Introduction

• Our theme is Women’s rights in the middle east.

• Our EQ is “How are women’s daily lives in Syria different from those in Saudi Arabia?”

• Our thesis statement is “For women in both Saudi Arabia and Syria daily life continues to be a challenge. They have little say when it comes to their Religion, rights, fashion, and relationships with men.

Relationships With Men• In Syria, women usually have to get married to their first

cousins, because they want to keep cohesiveness within their family. Today, there is a law that sets age limits at which a father can marry off his young daughter (who is usually still a child).

• In Saudi Arabia, husbands are not allowed to see the physical appearance of there soon-to-be spouse (friends of the girl have to tell him). After they are married, women are forced to keep their maiden name, because they are still property of their father. Unlike in Syria, Saudi Arabia still does not have a law preventing child marriages. Recently, an eight-year-old girl was married off to a forty-year-old man, because her father was selling her off (like a slave) for dowry money.

Relationships With Men

• In both Saudi Arabia and Syria, divorce is difficult for women to fairly receive. Women in both societies are treated like objects that can be used and thrown away by there husbands. Their husbands can easily say the Talaka “I divorce you”’ three times.

• Women have to go to a Sharia Court and appeal against their husbands (who often are not seen as guilty).

• This shows how women are seen as inferiors to men. Women are like slaves to their husbands.
