>GRETZKY= SCORESANOTHER GRADE I WIN

FOR NYQUIST IN SUMMER

Gretzky the Great (Nyquist), who became freshman sire

Nyquist (Uncle Mo)=s first stakes winner in August, became his

second Grade I winner less than a month later with a victory in

Sunday=s GI Summer S. at Woodbine. The score in the AWin and

You=re In@ event punched Gretzky the Great=s ticket to the GI

Breeders= Cup Juvenile Turf and gave Japanese-born jockey

Kazushi Kimura his first career Grade I triumph.

Unveiled going five furlongs on the local turf July 12, the

Ontario-bred was runner-up to re-opposing rival Ready to

Repeat before graduating by open lengths in an off-the-turfer

there Aug. 2. Getting up late to capture the 6 1/2-furlong

Soaring Free S. three weeks later, Gretzky the Great was made a

narrow favorite here.

Coming away well, the bay deferred to draft in behind of

Ready to Repeat in the two path for the long run up the

backstretch. Traveling comfortably past fractions of :24.10 and

:47.82, he was given just a nudge by Kimura three-eighths out

and sidled up alongside the pacesetter soon after straightening

THE WEEK IN REVIEW: AFTER GUILTY PLEAS,

WILL MORE TRAINERS BE CHARGED?by Bill Finley

The next chapter in the scandal that has rocked Thoroughbred

racing played out last week when Scott Robinson and Sarah

Izhaki both pled guilty to charges relating to the sale and

distribution of performance-enhancing drugs used to dope race

horses. It was an important development, but the bigger story is

this: will it lead to a new and extensive list of indictments

against trainers and others who so far have not been charged?

That possibility certainly exists.

For now, everything is speculation and the Department of

Justice has not said whether or not Izhaki and Robinson are

cooperating in the probe, but it's not hard to connect the dots

and come up with a scenario where the two are cooperating

with authorities and ready to name names. Cont. p11

Gretzky the Great and a jubilant Kazushi Kimura | Michael Burns

Nyquist=s Gretzky the Great Wins Summer cont. from p1

Overtaking Ready to Repeat past the three-sixteenths pole, he

quickly kicked clear while briefly lugging into his foe=s path and

cruised home much the best. An inquiry was taken into the

winner=s drifting, but the result stood.

AHe is such an amazing horse,@ said Kimura. AThrough the final

stretch, he had a tremendous explosion. He sometimes was

lugging in a little bit, but he's just still a baby. First time out it

was only five furlongs, then when he won I was like, >Oh, that

will be a stakes horse for the future.= And then winning a stakes

and now he=s got a Grade I, he's such a nice horse.@

Pedigree Notes:

Already the second Grade I winner for Darley=s first-crop

sensation Nyquist--following GI Spinaway S. victress Vequist--

Gretzky the Great is the second foal to race out of MSP Pearl

Turn. Bought by Anderson Farms for $310,000 at Keeneland

November in 2016, she has a yearling Quality Road colt and

visited Uncle Mo this spring. Broodmare sire Bernardini gained

his 10th Grade I winner with Gretzky the Great=s Summer S.

score, and the colt is bred on the same cross as Mo Town who

won the GI Hollywood Derby and is by Nyquist=s sire Uncle Mo.

Chuck Fipke=s Lady Speightspeare, named a >TDN Rising Star=

for an impressive frontrunning debut victory, backed that

distinction up with a gusty success in Sunday=s GI Natalma S. at

Woodbine, punching her ticket to the GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile

Fillies Turf in the AWin and You=re In@ event.

Unveiled as a 22-5 chance going seven furlongs over this

course Aug. 22, the chestnut dictated terms and drew away

down the lane to a 3 3/4-length graduation, with the runner-up

also finishing six clear of the remainder. Drilling a sharp five-

furlong bullet in :58 3/5 (1/7) over the Woodbine training turf

Sept. 13, she was made a fractional favorite over morning-line

choice and local Catch A Glimpse S. heroine Alda.

Breaking smartly after acting up in the gate, Lady

Speightspeare was taken into the clear by Emma-Jayne Wilson

and tracked longshot Big Big Plans from a close-up second

through splits of :23.77 and :47.92. It briefly looked as though

the frontrunner would steal away midway around the turn, but

Lady Speightspeare drew alongside her by the time heads

pointed for home. Going on with it entering the final furlong,

she was attacked late by Alda from her outside, but stayed on

strongly to hold that rival at bay.

AIn the starting gate, she acted up a little bit, but [it] was a

testament to her intent. Last time she ran, she was such a

racehorse,@ said Wilson.

AShe broke through the pack early and went to the lead with

such intent, I think it was the same thing today in the gate. She

knew it was coming, they yelled >last one,= she was anticipating

the doors to open so she popped up a little. The doors opened

and I just kind of put my hands down and the outside horse

out-stepped her the first little bit and she showed that

composure of a racehorse, she knew that she was going to get a

chance to run and I had a chance to let that horse cross over

and just put her right on her flank and she settled into stride,

got into rhythm and, man, when they started to come to her,

just like last time, she really leveled off and dug in.@

Pedigree Notes:

Now one of 116 stakes winners, 57 graded stakes winners and

19 Grade I winners for WinStar stalwart Speightstown, Lady

Speightspeare is the first black-type performer out of Lady

Shakespeare, victress of the 2009 Ontario Colleen S. over this

course and the GII New York S. and GIII Grey Goose Bewitch S. in

2010.

She is a half-sister to Perfect Shirl (Perfect Soul {Ire}), who

carried the Fipke colors to victory in the 2011 GI Breeders= Cup

Filly & Mare Turf, and a full-sister to MGISW Shakespeare, who

took the GI Woodbine Mile S. here as a 6-year-old in 2017.

Second dam Lady Shirl was a GISW over turf as well. Lady

Shakespeare has a yearling More Than Ready filly and foaled a

colt by the same sire Mar. 28 before visiting Bee Jersey.

STEADY TRADE AS BOOK 4 OPENS AT

KEENELANDby Jessica Martini

The Keeneland September Yearling Sale opened its first of two Book 4 sessions with a workmanlike day of trade in Lexington Sunday. C.J. Johnsen made the day=s highest bid, going to

$210,000 to acquire a filly by Ghostzapper (hip 2342) for his CJ Thoroughbreds. Three yearlings tied for the day=s second highest price of $190,000: a colt by Maclean=s Music and a pair of colts by first-crop sire Unified. A total of 31 yearlings brought six figures on the day.

In all, 237 yearlings sold Sunday for $11,516,500. The session average was $48,593 and the median was $40,000. The

auction=s buy-back rate continued to fall, with 85 horses

reported not sold Sunday for a buy-back rate of 26.4%.

During last year=s first Book 4 session, which was on the eighth day of sale, 272 head grossed $15,448,700 for an average of

$56,797 and a median of $41,000. The buy-back rate for the session was 27.85%.

The Keeneland September sale continues through Friday with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m.

Ghostzapper Filly to CJ Thoroughbreds Corey and C. J. Johnsen=s CJ Thoroughbreds struck late to secure a filly by Ghostzapper (hip 2342) for a session-topping

$210,000 Sunday at Keeneland. Consigned by Peter

O=Callaghan=s Woods Edge Farm, the yearling is out of multiple stakes winner Saxet Heights (Outflanker). Bred by SF Bloodstock, she was purchased by O=Callaghan for $130,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November sale.

AWe=ve been on her since yesterday and she=s kind of one of

those I kept falling in love more and more with her. So I=m glad it

worked out,@ said C. J. Johnsen.

Of the filly=s appeal, Johnsen said, AYou can=t go wrong with

Ghostzapper. And then the pedigree, the first three dams are

very strong. When I first saw it, I thought, >An Outflanker mare?=

And I thought I had to do some research on Outflanker, but it

turns out that, even though the sample size for the cross is

small, it has produced two 2-year-old winners out of the three

that have been on that cross. So the pedigree was just enough

for us to go for it because physically, she is absolutely gorgeous.@

The filly will be trained by Wesley Ward.

CJ Thoroughbreds has purchased six yearlingsBall fillies--at the

September sale, led by a $335,000 daughter of War Front (hip 5)

during the auction=s first session.

AWe race them and then we sell them as broodmares when we

retire them,@ Johnsen said of the operation. AThat=s our business

plan. We buy only fillies with strong pedigrees by proven sires

and then we sell them as broodmares. I think she is the 11th filly

we=ve bought this year and we have one more to go.@

Johnsen said he has found the Keeneland marketplace this

week to be unpredictable.

AIt=s been strange. When we=ve thought we wouldn=t be able

to afford a horse, we have been able to and then when we

thought we could afford a horse, we were blown out of the

water,@ he said. ADay one, we bought three horses and didn=t

think we=d be able to afford any of them. And we came away

with all of them for much less than we thought. And then on day

two, I don=t think we bought anything because we=d think, >Oh,

this one is going to go for $250,000,= and it goes for $450,000. So

it=s been really unpredictable.@

More Music for Robison When Jackie=s Warrior (Maclean=s Music) romped home in the

Sept. 7 GI Runhappy Hopeful S. at Saratoga, he gave owners Kirk

and Judy Robison their first Grade I winner in over two decades

in the sport. The Robisons, who purchased the colt for $95,000

at last year=s Keeneland September sale, added another colt by

Maclean=s Music to their roster when trainer Steve Asmussen

signed the ticket on their behalf at $190,000 to acquire hip 2038

Sunday at Keeneland.

ASteve Asmussen is at the sale buying for me and he trains for

me in the East,@ Kirk Robison said from his home in El Paso

Sunday afternoon. AHe loves Maclean=s Music and we have the

really good 2-year-old colt. Sometimes buyers go back to what

horses worked for them before; the same stud, the same family

and they have confidence. I think they also know what a certain

stud should look like. And if they look like that horse, I think they

like them even more.@ Cont. p9

Hip 2038 is out of stakes-placed Yes Liz (Yes It=s True) and wasconsigned by the Vanlangendonck=s Summerfield on behalf ofBarbara Banke=s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings. AStonestreet is going to stay in for half the colt,@ Robison said.ASteve called me about an hour ago and said they=d like to stayin for half. I said go ahead and we got him. We=ve never had apartner, but who is better to partner with than Stonestreet?@ Robison purchased four yearlings during Sunday=s session ofthe September sale. In addition to hip 2038, he purchased a fillyby More Than Ready (hip 2078) for $75,000, a filly by Kantharos(hip 2249) for $75,000, and a colt by Street Boss (hip 2043) for$37,000. AWe are pretty picky on the vetting. We don=t have to have aperfect vet, but we=ve got to have something that works,@Robison said of his buying goals. AThe ones that have to have achip removed right off the bat are not the kind I want. I want ahorse that can get to the races early and show us what they cando.@ Robison, who owns a string of pizza restaurants in Texas, continued, AWe are still shopping. We want horses who aregoing to be early and who are sound.@ ASteve is a pretty good judge of that and he doesn=t get toocarried away because he knows what price point I=mcomfortable with,@ Robison continued. AIf he has to stretch alittle bit, I let him do that. I don=t try to micromanage himbecause he has such a good track record.@ Asmussen is signing tickets for Robison in the name ofDownstream Racing, a tribute to the next generation of racingfans in the family. AThose are my grandchildrenBthey are getting old enough nowI got a license for all of them in California this summer to go tothe races at Del Mar, and then of course COVID hit and it=slimited,@ Robison explained. ASo Downstream Racing is ourgrandchildren and their ownership in horses now.@ Jackie=s Warrior, pointing for the Oct. 10 GI Champagne S. atBelmont Park, worked five furlongs at Saratoga Sunday in1:02.91 (10/19). AHe looks fantastic, he=s happy and I trust [assistant trainer]Scott [Blasi] and Steve get him to race on time and I think he=llrun well,@ Robison said. Of his colt=s impressive Hopeful victory, Robison said, AI hadnever had a Grade I winner until him. I=ve only been in a handfulof Grade I races and never been lucky enough to win one, so Iknow how hard it is. I don=t care how much money you=respending or what kind of mares you=re breeding, it=s hard to geta Grade I winner. So when you get one and they win so easilyand he runs a faster seven-eighths than any other Hopeful hasbeen run, and he=s so sound, it=s amazing. He won at Churchilland he won twice at Saratoga, we think he=ll run well anywhere.Hopefully he=ll run well at Belmont.@

Week in Review cont. from p1 That's the most obvious explanation for why they were given adeal by the Department of Justice. In the original indictments, which were announced in March and included 27 individuals, including high-profile trainers Jason Servis and Jorge Navarro,Robinson was charged with three counts of drug adulterationand misbranding conspiracy. The maximum sentence for eachcount is set at five years. A superceding indictment was releasedlast week in which Robinson is now charged with just one count.Izhaki was originally charged with one count of drugadulteration and misbranding conspiracy, plus a charge of

smuggling, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years. Inthe superceding indictment, the smuggling charge has beendropped. "It's a very logical assumption that they are cooperating andthat's why they have accepted the plea they did," said formerMeadowlands and Monmouth executive Hal Handel, who onceserved as a deputy attorney general in New Jersey. "It looks likethey have thrown themselves on the mercy of the justicedepartment. That seems to be where these two are." Cont. p12

Izhaki will be sentenced Dec. 2 and Robinson will be sentenced

Jan. 15. Should one or the other be hit with something

considerably less than five years, that will be another indication

that they are cooperating with authorities.

Another story to watch is what happens with Ashley Lebowitz,

who was among the 27 indicted in March. She is Izhaki's

daughter and that may mean that she, too, will make a deal.

According to owner and attorney Maggi Moss, who once

served as the chief prosecutor of Polk County, Iowa, the

give-and-take at the federal level often involves plaintiffs who

are happy to implicate others if that means a reduced sentence

for them.

"In federal court, the bigger names you get, the more names

you get, the more reliable the information is, you continue to

decrease your sentence," said Moss.

If there was ever going to be more dominos to fall after the

original 27 indictments, it always stood to reason that more

charges would come as a result of drug suppliers cooperating

with authorities. Much more so than anyone else, they know

who was using what.

"Scott Robinson and Sarah Izhaki represent the supply side of a

market of greed that continues to endanger racehorses through

the sale of performance-enhancing drugs," Acting U.S. Attorney

Audrey Strauss said last week in a statement. "Each of these

defendants provided the raw materials for fraud and animal

abuse through the sale of unregulated and dangerous

substances."

It appears that Robinson is the bigger fish of the two.

"From at least in or about 2011 through at least in or about

March 2020, Robinson conspired with others to manufacture,

sell, and ship millions of dollars worth of adulterated and

misbranded equine drugs..." read the statement from Strauss.

Robinson's business was apparently so lucrative that he has

been ordered to pay the government $3,832,318.90 as part of

an order of forfeiture/money judgment. A forfeiture is the

involuntary relinquishment of money as a legal obligation for

the commission of crime.

So far, less is known about Izhaki's business. According to the

Department of Justice's statement, between February 2018 and

November 2019, Izhaki sold and delivered "tens of thousands of

dollars of erythropoietin," which is a blood builder drug. She was

bringing the drug in from Mexico, thus the smuggling charge.

"These two people appear to be important defendants," Moss

said. "They were the ones where people were getting the drugs

from. They are important links and it would appear to me that

they obviously have lists of who they sent drugs to. You

wouldn't think they'd be doing what they were doing and only

selling their drugs to two or three people. There has to be a list

of who bought this."

That much seems certain as it's hard to imagine that the only

clients of Robinson and Izhaki were Servis and Navarro and a

handful of other Standardbred and Thoroughbred trainers

already indicted. If other trainers were buying from them, there

should be a paper trail that amounts to a lot of smoking guns.

That's particularly the case with Robinson, who was using a

website to sell his drugs to trainers. That would mean a record

of the transactions and credit card receipts.

Does that mean they sold their goods to hundreds of trainers,

dozens of trainers or just a handful? For now, that is anyone's

guess. But their plea deals have raised the possibility that the

Servis and Navarro indictments will turn out to be just the

beginning in what is already one of the ugliest stories in the

sport's history.

"If I were someone who was buying drugs from these guys, I'd

be very afraid right now," said Jeff Gural, the Meadowlands

owner who worked behind the scenes with The Jockey Club to

build a case against the cheaters. "There's no doubt in my mind

that these two (Robinson and Izhaki) are talking."

Starship Jubilee Does It Again

Starship Jubilee (Indy Wind) continues to be one of racing's

best stories. Claimed for just $16,000 (off of Jorge Navarro) in

2017, she picked up the biggest purse of her life when beating

the boys Saturday's GI Woodbine Mile S. It was her 12th stakes

win, her 19th overall win and pushed her career earnings over

$2 million.

Trainer Kevin Attard now faces a tough decision concerning

where she should run in the Breeders' Cup, with the choices

being the GI Breeders' Cup Mile or the GI Breeders' Cup Filly &

Mare Turf. Cont. p13

The Woodbine Mile was a "Win and You're In" race for the

Mile. That means Starship Jubilee is guaranteed a spot in that

race and the $60,000 entry fee will be waived. Though it's hard

to imagine any scenario where she wouldn't get into the Filly &

Mare Turf, she is not guaranteed a spot, but the entry fee would

also be waived for that race.

"Which race we go in is up in the air," Attard said. "Obviously,

we are excited because she ran a big race Saturday. She came

out of the race in great shape. We'll see how things transpire

over the next little bit and try to decipher how the two races

shape up and decide what direction we will go in."

Starship Jubilee is the best horse based in Canada and was the

2019 Canadian Horse of the Year. This year, she won't be eligible

for that title. The Woodbine Mile was her first race this year in

Canada and for a horse to be eligible for the Canadian Horse of

the Year title, they must run at least three times north of the

border.

Pirate=s Punch, controversially disqualified out of a victory in

the GIII Philip H. Iselin S. at Monmouth last month, got his

vengeance Sunday by the shore with a tally in the GIII Salvatore

Mile S. It was the first black-type win for the former $30,000

claimer.

Breaking his maiden for that tag at sixth asking for Jeff Mullins

last July at Ellis, the gelding dominated a first-level allowance at

Indiana Grand in his debut for the Grant Forster barn and

backed that up with a strong third in the GIII Super Derby.

Crushing optional claiming foes wire to wire by 11 1/2 lengths

with a 101 Beyer three starts later Jan. 16 at Fair Grounds, he

was third in the GIII Mineshaft S. and backed up to seventh in

the GII Stephen Foster S. before his demotion in the Iselin.

Off as the lukewarm favorite here, the dark bay broke in stride

and settled in third as longshot Wind of Change (Brz) (Forestry)

tore off through a :22.69 quarter. Drawing a bit closer past a

swift :45.80 half, Pirate=s Punch blew past the retreating

pacesetter three furlongs out and stiff-armed a brief bid from

second choice Top Line Growth to go clear into the stretch.

Staying in charge through the lane, he was wrapped up on late

in a convincing score. Top Line Growth dug in to best Bal

Harbour in a photo for second.

Forster said that Pirate=s Punch has earned a step up in class

for his next outing, commenting, AThe Breeders= Cup Dirt Mile is

definitely our plan based on these last two races. For us in

Kentucky, it=s a home game this year. He does have one race at

Keeneland when he ran very well as he was just starting to

improve last fall. I know the owners and I are on board. We were

treating this as our >Win and You=re In.= He won it, so I guess we

have to put our money where our mouth is and give the horse a

chance to show what he can do on the national stage.@

Pedigree Notes:

With the victory, Pirate=s Punch becomes the 33rd stakes

winner and 15th graded stakes winner for Shanghai Bobby. He is

a half-brother to Girvin, victor of the 2017 GI Haskell Invitational

S. at this oval, GSW juvenile Cocked and Loaded and Midnight

Bourbon (Tiznow), runner-up in the GIII Iroquois S. Sept. 5. His

unraced dam, a half-sister to SWs Dubini (Gio Ponti) and What a

Catch (Justin Phillip), sold to Stonestreet for $240,000 at

Keeneland November in 2015 and was represented by a yearling

Curlin colt who hammered for $500,000 to Shadwell Thursday at

Keeneland September. She produced a colt by Quality Road

Feb. 4 before returning to Curlin.

TAYLOR MADE=S STALLION PROGRAM ON

THE RISE by Katie Ritz

Since the loss of Taylor Made=s signature stallion Unbridled=s

Song seven years ago, the farm has worked to regain its footing

in the ever-evolving, ever-competitive business of stallion

development. The first step, finding prospective stallions that fit

a specific program, often proves to be the most difficult.

AWhat do you look for in a stallion?@ asked Taylor Made=s

Frank Taylor. AThe one thing we know is nobody knows who is

going to be a great stallion. If anybody tells you they do, they=re

not telling the truth.@

Ben Taylor, Vice President of Taylor Made Stallions, added

that once you find a good fit, the price tag behind the prospect

can often make consideration unrealistic.

AWe are constantly on the lookout, but the market has been

so difficult in the last few years and the competition so fierce,@

Ben said. AEverybody seems to be after the same ones and the

payouts are just so astronomical that we haven=t been able to

get some of the upper-end stallions. So we just pick our spots

and try to be ready for opportunity when it presents itself and

take advantage of it. We=re trying to get stallions that we

believe in and can get behind, but it=s tough. We really needed a

horse like Not This Time to come on.@

Not This Time (Giant=s Causeway), currently the leading first-

crop sire by winners, has been an up-and-comer to watch all

year with his offspring showing his precocity on the track while

proving to be increasingly popular at the sales.

AThey=re early, I think they=re going to go the distance and

they=re running on both surfaces,@ Ben said. AHe reminds me of

Unbridled=s Song in that he=s good-looking, his horses are

talented and are all a pretty good size. In fact, I think he may be

a little better than Unbridled=s Song from a physical standpoint

because he gets the perfect-sized horse. He=s flawless and his

babies resemble him.@ Cont. p15

Princess Noor takes the GI Del Mar Debutante S. | Benoit

Instagrand flashes to victory in the GII Best Pal S. | Benoit

Not This Time already has the clout of having sired a GISW in

>TDN Rising Star= Princess Noor, who romped to victory in the GI

Del Mar Debutante S. earlier this month.

APrincess Noor is unbelievable,@ Ben said. AThey really haven=t

asked her to run yet, so they say, so it=ll be interesting to see

what happens going forward. She=s an unbelievable talent for

sure.@

Her sire had shown the same promise as a juvenile under Dale

Romans, breaking his maiden by 10 lengths and then taking the

GIII Iroquois S. by just under nine. After a close second in the

GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile, a soft tissue injury forced the son of

Giant=s Causeway to end his racing career.

AWe=re very lucky to have Not This Time,@ Ben admitted. AIf he

would have gone on and had the opportunity to compete as a

3-year-old, we probably wouldn=t have him.@

In the same year that Taylor Made welcomed Not This Time to

their roster, they also added dual GISW Mshawish (Medaglia

d=Oro).

AHe=s a little bit under the radar, I think,@ Ben said. ABut he=s

had a few horses run really well in major maiden races with

quality fields. They=re horses that want to go longer, so a lot of

them haven=t started yet, but they=re showing a lot of talent and

I think you=re going to see more of them popping up.@

In the class following Not This Time and Mshawish, GISW

Midnight Storm=s (Pioneerof the Nile) first yearlings are now

hitting the sales ring.

Two Midnight Storm yearlings brought six figures at the Fasig-

Tipton Selected Yearlings Showcase, and several dozen

youngsters are catalogued to go through the ring in the

following days at Keeneland. His headliner at Fasig-Tipton, a colt

out of Chickasaw Gal (Indian Charlie), brought $200,000 off a

$12,500 stud fee.

AThe yearlings that have sold so far have sold well,@ Ben said.

AFrom day one, we=ve had reports from people who bred to him

say, >Hey, I got a great one. I want to breed another mare.= He=s

from a sire line that I=m really excited about and I think is going

to make a big impact going forward.@

On Sept. 11, Taylor Made announced a new addition to their

roster for 2021 in >TDN Rising Star= Instagrand, a son of top sire

Into Mischief who will stand for an initial fee of $7,500.

AI=m very excited about Instagrand because he is a powerful,

strong, good-looking horse and he=s by Into Mischief, who is just

dominating the business right now,@ Frank said. AInstagrand=s

first two starts were unbelievable. The greatest stallions, I think,

have brilliance.@

A $1.2 million joint sale-topping purchase for Larry Best=s OXO

Equine at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale, the flashy colt

broke his maiden in near record-breaking fashion at Los

Alamitos and then took the GII Best Pal S. at Del Mar by over 10

lengths. After a layoff, the sophomore placed in two graded

stakes including the GI Santa Anita Derby.

Frank said he believes that one of the keys to Instagrand=s

early success at stud will be the support he receives from first-

time stallion owner Larry Best.

AInstagrand has OXO Stallions behind him and Larry is very

excited,@ he said. AHe=s going to support him with a lot of mares,

and he=s going to buy his weanlings and yearlings at the sales. So

he believes in the horse fully and is going to put his power

behind him, which is going to be a great thing for breeders. We

think he=s got a really big shot.@

Frank reflected on the eventful season it has been for the

Taylor Made Stallions program.

success. We=ve gotten really lucky and blessed now to have Not

This Time and to have Midnight Storm and Mshawish coming

up. We=re really excited to add Instagrand to the program.@

Ben agreed that in the game of making stallions, luck is always

a major player.

AWe=ve been very fortunate to have the success we have had

with the limited number of stallions. We=ve had Saint Ballado,

Unbridled=s Song and Forestry. Something I always ask to myself

is >How many times are you going to be lucky?= And it takes luck

KEENELAND GRADS MAKING PRESENCE

FELT IN RUSSIA

by Alan Carasso

While the marquee horses and seven-figure fireworks are long

since in the rear-view mirror when the Keeneland September

Sale--the largest of its kind in the world--reaches its later books,

there are still horses to be sold, even as the demand for those

youngsters could begin to wane. Several years ago, in an effort

to drum up interest in the latter stages of the sale, officials at

the Lexington auction house began mining smaller, off-the-

beaten-path markets, and those efforts have borne fruit in

places like Russia, where Lyudovik (Constitution) became the

fourth Keeneland graduate since 2014 to prevail in the $55,000

Russian Derby (RUS-G1, 2400m) at the historic Central Moscow

Hippodrome last month.

ADating back to long before I was here, we have made a

concerted effort to find owners and trainers in emerging

markets to get them to come and buy their Thoroughbreds here

at Keeneland,@ said Chip McGaughey, son of Hall of Fame trainer

Shug McGaughey, who joined Keeneland in 2015 and acts as a

liaison to these smaller racing jurisdictions. AObviously you can

see that it=s had dividends with the success we=ve had in certain

of those markets.@

Lyudovik, who became his sire=s second winner overall when

graduating at first asking in domestic Group 3 company at

Moscow last May, was bred by Pope McLean, Marc McLean,

Pope McLean, Jr. and Phil Hager and was purchased out of the

2018 September sale for $40,000 by Marc-Antoine Berghracht=s

M.A.B. Agency on behalf of his client Edward Mordukovich.

AMr. Mordukovich is very keen on pedigrees and especially

stallions and he follows American racing much more than I do,@

the French agent explained. AThe Constitutions are pretty

special-looking horses and I said to him, >We must buy one.= He

quite liked that horse too, so we decided to go for one.@

He continued, AMost of the racing in Russia is on dirt, and for

that reason, I like to buy those horses in America at Keeneland.

Conditions [in Russia] can be pretty tough and sometimes it isn=t

very easy keeping them sound, so I would not be very keen on

those big, scopey kinds of horses. I probably tend to focus more

on the European-type horse, but those that have a pedigree for

dirt.@

A winner of two of his four starts at two, Lyudovik--a son of

Speightlass (Speightstown)--returned from an 11-month

absence to finish a strong second in a local Group 2 over 2000

meters July 25 and accounted for fellow KEESEP grad Whiskey

Lemon Bars (Lemon Drop Kid--Film Maker {Dynaformer},

$40,000 yearling purchase) by a half-length in the Derby Aug. 16

AHe=s always complaining about the horses we bought that

didn=t turn out, and I say to him, >Hang on, what about this one?

What about that one? What about Lyudovik?= and he goes,

>You=re right,=@ Berghracht said of Mordukovich. AAnd then we

won the Derby and everything is fine. He=s a character. He=s a

big fan of horses, he loves the game. He also races

Standardbreds and Arabians. He=s a great ambassador.@

Also on behalf of Mordukovich, Berghracht signed a ticket on a

son of Commissioner just two hips prior to purchasing Lyudovik

during session nine of the 2018 September Sale. Snapped up for

just $6,000, Bud= Geroem broke his maiden in a domestic Group

2 race over the metric mile last September and added the

Season Opening S. (RUS-G3) at nine furlongs first off the layoff

May 17 (video, #6).

AWe have a limited budget for Russia--we=re used to spending

between $20,000 and max $70,000 or $80,000,@ Berghracht

commented. ASo Lyudovik was right in the middle of our range.@

In most any line of business, the repeat customer is coveted,

and given the success of Keeneland graduates in Russia, the

clients are only too happy to return, hoping that lightning will

strike twice. In a COVID-abbreviated racing season in 2020,

some 32 Keeneland sales graduates have won Russia=s major

events--10 at Group 1 level, 15 Group 2 winners and 12 Group 3

winners. And, in what was almost certainly a landmark

achievement for the country, Tuz (Oxbow), a $7,000 graduate of

the 2018 September sale who won his two starts at Pyatigorsk

Racecourse by a combined margin of nearly 40 (yes, 40) lengths,

ran a blinder to be second in the Listed Al Bastakiya S. at

Meydan in Dubai this past March (video).

AIt=s a competitive landscape. Everyone wants to have their

market share and American Thoroughbreds have proven to

excel on dirt surfaces around the world,@ McGaughey said. AIf

they have success and their industry grows, they may start out

just buying $5,000 horses, but that is twenty $5,000 horses that

maybe otherwise would not have had a home. As their market

continues to grow, they=re going to be inclined to come back to

that source of success they had initially.@

Just five years ago, Russian interests acquired 60 horses for

gross receipts of $1.7 million ($28,333 average), not an

insignificant sum of money deep into the sale. Last year, they

purchased no fewer than 112 horses for $4.1 million ($36,607

average). McGaughey is confident the trend will continue in a

positive direction.

AThe industry over there is definitely growing and they have

made strides,@ he said. AThey=ve been working to try to become

part of the IFHA [International Federation of Horseracing

Authorities], the French PMU has set up their tote system and

simulcasting throughout different regions.@

Foreign participation at this year=s September Sale is likely to

be limited by travel restrictions currently in place, but

McGaughey expects Russian interests to remain just as active as

years past.

AWith the pandemic, international sales are going to be down,

but optimistically for the Russian market, there are currently no

JESUS= TEAM TO BE SUPPLEMENTED TO

PREAKNESS Grupo 7C Stable's Jesus' Team (Tapiture), third in the GII Jim

Dandy S. and fourth in the GI TVG.com Haskell Invitational S.,

will be supplemented to the GI Preakness S. Oct. 3 at Pimlico.

The decision was made, said trainer Jose D'Angelo, after the

$30,000 Keeneland September buy breezed a half-mile Saturday

at Monmouth Park in :47.80.

"I explained to the owner the races [available] to him and he

thinks the best decision was to run in the Preakness," D'Angelo

said. "He worked four furlongs very well. He's very, very good

right now, and the Preakness is a great race for us."

D'Angelo said Jesus' Team, named after the owner's son,

would work again next weekend at Monmouth before heading

to Pimlico.

Jesus' Team broke his maiden in a $32,000 claiming event

Mar. 18 at Gulfstream Park and won a claiming race May 8

before finishing second behind GII Tampa Bay Derby runner-up

Sole Volante (Karakontie {Jpn}) by three-quarters of a length

June 10 at Gulfstream in an allowance/optional claiming event.

The bay then headed to Monmouth, finishing fourth behind

GI Kentucky Derby winner Authentic (Into Mischief), in the

OAK HILL (c, 3, Distorted Humor--Tabarin, by El Prado {Ire})

won July 18 at Saratoga when stretched out to a mile after being

outkicked in his June debut at Churchill going 5 1/2 panels, but

was unruly in his allowance return Aug. 16, resulting in Javier

Castellano wrapping up on him well before the finish as he

faded more than 40 lengths behind the winner. It was a

different story Sunday as he bounced out of the gate and kindly

stalked from the outside behind fractions of :23.78 and :48.52.

Oak Hill collared the leader on the turn and went on by to score

by a length as the favorite at nearly 3-1. Falkirk (Cairo Prince)

closed for the runner-up spot. The winner is a full to Abraham,

JOHNY'S FIREBALL (c, 2, Tonalist--Sweet Emma Rose {SW-USA,

GSP-Eng, $137,997}, by City Zip), third going a mile over the Ellis

turf Aug. 8, faded to fifth while trying the dirt here Sept. 2.

Getting blinkers off while returning to the sod this time, the 9-5

choice settled in a midpack sixth early as Command Central

(Kitten=s Joy) cut out a quarter in :24.06. Sensing a pokey pace

up front, Gabe Saez caught up with the leader, who had

dawdled through a half mile in :51.01. Taking control turning for

home, Johny=s Fireball opened up a two-length cushion but saw

that dwindle down to a head as 16-1 Ethical Judgement (Honor

Code) closed late. The pacesetter rounded out the trifecta. A

stakes winner in the U.S. and runner up in Royal Ascot=s G2

DECADE (f, 2, California Chrome--Emma Carly, by Unbridled's

career debut at Ellis Aug. 15. Firster Color of Dawn (Exaggerator)

jumped to the lead early and Decade was hustled into a stalking

position through an initial quarter in :22.82. Asked for more by

Ricardo Santana Jr. leaving the far turn, the heavy favorite

collared Color of Dawn and was on equal terms with her rival

turning for home. Despite running greenly while remaining on

her wrong lead through the length of the stretch, Decade held

on to a neck advantage over Color of Dawn at the wire. Decade

is the fifth winner for her GI Kentucky Derby and GI Preakness S.

IRISH YEARLING SEASONBEGINS IN NEWMARKET

By Daithi Harvey

The symbiotic relationship between the Irish and British racing

and bloodstock industries has never been so evident as it is on

Monday as the Irish yearling sale season gets underway at Park

Paddocks in Newmarket with the relocated Tattersalls Ireland

September Yearling Sale.

As has been the case so far this year with other bloodstock

sales and indeed other global industries, expectations have been

tempered as travel restrictions and economic woes have

understandably had and will continue to have a detrimental

effect on the selling of future racehorses. Participants, however,

will wholeheartedly agree any trade is better than no trade and

in the midst of challenges the bloodstock industry has held up

remarkably well.

The team at Tattersalls Ireland have little reason to believe

such resilience will desert them over the next few days as they

facilitate the selling of a strong book of yearlings, many whose

causes have been aided by the exploits of some high-achieving

siblings and graduates of this sale, with recent G1 Matron S.

winner Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) heading that roll

of honour. Simon Kerins, Tattersalls Ireland's Marketing

Director, while mindful of world events, is nevertheless positive

in his outlook. Cont. p2

TDN Q&A WITH EDDIE LINEHAN With the yearling sales now in full swing, TDN quizzes industry

figures on past purchases, life during lockdown and their

perspective on the sales over the next few weeks. Today, Eddie

Linehan answers our questions.

TDN: What was your best yearling purchase over the last few

years? And your favourite?

EL: [G1 Matron S. winner] Champers Elysees (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus})

was the best I've ever signed for. She was late on the third day

of the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale and was a

standout yearling that day. Johnny Murtagh had loved her and

was gone home by the time she was in the ring so I bid on her.

My favourite yearling was a Piccolo (GB) filly called Nantany

(GB). She was an 800gns purchase in my first year buying

breezers. She went on to win a listed race in Germany and was

stakes placed a few times. Cont. p4

PROMOTING THE SALE HAS HAD ITS

CHALLENGES THIS YEAR BUT

THANKFULLY A LOT OF PREVIOUS

GRADUATES HAVE DONE THE TALKING

FOR US ON THE TRACK.Simon Kerins

Irish Yearling Season Cont. from p1

"It's all systems go and we are very fortunate to be able to

relocate the sale to Newmarket," Kerins said. "The UK is our

biggest market for this sale and

while it's disappointing to have

to move from Ireland we really

had no choice and vendors

understand this and have been

very flexible and supportive.

Park Paddocks is obviously a

fantastic facility and having

made the decision quite early to

relocate we've had time to re-do

the stabling plan and have

everything sorted," he added.

Kerins continued, "Promoting

the sale has had its challenges

this year but thankfully a lot of

previous graduates have done the talking for us on the track and

we're delighted that there are so many siblings to these high

achievers catalogued this week. Speaking to trainers, the

majority are committed to buying, some perhaps on a lesser

scale but the catalogue is condensed this year so we are

optimistic that trade will be at a very respectable level. We are

hoping also the change in venue will see us welcoming back

some UK buyers who haven't been to our Fairyhouse complex in

a while.

AWe are very aware of the challenges people face currently

but horse sales have stood the test of time and given the way

the industry has coped so far this year, coupled with the

strength of the catalogue, gives us all encouragement that we

will have a solid, successful sale."

Last year's edition of the Tattersalls Ireland September

Yearling Sale has already unearthed the Group 2-winning pair of

juvenile fillies Dandalla (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) and Aloha Star

(Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}).

Potential buyers can look forward to the chance of buying a

half-sibling to each of these fillies this week though no doubt

such investors will have to prepare for a larger outlay than the

i22,000 and i67,000, respectively, it cost to acquire their

illustrious relatives last year.

Dandalla's breeder Robert

Norton will offer a Divine

Prophet (Aus) half-sister (lot 83)

to the G3 Albany S. and G2

Duchess Of Cambridge S. winner

through Newtownbarry House

Stud, while early in the session

Collegelands Stud offers a

half-brother to G2 Airlie Stud S.

winner Aloha Star by

Mastercraftsman (Ire) as lot 4.

Both yearlings are out of young

mares who have produced a

high-class horse early in their

breeding career, giving the pedigrees scope for even further

improvement in the coming years.

As mentioned above, Johnny Murtagh purchased G1 Coolmore

America 'Justify' Matron S. winner Champers Elysees (Ire) in this

sale two years ago for i28,000 and her dam Le Cuvee (GB)

(Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) is represented this time around by lot

222, a colt by red-hot sire Mehmas (Ire). Offered by Beechvale

Stud the colt was pinhooked as a foal at Goffs for i19,000 and

is likely to show a good profit for connections.

A major pedigree update is something that fuels the dreams of

pinhookers and another yearling whose value has increased

significantly since being purchased last year is lot 309 from

Coole House Farm. The Tamayuz (GB) filly was bought by BBA

Ireland for 11,000gns at Tattersalls last year but last month her

year-older brother Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) delivered the

mother of all updates when winning the G2 Gimcrack S. at York

in impressive fashion.

While the breeders of Minzaal and this filly, Ringfort Stud, are

missing out on selling the Tamayuz filly, they can take solace

from the addition of another high-class black type winner to the

pedigree of their lot 230. This filly by first-crop sire Galileo Gold

(GB) is a half-sister to this month's G2 Flying Childers S. winner

Ubettabelieveit (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) among three other stakes

winners so lacks nothing in terms of pedigree.

York's Ebor meeting also provided a major boost to the

prospects of lot 165 from Boherguy Stud. The Jim Bolger-bred

Teofilo (Ire) colt already has plenty going for him being a

full-brother to G3 Eyrefield S. winner Guaranteed but his

2-year-old full-sibling Gear Up (Ire) added a further touch of

class to the page when he won the G3 Acomb S. at York for

trainer Mark Johnston.

The updates kept coming for Clare Manning's Boherguy Stud

when her grandfather Jim Bolger=s New Treasure (Ire) (New

Approach {Ire}) landed the G3 Heider Family Stables Round

Tower S. at The Curragh at odds of 66-1. Manning has the colt's

full-brother catalogued on Tuesday as lot 260.

Fillies by Kingman (GB) could well become collectors' items in

years to come and there are two opportunities in the sale to

acquire one. Lot 98 from The Castlebridge Consignment has a

pure Juddmonte pedigree hailing from the famous family of

Hasili (Ire) (Kahyasi {Ire}) and Intercontinental (GB) (Danehill)

and her dam Continental Drift (Smart Strike)'s only runner from

two horses of racing age is the promising Ger Lyons-trained

Masen (GB) (Kingman {GB}), a debut winner at Leopardstown

and group placed subsequently. The other Kingman filly is from

Luke Barry's Manister House Stud and lot 248 is a half-sister to

multiple stakes winner Justineo (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) from

the fast family of Galeota (Ire) (Mujadil). Cont. p4

Irish Yearling Season Cont.

Yearlings from first-crop stallions can often provide value,

especially if the stallion boasts solid credentials. Churchill (Ire)

and Caravaggio certainly fall into that category as multiple

Group 1 winners with top-class pedigrees to back up their race

records. Champion European 2-year-old and dual Guineas

winner Churchill has a pair of colts in the sale including lot 57

from The Castlebridge Consignment. This chestnut is out of the

stakes performer Blue Angel (Ire) (Oratorio {Ire}) and is a

half-brother to Listed Dee S. winner Viren's Army (Ire) (Twirling

Candy) who topped this sale in 2014 when selling to Peter and

Ross Doyle for i115,000.

Joe Hernon's Castletown Stud offers lot 65, one of three

yearlings by G1 Commonwealth Cup winner Caravaggio in the

sale. The grey grandson of Scat Daddy is out of the Sadler's

Wells mare Bright Birdie (Ire) who has already produced the

multiple stakes winner Flying Fairies (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor

{Ire}).

Nicky Teehan of Bluegate Stud could be in for another good

payday courtesy of his former mare Bulrushes (GB). The mare,

who Teehan sold privately last year to Al Wasmiyah Farm, has

bred three stakes winners, the most recent being Ten Year

Ticket (Ire) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) who carried Teehan's colours

to victory in a listed race at Leopardstown in June before being

sold to race in Hong Kong. The mare's latest offering, lot 72, is a

colt by Red Jazz, making him a full-brother to Snazzy Jazzy (Ire),

who along with a French Group 3 win also won the valuable

Tattersalls Ireland Sales Race in 2017.

Selling gets underway at 11 a.m. on Monday and 10 a.m. on

Tuesday with Part II of the sale commencing directly after the

main sale finishes on Tuesday. As has been the case for many

years all lots catalogued are eligible for the aforementioned

i300,000 Tattersalls Ireland Super Auction Sale S. to be run at

The Curragh in 12 months= time.

With Eddie Linehan Cont. from p1

TDN: Are there any positives you have taken from how the

sales have been conducted this year?

EL: Sales have been much the same really bar the masks and

keeping your distance from people. All concerned are working

hard and it seems to be working well. Cont. p5

Eddie Linehan=s Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale purchase

Champers Elysees winning the Matron | racingfotos.com

With Eddie Linehan Cont.

TDN: How has your business adapted?

EL: I haven't had to adapt too

much so far bar trying to be as

selective as possible. I have

been busy buying my own

breeze-up horses and a few

yearlings for Johnny Murtagh.

TDN: In general what are your

thoughts on the 2020 yearling

catalogues? And what new

stallions= progeny are you

most looking forward to?

EL: All the catalogues so far

have been good. I was very

impressed with the Tattersalls Ascot sale recently. On paper the

Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale looks strong so I'm

really looking forward to that.

I've been very impressed with the Ribchesters (Ire) I have seen

so far. There have been some nice horses by Profitable (Ire) and

Cotai Glory (GB) too.

TDN: Did you develop any new interests or hobbies during

lockdown?

EL: No new hobbies during

lockdown bar eating a lot more

as my sister Kate and fiancee

Ellen were off work and it was

like a bake off every day. I had

plenty of help mucking out

though so I wasn't complaining.

TDN: Who's the most

interesting person you know?

EL: The most interesting person

I know is Eugene O' Sullivan.

He's a remarkable man.

TDN: What's one mistake (if any) you have made in your

career, and what did you learn from it?

The Lir Jet | Scoop Dyga

With Eddie Linehan Cont.

EL: I've made lots of mistakes but last year I said I wasn't going

to buy anything unless I really loved it. I bought two in particular

that I only half-liked as the money was ok and neither worked

out great.

MIDDLE PARK NEXT FOR THE LIR JET Group winner The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince of Lir {Ire}) will resurface

in the G1 Middle Park S. at Newmarket on Sept. 26. The Qatar

Racing runner was originally slated for a return in the G2 Flyer

Childers S. earlier this month, but was a non-runner that day.

After winning the G2 Norfolk S. at Royal Ascot in June, the colt

missed by only a short head in the G2 Prix Robert Papin at

Chanitlly in mid-July and was third promoted to second in the

Aug. 9 G1 Phoenix S.

AWe just felt five furlongs on drying ground wouldn=t

necessarily be his thing,@ said conditioner Michael Bell. AWe had

the Middle Park as an alternative and, all being well, we=ll head

to Newmarket.

AI=m sure it will be a very good race, but the horse is in very

good form and good order, so we=re looking forward to it.

Hopefully Newmarket will produce a nice, safe surface for

everybody, which I=m sure they will.@

Also making his next start in the Middle Park is undefeated

Listed Rose Bowl S. hero Method (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}). The colt

opened his account with a 4 1/4-length win in a Doncaster

novice affair in June prior to his listed win on July 18 for owner

Manton Park Racing.

AHe=s doing his final bits of prep for that and, at the moment,

it=s all systems go for Saturday,@ said trainer Martyn Meade.

AEverything is going to plan. He=s definitely on course for that.

He=s fine and we=re hoping for a big run from him. It=s very

exciting and we=d love to win that to make a miserable season a

bit better.@

QUIAN STARS AT DORTMUND Out of his depth when sixth in the G3 Prix Gladiateur at

ParisLongchamp last time Sept. 6, Stall Hornoldendorf=s Quian

(Ger) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) was back in familiar waters on

Sunday as he proved too strong in the G3 RaceBets Deutsches St

Leger at Dortmund. Previously successful in the Listed

Hoppegartener Steher-Preis July 19, the 13-5 shot was settled in

fourth early by Lukas Delozier and drew on his abundant

stamina in the straight to earn the lead approaching the furlong

marker and assert for a two-length verdict over Sommelier

(Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}).

Pedigree Notes Quian=s dam Quiana (Ger) (Monsun {Ger}) is kin to the profilic-

winning champion Quijano (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}), whose

exploits included the G1 Grosser Preis der Baden and two

renewals of the G1 Gran Premio di Milano as well as multiple

placings at the highest level in North America. The third dam

Quest of Fire (Fr) (Rainbow Quest) is a half-sister to the G3 Prix

Cleopatre-winning producer Brooklyn=s Dance (Fr) (Shirley

Heights {GB}) whose six black-type winners are headed by the

G1 Prix de l=Arc de Triomphe heroine Solemia (Ire) (Poliglote

{GB}). This is also the family of the G1 Poule d=Essai des

Pouliches and G1 Sussex S.-winning first-season sire The Gurkha

(Ire) and the G1 Epsom Derby-winning sire Authorized (Ire)

Montjeu {Ire}). Quiana=s unraced 2-year-old colt by Helmet (Aus)

is named Quizzer (Ire), while she also has a yearling filly by

Highland Reel (Ire).

Unstoppable last term, Square de Luynes may have needed his

reintroduction when third in Ovrevoll=s G3 Marit Sveaas

Successful by seven lengths in this 12 months ago, the AFrankel

brought off the repeat making all under regular rider Pat

Cosgrave. Also the winner of the 12-furlong G3 Oslo Cup at

The very fast and now Group 3 winner 2-year-old filly

Plainchant (Fr) (Gregorian {Ire}BNadinska {GB}, by Doyen {Ire})

has a learned name straight out of the Early Middle Ages.

APlainchant is a form of medieval church music that involves

chanting or words that are sung, without any instrumental

accompaniment@, according to Wikipedia, and a Gregorian chant

is its more popular and famous variation, often credited by

legend to Pope Gregory I (590-604). The stallion Gregorian is by

Clodovil (Ire), whose name may be an alteration or a reference

to the name of Clovis, the first king of the Franks (died 511) and

founder of the Merovingian dynasty (later maligned as les rois

fainJants). This talented young filly is trained by Maurizio

Guarnieri, a member of the up and coming group of Italian

trainers in France--a migration phenomenon that, in general

terms, is both new and old: some Latin cousins from beyond the

Alps have historically done well in France. Napoleone

Buonaparte, Amedeo Modigliani and Yves Montand come to

mind.
