Grooms’ Gazette September 23, 2019 Dates to Remember Shared Reading We read If you Give a Dog a Donut, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If You Give a Moose a Muffin, and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. We began practicing our phonemic awareness skills this week and listened for words that began with the same sound. We incorporated phonics by identifying the letter that makes the sound we heard. We discussed the characters in the story and how that means who is in the story. We also talked about cause and effect as we read Laura Numeroff’s if you give a … books. We discussed how we could use our imagination and make up our own stories of an animal that you could give something to and we made a list. We had fun coming up with some great story ideas. We tried to make the animal and what we gave them begin with the same sound like pig and pancake.. As you are reading with your child have them listen for words that begin with the same sound. If they can do that easily then have them isolate the first sound in a word and ask them what letter makes that sound. Math We have worked on understanding and writing numbers 11-20 this week. We have practiced putting these numbers in ten frames and talking about how they are made up of a ten and some ones or two tens. We discussed the reason why we write the numbers with the two numerals and what those numbers represent. We used manipulatives to break the numbers into different parts. We also practiced counting on from ten when we see a full ten frame or two fives in our counting jar. Social Science We read My Global Address. We learned about what an address is and discussed why it is important to know your address. We talked about how we will be making a book and writing our address in the book to help us practice remembering it. If your child doesn’t know their address, please take this weekend to work on learning it together. We also discussed how we all live in the city of Auburn. We began making a web of all the things we see, do, and places we go in Auburn. They had great ideas! We have a web of different schools, parks, grocery stores, neighborhoods, restaurants, animals, and much more. We also talked about the University and the things that make our city special. We looked at a map of the city of Auburn and found the different streets we live on. We also discussed people that work and help us in our community. Shared Journal We are working super hard in journals. I am seeing more sounding out in journals. They rocked adding the first sound of each word in their sentences. They are beginning to use a few sight words that are on our word wall. I am seeing detailed pictures. I am so proud of their hard work and progress in their writing and drawing.
