Throughout February the new Gresford NSW website will be ‘live testing’ and this is your opportunity to participate and have your business or event listed. The site will be updated and

modified to include information and suggestions from the Gresford community, visitors and website users. In particular if you are an event organiser or business/service provider there are forms provided on the site to submit details for inclusion in the calendar listings and service directory.

The website is an initiative of the Gresford Community Group, who sought and received funding for the development of the site from the NSW Government through the Small Communities Awareness Fund, Department of Primary Industries, Office of Rural Affairs. The site, designed by Jane Richens and Brian Doherty of Tabbil Forest Design, aims to be a central contact point for information on events, organisations and community issues, highlighting local services and attractions. The Community Group believes the website will play a role in increasing visitation to the region but also promote local businesses to the community and provide lots of information that locals will find useful, especially the new arrivals.

Content on the site already includes maps of the area, weather information, historical information event and meeting calendars (a must if you are planning something), major events listings and business and services directory.

The Community Group would like the site to be as inclusive as possible so all listings will initially be free. Down the track charges will apply on a cost recovery basis to keep the site updated.

So have a look around, check out what is currently included then use the forms provided to send in your suggestions, changes and listings.

Moves to build an indoor, heated swimming pool in Gresford step into second gear in March after the steering committee achieved extensive community support for ‘Project Splash’.

For the last 12 months the group, comprising Julie Hartigan, Kel Merriman, Peter Hill, Joe Thompson and Fr Stephen Moore, has been exploring opportunities for this exciting new venture.

It has now formed a Coalition of Support of organisations committed in principle to the project, and comprising :• Gresford Community Group• Gresford Pre-school and Play Group• Gresford Public School P&C• Gresford RSL sub-branch• Gresford CWA• Gresford Park Trust

• Vacy Play Group• Paterson Public School P&C• Paterson Pre-school• Paterson Rotary

The steering committee is holding a meeting on 15 March at St Anne’s Church Hall at 7pm to form a standing committee to put together the feasibility study. Anyone interested is very welcome to come along; a representative from each of the Coalition partners is being asked to attend.

According to the committee, the public pools at Dungog and Clarence Town both run at a significant loss.

However, the model for the proposed Gresford pool is substantially different: it would only open on demand; be purpose-built to assist the elderly,

injured and disabled; be heated and enclosed; and concentrate on providing learn-to-swim classes for children of all ages throughout the year.

The State’s largest public swimming pool operator, the YMCA, has given the steering committee a preliminary business review of the project.

It estimates the cost of the construction of the 25m x 30m building, pool and facilities at $592,565, to be met by grants from State and Federal authorities, corporate sponsorship and public donation.

YMCA’s business case suggests 200-400 learn-to-swim students per term would generate $80,000-$160,000 annually for an operating cost of $33,000, excl. staff.Contact: Fr Stephen 0411 406 522

Farewell friendsIn the last few weeks, the Gresford Community Group has said goodbye to two of its strong supporters. Both of whom were notable achievers and people who gave of their time and energy for the betterment of Gresford and the surrounding district.

The first to go was Her Honour, Judge Mahla Pearlman. Her extraordinary contribution to the law and the arts over 50 years has been covered elsewhere in the media. She received first an AM and lather an AO and was honoured for other achievements by the NSW State Government and the Law Society.

From the Community Group’s point of view, Mahla was a person who understood that if citizens work for the betterment of their community, the result will be a better community. Mahla gave her support to numerous community organisations, would always lend a hand when asked or indeed would just turn up to help. She didn’t mind getting her hands dirty but was equally willing to have a word in the right ear if the help of a highly placed person was needed. All sides of politics knew her and I know various of our local organisations will sorely miss her willingness to speak to someone in the right place. Goodbye good friend and good citizen from us all.

More recently John Edmonds passed away unexpectedly. John, along with the late Clem Varley, Robert Richardson and Paul Wilson were founders of the Gresford Community Group. At the time, the NAB had announced its closure, the dairy industry was on its knees and local businesses were doing it very tough. Some of the founders remembered or knew about the Gresford of the 50s & 60s. Three garages, a picture theatre, three butchers, a bakery, hardware store, monthly cattle sale and over forty thriving dairy farms. They knew those days could not be brought back. But they were not going to let the town die.

John Edmonds was at the forefront of the fight back. The founders secured the Rural Transaction Centre and replacement banking service. John personally began the local Australia Day celebrations and awards. He believed in the Hunter Valley and with others brought about the building of the terraces and Rose Point Centre at Singleton. At the time of his death, his faith in Gresford and his love of its ambience, was being clearly demonstrated by the 26 lot subdivision right next to East Gresford. Vale to a man of vision.

The Community Group decided some years ago, that recognition of members of our local community who put time, effort and helpfulness into the local community should be acknowledged on Australia Day.

These humble awards are not meant to compete with the Shire awards. They are a way for the Gresford community to say thank you to members of Gresford organisations who have worked tirelessly for years helping to make Gresford a better place to live and raise a family.

The following were recognised with awards this year:Jenny Crouch nominated by Gresford RSLVal Webeck nominated by St Anne’s Womens’ GuildLyn Jupp nominated by Gresford Public SchoolAmorelle Dempster nominated by Gresford CWABarry and Marie Gibson nominated by the Gresford Community Group

There was also special recognition of the contributions of friends who have recently passed away, John Edmonds and Mahla Pearlman AO and the late Ted Murrell who was officially recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to the community of Dungog Shire, to local government, and to emergency service organisations.

Community Group President Martin Addison recalled how John Edmonds was personally involved with setting up the first Gresford Australia Day function where 115 people attended in a marquee set up at his home. He also thanked Denise Carlson for the excellent table decoration, the Beatty Hotel staff and Chef for a superb lunch and the community group members who helped to make the day a success.

The 80th Gresford Show Ball celebrated all those who have

contributed to make the show as fabulous and wonderful as it has been over the past 80 years.

Well done... so let the party begin!

ShowgirlThe 2011 Gresford Showgirl Sallie Pilgrim will represent the area at this year’s Zone final in Lithgow in mid-February. Sallie is excited to be given another chance to be the ambassador for our community and we wish her well.

Finding a new Showgirl at this time of year has proved challenging so the organisers have decided to restructure the local competition. From now on a Showgirl will be selected around show time in March, to be eligible for the zone finals early the next year. It is felt this will give the girls more time to settle into the role, and learn more about the community they represent.

Showgirl Coordinators Penny Evans and Emma Badgery plan to run another competition in March to coincide with the 80th show, already there has been strong interest with six nominations. A junior competition for girls aged 14-17 will also be held at this time.

Those who plan to enter need to have forms back to the organisers by February 17th. If you or anyone you know is keen to have a go, contact Penny Evans on0437604206, or by email at [email protected]

Year 5/6 students each year research Australian military history and in

2011 the focus was on the Battle of Fromelles. They are also encouraged to undertake family research and three students presented this eloquently at the Gresford Community Armistice Day Service.

Due to space constraints only 2 of the presentations were able to be printed in the December News. The 3rd is included below.

Lieutenant Rupert Vance MoonBy Saban Bevan Moon

Rupert Vance Moon was my grandfather’s great uncle and a brave man who fought in World War 1 which was a very cruel war. He was born on the 14th of August 1892 at Bacchus Marsh Victoria and grew up in the Gippsland area.

He had been in the Militia and in 1914 enlisted to the light horse brigade. He was sent to Gallipoli, and then in 1916 he was transferred to the 58th Australian Infantry Battalion to replace recent losses.

He fought bravely throughout the war

and on the 12th of May, 1917 near Bullecourt in the Somme River region of France, Rupert was given the task to destroy a concrete machine gun shelter which was in the enemy trenches. Rupert was wounded early in the battle but successfully led his men to the shelter. Rupert then organised an attack although being wounded a second time. He then organised another attack with a Lewis gun team to bring effective damage on the Germans which caused the Germans to retreat. Rupert and his team followed but they were held back. Rupert then ordered grenades to be thrown at the enemy who where sheltering.

With some other men Rupert attacked the Germans and forced them into dug-outs where they were effectively trapped. As reinforcements came to mop up, Rupert and two other fellow officers decided to withdraw some men a short distance to escape the sniper fire. Just before the move was carried out Rupert was shot in the jaw. He insisted on seeing his men set up in a new position before he was taken to the first aid post. He had been wounded a total of four times.

Throughout this ordeal it was later reported that he never gave up, and was

heard to be continually calling out “come on boys” to inspire and encourage his men on even though he was badly wounded. One of his men later said that “we would have followed him anywhere”.

Rupert Vance Moon returned to Australia but went back to Europe and served as a temporary Captain till the end of the war.

The Victoria Cross is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime. Rupert was awarded this medal for his bravery during the battle in France. He also achieved service medals and other various medals from the royal family.

After returning home he worked as a bank accountant. He was eventually one of the last surviving Victoria Cross holders of the war. He died on the 28th of February 1986. And was laid to rest at Mt. Duneed cemetery Victoria.

For me to learn that a member of my family fought so bravely in such a terrible war has made me realize how lucky we are today.

Lest we forget. We will remember them.

Need an idea for your short film for the Gresford Show’s new video competition? Here are some famous short outlines, just to inspire you.

When a housewife pulls some hair clogging up her sink she hauls out a beautiful young man. A boy plays with his toy tanks in a South Korean town, unaware that tragic news about his father is being delivered to his home. The history of leisure, told in cartoon form. A girl gets in terrible trouble from her squabbling parents when she chucks an orange peel out the car window. A hunter chases a rabbit named Bugs through the countryside. The journey of a coin after it’s been dropped in the street. Images of a rain-storm from the first drops till the sun comes out. A bunch of pizza delivery lads tell tall stories about pizzas.

Barrington Tops featured in a recent Australian Geographic

From ancient forests, to roaring waterfalls and brimming creeks, the Barrington Tops is a nature haven and is being featured in a recent edition of the Australian Geographic magazine.

“The featuring of the Barrington Tops in Australian Geographic is another great chance to showcase the positive aspects of the World Heritage listed Barrington Tops National Park” says Dungog Shire Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Co-ordinator Ivan Skaines. Ivan works closely with Gloucester Visitor Information Centre Tourism Manager Wendy Hughes in promoting the area, with the aim of increasing visitation to both Dungog and Gloucester Shires.

The article highlights the natural features of the area and calls it a naturalist’s and bushwalker’s haven, little altered by time. Wendy says “we were pleased to be able to be associated with such a high quality publication. The standard of both the story and the accompanying images are first class. And a number of tourism operators and groups from the Dungog and Gloucester Shires have advertised in this edition, with the aim of attracting readers to visit the area.”

Joanna Egan, was the Australian Geographic staff writer involved in preparing the story. Joanna says she was most impressed with “the dramatic range in altitude, while the variety of ecosystems that exist side by side in the Barrington Tops National Park is alluring. From vine-tangled rainforests and towering eucalypt stands to snow-gum country and sub-alpine swampland, the Barrington Tops has it all. This means visitors have the opportunity to encounter a diverse range of wildlife.”

And Joanna’s thoughts about future challenges? “The balancing act of looking after the natural environment, while providing visitor experiences that don’t detract from the wilderness qualities of the park is currently managed well, however this will continue to be a challenge in the future”, says Jo.

The shire’s newest educator, Dungog Community College, is about to launch its first program and it has something for everyone, from career-building courses to fascinating bush walks, from arts & crafts to business “toolboxes”.

Now you won’t have to travel to Maitland or Newcastle to do a course. And we’re shire-wide. There’ll be things happening in the five villages, in Dungog Town itself, on farms and scenic spots, everywhere.

Accredited courses in First Aid and Food Handling are a must in an age of greater compliance standards and they will be available in February and March. As for safety on the land, Tocal College is putting on a special local Working With Chainsaws course, to help you get the most out of your ‘saw whether you’re an old hand or a newby (mooted for late March).

If the bush is your thing, we’re planning ‘ere summer’s done to hold a Frogging event on the Dungog Common. Coming up, Walking For Pleasure through some of the shire’s prettiest scenery, and a Journey To Pilchers Mountain.

On a more cultured note, there’s The Gresford Show Experience, where people can tour the exhibits, meet some talkative experts in their fields, and indulge in an unofficial cake-judging just like the real thing. It’ll

suit anyone who has visitors wanting to make their Show Day an extra special experience.

Photographers will be interested in The I Love My Gog Project, where a professional team will lead participants in a series of events culminating in a funky and very different portrait of the shire. Screen-printing is especially aimed at youth, while the Broadband For Seniors program is aimed at, well, seniors. Turn Op-Shop Finds Into Accessories is for everyone! And computer courses around Spreadsheets and Digital Photographs will turn even novices into power users.

If cooking’s your bag, we have an Indian Feast Night in April. Here you’ll learn how to cook up a storm (monsoon?), and wolf it down in the company of your fellow chefs. Also on the cards, local fine-food producers leading master-classes in cuisines from Italian to Sri Lankan, and later in the year a visiting expert in Regional Tastes Of Australia will explore new developments and enlighten our palates. And how about learning how to Build A Pizza Oven by helping build one yourself?

We’re developing a Business Toolbox Program – short and longer courses that should make a real difference to the local economy. First off, especially for retailers, with assistance from Dungog Shire Council and NSW Trade

& Investment, a master class in Visual Merchandising & Display. And if you’re confused by the new WHS rules – what used to be called OH&S – then we’re hunting out trainers to ensure that everyone is up to speed. Coming up later in the year: a Marketing & Event-Management Intensive that’s perfect for both businesses and community groups.

Also in the up-coming Community Groups Toolbox Program will be workshops in Increasing Membership, Treasurer ABCs, Writing Up Your News and Organising Volunteers.

In the second half of the year, in association with WEA Hunter, there’s a strong possibility of a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment - so we can have all the qualified trainers we need. The other big possibility is a Certificate in Aged Care, one of the fastest growing employment areas in the land.

We’re still bedding our first program down – so stay tuned for more information as it comes to hand. The website will be up and running by mid February with full course details. There’ll be a link on the Community Centre site at www.dins.org.au.

See you on that course!

Notes from the Gresford Community Group – December 2011Peter Doyle’s farewell A successful event, attracting 70+ people and a large number of apologies. The meal was very good. The Community Group presented Peter with a photograph of his property. and many people spoke of his achievements and community involvement. Peter added he thought it was a terrific day.

A cover charge would then be set. A maximum of 70 could be seated. Nomination forms to all GCG members. The meeting resolved that previous awardees would not be re-nominated if by the sponsoring group, but would be accepted if proposed by another group.

Community markets’ reportThe markets went well, stallholder numbers were down but otherwise all fine. The merits of a growers’ market was discussed with the suggestion a season-based market would be more successful.

Treasurer’s report Accepted

other reports The test web site expected to be ready early-January. It would be open for review until March, with the final site launched in April. The latest quotes for the skate park steelwork were accepted, and recommended the erection of stays for the shade go ahead.Letter from G. Souris on the status of representations concerning the community health centre was received. Road works The community group will again lobby local politicians in the New Year for funding to improve Gresford roads.

Adult education A survey is has been circulated to determine if needs for adult educational courses sourced locally and developed to meet local requirements.

GAPS carols BBQ Community Group will again provide a BBQ on 17 December before the GAPS Carols – gold coin donation required.

Post office boxes It was discussed that there still appears to be demand for more local post office boxes.

James theatre stakes Team members are being sought to participate in a charity event to support the James Theatre building in Dungog.

ART NeWSWelcome Culture Vulture readers to 2012! We can look forward to a full year of great local art exhibitions and events.

Culture Vulture will start the year off with an interview with artist Laura Jefferson, who has grown up in Allynbrook and presently lives at Hilldale in an amazing underground house. Since old enough to “finger paint” Laura has wanted to be an artist, always relishing her art classes at Gresford Primary School and Dungog High School, then attending the BA Visual Fine Arts Course at Newcastle University, where she later majored in sculpture and ceramics.

Laura finds sculpture gives her the freedom to explore and experiment with different materials and techniques from bronzing to welding scrap metals. Similarly with ceramics, she enjoys discovering the

wonderful glazing effects you can achieve. Laura says “I like experimenting with all sorts of glazes and textures with ceramics and sculptures. I don’t like to be restricted. I love the joy that art making gives to me.”

I asked Laura who are her favourite artists and what influences her? She has a great admiration for the Renaissance 15th Century masters, including the painter Caravaggio’s momentous works and the superb drawings by Leonardo Da Vinci. Her choices of Modern artists are the sculptures of American Roxy Paine, famous for his metal contorted trees and British sculptor Antony Gormley, who “has made sculpture that explores the

relation of the human body to space at large.” And her future plans? – “I will always love and enjoy art making. I hope to return to study, my Honours Degree in Fine Arts, maybe in Europe.”

Laura will be exhibiting an eclectic selection of ceramic works, including small modern figurative sculptures and a series of decorative platters, Back to Back Gallery 57 Bull St. Cooks Hill, Newcastle until 12 Feb. Well worth a visit. Then from 1 – 19 Feb at Watt Space Gallery, Cr. King & Auckland Sts. Newcastle Laura will present her 3rd Year Graduation exhibition – “Sustainability” (art not to harm the environment) an installation of ceramic figures and photographs. You can contact Laura about her work or forthcoming exhibitions at: [email protected]
