Dear Parents and Friends of Grey Congratulations on a splendid 2019! While we can all catch our breath and enjoy the coming holidays we can look back at a very successful 2019. When looking at almost every conceivable metric, our Men of the Grey have delivered and truly lived up to our motto of Tria Juncta in Uno (Mind, Body and Spirit) by excelling in all these areas. Our academics have once again shown improvement throughout the year, our sport results have been excellent across the board, our cultural and intramural programme has flourished and our bands have performed more often than ever before. Our enrollment is strong, our finances are secure and this year saw the biggest capital improvements on the campus in the last decade. We replaced the Astro turf, built new dugouts at the Rectory Astro, built the Mini Astro, doubled the size of the school Gym, refurbished and updated the Boarding House bathrooms, added a second borehole and are nearing completion of building a proper practice area and home for our rowers. While these projects have already contributed to our improved sporting results, I am particularly pleased that the hard work on the academic front is showing dividends and when we track our school average for grades 8 to 11 over the last three years there is a very noticeable improvement in the average from 62% in 2017 to 63% last year and 65% this year. This bodes well for the future. Results such as these do not simply happen, but are products of hard work and commitment. Thank you to our whole Grey community for making this year successful. To our parents, thank you for your support of both the school and your sons. The positive relationship between our boys, our teachers and yourselves is central to the success of each of our boys, and in fact, our whole community. 2020 looks bright and we look forward to continued growth and success. 2020 will see a number of new initiatives. Central to these will be:

Firstly we will be changing from a 7-day to a 10-day timetable cycle. Hence, in future a Monday will always be a Day 1 or a Day 6 and Friday will always be Day 5 or Day 10. This will provide greater stability and predictability to the academic timetable and will be particularly useful for boys who struggle with planning their academic day.

We will also be introducing timetabled subject days. Here, days at the start of term and end of term are set aside as block days for teachers to cover work that is missed on Fridays due to sport and other interruptions. At the moment, far too many boys think it is acceptable to miss the last few days of the school term. The introduction of subject days will turn these periods into a productive time where new work is covered.

Next year, we will also be introducing a new school database that will see a significant change to our reporting. In particular, the reports will include more information per subject and give a better holistic view of performance over time.

As we reflect on 2019, I would personally like to thank our Board of Governors and in particular our outgoing chairman, Mr Greg Billson, for their support and guidance. Our governors play a key role in the success of the school and serve as dedicated parents who give their time selflessly to ensure that our boys receive the best possible education.

Sachin Naidoo was awarded the top award as well as the Cultural Award and Ricky King received the award for Sport. Well done to our men! A special thank you to our Matric Parents for the great partnership that you have had with The Grey over a number of years. A very sincere thanks to our Matrics and their Parents for their very generous of over R74000 to the School, which is greatly valued and appreciated. These funds will be used to install some benches in the gallery. I wish you a very blessed Christmas and a festive and most enjoyable holiday. We look forward to welcoming all members of the Grey Family back to the school in the New Year and trust that 2020 will be hugely successful and enjoyable. For those of you travelling, please return safely. SIYA KOLISI RAISES THE WILLIAM WEBB ELLIS TROPHY

The jubilant scenes at the Yokohama Stadium in Tokyo capped a remarkable year for both the Springboks and their Captain and Old Grey, Siya Kolisi. He led his charges to win their third World Cup after annihilating England by 32 points to 12. Siya’s growth from his humble origins in Zwide, before establishing himself at Grey High School, has been inspirational to many in our school community. He has transcended his position as the captain of the World Cup winning Springboks to embody what is possible when African children are afforded opportunities to shine, despite the desperate challenges many in our land face. Siya enters a new phase in his career as an icon both of Rugby and South Africa.

We, as Grey High School, are tremendously proud of an Old Grey who has reached the pinnacle of his sport. More so, we are humbled to have played a small part in shaping and guiding a young man to be the best he could possibly be, as a human being, a father, and a South African. We salute you Siya, Tria Juncta in Uno!

STAFFING

Staff leaving: Mrs Landie Oosthuizen will be leaving us to join the rest of her family at Alexander Road

High. This leaves a big hole in our IT Department as she is an outstanding teacher. We are currently looking to fill this position with somebody of calibre and, in the interim, will have Mr Langenhoven fill the position. This has been made possible by Mrs Smith agreeing to delay her retirement by a term while we advertise and find somebody appropriate.

Mr Jarryd Cooke has been accepted into the Royal Navy and will be leaving us in February 2020. His duties will be filled for the first term by Mrs Bezuidenhout, who like Mrs Smith has agreed to delay her retirement by a term while we find a suitable teacher.

Staff reaching retirement age: Mrs Lynette Smith (CAT for 11 years) – will remain in a temporary position. Mrs Michele Bezuidenhout (Library and History for 21 years) – will remain in a temporary

position.

New Staff: Mr Jason Rademeyer will join us in the CAT department as a replacement for fro Mrs

Smith. Mr Rademeyer will be joining us from Linkside High School.

Miss Elandré Bosch will be joining the Afrikaans department and establishing the Drama department. Mrs Bosch is a graduate from Stellenbosch with a background in Theatre productions and this will be her first teaching post.

Mr Dries van Schalkwyk will be joining us as a Sports Administrator and rugby coach.

Other staff news: Miss Esté Bezuidenhout is getting married in December to Old Grey, James Gardner.

Ryan & Russell Laurie are expecting their first son early in January. Others to follow in

the year: Lynn & Pete Furstenburg, Celesté van Vuuren & Zaine Marx, Kegan &

Jessica Topper and Declan & Kirstin McLaggan.

Our condolences to Fenner & Silicia Barnard – Fenner’s father (well known to the Muir

College families) passed away on 22 November.

ACADEMIC MATTERS

FINAL EXAMINATIONS 2019

The date for the release of the Matric results is expected to be in the vicinity of 08 January 2019 at 10:30, though this date has yet to be confirmed. In this

BODAS

Many thanks to our hard-working Chairman, Mr Vlam Michau, and his dynamic committee for all that they have done for the Meriway men. This year has been a busy one for them and when reviewing their year, they can reflect on many successes - in particular the refurbishments of the bathrooms. The hard work of our hostel council continues to ensure that there is a very special atmosphere and ‘home away from home’ environment in the hostels. Mr Andrew Masterson has kindly taken over as Hostel Chairman for 2020.

Sincere thank you to Senior Housemaster, Mr Gerhard Hills and his assistants - Messrs Siya Denga (Deputy Housemaster), Fenner Barnard, Beän van Eeden, Zaine Marx, Jarryd Cooke, André van Zyl, Richard Rautenbach and Reinhardt Oborn – for their commitment to the ‘Bodas’ in so many ways. Sincere thanks to Mrs Anne Tarr (Housekeeper) and to Mrs Jean McGahey (Medical Matron) for all that they have done in the best interests of our resident staff and ‘Bodas’. We are immensely grateful to Mr Francois Holder who has assisted the Medical Matron during the course of this year. From 2020, the boda’s will revert to two traditional houses, namely Meridith & Way. This will enable us to run the hostel more efficiently with the mentoring of smaller groups. Mr Fenner Barnard will be in charge of Meredith and Mr Siya Denga in charge of Way. However, they will still compete against the day-boys as Meriway. All our ‘Boda’ parents are fantastic brand ambassadors for The Grey. Thank you ALL for what you continue to do!

LADIES’ COMMITTEE

Sincere thanks are extended to Mrs Sam Bowers, Chairlady for this year, and her willing group of committee members for their fantastic and committed support during 2019. We are very grateful to our hard-working ladies who are always prepared to go out of their way in looking after the interests of the Grey Family. This is highly appreciated and valued and not taken for granted. Most important of all is that they enjoy and derive great pleasure from all that they do – and that’s what it’s all about! Many thanks, also, to those Dads who ‘throw their weight in’ by assisting the school in many and varied ways. Mrs Sue Atherton, who liaises with the ladies, is to be thanked for her role in always delivering outstanding service to the school which is done with love, care and complete dedication are hugely appreciated by our young men and their parents. We look forward to welcoming many of our new parents ‘on board’ in 2020.

I have no doubt that this experience will ‘bond’ this group into a formidable team, ready to accept the challenges that they will face as our leaders in 2020. Our sincere thanks to Mrs Sue Atherton, in advance, who always caters superbly for our men while on camp.

BUDGET MEETING - PRESENTATION TO PARENTS

The 2020 Budget, presented to Parents on Monday 28 October, was passed unanimously, with the increase in school fees set at 7.62% (one of the lowest in eleven years) - thank you to our Treasurer, Bursar, Governors and staff involved for their wise fiscal controls and planning! School Fees will be R55 020pa and Boarding Fees R64 260. Many thanks to those parents who joined members of the Governing Body for this important presentation. Academic excellence at The Grey High School will always remain our core priority and, as such, our Grey men are privileged to be in an academic institution which offers a 1:14 teacher to pupil ratio.

OLD GREYS’ UNION & GREY FOUNDATION

The Old Greys’ Union continues to play a vital role in providing support for our School. Our National President, Mr David Hurr, the Executive and ALL Old Greys are sincerely thanked for what they continue to do for and mean to the School. The financial contribution of the OGU towards our annual Prize-giving and other projects is sincerely appreciated. At our annual Prize-giving, the prestigious Old Greys’ Union Award for 2019 was this year presented to Matriculant, Ricky King, by the National President, Mr Dave Hurr.

DANCE CLUB

All the members of the Dance Club enjoyed another successful and thoroughly entertaining year. I would like to take this opportunity to commend Jordan Berrington (Chairman), Tom Heath (Vice-Chairman) and their committee for all their input, organisation, enthusiastic leadership and absolute passion for the club.

The newly appointed Dance Committee for 2019 is Tom Heath (Chairman), Brett Rimmer (Vice-Chairman), Iwan Swart, and Justin Nash. Congratulations to Estiaan Hough for being nominated as the “Ballroom Dancer of the Year 2019”, as well as to the following dancers who were highly commended (above 80%) in their dance tests. The tests were conducted during the Test Week in August: Pre-Bronze Badge: Beginners Level (Style – Ballroom & Latin) Brett Rimmer 93.5%; Bronze Badge: Intermediate Level (Style – Ballroom & Latin) Estiaan Hough 79%; Iwan Swart 88%; Silver Badge: Intermediate Level (Style – Ballroom) Estiaan Hough 90.33%.

Every club member has come to understand, appreciate and enjoy the skill of dancing. The year has seen each of them benefit from their dance lessons on various levels. Confidences soared and numerous beginners’ two left feet learnt to work together in harmony to sweep their partners off their feet. A sincere thanks to the team from Collegiate for all their effort and organisation throughout the year. Our instructors from the Dare 2 Dance Studio, Hadrian and Leslie Roberts – your guidance to and mentorship of our Grey men, as well as your passion and overall dedication to the art of dancing, is outstanding and inspiring. The Grey Gaming Club traveled to Johannesburg in October to take part in the second High School Esports League (HSEL) National Finals, held at the Maverick Gaming Center in association with VS GAMING. Grey was represented in two of the three genres, namely Counter Strike Global Offensive (CS:GO) and DOTA2. Both teams enjoyed a successful tournament, the CS:GO team placed 4th at the tournament narrowly missing out on 3rd place. Their results were as follows: Pool Stages: Lost to Parklands, Beat Westville, Beat Jeppe, Semi Finals: Lost to Paul Roos, 3rd/4th Playoff: Lost to Parklands, ended fourth.

However, the DOTA 2 side was most successful; they were unbeaten in all 10 games during the tournament and brought home the gold medal making them the 2019 HSEL Champions. Their results were as follows: Beat Ligbron, Parklands, Glenwood, SEMI FINAL, beat Glenwood 36-1, and 47-10. FINAL Vs Parklands (Game 1) won 42-41 and (Game 2) 41-17. GREY COOKS

The final cook-off was held on 16 October. The six finalists were: Daniel Matyszak, Sebastian Hammershmidt, Jarred Gardiner, Duncan Boucher, Nicholas Junger and Carter Mohaud. They were given 90 minutes to cook three dishes - starter, main and desert. The dishes went through anonymously to three judges – one of which was Mr Townsin – and then scored. At the end of which, all scores were totalled, and the positions were as follows: 3rd: Carter Mohaud, 2nd: Nicholas Junger and Rookie Chef for 2019 or 1st place: Duncan Boucher. Well done to the boys on completing this course, and thank you to all at Capsicum for your patience and assistance. Ms Montana Botha (PGCE student at Grey 2019) served as assistant staff in charge, and her time and effort was very much appreciated.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

In collaboration with Grey Union and Preservation Society, we collected water (in exchange for fizzers) for Karoo drought-stricken areas. We ended the year off well and achieved our goal by donating 50 Shoeboxes to the Santa Shoebox Project. Thank you to those members who are always willing to walk the extra mile. You are truly dedicated to the cause. Let US continue here at the Grey to make a difference.

PRESERVATION SOCIETY

Although exams understandably hampered participation in weekend environmental action, our trusty band of eco-warriors have still managed to support WESSA with a beach clean-up from Pollack Beach towards Cape Recife this term as well as two alien vegetation “hacks” on Saturday mornings. Hundreds of rooikrantz and Port Jackson wattle saplings were removed from the NMU campus and from the Baakens Valley in October and November.

Thank you to Mr Corbyn Dolley and Mrs Melissa Riordan for their involvement and thank you to Rector Erasmus and his family for supporting the beach clean-up in the gale on the morning before the Rugby World Cup final!

SCA

Although there were no formal activities for SCA in the fourth term, our daily morning meetings continued, led by our dedicated committee members. Congratulations to our newly-elected committee members: Reece Hall; James Sutton; Jean Hough; Aidan Nel and Nathan McCallum and to our new Chairman, Kellan Harrison, and Vice-Chairman, Nathan Sieberhagen.

A huge thanks to our outgoing matric committee members who have given so generously of their time and hearts over the past years. We wish you God’s richest blessings in your future endeavours.

SIGHT AND SOUND

Sight and Sound has continued to grow in numbers and capabilities. The film division has about 10 active members, while the photography division has about 20 members. Our task is to photograph or film or both, all events that take place within the school’s calendar. This material is used for social media purposes, the print press, marketing material, promotions, catalogues, brochures, and serves as a digital archive. 2019 is the year Sight and Sound bids farewell to current Chairman, Mitch Lovemore. Mitch has been a rock-steady, irreplaceable member since Grade 9, and has served the club and the school in an exceptional manner – always willing, always committed, and always dependable to produce the goods. Thank you for being an exceptional servant and asset to The Grey. The incoming committee for 2019 / 2020 consists of seasoned veterans. The new chairman is Glynn Rudman. He has served for a number of years already, and is highly efficient at all tasks required. Justin Dickie likewise is skilled in all tasks, and has been a loyal servant since Grade 8. Heading up the Photographic division is Kyle Seale. Kyle has shown remarkable dependability and responsibility. Good luck to the new committee. There are a number of promising juniors coming through, which bodes well for the 2020 year.

SPEAKERS’ CLUB

Eighteen Grade 11 pupils participated in this year’s Speakers’ Club programme. The club gives the boys the opportunity to develop their public speaking skills and to learn the skills necessary to organise and run effective formal meetings. There are three major aims of the course: 1. To develop the speaking abilities of the participants in a constructive and stimulating environment; 2. To assist the participants in learning how to deliver unprepared speeches; 3. To expose the participants to a formal meeting format, and the demands of fulfilling various offices in a meeting. The boys were not only required to present prepared speeches at weekly meetings but were also thrown in the deep end by having to present unprepared speeches. These “off-the-cuff” sessions were daunting at the start of the course. However, as the course drew to a close, these sessions became the source of much anticipation, laughter and interest. The growth in confidence and ability was astounding. The course culminated in the Graduation Dinner. The manner in which the boys carried out the presentation of their speeches, toasts, vote of thanks and other duties was a clear indication of their personal growth and their willingness to step out of their comfort zones in order to develop their communication and leadership skills. Thank you to the boys for embracing this experience with open arms. You all did a fantastic job!!

SPORT

CRICKET

The 1st XI has had a wonderful 3rd/4th term of cricket. The 1st XI ended the 2019 year ranked 4th overall in the SA Schools’ Cricket Rankings. Considering that we used over 20 players in 2019 due to injuries and players being away on various National tours, 2019 was a very successful year. Luke Beaufort, Tiaan Van Vuuren and Jade Smith were all included in various SA U19 squad matches over a 5 weekend period in September and October and Luke and Tiaan have been includesin the initial squad of 20 players for the U19 World Cup which takes place in January/February 2020, with Jade Smith as reserve. The final team will be chosen after the SA U19 Camp in December. Tiaan was also part of the EP Senior Provincial team that played in the Africa T20 Cup. The 1st XI, 2nd XI, 15A and U14A teams all played in annual school tournaments in the September holidays. The 1st XI had a successful Cape Schools Week in Cradock, winning 3 out of their 4 matches. A superb 4th term saw the team play some top cricket and Jade Smith capped off a wonderful year with the bat with two consecutive centuries in the final two matches of the season scoring 148 vs Woodridge and 132 vs Kingswood, this took his total runs scored for 2019 to just over 1500 runs, George van Heerden was hot on his heels with just over 1300 runs in the year, what makes this so unique and special is that these 2 young men are only in Grade 10 this year. Nick Keevy ended the season off with a brilliant 5 wicket haul against Kingswood to take him to 46 wickets at just over 13 runs per wicket and the leading wicket taker for 2019. CRICKET ACTION DURING THE HOLIDAYS : The 1st XI will play in the annual Grey Cricket Festival early next year and Grey Bloem will be hosting. We will play St Andrew’s Bloem, Affies, DHS and Maritzburg College from the 9th to 12th January. The team is as follows: Nick Keevy (Captain), Elih Thorne, Cade Cambier, Arend Visser, Michael Wicks, Ryan Oborn, Thomas Molenaar, George van Heerden, Jade Smith, James Hofmeyr, Tom Daniels, Josh Stephenson, Miki Brass, Daniel Ristow. A number of our young men will be representing Eastern Province at various levels during the holidays. EP U18 at the Khaya Majola Coca Cola U18 Schools’ Week (Natal Inland) – Luke Beaufort (Captain) Tiaan van Vuuren, Nicholas Keevy, Elih Thorne, Arend Visser and Jade Smith. RUGBY

Twizza National Champion of the Champions U15 7’s Tournament: After winning the Port Elizabeth leg of the Twizza 7’s circuit, our U15’s went to Bloemfontein in October to participate in the national championships. Their results were as follows: Group games: Beat Rustenburg 28-14; Beat DHS 29-26; Quarter-final: Lost to HTS Middelburg 28-42. Plate semi-final: Lost to DHS 28-31; 7th place play off: Beat Maritzburg College 34-17. This was a more than respectable performance to end 7th overall in the nation, a result made more impressive as we only had 9 fit players for the knock out matches.

ROWING

The first event on the season’s calendar was the annual Rowathon which took place at the Walmer Park Shopping Centre. A combined total of 468 km was covered by the Grey rowers, with the following boys rowing the furthest (in each age group): Duncan de Klerk (U15) 13 722 m; Julian Schmidt (U16) 14 665 m; Elmo van Olm 23 991 m (U19). Callum Smyth won a cash prize for raising the largest amount of money. Our beneficiary once again was the IGAZI Foundation. We presented Mr Cameron from the organisation a cheque of R15, 250 at our final assembly of the year.

The season also began with the sudden departure of Grey Rowing stalwart, Mr Benjamin Ekron, and his wife, Natasha, who left our shores to teach in Doha. Mr Jonathan van Niekerk took up the reins as Master-in-Charge, and Mr Reinhardt Oborn became the new Head Coach. They have been superbly supported by Mrs Marzane Meyer, Mr Steve van Niekerk, Mr Garett Smith, the parent committee and the coaches.

The ZRC/Grey Regatta, which took place on the first Saturday of the September holiday, was an exciting change from last year, as races were reduced from a 500-meter to a 400-meter first-ever buoyed course in a one-on-one knock-out format. It was only the Eights who raced the Heads Race of 4,000 meters. The first race saw the 1st VIII clock the exact same time as the St Andrew’s College crew. The U15 boys’ greatest moment of the day was when the A Quad raced a fantastic sprint to win gold. The U16’s entered the sprints races with vigour, with Jamie McGillivray and Jak Nel winning the A Double race. Julian Schmidt went on to beat both St Andrew’s entries and win the B Singles event. Both the U16A Four and B Four won their races. In the U19 division, the B Pair came 2nd to St Andrew’s, and the A Double experienced a narrow defeat in the semi-final. The 1st Four had an amazing victory over two St Andrew’s crews, winning by a boat length.

Two weeks later we headed off to Knysna to compete in the Knysna Midway Regatta. This regatta is a significant one as it sees all Western and Eastern Cape schools participating. The weather was superb which ensured pleasant and fair racing. The first race of the day saw Thomas Hobson winning the U15 Singles event. The U15 Quad rowed an impressive heat and finished a close 2nd in their final. The U16 rowers narrowly missed podium positions in the Quads and Fours. In the U19 division, the two Single boats beat a field of 17 to finish 4th and 5th. The 1st VIII beat Rondebosch and Bishops to place 3rd in the Heads Race.

Our last major regatta of the year was the St Andrew’s Settlers Regatta held on the Kowie River in Port Alfred. The U15 age group had a superb day of racing, winning both the Scull and Double events. They then beat all competition in the knock-outs to take both 1st and 2nd place in the Octuple race. The U16 Four won their boat class with an impressive time of 21 minutes 28 seconds over 5.5 km. The 1st VIII finished 2nd to St Andrew’s in the Heads Race, trailing by a narrow gap of 7 seconds. However, they fought hard later in the day to beat them in the sprints by half a boat length for an historic victory. The A Double secured a spectacular win against not only school boys, but university crews too.

The 1st VIII will compete in the final competition of the year, the Schools’ Boat Race, on 6th and 7th December. Praise must go to their coach, Mr Alasdair Macphail, and their manager, Mr Reinhardt Oborn, for the many hours spent mentoring and preparing them for this monumental event. Congratulations to the following boys on their selection for the 1st VIII: Ian Bales-Smith, Adam Grosse, Callum Smyth, Elmo van Olm, Jordan Morris, Anthony Adendorff, Dale Hurr, Louis van Heerden, Jared Mayer, Nicholas Cawood (Reserve). The second half of the season begins with the Rowing Camp in Port Alfred on 6th January.

SQUASH

The Grey 1st Team of 2020 attended the annual Wynberg Stayers Festival, where they comfortably beat all opposition, namely: Maritzburg College; Michaelhouse, Pretoria Boys’ and two strong invitational sides in Cape Town.

Mrs Jenna Jefferies (084 700 1203) will be leading this group of parents in 2020. They meet at 07:30 every Tuesday during the term in the Unicorn Room at Grey Junior. Your support would be valued.
