and who plays the biggest part in the band. Although another member is directly looking into the camera, he is being blocked by another member who accentuates the lead member and his confidence in the band and in the music industry. The other band members who facing away from the camera suggests that they don’t have a prominent feature in the band, that they only really play an instrument that is included in the background of the songs. To enhance the focus placed on the lead singer and his role in the band, shallow depth of field could have been used to highlight the role of just the lead singer. The clothes that the members are wearing connote to the genre of music that they produce which is alternative rock and the leather jackets and pendant subtly suggests their genre. Additionally, the rough look of the lead singer regarding his facial hair and slightly untidy hair indicates the genre of music and is also appealing to the female audience. Photo symmetry isn’t portrayed in this picture as the arrangement of the members isn’t symmetrical and places focus on the lead singer. High key lighting is used to create a shadow behind the artists which stands out against the plain white background; also it is used to highlight certain features on the member’s faces.
