HISTORY OF COURIER SERVICES
Pigeons and messengers were the initial forms of courier services
Courier services began during the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, with small companies running them in a handful of cities
across the US. They used to take messages.
Some early companies provided delivery of luggage and other
packages.
Angadia service was prominent in Indian courier history. They
carry money, documents and diamonds.
In India ,Courier industry came into existence in 1977 and gained
momentum in 1980s

The organized Courier industry came into existence in 1977
India has players like: DTDC, First Flight,Bluedart, DHL,Blazeflash and Fed
Ex
Blue Dart Courier services is the first carrier in India to provide domestic
and international on-board courier services
Indian logistics sector is at the lower end of the evolution stage with high
logistics cost of about 13% against a global average of 8~10%
Low investments in Technology (Warehousing Practices & Trace Systems)
Its characterized by poor infrastructure, low IT implementation and
limited industry partners with no integration
Dabbawalas of Mumbai pick up and deliver 200,000 lunch boxes everyday
with less than 10 boxes miss-delivered everyday, highlighting how
processes can make logistics network error proof
