Habitat Monroe has been blessed with many successful years since its start in 1995. However, 2018 marks a milestone year for us as we broke ground on our 100th home in Monroe County. Reaching this point in our work serves as a breakthrough for Habitat Monroe and begins a new phase of our affiliate.  Our faith and commitment to our mission have been renewed as we look back over the past 24 years. In that time, we have built houses in nearly every part of the county, from Temperance to South Rockwood. We have had 148 adults go through our homeownership program and have helped 229 children have a safe home to grow and prosper in.  It's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the big picture. Taking that first shovel of earth signified the 100th time we have helped a family achieve homeownership. It provided myself and our team a chance to refocus our efforts and remember what makes the work all worth it. I look forward to the coming years to reach even greater heights and achievements.

Breaking New Ground On May 15, 2018 Habitat Monroe had the privilege of breaking

ground at the site of its 100th home in Monroe County. Since its

start in 1995, Habitat Monroe has lead the effort to build safe,

decent, and affordable housing in the area. 148 adults and 229

children now have homes of their own because of Habitat.

Breaking A SweatOur volunteer experience allows members from all

corners of the community to interact with each

other and work together towards a common goal.

Habitat Monroe has welcomed individuals & groups

from all over Southeast Michigan, including church

groups, school groups, corporate groups, and others

to help build homes, community, and hope. This

summer we had over 300 volunteers work to help

complete our 100th home.

Breaking The Mold The Habitat Monroe ReStore is more

than just a typical retail store. They offer

a unique variety of home merchandise,

at an affordable price. Products are

donated by the community, promoting a

conscious effort to reduce waste and to

give back to others. All of the ReStore's

profit goes directly back into Habitat's

fund to build affordable housing in

Monroe County.

Breaking The Cycle Habitat's home-ownership program helps people

escape the cycle of renting. We serve those who

are between 40-80% of the area's median

income. Through Habitat, qualified applicants

only need $1000 for a down payment. By

attending financial capability classes, home

maintenance classes, and working through their

sweat equity hours on build sites, the

homeowners learn the strength, stability, and

self-reliance that they need to thrive.

Habitat Monroe is the only affiliate to become a certified counseling agency by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Our financial coach assists the public by providing Home Ownership Preparation and Education, or HOPE. In financial capability classes and one- on-one counseling, HOPE clients learn how to adjust their financial habits, manage their money, and grow their savings, to prepare for homeownership.

Breaking The NormAccording to a 2015 report by Habitat for Humanity International, low-income families spend anywhere from 17 to 50 percent of their income on utility costs. At Habitat Monroe, we have a responsibility to the homeowner to help ensure that their home is affordable, including utility bills. We do this by building Energy Star certified homes.  All newly constructed homes are Energy Star tested and certified by separate third party inspectors. Energy Star homes must perform at least 20% better than houses using standard building codes. We utilize things like tankless water heaters, Energy Recovery Ventilators, and high efficiency heating systems, which keeps utility bills lower for the homeowner and are less harmful to the environment.
